Hi all,
I am an Indiana boy living in Tokyo. I bought a C700 several months ago and it was my favorite pastime to load and unload it with new software.
Last week I finally got my hands on a C860. I am trying to set up the perfect system for myself. I have tried all of the ROMs at one time or another, but I haven\'t found the perfect setup yet for me. Here is my dream ROM:
English menus with Japanese input and font support
Support for Portabase (the best app on the Zaurus)
The 860 E/J Dictionary with data on the CF Card
Applications running at 3ghz with unlimited memory (ok that\'s pushing it)
So my questions are:
Is it possible to use Japanese and Portabase with X11, OZ, etc.?
Is it possible to load the 860 E/J dictionary on the CF Card?
Which folder are the E/J dictionary files stored on the 860?
Also, if anyone is interested in a C700 treated with TLC and is patient enough for shipping from Japan, I am ready to part with her.
I guess that is enough for now.
Thanks,
Brian

By the way, I am also a good source for Japanese pricing on Zaurus gadgets if you have any of those types of questions.....
-
Hi Im also living in Japanand about to buy a Zaurus, is the 860 that much better than the 700. intrested in chatting about your set up...new to this.
living in narita but in tokyo from time to time
-
Hi davidsan,
The big advantage of the 860(760) over the 700 is simply the memory capacity. The 700 also uses a slightly different processor (starting with the 750, a patch was made for a processor glitch), but the latest rom updates for the 700 are supposed to fix the processor problems. Using a swap file on a CF card or SD can help, but the newer machines are going to be faster. The real question to me is how many apps do you want to run fast and how much do you want to spend. In Japan, the 700 can be found for around $350 if you look hard enough. The 860 is running around $700. I love my zaurai, but the calendar and contacts are still not as good as the palm even on the 860, but with all the other possibilities you can use the Z for, I have put my palm in indefinite storage.
more to come...

Burao:
There was a post on the externe.net forum about installing the J/E dictionary files onto CF/SD:
http://externe.net/zaurus/forum/viewtopic....t=483&view=next (http://externe.net/zaurus/forum/viewtopic.php?t=483&view=next)
That post also has links to ipks containing the necessary files to add Japanese support/dictionary to roms that have removed Japanese support. It includes the c760/c860 dictionary (same on both models); it does not include the c860 translator (not hard to extract from the c860 filesystem, though).
I currently use tkcrom on my c760, with the above Japanese ipks installed and the locale set back to Japanese. I only tried the X11
and OZ roms briefly, so I can\'t help you there.

davidsan:
If you\'re going to invest the money in a Zaurus, I would definately
get the C760 over the C700. The C860 is a C760 with added software, and not really worth the extra cost, in my opinion.
Over the weekend I saw some used/recycled C760\'s for as low as
43000yen at Compmart (Eiden) in Nagoya. There are probably
similar deals in the Tokyo area. You could always check Akihabara.

ashikase,
I could be wrong, but I think this article is talking about a different E/J dictionary than what somes with the 860. I want to extract the 860 translator (maybe that is the \"dictionary\" I am looking for\", but I can\'t figure out what files I need to copy to restore the E/J. I backed up and then tried to format the user space. After doing so, the dictionary did not work. I assume because the dictionary files are stored in user space and deleted when the 860 is formatted.
I am interested in the tkcrom, but I wonder if the addition of european language sets (more use of ram), etc is worth it over the standard 860 ROM in addition to the loss (until I figure out a solution) of the 860 E/J dictionary.
My C700 was purchased at Sofmap in the used (refurbished, etc.) section. I don\'t know much about Nagoya, but in Tokyo I prefer Yurakucho for gadget shopping (Bic camera and Sofmap).
-
By the way, sorry about always forgetting to post as Burao instead of Guest. I am message board challenged.....
-
Also,
The cacko rom offers Japanese or English, but not both as far as I can tell. This doesn\'t help poor Americans like me who struggle with the joys of Japanese learning. I want to be able to ready Japanese while enjoying English menus at the same time.
-
Burao,
The dictionaries etc for the translator (2 large text areas - enter E in top, hit button and get J on bottom - or vice-versa) are located in /home/QtPalmtop/tranlator, there are 3 directories there ejjisho, ejtable and je. The files for the translator are available as ipks, you will find them on the CD that came with the C860. (I\'m only assuming this as I have a C760 running with the C860 NAND)
The dictionaries for sljisho (very small text entry area, 2 larger dispaly areas below) are located in /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/dic and symlinked to /home/QtPalmtop/dic.
I\'m running the standard sharp rom with my own conversion to give almost all English, but allowing Jaapnese input etc. I\'ve also added a bunch of fixes from the tkcRom and Cacko rom that I liked/wanted.
Portabase worls fine for me, although I\'ve been using sqlite more recently.
Other apps you may like - zten - along with Jim Breen\'s Edict dictionary, Opie Reader for ebooks, KanjiNirvana for those times you can\'t remember those kanji, Tree!Explorer - the best file manager i\'ve used on the Z, Kino2 for watching divx movies, KeyHelper for getting the keys to do what you want, Korganizer for a rapidly developing calendar and todo, iqnotes (I prefer version 1.0ja4 over the new 2.01 as it supports Japanese entry although 2.01 has a bunch of other nifty features) for notes etc.
If your interested in my conversion script, let me know and I\'ll post it here for you.

Were the conversion scripts posted? If so, where? It would be great to have them and the original sharp NAND!

-
Stu,
I would like to see your script.
Thanks for the advice. I have played with some of those apps before, but some are new to me.
I still prefer Portabase. I use it as my own E/J dictionary as well as information storage using the password protected tables.
I will check out some of the new apps now.
Thanks again,

Is there GPS software specific for the Japanese market. Other linux / zaurus GPS software works for telling you where you are on a map but not computing directions. I heard Sharp was coming out with a GPS service with directions specifically for the Japanese zaurus market.
-
Here is my conversion script, it was designed originally for C760, but has been tested on C750 and C860 also.
Basically it converst a stock Japanese rom to use English menus by removing the qtopia translation files in /home/QtPalmtop/i18n/ja/
Note if you install a program after runnig this script that comes up with Japanese menus - for example Zten and portabase - then just remove the <package>.qm files from this directory and the package will change to English menus
There are still a few places that have Japanese left, I'm still working on getting rid of these.
For the best results you will want to download and save to the same folder as the script the following files http://homepage.mac.com/tz1/libsl.qmid (http://homepage.mac.com/tz1/libsl.qmid) and http://homepage.mac.com/tz1/movieplayer.qmid (http://homepage.mac.com/tz1/movieplayer.qmid)
If you prefer to have Japnese style time and date (along with a few Japanese prompts) then there is a section in the script you will need to uncomment.
Hope you find this useful
I'll post updates once I'm happy they are working properly.

Stubear basically covered everything for converting a stock Japanese rom (nice script, btw). If you decide to install an English ROM (tkc, etc.), you can use the ipks from my previous link to restore Japanese functionality (while still maintaining English menus and such).
I personally prefer the C760/C860\'s builtin dictionary (sljisho) over zten+edict... edict is nice, but I find the built-in dictionary to be more useful (for example, many entries include example sentences). I still use zten with edict, though, as well as with other dictionaries, such as wordnet (english-english dictionary). Information on setting up zten, along with links to dictionary files, can be found at:
http://www.wbcd.org/zaurus/guide_teil7.html#2 (http://www.wbcd.org/zaurus/guide_teil7.html#2)
(be sure to check the German version of that page, as it includes more English dictionaries than the English page).
I wasn\'t too impressed by the C860\'s translator program... the results reminded me of Babelfish (useful, perhaps, but not altogether accurate or natural).
As for shopping... we recently got a Bic Camera in Nagoya. Nice store, but the few times that I went there I saw that some of their items were extremely overpriced (1GB microdrive: Bic Camera, 3man; Compmart, 2man).
And finally, since KanjiNirvana was mentioned, a plug: a couple of us, with the permission of the original author, are rewriting/improving KanjiNirvana. More information is available at:
http://nihongonirvana.sourceforge.net/ (http://nihongonirvana.sourceforge.net/)
Note that this is a fairly new project; we only started about two weeks ago. Feel free to join the mailing list. Feedback/suggestions/testers are always welcome.

Ashikase,
I like the E/J translator for doing full sentences. I agree that the results are much less than perfect, but it allows me to communicate with a Japanese person at least at a basic level.
I like Bic Camera because of the Bic card program. You get points back on every purchase (sometimes around 15%) for future purchases.
This is the reason they jack up the price a bit. So if you buy alot of gadgets in Japan (like me) it is the best. If you don\'t, other stores have better prices.
I will check out your nihongonirvana. Sounds good to me.
By the way, anyone know of a good way to get the Apache/PHP and MYSQL ipk files to work on the 860?
I had it all working on my 700 a while back, but I have been having trouble getting it on my 860.
I think it is mostly file permission problems, but I\'m not sure.
Thanks for all the help.
Burao
-
Ah yes, the point card programs. Seems like every store in Japan has those things. I really ought to take advantage of them.
Kind of off of the original topic, but, since we\'re talking about purchases, does anyone know what kind of charges are incurred for bringing stuff (electronics, computer items, etc) bought in Japan back to the States? Or shipping such items from Japan to the States? Any links to information would be appreciated.
I plan to stay in Japan for a while, but I\'m wondering how much customs is going to charge me when I go back... I\'ve picked up quite a few gadgets and such (
Thanks for any info.

I agree and I\'d be really interested in formating edict to be used by sljisho. Haven\'t been able find anything about the sljisho dic format - anyone??
I\'m also a big fan of Point Cards - have about 5 or 6 now (including one for a bakery!!)
Heading up to Tokyo next week - gonna try to get some new accessories for the Z.

davidsan, congrats on the new machine. I am enjoying my new 860 too.
Here is my setup:
KOrganizer for appointments and todo (really needs fastload to be useful, so I added in the .desktop file) Acts a bit quirky, but I think its the best.
tkcAddressBook for contacts. I had to pay for it, but I wanted xml data and better handling of english contacts. Also imports old contacts from QT
Portabase for just about everything. It love this program. It also has a winblows version so the data can be viewed on the PC.
I keep all kinds of data in Portabase format on my CF card (1GB) and plug it in to my laptop to edit data at home.
I have a couple questions:
1. I want to get Apache/Mysql/PHP, but there are a few different pachages flying around and I\'m not sure what the best (most current) one is.
2. What is the best terminal app to load on the 860 as it doesn\'t come with one. I liked qkonsole, but it shuts down when you hit the Cancel key. Very bad if you are using VI and trying to enter commands. If anyone has a link to a good terminal ipk I would appreciate it.
3. Anyone know much about the Java ME on the 860? Is it a complete replacement for Jeode? There is a script that transfers evm commands to CVM.
Thats it. Thanks,

Try embeddedkonsole-tw, it doesn\'t suffer from the Cancel key probelm, it also has support for Big5, euc, jis, sjis and UTF8 charsets. Doesn\'t have as many font selectinos as QKonsole but the charsets make up for it for me

It supports about 75-80% of the Jeode features - the evm script is a little flaky and I\'ve generally had better luck calling cvm directly. The biggest problem is that it doesn\'t have great Japanese support, there is a really cool app called babbletower (Japanese dictionary and flashcard app) that I can\'t use on Java ME cause it doesn\'t handle japanese fonts properly - it also has problems with selection indexes.

Hope I\'m not too off-topic here. I have a 5500 that\'s been having problems lately, so I\'m considering a C760 or 860 (hence my presence here). One of the 5500\'s problems is that Sagasu and Wajei stopped working, so I have to wonder: Will zten and kanjinirvana work on a 5500?
-
Retief:
In what way did Sagasu and Wajei stop working?
KanjiNirvana should work on a 5500 (and even the old 5000), though you may need to install the Unicode font. You can get the font from the old KanjiNirvana page at:
http://www.geocities.com/palmradic/zaurus/kani.html (http://www.geocities.com/palmradic/zaurus/kani.html)
You can get the latest version of KanjiNirvana at:
http://nihongonirvana.sourceforge.net/ (http://nihongonirvana.sourceforge.net/)
We are currently working on updating/improving KanjiNirvana, so if you have any problems/comments/requests, let us know.

In what way did Sagasu and Wajei stop working?
In Sagasu, with Lookup Method set to by kanji, I would select a kanji in the middle pane, and never get any entries to show up in the bottom pane. Likewise, with Lookup Method phonetic, and bottom menu set to hiragana, I would enter japanese, and never get any translations to appear. On the other hand, with the bottom menu set to romaji I could enter english, and the japanese translations would appear!
This used to work, and stopped about the same time my CF cards stopped working; that might not be coincidence. I\'ve reinstalled Sagasu and the edict with no luck. I\'ve installed WaJEi in its place with no luck.
-
Time to reformat and reinstall Windows... er, wait, wrong platform (^_^)
Seriously though, the quickest way to fix the problem may be to start with a clean ROM... it\'s possible that you may have some corrupt files/libraries (I have no idea). Of course, you may need an SD Card (since you said CF cards don\'t seem to work).
Sorry that I can\'t be of more help than that (-_-)
- ashikase
anpachi, gifu, japan
-
CF cards don\'t work, and I can\'t communicate through the cradle to upgrade the ROM that way, either. That seemed to leave me with choice of sending it in to Sharp, or living with the problems. But, hang on -- you\'re saying there\'s a way to flash the ROM using an SD card? I didn\'t know that...
As it happens, I\'m going to be in Honolulu in a couple weeks. It occurs to me that I might be able to find a store selling C860s there. Anyone know?
-
Bother. Yes, that last post was me.
-
Ah, right, I don\'t know if the 5500 models can be flashed via SD or not... I only have experience with the c7xx/c860 models. Sorry (T_T)
Btw, if you\'re thinking about buying a new Zaurus, I would highly recommend the C760 over the C860... unless you really want the translation software (which I feel doesn\'t work very well anyways). Otherwise the C760 is the same (albeit a different color), and it is less expensive.

It needs to run from the console as root. I can\'t remember the name of the file on the CD, but I think it was embeddedkonsole.???.ipk or some such, if you can\'t find it you can always use qkonsole (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1667) or any other console app available from www.killfiz.de/zaurus

Hi Stu,
thanks for your reply. At least now I am sure I have the terminal program on the C860. I am however uncertain as to the format of the executables. My problem now seem to be running the executables on the C860 and doing a proper reboot. Hence, as always, I\'ll be grateful if you can spend some time to answer the following questions:
1. What is the appropriate file format of the terminal executable? There
are various formats of these programs. Which is meant for the C860
machine architecture. Further, these programs are downloadable as
archives. I could not transfer the entire archive onto the Zaurus but its
contents. The \"qkonsole\" app comes in two flavours: a
qkonsole*_arm.ipk and a plattform independent one. Which specific
app in the respective folder do I have to install?
2. How do I reboot the C860 properly? Simply taking out the battery is
too tedious. Is there a hotkey combination?
3. There is apparently a jap/english conversion program on the conics
page called\"mcvonvert\" which should be installed on the CF card. I
have done that, taken out the battery and re-inserting (reboot) but still
nothing happens.
Thanks always for your help,
Ashu

1. You want the ipk - that is the default package for the zaurus - install it through the software icon on the settings page or find it on the doc tab and double tap it to open the software install proggie.
2. The second last icon on the start menu is the reboot (kinda green circle icon) click that then choose yes to reboot
3. Did you actually install the app or just put it on the CF card? you need to install the app through the install proggie or the command line - ipkg install <package>.ipk

Hi Stu,
I\'ve gone through the first stage of the conversion. Wonderful machine the SL-C860. Thanks a lot for your help. I wasn\'t getting the right pacakge across to the C860. Now that I\'ve gone through the first hurdle every thing fits in place. Some few questions:
1. It is mostly converted - approx. 90%+ - but ocassionally one gets the squares/rectangles on some menus. How can I get rid of this?
2. What is the best way to add blue-tooth functionality to the C860? Do I necessarily need to have a blue-tooth CF/SD card or will a
software update be okay?
3. How can I get wireless connectivity? I guess here I will certainly need a WLAN SD card because my CF slot is already in use.
Once again thanks for your great contribution in helping me have this device converted.
Cheers,
Ashu

I\'ve never come across boxes in menus, had red boxes in text input areas - that is cause it\'s trying to show kanji/kana with English fonts, hit the japanese button next to the space bar, the icon in the taskbar should change from a squiggly cirle (Japanese A) to English A
2&3. AFAIK the C860 cant use SD Wlan and bluetooth devices so you\"ll need CF based WLAN and Blutetooth, there is no onboard WLAN or bluetooth so you\'ll need a device - ie software upgrades wont help.

Stu,
I used the mcvonvert*.ipk script. Is that the one you wrote? As I said most things are in english except for the ocassional square boxes. I reckon though the original jap fonts have been disabled, some programs still use them in some places.
Oye, I made a mistake in purchasing a 1GB CF-card. I should have taken a 500MB SD card and reserve the CF slot for bluetooth and WLAN.
What are the consequences of swapping CF cards? Can I simply take out the CF card without loosing info? Maybe I should consider selling the CF card and get an SD one in order to free a slot.
Please, forward me your script if it is different fro mcconvert.
Thanks,
Ashu

I think than some of my script was used in the mconvert.ipk, but my script is the one you quoted at the top of this page, just cut and paste the text and save it to the Z, give it a good name and run it from konsole.
My script is designed to allow input and reading of Japanese, so the Japanese fonts are left behind - if you want an English only option the try the tkc Rom os Cacko Rom, they have pretty eye-candy and are only English - no red boxes around.

You can swap SD and CF cards without losing data, if you click on the icon of the CF card in the bottom right corner, it will pop up a box saying eject card.
If you get an error message saying cant remove card then you are running an app from the CF card - this will need to be closed first.
I swap SD/CF cards all the time - I have one 256Mb SD card filled with dictionary files that I need at work, on the train going home I swap it for the SD card with games on it

I don\'t think I\'ll need jap input, so I\'ll probably try other ROM versions.
Mybiggest worry now concerns the 1GB CF card I got. I am a bit reluctant to sell it because of it\'s size and speed. What is the issue involving SD WLAN cards and the Z. There are certainly some SD WLAN cards in the market. Do you think that in due course someone will come up with the appropriate driver software that will make it possible to use SD WLAN card on the Z?
Thanks always for sharing your Z experise with me.

Heads up - there are problems with the script as pasted above !!!
There are typos that will cause the sed commands to fail, and wipe out the files instead of commenting out the Name[ja] entries. (Looks like this is a side effect of how the script was copied/pasted.)
For anyone that wants to fix it by hand, the [ brackets in the sed commands need to be prefixed with \, e.g.
sed -e's/Name\[ja/#Name\[ja/' $filename > $filename$bakext
There's also copy of essentially the same script script here:
WBCD's Zaurus Users Guide (http://www.wbcd.org/zaurus/guide_teil7.html)
Remember, always back up your machine before trying any of this.
Thanks for the script and all the help, I almost have an english C860.

Hmm, Interesting, the script wwas correct on the old forum - must have lost the \ during the cross over.
The script on WBDC script is an same script that was copy/pasted into the forum here. I think I might have changed the default of deleting libsl.qm in the one here.
I'll edit the original script (the formatting looks all odd now - too much spacing) to correct the sed line in case anyone copies it from here
THanks

2. What is the best terminal app to load on the 860 as it doesn't come with one. I liked qkonsole, but it shuts down when you hit the Cancel key. Very bad if you are using VI and trying to enter commands. If anyone has a link to a good terminal ipk I would appreciate it.
Try embeddedkonsole-tw, it doesn't suffer from the Cancel key probelm, it also has support for Big5, euc, jis, sjis and UTF8 charsets. Doesn't have as many font selectinos as QKonsole but the charsets make up for it for me
3. Anyone know much about the Java ME on the 860? Is it a complete replacement for Jeode? There is a script that transfers evm commands to CVM.
It supports about 75-80% of the Jeode features - the evm script is a little flaky and I've generally had better luck calling cvm directly. The biggest problem is that it doesn't have great Japanese support, there is a really cool app called babbletower (Japanese dictionary and flashcard app) that I can't use on Java ME cause it doesn't handle japanese fonts properly - it also has problems with selection indexes.

Stubear,
I am struggling to install an app on my C860 that needs a java VM. I can see evm is installed, but somewhere the application tries to call cvm and fails.
How can I resolve this? How can I install a VM that calls the cvm commands directly? I thinkI do need something called jeode to get things up and runing, but where do I get it?
Thanks in anticipation,
Ashu

By the way, I am also a good source for Japanese pricing on Zaurus gadgets if you have any of those types of questions.....
Hi all,
I've got one question for Brian. Where is the cheapest shop to buy a Zaurus 860 in tokio?? or kyoto? I've got two friends staying in japan this week and I would like to buy one.
Thanks in advance.

I would suggest Sofmap in Yurakucho. They sell used Zs as well.
I usually use Bic Camera in Yurakucho because of their points program, but the prices are not the lowest. The other choice is just about anywhere in Akihabara, but I would recommend Sofmap used units over the stuff in Akihabara.

I heard Sharp was coming out with a GPS service with directions specifically for the Japanese zaurus market.
Does anyone have details of this? Thanks.

Possibly referring to this: http://www.spacetown.ne.jp/map/ (http://www.spacetown.ne.jp/map/) (Japanese)
I've used it. It's not bad, but in my case both my GPS card and my PHS card (which i used for downloading new maps) were both CF, which meant I had to constantly swap them. I don't know if Sharp's map software works with serial GPS units.
