Title: Files With Japanese Filenames Not Visible From Pc

Hi:

Does anyone know why I don't see files and folders that have Japanese names on the Z from PC, when connected by a cable?

Is it connected with the fact that my CF, where the files are, is formatted ext2? Before when it was FAT, I could see them, but don't know if it's something else...

Any help?

Thanks for this, didn't know this soft existed...

Anyhow, this is certainly a move in the right direction, but:

Upon further experimentation, I've found that Windows does see Japanese filenames only if you insert a FAT CF and select the Storage Mode Setting in PC Link on the Z.

If you select PC Link as the Mode Setting even on a FAT CF, the Japanese files become invisible.

If you select Storage and insert an ext2 CF, it's not readable by Windows.

After instaling the Ext2PC software from the link, the ext2 CF becomes readable. The Japanese files aren't invisible, but they show up as garbage and the directories, whose names are in Japanese can't be accessed.

This must be now some settings thing, but how to go about it? On the Z? Something about Ext2PC, something in Windows?

Found this in the fs-driver.org FAQ which is exactly the problem:

It is probably caused by an activated UTF-8 encoding in your Linux installation. You may check it by the locale tool (on Linux):
locale
When it outputs something, which ends with "utf8" in the line "LC_CTYPE=", UTF-8 encoding is enabled. Unfortunately, the current version of the Ext2 IFS software does not support UTF-8 encoded file names. (The driver always uses the current code page of Windows.)

But the Z doesn't have the locale command, can I set the locale somehow to eucJP or something, so that the Japanese in filenames will work?

Any other ideas?

Don't know if this helps but maybe worth checking Meanie's instructions on "Localizing/Converting to English" here:

This seems to involve the locale.conf file which may (or may not) fix your locale problem. There is also info on "Localizing to English but keeping Japanese". There are also a couple of programs (langswitch, and c3000-custom-jaen) that are written for the 3000 (don't know which zaurus you have). But be careful as he warns that the program " is not reversable".
