I'm trying out the evaluation version of TextMaker and when I'm editing moderatly large files (25KB) there is a delay before any keystroke updates the screen. The cursor moves immidiatly however so it looks like I'm inserting spaces and then after like a quarter to a half of a second the typed character appears.
Does anyone know if this is a shortcoming of TextMaker or could it perhaps have something to do other settings like KeyHelper that are conflicting? Would be nice to know before purchasing, 'cause it is by far the best word processor I've found for my Z.

I think that's just the way it is. I know that when I connect an external keyboard and type into Textmaker, there is lag of a second or two before what I typed appears (I type very quickly, so it's usually that whole words or phrases will appear in chunks, rather than a letter at a time). It's too bad, but it wasn't really made for the newer VGA models in the first place and they don't really support it anymore, so I guess it's not surprising that its performance isn't ideal (just look at the icon/menu sizes -- either tiny or huge).

Yup, I noticed the same thing -- especially with an external keyboard connected. It's a bit annoying. Also major delays when selecting a block of text and applying changes to it (especially using a USB mouse; have posted elsewhere in these forums regarding mouse issues with TextMaker).
Yes, it does seem like a nice piece of software (in terms of features) -- but for the price, it would be nice if performance were further optimized.
Was thinking of buying it but didn't expect their sale to end so soon -- it's back up to 49.95 euros (= about US$60!!!).
liberated -- did you buy it in the end??

I bought a copy sometime ago. I always got the impression that the program was half finished.
Take the screen icon problem. I asked in Softmaker's forum whether anything could be done to better scale the icons I was told that it would take too time consuming for them to do. I even offered to help do it for them but no joy.
Sorry if this seems like a glib answer but my advice is that if you want good office software then migrate to PdaXrom with XFCE. AbiWord works perfectly for me now with good response times and all the dialogues not going over the boundaries of the screen. :-) I would guess that OZ/GPE would also allow you to also run the same software.
Plus you can also run Gnumeric and have access to proper spreadsheet.

Same here, I bought TextMaker like 6 months ago but was never happy with it. It's not designed for the Z, I don't know what they were thinking about when they port it to the Z. It's way too slow (especially the open file GUI that drove me crazy) even in normal use without an external keyboard. I like the font though.
I switched to PdaXrom 2 months ago and use Abiword instead, it's way faster, the GUI is well done, the versions are kept up to date at each new Release Candidate of PdaXrom. I think if you want to use office app it's time to switch to an X based Rom such as PdaXrom or Oz/gpe. I see more and more people coming to PdaX these days because of the maturity the PdaX team has achieved now.
Give it a try, you won't be disappointed

Fascinating.... what's the difference with this:

I've thought about switching to PdaXrom but what matters most to me is stability. I couldn't find anywhere a clear list of what works and what doesn't in PdaX on the C1000. Any idea where I can find that?

You are lucky to have a C1000 because it's very well supported under PdaX. Everything works as it should, it IS very stable. The new Release Candidate just have been released yesterday(rc12). I am using rc11 at the moment. It's very user friendly.
For PIM: the full KDE-PIM suite (latest one 2.2.3, KO-pi,KA-pi,OM-pi, password manager)
For Office apps: Abiword, Gnumeric, Gnuplot, ...
I suggest you have a look at [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15167]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15167[/url] for a detailed description on how to swtich from SHARP to PdaX.
For me it just lacks a GUI for Mplayer like Kino2 but I have read that Mavlosky will may port Kino2 to PdaX(fingers crossed) and a easy way to back up my programs installed, settings, configuration.
