Version 0.4.3c is yet another small update, including:

 * Fixed broken Double Key functionality

Version 0.4.3b is out!

Version 0.4.3b is another small update, including:

 * Better handling of OGG Vorbis tags

Version 0.4.3a is a small update, including:

 * Better scaling of movies, especialy small ones (less than 320x240)
 * Always using direct rendering, so corresponding option is removed
 * Added Software scaling option - scale movies to the screen size, performance is poor though.
 * Updated smarp cropping algorithm

Issues resolved:

    * URLs are now properly saved and loaded with playlist
    * Fixed problem with suspend options not being properly restored
    * File was not selected with OK/Enter button on C1000
    * Refreshing Qtopia screen after mplayer video playpack is finished
    * Now kino2 is using much less CPU when playback position tracking is enabled

Misc changes:

    * Terminating mplayer process when too many errors are received during short time period
    * Made resample audio off by default
    * Prompting to restart Qtopia when remocom master is modified
    * Updated handling of blank LCD when switched off externaly
    * Minor updates to the Preferences dialog
    * Removed some absolete options

Hello Anton,

you make a good job. But I have a little problem with my C760.

The current MPlayer is also for the Zaurus C7x0/860 the file mplayer-bvdd_1.1.5-1_arm.ipk.- Or did I understand that wrongly?
In the control file from kino2_0.4.3_arm.ipk no dependence is contained.
Where is the problem?

Workaround:
In order to be able to install the current version, I installed mplayer-w100 again,
then I installed Kino2, then I removed mplayer-w100 and installed mplayer-bvdd.

And the current version of Kino2 runs.

Great! Thanks, Maslovsky, for making that available!

However, still the same problem as above:
Many of my video files are not played full-screen, but probably in their original resolution (although I have the "scale to screen" feature activated).

The info windows shows for one of these videos:

Video:
Size: 384x288
Codec: 0x10000001
Bitrate: 1151200
FPS: 25

Audio:
Codec: mad
Rate: 44100
Bitrate: 224000
Channels: 2


Well, this was with some attempts before.
When I now try again to play some of such files, the screen fades white and some horizontal stripes ( lines appear and nothing happens... I have to press "Cancel" twice to exit Kino2 and return to the QTopia GUI.
What happens there?
Edit: When I reboot, the video plays again, but only once. After that, I have again that white-fading screen with lines or pixels getting black slowly. Could something break the loaded bvdd driver or something?
Any recommended mplayer options to make it work properly?

Works great when it's in landscape mode, all the screens show up fine, however, when it's in portrait mode, the configuration screens are cut off on the right side.

Had hoped to have the playlist reloaded when starting up, but noticed there's no option available to have that done?

Yes, I noticed that, but that would require to rework all preferences dialogs...

hmmm - on my Linux desktop it can!
Or maybe it does not actively scale them but zooms them - I don't know.
What I am quite sure about is that mplayer does not switch the X-server resolution on my desktop.
(If I hit the "f" key for fullscreen, I think using -vo sdl or -vo xv on my desktop, this particular video _is_ shown in fullscreen).

So why doesn't it do it on the zaurus?

Performance of Zaurus is incmparable to your linux desktop. You can do a software scaling (add  -scale 640:480 option to the mplayer) and see the difference.

-fs and -wm options enable hardware scaling in mplayer, which can only handle videos of "proper" sizes, such as 320:240.

You can also try to enable "Smart crop" iption, it may help.

I tried the latest kino2 and I think I've found one important bug about displaying the tag info of music files:

When I used kino2 to play some OGG and FLAC files, which are correctly tagged with artist, album, track, genre, year, etc informations (UTF-8 encoding of course), kino2 cannot display these information at all by showing blank at all these fileds. However these information of all MP3 songs with UTF-8 tags can be shown correctly, even for the Asian songs that I have, as long as correct font is selected.

So I think probably the display of the tag information of OGG and FLAC were left out, right? Can this bug be fixed soon?

Also I found out another minor bug: everytime when I tried to open a song, if I clicked the UP icon located at the right-most place of the open-file dialog, the directory will jump to the top Document directory. Then I had to clicked several times to go back to the place where I were before.

what's the best version of kino/mplayer for the 760/860, as these have the ATI W100 Imageon chip... i..e should I install the mplayer bvdd version or not?

Thanks for the explanation, and especially thanks for the tip with smartcrop. It did the trick! Now I can view those videos full-screen without transcoding!

However, exiting mplayer caused kino and then even the QTopia GUI to not display some elements (missing buttons and icons). Even after exiting kino, the QTopia GUI is damaged. The remaining icons (taskbar icons) work. But the system tray and start menu etc. are gone.

Restarting kino shows kino correctly. QTopia still damaged.

Tapping where the start menu icon should be brings up the start menu, so function of the GUI is still intact, only display is damaged.
Clicking away the start menu again shows half of the start menu icon (where the menu overlapped the icon), so according to my GUI knowledge <g> it seems to be a missing screen refresh or something like that.
Yes: "Rotation" from the start menu rotates the GUI and all items are shown again.

Just FYI, nothing critical as it seems, but maybe it is a problem of kino.

Still can't play AAC files made for the Nokia phone. zLAMIP can do it, but not mplayer.

I know it is an mplayer problem, not Kino2. Kino2 is cool, that is why I wish mplayer could handle these files.

If anyone wants a sample to muck with I can post one.

i noticed that C3000 display bug too! and i noticed that double rotation does solve the problem  ouf!  perhaps a bvdd issue ?

Well, not entirely, as I see now.
The video (original size about 384x288 pixels or similar almost-qvga-sizes) is played full-screen now, more precisely full-width, i.e. the 384 pixels streched to about 640, maybe left and right is cropped off a bit. But on the top and bottom smart-crop crops off quite some content, although it isn't necessary, because the video would fit nicely onto the screen. This results in thick black bars above and below the video where actually there should be heads and feet of the actors.

So a question to all the mplayer experts out there:

Mplayer IS able to stretch the video to full width (using smart crop, no matter how it works technically), but how can I avoid it to crop off so much from the top and bottom?

BTW: The built in video player also is able to stretch the video (just as mplayer, also without any noticable impact on performance), but it has some problems with the codecs mplayer is able to play very well. And I like the kino GUI much more than the video player GUI. So I'd like to use mplayer.

How stable/mature/well-integrated is zLAMIP? I run cacko, so was wondering if zLAMIP would stream audio better than mplayer?

the previous version of kino2 with an older version of mplayer-bvdd workt perfectly on my C3k, but i upgraded just now to a newer mplayer and newest kino2 and the movies don't want to play fullscreen

which flags should i give to mplayer? i used to have -vm -fs and scale to screen on in kino2, but now it seems they are ignored.

unfortunately i forgot which version of mplayer i was using before, but could anyone tell me if they are able to play movies fullscreen with the mplayer-bvdd 1.1.5-1 (both with and without iwmmxt), kino2 0.4.3 and bvdd 0.4.0 on a C3k running sharp rom and tetsu's special K, and if so, how?

ps i was unable to fully downgrade to the older version of kino2, the about box says it's 0.4.2, but functionality like autosaving and loading of playlists still persisted.

If tags are not displayed this means that mplayer wasn't able to psras eand display them. To test run mplayer with -identify -verbowse options and see if tags are displayed. If they are displayed, post your file somewhere and send me a link. If tags are not displayed - sorry, I can't help you...

Try this:

1. Disable scale option in kino2
2. Add -scale 640:480 option to the mplayer parameters (General tab in kino2 Preferences)

There is no such optino for mplayer - when Smart Crop is selected, kino2 is cropping video to the nesrest "correct" size, such as 320x240, etc.

make a file there, name: mplayer

Anyone know a good setting for the cache and bandwidth settings under "Media Stream" in preferences?  Internet streams play very choppy on my Zaurus.

Try 32 Kbytes. Also depends on audio stream format - MP3 or OGG are played better than WMA...

I set, in opera, mime type audio/x-scpls, extension pls to run kino2. when I try to play a stream from shoutcast kino2 opens and saya "opening file", or something very like, but after a little while the message disappears and there is nothing to play. Any suggestions for playing shoutcast using opera and kino2?

See the "OggVorbisComment" outputs, all tag information are there. So I think kino2 should be able to extract these information and display them. However mplayer cannot extract tag information from FLAC file.

Hello,
we tried to install kino2 0.4.3.a as described on the webpage,
with all the prerequisites. We have a C1000 with Sharp-ROM!

As stated for "ROMs other than Cacko" we installed the mplayer and the sudo package. Then tried to install qtopia-commbbatteryapplet_1.0.6_arm.ipk,
but this crashes the C1000 completely    : during install the machine crashed,
reboots and crashes again and again every 10 seconds after POST.
So a complete (!) restore was necessary from backup.

A closer look at the postinst file of the package shows
  cd /home/QtPalmtop/plugins/applets
  rm -f libbatteryapplet.so
but no additional links to .so.1 , 1.0, 1.0.0 are created to the new lib.
Could this be the problem, or what are we doing wrong?

So without this lib, Kino2 seems not to play any video  (mp3 work btw).

Also the postrm seems not completely suitable for the C1000,
as there is no such tar.gz file on its ROM:
  tar -xzvf /root/.home_default.tar.gz home/zaurus/Settings/freqchange.conf
only .home_default.tar, but without the file freqchange.conf contained.
(I didn reach this point anyhow, as I had to restore completely...)

Can anybody help?

Sorry, Sharp ROM may not be well supported. Since Cacko ROM will be released soon, I didn't spend much time testing kino2 on Sharp ROM.

Looks good so far.  I am a bit confused, though: how does one disable the feed?  I was able to install from the command line using the --force-dependencies option.

One quick observation: when starting up, the program will audibly play a song, even if the mute is enabled.  Remuting will fix the problem.

Many thanks to Maslovsky for a really nice piece of software! I have an SL-6000L, and with the 640x480 resolution, the interface looks fine but movies display at 1/4 of the screen size. If I set the interface to display at zoomed size, then the interface does not all fit on the screen, but the movies are displayed perfectly. Is there any way to display the gui fullscreen *AND* the movies be fullscreen?
   This is purely a cosmetic issue, but if there is a way to see the gui fullscreen and movies fullscreen, that would make this software totally perfect. In any case, thanks for a trully great piece of software!!

i got it to work on my C3000.

1) removed the cacko feed from package installer

2) removed old kino 4.2

3) installed new kino 4.3b

4) removed mplayer-bvdd-iwmmxt_1.1.5-1 - the mplayer binary just disappeared before this

5) reinstalled mplayer-bvdd-iwmmxt_1.1.5-1

6) in the kino preferences for mplayer switches.. put in
    -vm -fs -vo bvdd

and everything plays nicely and in full screen mode.

Never mind - Stubear was kind enough to provide me the solution in another forum. For the benefit of anyone else who comes across this, the answer is to hold "D" and "B" while pressing the "Reset" pin with the stylus.  This will boot to the console, where you can log in as root and fix whatever needs fixing.

I'm using cacko 1.23's kino 4.3c on a 3100

I have flac files in a playlist, but when I playback it only plays one file and not the whole list.  I can play each file individually.  Is there a trick to playing everything in the playlist?

Try to play flac file directly with mplayer form console.  Just pass file names separated by space.

Yes the flac files played through using the mplayer commandline even though kino2 does not.  I noticed that I had to add *.flac into the supported extensions to even get kino2 to recognize the file.

Yes, as I remember theyare not in default extentions list. So are they played properly after you added extention? Or still have problems?

Anybody know how to 1) center the movie and 2) fill the rest of the screen with black in mplayer.

I checked the mplayer manual, but didn't get much info. For the 1st task, the available options are:

-geometry 50%:50%
NOTE: This option is only supported by the x11, xm- ga, xv, xvmc, xvidix, gl, gl2, directx and tdfxfb video output drivers.   

-zrxdoff <x display offset> (-vo zr only)
   If the movie is smaller than the TV screen, this option specifies the x offset from the upper-left corner of the TV screen (default: centered).
-zrydoff <y display offset> (-vo zr only)
   If the movie is smaller than the TV screen, this option specifies the y offset from the upper-left corner of the TV screen (default: centered).

However, I can't get either of them to work on 6k. Somebody more experienced with mplayer, please educate me.

There is a problem in mplayer video driver for CxK models - it fails to play second video file form the same playlist. It needs to be restarted, so that vidoe driver gets reinitialized.

Sorry, I was never able to get kino2 working on my 5600.  It is just very unstable on that.  So I don't think it is possible.

neither can I play any video with 0.4.3c on my 5600!!

It works fine when I am with 0.4.2 but not now.

Playing mp3 and ogg is fine.

Is there any specific setting to selecting under Preferences > Video?

Kino2 has not been working on my SL-5600 since version 0.4..2.

However, I can play video file quite comfortable with the Mplayer bundled.

However, with version 0.4.3, Mplayer (1.1.5 build) cause distorted video image at the beginning portion of the screen image when the following command line options is in use:

Mplayer -quiet - cache 256 abc.avi.

I have managed to play mpg file using the following command line with mplayer bundled with Kino 4.0.3 on my SL-5600:

mplayer -nortc -noaspect - framedrop -quiet -cache 1024 -nosound 123.mpg

However, no audio with the video.  

Can someone enlighten how to get audio working with mplayer?

perhaps English is not your first language, 'cos the "-nosound" option might be a bit of a clue!!!

I think when you booted up you brain this morning you must have used the "-intelligence low" option

Thanks for the pointer.  I have been playing with -ao and -nosound option alternatively the whole afternoon.  Using -ao option resulted frequent crashes during the fine-tuning.  It was very frustrating until the correct option was working.

Having solved the video playing problem with mplayer, I felt that my brain  is now "intelligent high" than "you brain" now.

I can't get kino2 on the sharp rom to auto save my playlist.  It did it on cacko.  Is it a permission issue?  The options to do it are turned on in preferences.

Can someone post an example of their saved mplayer playlist from kino2?  If I remember correctly the playlist is saved somewhere under .mplayer/playlist or something under the home directory.

This may not help, but in cacko, when using kino2, there is an option to save your playlist under the "File" menu.
It gives you a choice where to save your playlist, by opening a file save dialog, with Internal disk, SD card, and CF card.
(That is if you have both cards inserted).
This is on my C3100.
I just save mine in the same directory where my movie files are.
/hdd3/Documents/Movie_Files
I only have 3 movies in there at the moment.
I don't use kino2 that often, but I also have these checkmarked in prefrences->playlist
x Save current playlist
x Save current position in playlist
x Add file to playlist on tap when opening

Yeah, those options worked for me as well in cacko.  But they do not work on the sharp rom.  I am able to save a playlist to a file.  But there is no point, I still have to load it manually each time I open up kino2.  I just wish it would show the exact list I had in it when I last closed it.
