Title: Thunar, File Management Reloaded
Post by: Chero on September 08, 2005, 02:03:35 am
Here are some screenshots of version 0.1.2 running on my Z :

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [attach=893:attachment

It's really fast and easy to use.
As it is only version 0.1.2 (sept.02 2005), I presume the best is yet to come !!

I'll upload in this thread as soon as I get it packaged.
(I'll upload libexo and thunar, it needs xfce4_4.2.2 with the hicolor-icon-theme)

on desktop :
If it's debian, try these deb-packages [a href=\"http://www.os-works.com/debian/pool/main/t/thunar/]over here, don't forget to download libexo (it's in "..../e/exo") on the same site.

On Z : I'll try to package this evening (and it's only 9:52 am over here)

I compiled it with softfloat.

If you mean the "debian packages" I talked about : they are for your desktop (i386).

For those who want to play, here are the ipkgs, BUT,

I've been messing with snapshots and now I have troubles copying files. Browsing the sytem works fine, it's easy to add "cf" and "card" to the side pane, renaming works, ...
I didn't have a lot of time to play with it.

Even if it doesn't do all the things I thought it would, it's nice to see (and feel) what it will become.

Chero.

THIS ALL COMES AS IS AND WITH NO WARRANTY AT ALL. I DON'T TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. IF YOUR ZAURUS EXPLODES, THEN I'M SORRY. IF IT MELTS, THEN I'M EVEN MORE SORRY. TAKE NOTE THAT THIS IS A TESTING RELEASE IN AN EARLY STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT. ANYWAY, HAVE FUN.

You need xfce4_4.2.2_armv5tel.ipk installed, you can find it over here (http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/cacko/pdaXrom/1.1.0/rc10/chero/old/)

The hicolor theme : most of the icons are probably on your system (if you installed xfce4), but they don't have an index-file. You could try to copy the one from the Rodent theme to the hicolor theme (/usr/local/share/icons). Anyway, I'll pkg the hicolor theme later today.
(edit : I created an ipk of the hicolor theme, but can't upload it for the moment - I forgot my usb cable at home. I'll try to bring it this afternoon)

Chero, I use ROX because I like my file explorer managing my desktop too, to enable drag&drop and other usual stuff.

If Thunar is as fast as ROX, I'll use it instead. But can thunar manage desktop, like nautilus does in my debian box?
Do we need a desktop/pinboard plugin for xfce4?

It's xfce4 window manager.
You can also do it using other window manager (fvwm, icewm, ...)

[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14031]Take a look at the screenshots in the first post of this thread, the two things you marked are in one bar over here.

Search the forum for xfce4, there's already written quite a lot about this.

I don't know where they will go with thunar. And I don't think the developers know.
They just want it to be fast and easy to use, so it can be used on "slow" machines. I like that point of view.
But it can't do any of those things yet. Maybe we'll have to wait for 1.0.0 ? It should be ready by the end of 2005. We'll see.
One thing's for sure, I like what they did so far.

No final release yet, but I built the 0.1.4 pre-release.
It's light, nice, and fast.

Copying, cutting, pasting, deleting, renaming, launching files with the correct program seems to work fine.

BTW : I'll package it asap.

Files are here (http://users.telenet.be/zaurususer/ipkgs/).

thunar requires exo and libpng2, both are in the same place.

Donations can be done directly to the pdaX-team.

Hello,

Finally figured out how to fix the 0.1.4 pre-alpha code, then you get this (alpha release). (http://thunar.xfce.org/news.xhtml#2006-01-22)

I had to do the same fixes, and upgraded the ipkgs to their new versions (code released 01/22/2006).
I didn't bother to clean them (all has been stripped, but docs and includes are in the ipkgs). When there is sufficient intrest, I'll split the "dev" from the runtimes.

BTW : anyone succeed to make it run ?

Have fun,
Chero.

Just a few extra screenshots.
The icon view with the photos takes about 10 secs to load. Fast, isn't it ?

I had this same error, I think it is gconf_2.10.0-1_armv5tel.ipk. I was installing gnumeric when I got this error, once gnumeric was finished installing (and all of it's related gnomish dependencies) thunar worked fine.

Good luck,

Jerry

thunar: relocation error: /usr/local/lib/libthunar-vfs-1.so.0: undefined symbol: exo_intern_static_string.

What does this mean, and what should be done about it?

Did you install the correct exo lib ?
You need exo 0.3.1.2

I'll try to figure out what the deps are. My Z contains a lot of installed apps, so it doesn't complain a lot. When compiling thunar, I only needed libpng2 and exo.
The rest was already there. Is there a command to check what it all depend on ? Or do I have to check in the code ?

I'm sure about xfce4, libpng2 and exo.
I think it also needs gconf, gnome-icon-theme and some other gnomelibs.

BTW : have you noticed the "configure custom action" menu? It's really nice. I created entries over there to tar, untar ("here" and "in compile-dir"), bunzip2, view pictures with feh, .... It's simple but powerfull !
Support to browse tar-archives and other is coming up.

Be aware that thunar stores thumbnails in /home/root/.thumbnails. To make sure my / doesn't get stuffed, I symlinked this one to Hd.

Glad to see there is some interest in it.

Have fun,
Chero.

It seems to be one of the libs that doesn't like to be installed to SD or Hd. I installed thunar to /, never had troubles.

Hello all,

I've been playing with xfce4-4.4.0 (svn). What is to come : http://www.xfce.org (http://www.xfce.org)

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Thunar is also coming along nice : more info : http://xfce-diary.blogspot.com/ (http://xfce-diary.blogspot.com/) (see last post)

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

For those who want to play : http://users.telenet.be/zaurususer/ipkgs/experimental/ (http://users.telenet.be/zaurususer/ipkgs/experimental/) , but don't blame me if it breaks something (it reads "experimental"). The packages don't hold deps and do hold devs. I'll clean them when finished.

BTW : "orage" is a very simple calendar-app for xfce, with alarms !! See http://foo-projects.org/~korbinus/orage/ (http://foo-projects.org/~korbinus/orage/) for more info.

Have fun,
Chero.

Great work, Chero!

I've been meaning to try xfce, and I'm happy to play.  I installed all the experimental packages (and they all appeared to install just fine.)

Um, I really hate to ask a stupid question ... but, how do I start into xfce?  "startxfce4" doesn't exist, and "startx" isn't launching it.  (I tried launching a few /usr/bin/xf* applications from within a terminal in openbox, but this obviously isn't the proper way to do it and didn't give me the results I was hoping for.)

Thanks,
Armagon

Start with installing the old "xfce4", from this ipk you can use the start-script.

On my C3100 I had to :
- rm /usr/local/bin/xfce4-panel
- rm /usr/local/bin/xfdesktop
- xrandr -o 3

I still have to add xfwm4 and xfce4-session.
Thunar and orage should work in openbox/matchbox.
