Title: News About My C3000
Post by: Meanie on September 11, 2005, 06:29:43 am
My C3000 just died

I plugged in a USB mini B cable to transfer files to my laptop and boom, it turned off and I could smell something burnt. The usb port smells awfully burnt and the Z is completely dead. No lights, nothing.

sigh

Baaaad news, indeed!

I guess it wasn't the first time you'd connect it to your laptop... Any idea about what happened? Is your laptop OK? Was your cable somehow damaged (short circuit?) before or after the incident?

It raises another subject: how to get it fixed... where/how did you purchase it? Directly in Japan or via a local importer?

Anyway, I wish you good luck, this kind of situation isn't funny at all, and is usually costly as well.

Comfort Meanie. Hope it would be fixed soon.

that sucks major donkey dick! Especially because I've used your site to pretty much get to gribs with the Zaurus! Hope you manage to get it working again , if not stick a paypal dontations link up on your site I'm sure people would contribute to your site seeing as its loaded with useful info on Zaurus stuff...might be able to get some money for a new one . Either that or get Sharp to send you a freebie for supporting their device so well!

Free Zaurus for Meanie anyone ?

Sorry to hear the bad news.  But it sounds like there had to be some kind of defect either on the Zaurus or the laptop's USB port.   If it was a bad/failed circuit on the Zaurus that was the issue, you should be able to get it repaired/replaced.  Anyway, I wish you the best of luck.  Keep us updated.

Unfortuantely I'm broke right now, but I may be able to scrape together $5 for the fund.

meanie - any idea yet if you'll be able to send it in for warranty repair/replacement?  who did you buy your 3000 from?  I had a screen problem with my 760 once and I just sent it to dynamism (where I bought it) and they took care of fixing it.

If you end up having to replace your Z yourself, I'd be happy to help donate as well.

Keep us posted!

I did the same thing to my first 3100 from Dynamism... Turns out that there are some badly made USB mini-A cables, that connect power to the data pins ... and having 5V at 500mA is BAD for the Z.  So, anyway, dynamism did the "send to japan" repair, and it came back after two weeks good as new.

It's a known problem, especially if you bought an iRiver cable to do mini-A host, and a scary one since it blows both the laptop AND the Z's USB port, if not the entire motherboard.

Go fig.

Well, that is scary. I use an iRiver cable on my 6k all the time but now I'm pretty nervous about it!
Is this known problem documented here someplace? Or anywhere? Should the iRiver cables be tossed?

Cute LIbretto too meanie ... we seem to have a few things in common gadgetwise.

Oh, that's too bad!  Sorry to hear this...

Hope your 3000 still has warranty (your signature says it's just half an year old).  If not, maybe the importers can offer some help to get it fixed.

Anyways there will be a solution and things will be fine.

count me in too, if it wasnt for his site, I'd be pulling my hair out...still

if they wont repair it or he doesnt feel the need to repair but replace it, you got a buyer already

edit: unrecoverable hdd1 error, i fsck it and alls ok then during boot hdd1 error, tried factory and nand restores, no-go, i think it was a bad idea to have 2 restore partitions on the disk....damn back to the factory it goes, damn!

Eek!  That's awful!  Should the USB cable issue be a sticky in the forums, as this is a horrible death for a machine to suffer?

Hope you get it sorted.  Truly sad to see something like this happen, especially to someone who is so much help to the community.

Thanks everyone for your moral support. I really felt bad about it all. It happened so quickly and unexpectantly that I could hardly believe that my Z was dead. However, I am going to send the Z back to Japan and my friend over there who originally bought it for me will try to get it serviced on warranty. Hopefully she will be able to get it repaired/replaced for me. If things don't work out, I might get a C3100 as a replacement.

Anyway, let this be a warning. Be careful what cables you stick into the usb port. Most cables are fine but if you are unlucky, it can fry your Z.

Again, thanks for your heart felt support. For all those who offered to give donations, I sincerely thank you for the nice gesture, but I will be fine. If you want to help, I would appreciate it if you would make donations to the Cacko project instead.

Well, I got bored already without the Z, so I ordered myself an OQO  Yay, WindowsXP in my palms!

I wonder if the 6000 usb setup is different from the the clamshell's.  I've never heard of a 6000 blowing up due to the iriver USB adapter.  It is a good thing that most of the importers supply the cable.

Meanie,

Sorry to hear this... But could you please clarify which cable you were using and how?
I just want to sort out all speculations about all the different cables which could arise because of lack of specific info...

I did this once when I had the USB port open and the Z was in my pocket and a dime was also in there and it lodged in the usb connector and there was some "heat" in my pocket and I pulled it out and it smelled a bit like an electrical fire.  Anyway, I let it sit and recharged the battery and it worked again.  If you had a bent pin on the cable you may have shorted the connection to the battery power???  Just a guess, but that certainly does sucketh the major one.

If you were to put up a donation link on your page I'd kick in a few as I along with so many others have benefited from your site. And as the bible says 'A worker deserves his wages...'

As per your advice, I apply this principle to our dear friend maslovsky as well and shall make use of his Paypal link as soon as the new Cacko rom is out

To those who are now living in fear of their USB cables, I'll repost this link:

 https://serialio.com//store/product_info.ph...82de18220188139 (https://serialio.com//store/product_info.php?cPath=54_61&products_id=141&osCsid=1cdd2e5630eed06c182de18220188139)

Serialio has been offering Zaurus accessories for years and seem to know their stuff.  I purchased one of these and haven't had any problems at all.  For $5.99 + shipping you can easily replace your iRiver OTG cable if it is simply too frightening to use again.

Doesn't it look the same as the one TRIsoft and StreamlineCPUs are supplying?

In my case, the problem was not caused by the USB host cable aka mini USB-A. I have been using the GoldX 5-in-1, Avico and iRiver cables without problems. The problem that killed my Z was the USB mini-B cable aka USB sync cable that you use to transfer files between PC/Laptop withZaurus, ie the cable you would use with IntelliSync. I don't use it much since I use my wifi and samba to transfer files most the time, but this time I wanted to copy files to my 4GB CF card which would not work with a CF wifi inserted so I tried the USB sync cable. I must have grabbed a dodgy one though. I have so many USB mini B cables lying around since most devices you buy these days come with one, ie camera, disk, hub, cdrom, mobile - all the miniature devices these days provide a USB mini B cable for synching. Unlucky for me, I grabbed a dodgy one. I will label each cable from now on, ie I will label the one provided by Sharp with a Zaurus tag and only use that cable to sync the Z if ever.

how about putting up a paypal account so we can send you stuff?  you definetly put some effort behind your small projects and i definetly used used some of it.

anyway, we can shave 10-750 dollars off your next purchase since you deserve it for the c3000 list and you can redoo a c31000 list as well.

also, sell your pda to someone in the forums for cash towards the new pda.  if you get too much donations, give the pda to offroadgeek so he can donate it to someone deserving such as maslovsky or someone else who needs it for development.  and to think of it, you would have a 9gb pda.  1gb sd, 4gb cf, and internal 4gb cf

Thanks for clarification. Hope you'll get it fixed under the warranty. If you will be replacing a main board, I'll be interested in the fried one. I need to trace uart lines for internal bluetooth project, and the only sure way to do so seems to be to get a dead board and unsolder its cpu.

Just a short update. My new C3100 should be arriving today. Not sure where abouts the C3000 is at the moment since Japan is having a holiday and most places are closed. The OQO is a bitch to get. Seems like its out of stock.

My friend in Tokyo just told me that Sharp support in Japan has contacted her about my C3000. They finally have decided that it could not be fixed and will be replaced instead. So I will be getting a brand spanking new C3000 back soon. All my data is lost though  Sharp support insists that backing up the harddisk is the customer's responsibility. Man, backing up my Zaurus is what killed it in the first place. Damn USB sync cable fried the unit. Anyway, I should be getting it in about 3 weeks time or so...

But great they did it on warranty.

Yeah, that's why I didn't open it up. Had a choice of saving my data and voiding the warranty, or lose my data and get it repaired/replaced on warranty. Well, you know which option I picked, but it took them over a month to decide that they should give me a new one  Luckily I bought a C3100 or else I would had gone crazy waiting for it to return. Now if only my local customs people didn't screw up their computer system and created queues of several weeks for imported goods to clear customs...

Ok, back on topic for this thread. I just had news from my friend and she told me that Sharp has sent her a new replacement C3000. She will be sending it back to me ASAP. I just wish Australian customs won't be holding it up for too long. There have been queues for imported goods waiting several weeks until customs could clear them.
