Hi ppl! I just got my Zaurus 5500 2 days ago and I love it!! It currently has the Embedix OS with ROM 3.10 from Sharp. I like this but some packages I download don't seem to work 100% with it (like Gaim). I've seen the OpenZaurus and Opie and other ROMs / OS's and I'm not sure which is better / recommended. Can someone point to a comparison of the different ROM's and OS's and the pro's / con's of each? I am good at linux in general and can get down and dirty with config files - i'm not afraid to do that so advanced stuff is fine as well. Thanks in advance!

a simple search should get you plenty of hits, but here is the summary
sharpn rom is relatively decent, but old
cacko rom is a patched up sharp rom...much improved
tkc rom is also a patched up rom, but it hasn't been work since soon after 3.10's release.
OZ has lots of eye candy and lots of features. Though generally thought of as less stable, the 5500 version should reasonably good. Probably good for getting your hands dirty
pdaxrom is generally not for the 320x240 zaurii. I'm not sure if they ported it over.
Each one is loved for different reasons.

Thanks for the info. How about the different environments like Qtopia vs. Opie vs. OpenZaurus?

You also have Hentges, which is a patched up OpenZaurus. It installs a good variety of apps, and makes several problem apps work out of the box.

OpenZaurus is a distro (you know, like debian and fedora core are) not an environment

OpenZaurus is a distro - there are two main GUIs available for it (in the same way that Mandrake is a distro and it has Gnome & KDE as GUIs) - these are Opie (which is a fork of Qtopia) and GPE (which is X11 based).
Personally I think Opie is better than Qtopia, and I use GPE as I want to use X11 based apps.

Are you using the GUI package manager? If so, I'm afraid there's a bug with it and you;re better off using the command line.
No need to shout either

There are more than just two GUI's. There is also Qtopia 2.1.

ljp: Qtopia 2.1 is not available in current OpenZaurus releases.
