Title: Need A Sd Card/ethernet/keyboard For Z
Post by: erikqwerty on September 16, 2005, 09:05:05 pm
Hi! I am planning on using my Z on a 20 day trip to australia next summer. I have a cacko c860. It needs some accesories to work good for this.

1. Australia Charger: I would like a world charger, as I just have the 100v japanese charger. Work in both Australia/USA. (With plug adapters of cource!)

2. Ext2/3 SD card. I want debian/xqt. Xqt works for me, but I can't do anything with it but have multiple terminals all open at once. I need a 512 MB+ sd card that can be reliable and somewhat inexpensive? My 256 Sandisc cant even write to the superblock.

3. Keyboard. I need a small foldable nice laptop like keyboard. I have no idea what works. It would be awsome to be wired to the sharp port so it could be used on a plane in turbulence! LONG flights from US-Australia. I do NOT have bluetooth.

4. Internet: I have a ambicom 802.11b Wifi card. How many hotspots in australia? I was thinking of getting a ethernet dongle that connects to the proprietary sharp port on the left of the device like the aircable but ethernet. I have seen this once before..

5. Connect to a sony memory stick. I am stuck using a sony camera. Nice, but proprietary. Cf-Ms perhaps?

6. Nice stylus. Best that fits in the pda? Just needs to be a plain stylus.

I also need to get at least 2 more batteries. Any good vendors that are reliable yet cheap? Does the new 1800Mah battery work and charge in the c860? Wondering, in case I can find 1 cheap.

I am a student, and cannot get a new Z till I graduate H/S (4 years) I am quite happy with my Z. Being near broke means I need to get everything at the cheapest possible price    Ebay is GREAT!

Thank you all!

For the charger - don't bother buying an australian psu just for a 20-day trip, it's not worth it. Find one of those switchmode multi-voltage plugpacks that is 100-240V compatible; they should be pretty easy to find in any decent electronics shop. They usually come with a bunch of tips, and one almost always fits the Z. Then you can just use a cheap wall adapter to allow it to plug into australian sockets.

Oh - make sure it's switchmode (if it's big, boxy and *heavy*, it isn't) and make sure you get the tip polarity *right* (tip positive) or you'll blow fuses in your Z's charging circuit.

Hotspots aren't very widespread here - it depends on which city you're in though. And they can be quite expensive to access. I've been saved on occasion by a nearby Gloria Jeans Coffee that did free-with-purchase hotspot access, though  (even more so when I discovered the password slips weren't one-use-only like they claimed to be ...   )

As for the batteries, you might try amazon, they seemed to have a limited quantity of cheap ones (no good for me since they wouldn't ship outside the US.) Failing that, it seems that the external PSP battery packs use the same voltage and plug as the Z, if you don't mind juggling two boxes instead of one. And they're probably readily available everywhere. See the discussion at https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11839 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11839) for more details. There's even some talk about the other external battery solutions in there as well.

Thanks! I am DEFINATLEY getting the cheap psp pack! Now all I can't figure out are:

I am not adverse to DIY projects...

5. Connect to a sony memory stick. I am stuck using a sony camera. Nice, but proprietary. Cf-Ms perhaps?

6. Nice stylus. Best that fits in the pda? Just needs to be a plain stylus.

THANKS!

just buy any SD or CF cards. 512MB is pretty standard and should be cheap anyways.

most smaller usb keyboards should be fine. the foldable ones usually cost much more. and forget bluetooth. you arent allowed to use bluetooth on a plane. nothing that transmits or receives is allowed on a plane unless explicitly approved.

there are cf cards that allow you to plug sony memory sticks into them, but they are expensive. maybe try finding a usb memory card reader that takes sony memory sticks. they are much cheaper.

any stylus will work with the zaurus, but ones that fit into the case are hard to find.

He has an 860 (as do I), so anything USB is out.

One day I'll be able to afford an upgrade...

I know bluetooth cannot be used on the plane, and that is why I am against it. c860 only has serial. No USB. USB is annoying, because I cannot use it!
