Title: Rom Upgrades And Humble Pie
Post by: Smuffle on September 21, 2005, 03:49:29 am
I'm a regular on Mac forums and snigger smugly to myself when the noooobs come in and ask easy questions.   Well now, I have to eat a little humble pie..

As soon as a C3100 is my hands, the standard sharp ROM (as if by magic) will instantly disappear and be replaced by one of the custom ROMS out there.

After a bit of Matrix style speed learning on the internet, this is what I've worked out so far.  Any corrections gratefuly received:

1) Cacko etc are like the sharp ROM.. but done properly.
2) x/qt is a x-windows kernal/GUI that sits on top of the Sharp kernal/GUI.  Applications from both can run at the same time.
3) Debian is big, slow and heavy and runs directly without the Sharp ROM.  Open office can just about be run on this.  But how do you start it? Do you need to boot a different partitian or something?
4) OpenBSD.. this is where I get a bit lost.  Is it just like Debian?
5) If the 3100 stores the OS in the upgraded 128Mb FLASH does this mean the MD is used less and increases battery life?
6) Is it possible to completely powerdown the MD? or does that draw the same current as "spin down"?

Yours confusingly,

Nooooob.

With the Sharp rom, the MD is only used for data storage and only spins up when accessing this data.

I'm not sure if these custom ROMs are c3100-ready yet.

with the exception of pdaX and OZ (which aren't even ROMs, since you can write to the filesystem) which are images built from scratch. Both offer images without qtopia and a real (but tiny and fast) xserver. If you want debian behaviour, OZ would be the way to go.

I found out by accident that it is possible to unmount the microdrive in the terminal, which I would assume would prevent it from spinning up. I don't think there is any difference between this and having the drive in "spin down" mode, though.

Since you have a 3100, as someone already pointed out, your only choice may be the Sharp ROM for the moment. It's really not that bad if you take the time to customize it and add some additional programs though.

Thanks for the tips guys, very helpful.

So are there no 3100 roms out there?  I saw something about Cacko being OK but I could be wrong.

There are various ROMS in beta stage for the C3100 (and you can find them on the forums here). As far as I know, there is no "official" release yet.

Roms I have read about or have seen for the C3100 include:
- Open BSD ( seems to work great on the C3100, but has no SD support) - > see the Open BSD forum
- Cacko ( I am currently testing it, looks very very nice!!!) -> should be released soon
- pdaXrom -> see the pdaXrom forum
