Title: 5gb Compact Flash Deal?
Post by: Remedy on October 01, 2005, 10:55:31 am
I just stumbled over this 5GB Compact flash card (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=st650211cf-u&cm_mmc=geekmail-_-newarrivals_html-_-30oct05-_-naproduct) over @ geeks.com

If you use the coupon code: FATWALLET, you get 10% off to make the price $121. It seems like a deal to me.

4GB internal storage for the 3000/3100 owners, and, the 5GB flash? 9GB of storage? Anyone know if this will work on Zaurus?

This is not a compact flash card, but rather a microdrive. But that's still a good price. On the other hand, it is used.

The product page says that it will work with any device that can use type 2 CF cards, and if that's true it should work on the Zaurus. I'm a little skeptical though. You often see similar microdrives on ebay that have been pulled from MP3 players, and many times these will not work in the Zaurus or digital cameras. That and the fact that they don't mention that it's a microdrive, make me wonder if they really know what they're talking about.

Found a review of it, here. (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/seagate-st1-5gb.html)

It looks like it came from out of their Pocket drives (http://www.seagate.com/products/personal/pocket) line.

The pocket drive seems to be selling for $132 minimum (http://www.axentmicro.com/huzrb/partdetails~af~gle~mp~ST650211URK.htm), which nullfies my first post. But, I would believe that geeks.com are just taking the drive out of the Portable pocket device container of the Seagate and selling it bare.

There is also a Lacie 8GB USB 2.0 drive I've seen floating around this week and last week for $150. I wonder what they're using in the container?

I bought one from them, and though it is recognized by my 3100, I get all sorts of Drive Seek errors in dmesg, so it doesn't seem to be able to read the disk, even after duplicating the internal hard disk and mounting it either in the external CF or the internal CF. Has anyone had any success with the factory rom and the 5 Gig ST1?

None. I spent a total of about 7 hours so far trying to get it to work. The only Microdrive brand I can openly recommend for compatibility right now is Retail version Hitachi's.

It's sad because there are some HUGE great deals to be had right now on some of these Seagates.

*shrug*

I have an ST1 that I know is an OEM unit - pulled from a Samsung MP3 player, and I get the exact same issues. I think that these OEM drives are IDE-only drives, having been crippled just like the Hitachi's in the ipods, etc.

The drive works perfectly in my CF->IDE adapter and is going to end up in an embedded computer.

Funny thing, the only way I can access (I finally did!) is by mounting in an external Compact Flash adapter WITH a powered USB hub. It seems that it may be a power related issue then, perhaps becaused higher power requirements for the Seagate vs. the Hitachi.
Any other stories out ther?

Good stuff,
we might can get some mileage out of this deal after all.  Are you still getting the seek messages with it in the external reader with powered hub?  If not it's obvious that the microdrive is needing either more voltage and/or amperage than the native CF slots on our Zaurii can offer.
Still, I'd buy it for that price even if I had to use my external usb CF adapter and self powered usb hub to make it work right. Please let us know about those errors.
Oh and good eye, thanks for the heads up and group info on this one. This could help a lot of ppl grab what they couldn't normally afford. The "used" aspect still bothers me but some times ya just gotta take the risk to win the prize.

Be Good All!,
