Can Rom 3.1v be installed by loaded onto a sd card and flash from there on a Zaurus SL5500.

no - 5500 can be flashed from CF only

What size and make is best compatible cf card to use on the SL5500.

I used Lexar x40 16M one (good enough to flash OZ) and Kingston 256M one (which is Hitachi inside).

In this case you'll need a larger card than hrw's 16MB one as the ospack file is just larger than 16Mb.
