Title: To Be Or Not To Be....
Post by: Fushnchupsh on October 12, 2005, 08:36:32 am
Hey all, first off, I have been lurking these forums for ages and really appreciating all the help that everyone has provided.

I got my beautiful c1000 a month ago in replacement of my 5500.  Now, I was attempting to flash back to the sharp rom from the pdaxrom and I got an error.  Following this the system crashed, the led doesn't turn on or anything.  However, I can still get into the diagnostic mode.  When I try to restore the NAND image it starts to restore and then I get a "format error".  Is my new baby broken?  It really would an awful shame.

Is there something else I can do?

Please, help.

Thanks so much for your time.

Are you restoring the NAND from a .DBK file or are you using the OK+on method to flash back to Sharp Rom?

Now I am using the DBK NAND restore because I can't get the "ok" menu to come up-only the diagnostic menu.

Could it be my SD card?  I've tried a CF card as well and I got the same error.  Bot were formatted FAT format.

Ugh.

Thanks,
Fish

I may be mistaken, but I think that NAND restore does not work from SD card (it does not work for sure on my C3100).

Also, not all CF cards work. So I would suggest, you try a different brand CF card ( Sandisk worked for me).

I am using a sandisk 256 card right now, both cf and SD.  I'll have to go buy a new card.

Oh, a comment and a question.

Comment:  I can't get the emergency console they talk about (D+ to come up.

Question:  If I can get the diagnostic screen to come up, does that mean it's not bricked?
Sorry for my ignorance

I am pretty sure it is not bricked. People try all kinds of things with their Zauruses, and I have not heard of many (any?) who would have bricked it... It may take some time and effort ( trial and error ) to bring it back, but it (usually) does come back... ( I had mine in "nearly dead" state too for a while - but now I am back in business )

Can you try the following?
1. Disconnect the external power supply.
2. Slide the battery switch to OFF position.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Hit the reset button (inside the battery compartment) with a stylist or pen.
5. Wait a couple of minutes for capacitors discharge, keeping your fingers crossed
6. Slide the battery switch to ON position. DON'T INSTALL THE BATTERY.
7. Press and hold both OK and Power buttons.
8. Still holding OK and Power buttons, connect the external power supply.

Just the other day I reflashed back to the Sharp ROM using my SD card. I had done so a couple of times in the past. This time, when I entered the Diagnostic Menu it said the file wasn't the correct DBK type, which was totally bogus because I knew what I was doing.

So, I reformatted the SD card to FAT 16 just to be sure and my Z happily reflashed from NAND. Sometimes reformatting your card may be necessary.

So, you can do a NAND restore from a SD card. You just need a card that is at least 256MB. The Zaurus will recognize the SD card and ask you if you want to restore from SD.

Here's how I get to the DM:
1. Remove all power sources and take the battery out.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Hold down the "D" and "M" keys while plugging in the AC power and switch the battery switch to the ON position. (Do this with the battery outside of the Zaurus).
4. By now I'm in the DM, so I put the battery back into the Z and put the battery cover back on. This will necessitate that you switch the battery switch to the OFF position and then back ON again.

It's a no go on the suggestion for the OK+ menu.  I can still get the diagnostic screen up, but when I try to restore the nand image I still get "format error."  I let my older, more experienced (or so I thought) brother look at it and he pressed the erase flash option... oh god...

Anymore suggestions?

Oh, haven't tried other cf cards yet.

How did you do this? If I remember well, the Z does not even give the option of using and SD card for a NAND flash. Or am I wrong?

Hmm. If I am not mistaken, by doing "erase flash" you can remove the bootloader - and that would fully brick the unit. ( I think that is what the trisoft users guide mentions... see at www.trisoft.de ).
