I was wondering about the differences between the pricing when bringing a C31K or a C1K to the US. Some of the differences are almost $200 (Dynamism vs. PriceJapan), What Do I loose with the cheaper one? Are these cons relevant (meaning, how much effort does it take to circunvent the things I dont get with the lower priced unit)

HMM..you are exactly in the position I was in a few months ago. The reason why I purchased my c1000 was to help out the community with the zaurusthemes.org site coming up and owning the c1000 was the perfect choice. Now we have themes for both worlds of the sl and c1000. I am currently porting over to sl6000 themes as well from the help of an individual here in the forums.
have a c1000, I regret owning one .........why?
because it can do so much that i wished it had an internal drive. Sd cards are maxed out to 1gb due to the DRM restrictions the new sd cards have implimented. The zaurus will not handle the newer sd cards.
I was concerned about battery life and usability from my expirience with the sl5500 that i did not want a microdrive to slow it drive. Sources and comments from other members here stated that you get the same bettery life between the c1000 and the c3100. only if you are using the sharprom. Other roms do not have this power saving features....yet so be warned. right now....i have 8 hours battery life.......or more. 4 if i browse wifi.
Software...............hmmmm
I managed to port over 99 percent of my software used in the sl5500. It took me 1 full month diving through these forums since i ran alot of stuff. Because of this, i updated my site to include information on snes and nes emulation and zaurus video. I even ported over some software from the sl5500 that works great on the c1000.
All in all, i am extremely happy with my unit but lack of a 4gb sd is seriously killing me.
I recommend a sl3100 if you want to have extrs storage. and if you dont need the extra storage for video, games or music, get the c1000. You seriously will not be dissapointed and there are a few individuals here that have all your asnwers.
purchasing from trisoft or steamline gives you the stuff you ened to start off.
if you buy from the other people, they do not include the seriously needed power adaptor for charing the unit. it will cost you roughly 30-50 dollars more somewere else plus shipping. think about this one. the jap stuff dont go over 120v but the sl500 power adaptor will do you fine. I charge my c1000 with the sl5500 charger which is a world power adaptor 120-250.

Good advice Cresho, but I think he was asking more about what the difference was between buying from different retailers. PriceJapan just sends you the unit as it is sold in Japan, with no conversion. I haven't done it, but I understand the conversion process isn't that tricky. If you're confident that you can do it, and you don't need as much hand-holding as Dynamism might give you in terms of support, then feel free to go with the cheaper option.

I just bought a C1000 a few weeks ago, and never had a Z before (my brother have a 5xxx). I was a Palm user (PlamIIIx, Clie N770) and wanted the Z to do what a Palm do now, at least... so i chose the C1000, and, as crescho now, i really think that the 4G hard drive is a important stuff for this little toy, mainly because it is not ONLY a PDA, it is truly a little computer. You can do so much thing with it !. The choice between C1000 or C3100 depends if you need the basic stuff (PIM, Web, Video, Mail) or will use it more like a little deskop...
About the reseller, i have choose Greekstuff4you because they have answered to my 20 emails with before I buy it :-) ..
I have appreciated their rapid answers. i have tried to contact comics.net, but it seems that he was not available at the time (i had an answer 2 week after my email for a bidding)
like icruise, I think the price difference between Dynamism and Pricejapan is the support you will have from them, and their availabilities for you.
If you choose the cheaper solution, you will have the support of this great forum !!!

- I'm with icruise on this. The "mcconvert" script is readily available on the web. I got my C1k from Chase and Company for considerably less than Dynamism, but more than PriceJapan. It came converted, but knowing now what it takes to convert, I'd feel comfortable recommending an unconverted one as long as you feel comfortable converting it. The process is very simple, but all in Japanese, though I have seen directions on the web somewhere, months ago.
- The more expensive distributors also give you support if the unit fails. C&C has a shop right in Japan, and they handle all warranty returns for you. If you're like me and have no problems, that's not money well spent, but I'd think if there is a problem, that warranty proxy would suddenly become priceless.
- I personally have never missed the hard drive, and got the C1k because it was $150 less than a C3k (no C3100 at that time), and a 4GB CF drive costs $150. I also read a number of other forums and discovered that the microdrives are rather fragile ... one drop while it's actually using the drive and it's toast, though parked it's pretty durable. I really really didn't like the idea of my only storage going the way of the dinosaur because I was listening to some music and dropped it!
- If I wanted the HD that badly I could just get it later. I don't do that much music (only five CDs on the SD right now), and I find the 1GB limit to be a little annoying, but not all that. The only thing I wish I could so is stick some swap in, but with a little memory management I haven't actually had any trouble there, either.

Support is about the only thing extra you get for the price difference. The only support that I would pay for is the proxy warranty support in case something breaks and you need to send it back for warranty stuff. I think most local importers will do that for you and that is why I would choose one of them. Unfortunately, there is no local importers where I live but if you have one, then I would go for it. But then again, it depends on your shopping behaviour as well. Some people just buy something cheap without worrying about warranty and if it breaks they just buy a new one. The Zaurus is not too expensive and could fall into this category as well if you like.
