Title: Flash Upgrade
Post by: guylhem on October 17, 2005, 11:21:24 pm
Hello

Since I'm quite close to actually upgrading the SL6000 flash, I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a simpad flash upgrade?

I'd need some help - preferably from someone with a JTAG'ed simpad :-)

Mine is JTAGed (a small problem with the bootloader some time back), what kind of help would you need?

Hello

Well I'd be interested in a simple experiment - removing the J3 strataflash (16 Mb per chip) and replacing it by greater chips (say min 32 Mb each, or even 128 each !) to boost internal storage.

After that, a new bootloader would have to be installed by JTAG. If you feel like trying I can check the chip reference. Finding/soldering the chips could be troublesome however.

I was afraid it might be something like that... I think my soldering skills are very rusty by now. Just inserting the jtag header I almost destroyed the simpad, as one track jumped out. Luckily I managed to solder it into place at both ends. So I won't be able to help you much here, at least not until I manage to buy a new soldering station and practice a lot more...

Keep in mind that the flash chips in the 6K are NAND, and StrataFlash is NOR, so you can't use the same chips as in the 6K upgrade.

I haven't had any spare in months. Not sure where to buy them by themselves, but about 90% of the newer Pocket PCs use StrataFlash, so you could pick up a broken screen Pocket PC on eBay and rip the chips out. Most PPCs use two chips for flash, so picking up a PPC with 64MB flash should yeild two 32MB chips.
