Title: 1.0rc3 Released
Post by: guylhem on October 23, 2005, 01:50:44 pm
hello

as promised 1.0rc3 has been released on time.
you can get it from http://externe.net/zaurus/guylhem-rom/syst0006.dbk-1-0rc3 (http://externe.net/zaurus/guylhem-rom/syst0006.dbk-1-0rc3)

i am actually uploading it, along with its new readme and installation instructions. the md5sum is ae2c06f454b741bece74cdab8c664d46

bug reports would be welcome. the only known bug i have noticed is sharp music player has problem with the external media - no other application has that problem, and since i intend to replace non free application by free software application, that shouldn't be a problem for long.

a limitation i am aware of is the lack of cf drivers for all kind of usb and bluetooth cards, but you can easily compile your own kernel and drivers if needed.

i hope you'll all like the fruit of longs nights of work.

enjoy,
guylhem

Guylhem -
This is great.  I downloaded and installed without a problem.  Only difficulty is connection icon does not show up for built-in wireless.  I added WLAN config, but no way to use it.  In the previous version, the connection dialogue would pop-up when I brought up Opera.  That doesn't happen now, so I don't know how to activate the link.

Gorth
Thanks for all the great work.

re oss software... do you plan to make an up-to-date konqueror?
full kong runs in pdax.... so a roll your own static version might go, but it would be enormous.
Maybe redoing konq embedded for 2006?  would be chance to get flash going, and other stuff opera doesn't handle.  And I suppose it coul be done to handle file browsing  stuff too...
might be cool if it wasn't too hellish to pull off.
wil check out the rom in a few days

konq - no I don't like it a lot. webcore would be a better idea, with a qtopia interface. a lot of work however IMHO.

regarding the network, I'll check that and post a fix

first impressions....

wifi doesn't work, i can create a wifi with get online but nothing happens then
sd bug persists, cf ok
when creating wifi lan ip, the "dot" key doesn't work, obliged to write it with the virtual keyboard.
package manager has the same bug as before... the only choice is internal flash and says someting went wrong (but he says sorry )

same pbs after a reboot.
will test again tomorow.

thanks anyway and keep it up

rip, can you detail the sd bug? here it works fine with a fat32 formatted sd.

the "." key when creating a lan ip is imho also present on the sharp rom.

What I see on the sd mount problem is that sd formatted ext2 mounts as vfat to /mnt/card on guylhem rom.  The same sd mounts correctly as ext2 on pdaxrom.  Oddly when back to guylhem rom I issued "umount /mnt/card" (attempting to remount  with -type ext2) the shell replied "Invalid argument".

hi guylhemn, tell me more about what you want me to tell you, any function you want me to check?
its a 128 mini sd card with its sd adaptator seen ok with my previous pdaxrom.
seems to be your icons in the tab documents.

for teh dot pb, it was working ok wih all the roms i tried before, even your previous guylhem's rom.

Title: 1.0rc3 Released
Post by: rip on October 24, 2005, 03:58:33 am
doen some more test in the train , héhé

seems you've created some scripts for the wifi:
net.wifi.local
net.wifi.sniff
net.wifi.scanap
etc...

seems to wake up the wifi interface but no hotspot available at work to check.
will check it at home again.
the network tool in settings is not listing any wifi interface but "wifi accounts" are created and when i create an irda account for example, it is in the list and make the net icon appear but still no choice or any wifi.

also when i do a ikpg install it drops me a full list:
error: file not found: /usr/lib/lists/Guylem_Distribution
you probably want to run 'ipkg update'
mkdir: cannot create directory //home/tmp/ipkg/justreader/
permission denied

so tried in root, same issue
chmod 777 on / and on /mnt/cf and /mnt/card
same issue too.

note that i've reflashed from start this morning without any sd inserted and the same sd bug in tab appear.

hope it helps and tell me if you want me to test deeper but you'll have to tell me also the steps as i'm not a linux guru at all.

Hello

Regaring the
 - dot problem - I'll check that and see if I can fix it. If it works everywhere else I sure can fix it !
 - sd - ditto. Can you please post me a copy of pdaxrom /etc/fstab and /etc/sdcontrol /etc/pcmcia/ide.opts? I did hardcode vfat in the latters since some people had issues else. umount works fine here. I also introduced an error in the sd init.d script which I'm fixing (path of sharp_mmc module)
 - wifi scripts - that's because I introduced a mistake in /etc/wlan/wlan.conf. They won't work without a fix:
ESSID_wlan0=""
ENABLE_wlan0=y

I will release a updated version with these 3 bugs fixed soon. Yet the net wizard won't work yet- I have to check /etc /opt/Qtopia/etc and /home/zaurus from the previous release to see where is the mistake. If you are actually running the previous release, a tarball of these files could help fixing that faster.

ok for the dot, i think it wos working fine in last guylhem release so you will find the pb i believe.
sd pb: hope you will find a fix .
hope also you will find a fix for programm install bug as it think its related to sd bug.

if wifi pb comes from typo mistake, it's cool, quick to resolve.

most important for me is the ability to install prog where i want: internal/cf/sd
then wifi.

merci guylhem et continue comme ca!

Regarding wifi.

To connect to a WEP enabled network I used this script:

Code: [Select]
ZAURUSIP=192.168.0.15
GATEIP=192.168.0.1
MYWLAN=NETESSID
WEPEY=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable
wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_hostwep decrypt=true encrypt=true
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_mibset mibattribute=dot11WEPDefaultKeyID=1
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_mibset mibattribute=dot11ExcludeUnencrypted=true
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_mibset mibattribute=dot11PrivacyInvoked=true
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_mibset mibattribute=dot11WEPDefaultKey0=$WEPKEY
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_mibset mibattribute=dot11WEPDefaultKey1=$WEPKEY
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_mibset mibattribute=dot11WEPDefaultKey2=$WEPKEY
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_mibset mibattribute=dot11WEPDefaultKey3=$WEPKEY
wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid=$MYWLAN authtype=opensystem
ifconfig wlan0 $ZAURUSIP up
route add default gw $GATEIP

Regarding SD, just executing this, fixed my problems:

Code: [Select]
modprobe sharp_mmcsd_m
mount -o noatime /dev/mmcda1 /mnt/card/

BTW, mine is an MMC card so this may or may not work with SD.

Guylhem: Great work! Thank you very much!

great!
will it be persistent? or needed to be done again?

will try the wifi script later on.

thanks you  very much

It seems that the problem has something to do with sharp kernel module, maybe just loading it on startup fixes the problem even between reboots, will try it later.

I also got "no such device". Tried modprobing wlanctl-ng, wlan-ng, prism2, hostap, and everything else I can think of, but get "can't locate module whatever" response.
(Not really sure what I should be modprobing anyway, so these are just guesses.)

Try to reboot without the SD card.

If the trick does not work at all, look at /dev/mmcda* to see what devices are available and use those dev instead.

If there is no one, maybe you could reload the kernel module and create device nodes with mknod:

Code: [Select]
mknod  -m 644 /dev/mmcda b 60 0
mknod  -m 644 /dev/mmcda1 b 60 1
mknod  -m 644 /dev/mmcda2 b 60 2

And try again. If the error persists, tell us exactly what the error message is.

Good luck!

modprobe just loads kernel modules ("device drivers").

Those modules have nothing to do with SD card, they are wifi related.

To load wlan module you can issue a:
Code: [Select]
modprobe prism2_usb prism2_doreset=1
sharp_mmcsd_m is the sharp binary module for SD and MMC cards.

I am not able to reproduce your problem.

Maybe you can describe the steps performed before you got the error message and will try to reproduce it in my Z.

regarding the wifi issues you must change /etc/wlan/wlan.conf

Attached a minimal (if you must type it by hand) and a complete (if you can copy it) file to that message

Just wondering, maybe there is something wrong with mounts. Is there any /mnt/card or /dev/mmcda1 in /proc/mounts? Trying to find out why you are having problems with SD I found /dec/mmcda1 mounted in /proc/mounts but not in /mnt/card so I tried (as root):

1) umount /mnt/card
2) rmmod sharp_mmcsd_m
3) modprobe sharp_mmcsd_m
4) mount /mnt/card

some commands displayed errors (none of them harmful) but cannot remember exactly which ones did work and which didn't.

This was a little bit wierd but haven't found why happened.

A typo here:
  WEPEY=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

  should read WEPKEY=XX:XX:...
also XX:XX,etc should be your WEP key in HEX
and do not forget to put your network ESSID after MYWLAN=

And here, before:
  wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable

the module should be loaded with:
  modprobe prism2_usb prism2_doreset=1

Very sorry for the inconvenience.

BTW, Guylhem has submitted to the forum the conf-files for wlan.

I noticed the (WEPEY) WEPKEY typo and fixed that previously. I had also put my essid in the script. I do not have WEP set up. Should I set WEPKEY=none or something like that?

For the moment, I have reverted to my default Sharp rom, but I can re-install rc3 and test the new scripts Guylhem posted as well as your suggestions if he/you need them tested by other users. Just let me know, and I will be happy to test further. But if it is not necessary, then I will await rc4. Thanks!

regarding the SD - fix the path of the module in /etc/initd.d/sd start script. It needs sharp_mmc modules from /lib/modules , whick I moved from kernel/block to net/ (only because I put the modules I am not working on in a separate directory, to avoid accidently removing them as I did once or twice and add to ask here for the original files)

regarding ipkg install - found the problem. That's because I updated busybox and forgot to add support for tar options --no-same-owner and --no-same-permissions  . Fixed

BTW here is the new busybox

really sorry guylhem, as i told you i'm a newbie.
unzipped your busybox but din't where to replace it.
so guessed...
renamed to busybox.conf and replaced the existing one in /etc
but no luck, same pb after a reboot and reset
for the sd fix, i really didn't understood a word of what to fix/replace.

is it difficult for you to repackage a .dbk including all fixes , perhaps it takes a lot of time to do .
but for a newbie like me its difficult to know where to change things.

also for wlan txt file, replaced it and rebooted, same issue, no wlan account available after having created a new with get online.

or perhaps you could edit the first page of this thread with all the fix and path you've made (for an easier view)

no critisize at all, guylhem, just a way to make it easier for users like me.

merci

I still see a prob w/sd mount, even after changing out the init.d/sd script.  Boot messages post the SD service starting, the correct module is loaded, but the filesystem is still not mounted correctly.  Directories do not display, even though mount -l shows it mounted ext2.  The only way I have found to mount the sd successfully is to issue the command identified by orodriguez from the command line as root.

ok, first quick impressions:
dot pb fixed (as in your changelog)
sd mount fixed
prog install in internal memory ok.

wifi icon is still off (not available) even after having created an account through get online.
i'm still not able to install any pb either on sd and cf (greyed out).

testing still in progress.

Hello

That's what I expected - I haven't fixed the networking icon issue yet. please use the wifi script meanwhile

Regarding installing to CF/SD, I'll have to dig it further. It may be due to missing links/band configuration.

Hopefully both issues will be fixed in rc5. Meanwhile, please keep looking for bugs guys ! If you don't report them I can't fix them.

well, will continue.
could you quicly explain how to use the wifi scripts?
i'm able to launch them but what do i have to do then?

hope you will fix quicly the cf/sd install prog because it will block big prog install (opera 7.55?)

will continue testing. can count on me
thanks

Hello

Cant calculate it right now. Hopefully the image is good since rip succeeded.
Could you please (if you still have the sharp rom) do the following for me on your Zaurus:

tar zcvf /mnt/cf/etc0.tar.gz /opt/Qtopia/etc/
tar zcvf /mnt/cf/etc1.tar.gz /etc/
tar zcvf /mnt/cf/etc2.tar.gz /home/etc/
tar zcvf /mnt/cf/etc3.tar.gz /home/zaurus/

It will create 4 files on your CF. Replace "cf" by "card" for a SD. Then please post each etc.tar.gz here.

That will help me fix both the install and the network icon bug by comparing my settings to sharp defaults

Getting message:

tar: creation of compressed not internally supported by tar, pipe to busybox gunzip

If I add | busybox gzip to end of command, it says the same thing, but to use -f to force. Adding -f to tar or to busybox gzip does not seem to help.

Suggestions?

i confirm, just downloaded and renamed to system0006.dbk.
nand restore and GO. all good.

do you need me to do any functions to help?

here are my impressions:

added:
-qpdf2
-kapi
-kopi

made it slooooow and crashed!
removed kapi/kopi, runs better but seems to keep slower than pdaxrom or default rom. even in medium speed.
opening a .doc with justreader is really slow, took me almost 10 second to have the hand on it.

will try to load opera 8.55 (multimodal) lightened.
still can't surf in wifi, don't know how to use scripts (and my home network has fixed ip adress and wep key.
pagedown/pageup , hardware buttons are working ok. will continue testing

Actually, I was looking for the md5sum for rc4, not an md5sum program. I just like to check it because sometimes downloads get corrupted, or a flakey CF card may corrupt the file. Anyway, for those who don't yet have an md5sum program, Thanks!

I have not been able to get a tar.gz of the files asked for. Can someone give me another way to do that other than the way Guylhem posted above. I just keep getting the above-mentioned errors. (tar: creation of compressed not internally supported by tar, pipe to busybox gunzip). I have not yet installed rc4, as Guylhem wanted those tarred-up directories from the Sharp rom (/etc, /home/etc, /home/zaurus, and /opt/Qtopia/etc.) to work on the network icon bug.
Title: 1.0rc3 Released

MD5SUM of Guylhem's RC4 (I flashed it flawlessly):

610dfbe8556526f07e94d5c212fbf4b6  syst0006.dbk-1-0rc4

For the tar files, this should work:

tar cv /opt/Qtopia/etc/ | busybox gzip > /mnt/cf/etc0.tar.gz
tar cv /etc/ | busybox gzip > /mnt/cf/etc1.tar.gz
tar cv /home/etc/ | busybox gzip > /mnt/cf/etc2.tar.gz
tar cv /home/zaurus/ | busybox gzip > /mnt/cf/etc3.tar.gz

BTW, RC4 is working almost fine for me. I had a couple of random hangs installing and removing software but they were almost harmless. Also tab-editor is not working properly, it cannot delete elements though strangely enough it is able to create them (workaround is hand-deleting unwanted files in /opt/Qtopia/apps/)

For me, this one is usable enough. Thank you very much Guylhem!

Regards.

Even if they are symlinks, tar files should store them (just the links so If one untar those files he won't get the files pointed to). Maybe busybox tar differs more than expected from GNU's or there is something wrong in my command line.

I am flashing right now with the original stock rom (I did a NAND backup almost just when I bought it) so I'll make a snapshot of the whole tree, and post those files here (hope I am luckier  ).

No I didn't installed anything in sd or cf because I prefer leaving those only for data, OTOH menu options for that are disabled so it may not be possible right now.

Also I do not use windows nor qtopia desktop (just using KOPi and downloading .ics files to my computer).

I never tried it but I remember having read that sync is performed running a Samba Server in the Z and opening a conection from the desktop, because of that you have to clean root password prior syncing with qtopia and maybe your problem is related to Samba auth or something like that. Is there any log in qtopia desktop? Maybe there is something useful in there.

Here is a copy of etc files and home/zaurus of the original Sharp Rom (ver 1.5.4)

/opt/Qtopia links to /home/QtPalmtop
/etc links to /home/etc

I have made a copy of the whole tree If you need any other files.

the_oak: I had trouble using busybox gzip (sharp rom version) so maybe that is the problem you had when archiving those directories. At last I tarred the files on the Z and used gzip on my desktop.

I have rc4 installed now. Internet works using included script (/usr/local/net.wifi.local). Just edit that script (comes on rom) and put your essid and other pertinent info. For now I created an inelegant little script, made it executable, and attached it to an icon using the Launcher utility. I also did the same with a script that runs the net.wifi.off script. So, we still do not have the taskbar icon, but this works fairly convenient for me.

Package installer now works, although I have had it lock up my Zaurus quite a few times. Had to stab the zaurus in the back to recover, but programs did install in spite of lock-up. It seems to work better if I install or uninstall one program at a time. I have been able to install my bought programs (Eligo, Candycruncher so far) and really like being able to remove some of the programs that I don't use. Also installed opie-screenshotapplet, and irk-zaurus-j. Pockettop ir keyboard works, and Belkin F8U1500T ir keyboard works. Targus mini optical mouse works without adding any extra drivers.

ISSUES:

1.  "Use thick fonts" (under Themes >> Font) still causes font corruption for me. (Not terribly important, but a "bug" nonetheless.)

2.  In landscape view (rotated) the system fonts are very tiny everywhere, on tabs, under icons, within programs. Is there a system font config file to edit and fix this?

3.  Kino2 seemed to work OK at first, and I don't know what I have done to it, but it now locks up frequently, will not respond to anything except a stab in the back. May just need adjustments in it's settings.

4.  Got qpegps installed and working fine.   What file do I edit to automatically insmod a driver (serial_cs).

5.  I had problems editing files in zeditor. When editing kino2.conf, I got "Write Error!!!" and "Stream: Please investigate the file...". I uninstalled the included 3.2.2 version, and installed a 2.1.6 version that I had previously downloaded, and problem went away. So I guess this is a zeditor bug, not a rom bug.

6.  Would be nice to be able to install to sd. (I know this is already planned for next release, but thought I would mention it anyway.)

I have flashed back 1.0rc4 and had almost the same issues:

1. FONTS:

- "Use thick fonts" causes font corruption when Z has its display in vertical position.
- When rotated ("right-handed") fonts are tiny. Tried the other way around ("left-handed") and fonts are OK!

2. PACKAGE INSTALLER:

- Same locks here.
- I removed some packages and installed all the KxPI suite, kismet (do not know if it works yet), djview (built with guylhem toolchain), stock vga terminal, qpdf from the feed, kino2 and mplayer. Almost everything works as expected despite lock-ups.

3. QTOPIA REBOOTING:

- When an alarm event (kopi-alarm) is fired up, qtopia restarts. Maybe has something to do with apmsleep? (It happens when Z is ON also).

---
For Kino2 (0.4.2b) and mplayer (mplayer-bvdd 1.1.5-1 - atty), it works fine for me (have not tried it a lot but with a couple of videos). My kino2 preferences are (everything not commented is off):

General-Tab
Enable cache:4096

Video-Tab
Drop frames: ON
Enable doublebuffering: ON
Enable software-scaling: ON
Build AVI index: ON
Enable audio autosync: ON

I have attached my /etc/fb.modes and /home/zaurus/.mplayer/config

orodriguez:

Yep, turning rotation to right-handed is what causes the tiny fonts in landscape mode. As you say, left-handed rotation fonts work fine. (But I would like to use  right-handed rotation with my ir keyboard, or I guess I could use the little mirror thing that comes with the keyboard.)

I found what caused my kino2 problems. It has nothing to do with the rom. It was my own "improvement". In an attempt to have larger fonts in landscape mode, I had changed the "Screen Font" size in the Playlist tab to 36. Putting that back to 24 fixed that problem. Kino2 now works fine.

Also, the battery applet is much nicer, reporting battery depletion in smaller increments. It may just be my imagination, but the battery seems to last longer too.

I think that the package installer problems may have something to do with moving shortcuts around in the Launcher (Tab Setting) applet. The default Sharp rom also has problems removing shortcuts when uninstalling programs. I think that maybe the uninstaller looks for the shortcuts where it originally put them, and does not deal well with the changes. (This is just a guess.)

Guylhem:

One more thing, what file has my addressbook in the Sharp rom, so I can move it to this rom? Or are you working on being able to sync with Qtopia Desktop?

Oh geez.  That's not good at all.  Came here to read up one last time before I flashed my 6000 to see if any new issues or tips could be found.  The rotation fonts (right handed rotation is a must) are bad but I could deal with it.  I did not know at all that there were probs preventing syncing right now.  Thought I had read through the known bugs thoroughly- gonna go rescope again to see if I missed anything else.

Anyhow, the non-sync'ing problem completely "sync/sinks" my ability to use guyhelm.  That's one of the few REAL gotcha's.  I'm more than willing to work around the rest.

Darn,

Hello

The right/left handed problem is normal - to save on flash space I remove the other fonts. I'll make a package available.

Regarding think fonts being garbled, this is because I replaced default qtopia fonts my new fonts. My fonts skills musn't be that good :-)

I'll try to replace them one last time and if it still does't work, restore the default fonts.

Syncing should work - I haven't tested that but it should work. What problem do you have? Did you set up the usb port (script in /etc) to be used as "network"?

It can also be used in usb-storage mode (the CF or SD are seen like a USB key by your host pc) or serial. I simply disable it to save on boot time.

I'll check it out.

PS: the battery improvements are real. Did them in kernel space, and they are visible in user space. Simply improved the granularity of power reports to be 1% by 1%

The font package to fix right-handed fonts would be nice.

When I put the zaurus in the cradle and turn it on, nothing happens. There is no "PC Link" applet in the zaurus to check usb network settings. Where is the script that I edit to get the desktop PC to "see" the zaurus so as to be able to sync with it?

The only scripts I see in /etc having to do with usb are: usbcontrol, and usbh. How do I set them up to be network?

Edit: I found the "PC Link" applet. It is named "Samba" and is on the Network tab. But I still need to edit a script to get the desktop PC to detect it when plugged in.

Thanks a lot for the tarfiles. I will try to work on rc5 soon.

Please sum up the issues here:
- missing network icon
- add wep 128 script
- add bluetooth cf module
- add righthand rotated fonts
- test sync by usb and wifi (use F10 iirc to start sync, but the hardware button on the cradle should work too)
- add install to sd/cf
- create a sharp lookalike start menu to remove apps installation/deinstall issues
- update zeditor, add irk (waiting for the ir kbd to make sure it works fine for that one)

if something must be fixed for rc5, please tell it now.

rip: regarding the lockups/slowness, that's because I set up aggressive powersaving by default. try to click on the battery icon and enable overclocking. I **underclock** by default, since I'm more than satisfied by the default speed and welcome the additional battery time (now you know why it reports 1% by 1%)

kapi/kopi are **not** recommanded. they are slow. qalendar is much better. for the addressbook, there's definitevely a missing app. if you want to import your datebook/contacts etc, copy the dtm directory to your home

Right, that's an interesting but I can't explain. If you remove Documents/Documents (a symlink to itself) it just get recreated for no reason. Sharp weirdness.

The circular file problem seems to be fixed by going to the "Documents" tab, selecting "Internal Flash 2", then click and hold on the "Documents" folder, and select "Delete" from the menu that comes up. Next, click on "File>>New folder". Name the new folder "Documents", and click OK. That seems to fix it.

It is probably some remnant of Sharp's original circular symlink filesystem design.

By the way, I also appreciate the battery saving setting.

Now for my latest issue.  I am able to get my XP machine (yeah yeah, evil M$, I know) to see the Z6k as a storage device by running the usbd.net script, however, I can only see the /mnt/cf card, and not the /mnt/cf2 card in the expansion sled.  Additionally, after about a minute it seems that Qtopia tries restarting.  The screen goes completely black for about a minute, then it displays the login screen (with the Tux pic) and shows:

"Welcome to zaurus on tty1
Linux: 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix (armv5tel)
0  sessions are opened at Mon Nov 7  2005 18:01:03

You have 10 seconds to log in or Qtopia will be started.
zaurus login:  killall: qserver: no process killed
                                                                  killall: q
server: no process killed
"
Then the screen goes black again for a few seconds and then I get the screen I described above.  It just keeps cycling back and forth.  While this is going on, I still appear to have connectivity to the Z as a USB Mass Storage device.  Am I not supposed to run Qtopia if I want to run any of the usbd functions?

hello

they do conflict. please see /etc/usbcontrol script  which controls that and edit it to fit your needs. In your case, use hdb instead of hda.

I'd recommand using hdb2 ie the second partition of the cf in the sled to remove any potential problem with qtopia.

you should be able to run qtopia ! I did run it while in usbstorage mode, with the 2nd half of my 1gb sd used for that very purpose

i'm using tipterm ipk to console into my rtrs in my job.
the usual command is:
terminal /dev/ttyS0 9600 and then go for it.
i don't know why but it is not working with your release.
annoying for my daily basis job but i totally understand thats its not a priority as i'm perhaps the only one to use this ipk,
are you usin /dev/ttyS0 for something else?

Hello

I had no time lately, and a physician job at a "special" hi-security official building where any electronic gizmo requires a written authorisation from the director detailing the device, it's model, serial number, capabilities, etc. Anyway, spare batteries and chargers are forbidden, and spending a day on a single battery seems unlikely. I can barely bring my digital wristwatch. So there's nothing I can do at the moment :-/

Will keep you guys informed. Meanwhile I received a donation from Tim Haak - his dead  6000. It's dead as can be (it's not simply a battery problem, tried everything I know again) and my odds to revive it are very low. Yet it would be an ideal companion to my 6000, because I would mean a *dedicated* machine to work on the Rom. If anyone has another dead pda, who knows- I may turn both into a working one?

Just flashed for first time to the G rom! I had to buy a CF card specially for it, as the one I had was too small (64MB formatted down to 61), and a borrowed one didn't work :-(  So, now I'm a happy 6000'er. My brother wants to borrow my 860, so I've got to the 6000 fully up to spec, and am now trying to install the few extra applications I need.

The first thing I noticed was that the network config tool Bluetooth PAN applet is the same as the BT dialup applet.  Wlan should suffice, but the 6000 isn't too sensitive, I get better coverage in my home from a strategically placed bluetooth adaptor on my firewall than from the wireless internet I share with my neighbour.

The other key thing I am missing is kismet!

Hello,
I need a little help getting the wireless working in RC4. I replaced /etc/wlan.conf with the new one Guylhem posted in a previous post, so i should be ready to go. Here is what i have been doing and maybe someone can set me straight.

In terminal i run net.wifi.local. It starts the wifi and green light comes on. I then open Opera and attempted to browse a web page. ANY web page i put in times out. It attempts to connect but sits there at looking up www......

When i look at my router i can see that my Z has been issued an IP so it should be able to conect. If i run ifconfig i also shows an IP. I am not sure what i am doing wrong. I have no WEP. I am using the default settings in wlan.conf which it set for ESSID = any.

Thanks,
-Mark

I have also noticed an oddity with the battery applet when you reboot. I dont know if it is a bug or not. but when i reboot the battery applet comes back and only reports good/low and so on. Then if i reboot again it will sometimes come back to the 100% and so on reporting. I dont know how to make it do one or the other. Sometimes i have to reboot several times and then sometimes i just give up b/c i takes forever to reboot.

If anyone has any idea the cause of this oddity please let me know. Is there a way i can load some module after it is booted up in QT in order to get the proper battery reporting back?

By the way i got my problem in the previous post resolved. In order to get the wifi working i had to modify the net.wifi.local script to use my default gateway of my linksys router of 192.168.xxx.xxx. and then it worked.

By having to start the wifi like this does that mean that if you find a local hot spot that has Wifi that we will not be able to connect using this script b/c it seems like you have to manually assign the IP address i the script. Is there away to have a DHCP server assign the IP. If i am at a Hotspot i will probably not know the default gateway address to configure the script. Maybe i am missing something here.

Have you tried using minicom instead of tipterm - not saying it will fix ttyS problem but it might be more informative

on the Z, does "ipconfig -a" tell you it has an IP? Does "netstat -r" tell you it has a default route? Are the contents of "/etc/resolv.conf" correct for your network - i.e. a valid DNS resolver?

speculatrix,

What should /etc/resolv.conf contain. It does not contain anything correct for me it now says:
#wlan0 begin
nameserver 4.2.2.1
nameserver 4.2.2.4
#wlan0 end
nameserver 4.2.2.1
nameserver 4..2.2.4

I am not sure what it should be? I have a linksys router which is my gateway. Any help?

Also anyone have the problem that they loose the nice % display in battery applet after they reboot?

Thanks,
-Mark

Some broadband routers provide a DNS resolver/proxy, they're probably OK now, but to be honest, easier to use your ISP's resolvers... take a look on your attached PC to find out what its nameservers are. In windows, run "ipconfig /all", on linux "cat /etc/resolv.conf" and put the values into you Z

anyway, the 4..2.2.4 definitely looks wrong. Remove all the entries and leave just the "nameserver a.b.c.d" found from above.

Thanks I have got it working. But what if i go to a hotspot that has wireless like some of the coffee shops around here or up to the school, where they have wireless everywhere. How will i get it to connect if I dont know the IP address or the DNS servers or any of that stuff. with the default rom you could just put "any" into the network config appliction. I know Guylhem has said that the network app is not working but is there any other way to get this to work with out that app.

How does the default rom do it. I imagine it is not by the scripts we have to use on the Guylhem rom. Is it hard to fix?

I would guess that one wifi0 or wlan0 interface is up, it will run "dhcpcd -i " to get an IP address.
Anyone want to try this?
