Excellent news.
I'm downloading right now.
Apart from the bug fixes, what changes can C7xx/860 users look forward to? Is this just bug fixes with enhancements for the Cxx00 models?
Many thanks,
ltrm
-
All how downloaded before THIS post please download again and reflash.
-
Thank you very much for fixing that horrible bug. I'd been holding off upgrading from RC10 for that (although of course it suffers from the same bug); now I'll take the plunge.
Well done to all concerned!

Ok I have been testing apmsleep with my 6000l. If it is on battery power, apmsleep +00.05 does not work. The zaurus suspends but will not resume after 5 min. No errors when I do resume with the power button. Now if I apmsleep +00:05 and wait for the 5 min to pass, then put it in the cradle it will resume. If its in the cradle when i issue the apmsleep command it will not resume unless i remove it from the cradle and put it back, where it will resume when its put back. If its in the cradle, and suspended I can not ssh into it so I know its really suspended not just with a blank screen.
If any other test or info is needed please let me know.
-edit-
it seems to be power not just the cradle that is the important part.

sashz, any news about c860 xserver optimizations? Is the versione in RC12 better than the one in RC10? Or still the same?
-
sashz,
what is the url for the 'corgi feed'? thanks

Are the keyboard kernel modules and driver from Kopsis for Belkin/Pocketop keyboards included in RC12?
I don't see zkbdd in the feed.
-
I feel a noticeable speed improvement in this RC. Things are more responsive and smoother than before. Actually I do find it faster than Sharp/Cacko ROM now. Bravo!

Just upgraded from the RC12-test release. Works great over here (Akita, Toshiba 1GB CF and 512 MB SD for storage, D-Link DCF-660W for wlan). Being able to play back videos from an NFS-mounted partition with mplayer in fullscreen still amazes me. Native and cross devkit is also very nice and complete. And KaPI/KoPI makes for a great PIM.
Thanks a lot for this great release! Your "ROM" really turns this device into something useful. A geek's dream come true.
Cheers,
Albert

is it possible to have a root archive for a dual boot easily ? (like RC10.4)
I have some problems to use it now, maybe RC12 resolves it.

Is anyone experiencing problems on SL-C860? My Z just hangs after installation on "Rebooting system" Md5sums of initrd.bin,updater.sh and tools.tar are ok. After NAND Flash restore I got the working RC11 so apparently it isn't a hardware problem.
-
I have flashed RC12 on my 860.
Did you format your user partition?
-
pgas
I did. I've even repartitioned Z after the first failure just to have a guarantee.
Root had 118M in size so I've applied a >64M fix when I flashed rc9 or rc10.
-
I don't repartition my Z so it's one difference.
Did you try a hard reset (by removing the AC power and the battery)?
-
I can only see a blank screen after this.
-
Just to be sure you didn't download the .zip right after the announcement right?
There was a probleme with the first images.
-
pgas
Right! Look, I am so stupid I haven't seen Laze's message. I've downloaded image right after the announcement but managed to flash it only yesterday. Thanks a lot.
-
Just a quick note to say RC12 is working wonderfully on my 760. Of course, RC11 did too.
-
Not sure what you've changed but the user experience in RC12 is far better than it was in RC11 - great work. I may even keep PdaXrom as my standard OS but I have to find a way to transfer my information from Cacko first
-
hi i just downloaded the new rc12 ROM and tried to contact every feed i can find but the log gives a 404 error. It looks like it is trying to add "/Packages" to every string i give as a source. I cannot install any ipks because of this. Is this a problem with a config file for the Package Manager or something because i am not aware of one. I am pleased with all the other defaults for the new ROM tho... Any help would be greatly appreciated in the meantime.
-
the package manager now uses /etc/ipkg.conf for a config file.
The feed http://mail.pdaxrom.org/rc12/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/ (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/rc12/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/) seems be available at the time I write this.
Do you update before installing something?
is internet working on your zaurus?
I have some doc on managing package here : http://pierre.ellh.com/ipk.txt (http://pierre.ellh.com/ipk.txt)
(if someone feels like doing correction/modification he is welcome...)
-
ipkg doesn't seem to work. No matter which feed I use I get:
sed: bad option in substitution expression
Downloading /Packages ...
/Packages: Unsupported scheme.
ipkg_download: ERROR: f\Failed to retrieve /Packages, returning
ipkg_update: Error downloading /Packages
to /usr/lib/ipkg/lists/http://mail.pdaxrom.org/rc12/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed
Any idea what's going on?
I'm using a C1000.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
RC12 is awesome! Kismet works pretty much out of the box once the hostap modules ipk is installed. The USB storage works. And whatever you guys did to mplayer, it runs so much better. xrandr also works, which is great for setting the resolution to 320x240 when using mplayer or snes9x. Great job. Thanks again.

I think the filesystem IO charset under pdaXrom isn't UTF-8. This is a problem for me since I can't access many of my files and folder which have Japanese names.
Is there a way I can somehow specify the charset? It must be a low-level issue, since it affects chrooted debian under pdaXrom RC12 which under Cacko runs fine and accesses these Japanese files.
How can I do this?

Testing on C3100.... all seems well but when i suspend i cannot resume !

It should be in the FAQ really. Like previous post suggested, the hardware clock needs to be kept in UTC.

/etc/pcmcia/bluetooth line 22 should state "/sbin/cardctl ident 0" instead
of "/sbin/cardctl ident" in order for bluetooth to work on 3100
PuthreGuy

ROX-Session doesn't work with RC12. It needs ROX-Lib2 version 1.9.16; the version en the feed seems to be 1.9.15. ROX-Filer is OK.
Edit: Archive doesn't work either

It should better say "/sbin/cardctl ident $SOCKET" to support both CF sockets properly.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102580\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Apparently so. However, the FAQ entry really should suggest some other method for doing this than hwclock --utc, now that there is no hwclock easily available. I don't remember exactly how it works, but it might be sufficient to write an /etc/adjtime that says, for example,
0.000000 1131415328 0.000000
0
UTC
If this is sufficient, wouldn't it be a good idea to put this in the root file system to start with? If not, wouldn't it be an equally good idea to include hwclock (and put the instructions somewhere)?
-
Hey guys...
This is my first upgrade, so bear with me. Do I need to reflash to upgrade? If I do that, I will lose all of my settings/icons/etc?!!? Im willing, as it sounds like R12 is worth it, but I hate to lose all my configs...
-

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102819\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
You don't /need/ to use ntp. And as per the instructions you don't even need ntpdate either (just use the date command (or whatever those instructions said) to set the clock initially.
After following those instructions my 3100 has been keeping the correct time (to the second) even through reboots. Just to be clear, after you've set the time correctly then there is "no need" to run ntp or ntpdate. By "no need" I mean no need to run it constantly. You may want to run it once a month or something to to correct any minor drifts. FWIW I've been running rc12 for nearly a week now and the time is still accurate to the second (as far as my eye can tell). With the Sharp rom I was losing a couple minutes per reboot!
Now that the hostap modules are available for rc12 (thanks agraef), pdaxrom (thanks sashz, Laze, et al) is a useable alternative to the dreaded Qtopia. Actually Qtopia isn't that bad, it's just that the way it implements the open file dialog is seriously outdated and was driving me insane

Hi,
Excuse me but I haven't all understand about the root limitation of my C860
I just bought this Z under cacko 1.23 and I want to install PdaXrom ...
I want a root partition at the same capacity than the zaurus rom.
Sould I use the fix that I have found in this forum or the pdaXrom installation provide me directly the choice to make an unique big partition ?
Thank's for your help ...
-
If you want to keep the partitions
as they are defined for the sharp rom
then do nothing.
If you want to modify the partitions
then you can use the tools provided by the pdaxrom installer.
if you have modified the partitions and want to go back
to the original partitionning then do a nand restore with an original backup
-
Thank's PGAS ! It's what I have understand :-) So I thin the best way is to make a unique partition for pdaxrom ...
So I must find the original NAND for the C860 because mine is endomaged and I don't want to make a nand backup of an endomaged NAND ...
-

Can someone clarify the status of PyQt on RC12?
It's not in the default feed, although the qt (non-embedded) libraries seem to be there. And pygtk is there.
A search on this forum reveals a version on zaurus.spy.org, in http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/cacko/x11/feed/ (http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/cacko/x11/feed/), but this was built against python 2.3 and RC12 uses python 2.4. I actually extracted the version above and moved the libraries from /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages to 2.4 by hand, and doing this works for some sample pyqt programs in the PyQt samples (analog clock etc) but e.g. fundamental stuff like widgets.py crashes, so I'm assuming there is some basic incompatibility between SIP in 2.3 and 2.4.
There's Mickey's very complete builds at vanille.de, but these seem to all be based on Qt/Embedded instead of Qt/X11 and this is obviously the whole point of pdaxrom.
I could take the trouble to build it myself I guess, but I'd prefer not to if someone has already gone about it, or has plans to in the near future. This is the only thing keeping me on Cacko at the moment, and since my test-drive of RC12 has otherwise gone very well, I'd love to be able to switch.

Hi Sashz,
Yesterday I tried for the first time pdaXrom on my SL-6000. Everything went smoothly and I didn't find any special problems. Just a couple of details until understanding the organization of the distro.
I want to let you know that I've been really impressed for your work. You have done a really impressive job, with so many applications and packages, and most specially I want to thank you for it.
To the moment, I've just tested the original Qtopia with Xqt-Debian, and I had everything working perfectly, but, there was this problem of a small chip maintaining Qtopia and the X's from Xqt. Too much sometimes.
As I have a big (6 Gb) microdrive with the Debian used for xqt, I've tried also with your pdaXrom to CHROOT sometimes to the head of Debian and try different applications. And, almost everything, works perfectly. For example, Firefox, that is not on your feed, works much better than before, althought it takes a long time to appear, afterwards runs o.k. The same for Thunderbird. And a lot of applications that I had in Debian, like GV, Xcas, Maxima, and others.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to run one thing of paramount importance for me: JAVA. I can't understand why as before I used the standar jdk-1.1.8 from Blackdown with SwingZ.jar directly from Debian with no one problem. Now if I try an application with graphics, the SL-6000 freezes and I have to reset it.
I have also tried to install Java on your distribution directly, but then I obtain always a "Segmentation Fault" message. And this is only if the application has graphics. If I run some test programs of just calculations on the console, it is o.k.
What do you think? It is almost sure that the libraries for the X's used by Java are too old to run on pdaXrom.
Apart from that, as I said before, pdaXrom is very impressive and I congratulate you for it.
I have found some difficulties in changing from "openbox" to "icewm". In fact, I'm still fihgting with this.
Another point that can be of interest for someone is that the CHROOT doesn't work if I launch the X's with "startx". I have to do it with "xinit". Doing it with "startx", it does not accept to share the display. This must be the famous "-nolisten" that I've seen on your startx.
Sorry for the length of this mail and once more: CONGRATULATIONS!!

For example, Firefox, that is not on your feed, works much better than before, althought it takes a long time to appear, afterwards runs o.k. The same for Thunderbird.
firefox and thunderbird from this:
http://mail.pdaxrom.org/rc12/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/ (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/rc12/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/)
feed should work on your 6000.
I have found some difficulties in changing from "openbox" to "icewm".
install both icewm and icewm-pdaxrom. then do:
mv /home/root/.xinitrc /home/root/.xinitrc.matchbox
ln -s /usr/bin/icewmsession /home/root/.xinitrc
restart x and you should be in icewm.
As for Java and debian, search in these forums you should be able to find solutions to your problem
-
Thanks a lot pgas for your very quick and useful answer. I will do as you say immediatly.
>As for Java and debian, search in these forums you should be able to find solutions to your problem
This point is more doubtfull for me. I haven't read any one message speaking about the TRUE java on pdaXrom, but I will try.
Thanks once more

pgas, is there any way to make the filesystem interface UTF-8 in pdaXrom.
This is my biggest hickup with it and I had to go back to Cacko because it isn't UTF-8.
Why is it important, I have lots of files with Japanese names and folders too. Unfortunately under RC12 the names just show up as gibberish, a bunch of question marks. It has to be something with the file interface directly, i.e. that it only uses the Western character set encoding or something, because the files also show as gibberish in chrooted debian, while the same debian install on a CF disk works fine under Cacko.
Is it possible somehow to modify this?
I've noticed in Cacko on startup it says "filesystem interface UTF-8" or something similar.
Since the startup process is similar, I assume you and the Cacko developers - Maslovsky et al. probably share some parts etc. So I assume this is doable.
Am I wrong and will I never see the Japanese-named files under pdaXrom?
Thanks for help if any...
-
sorry, I don' t really know about this....
there is an iocharset for mount perhaps you can add iorchaset=utf8 in the option in /etc/fstab,
like /dev/mmcd/disc0/part1 /mnt/card auto noauto,owner,iocharset=utf8 0 0
for the sd card (i tried, it won't destroy your card)
What applications is able to see the utf-8 filenames under debian?
-
I would also be a big fan of unicode encoding for files/folders. (japanese).
Also, did the right-click ever get fixed from rc11?? (SL-6000)
I went back to rc10 b/c i need the right click. I would like to update to rc12 but i need to know for sure that right-click is going to work...
thanks
-
looks like you guys did!!!! =D
I still had to goto Input setup switch the mouse to "hold for right click", exit, restart x, then change it back to "fn+tap" to get it to work
i can't believe how fast rc12 is!!!
i'm very impressed with the new rom. very happy
many many thanks out to everyone who helps to make this rom so good

OK, tried this line, didn't destroy the card But no difference.
The Japanese filenames show as question marks.
I basically use firefox and kate under debian to open Japanese-name files in Japanese-name directories.
This works under Cacko, but here under pdaXrom it just shows questionmarks. You can change to the directory, but I've many and since you only see questionmarks there's no way to tell which one...
Surely this must be easy to remedy

can this just be a font problem?
The chrooted debian use the fonts available to the X/qt server. (not the one in debian, unless you tell x/qt to do so)
The chrooted debian in pdaxrom uses the font available to the pdaxrom server.
I don't know if there are japanese font available by default...

It isn't a Japanese font problem for sure since I installed Japanese locale under pdaXrom and the fonts.
They work because all the pdaXrom menus are in Japanese etc, I can write Japanese in Kate for instance. Most of all when I run Konsole, the output from the commands is displayed in Japanese in the term, but when I do a ls the filenames are just question marks.
It must be some FS interface or the iocharset, should it really be utf8 in fstab, and not maybe UTF-8 or something like this?

I have two small issues in RC12 running on a C1000 that I was wondering if anyone had a fix for.
1. When you switch video modes from 640x480 to 320x240 and then back the icons next to the clock disappear. I either have to exit and restart X or open the look & feel app and click ok to get them back.
2. Sometimes, when I have an app open and displayed on the screen and I suspend when I power on again the app will disappear. It won't be under the active tasks, but I can still see it with ps.

Just curious to know whether there is a newer RC in the official website, coz I saw "1.1.0 RC12 (Released: 2005-11-28)" right on the first page.

You didn't try clicking that, did you?

There was a post about the need to install the "hostap modules" on
the SL-6000 for kismet to function. I tried to install hostap-driver, and...
Installing hostap-driver...depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix/net/hostap.o
Done.
The answer might be a valuable addition to the FAQ->kismet section,

Xrandr works on my 6k! fullscreen quake! mplayer! Bravo!

Are you able to use mplayer for a whole film on the 6000?
If so, wich package are you using of mplayer?
I've tried and everything begins very well, but after one or two minutes, not always in the same place, suddenly everything hangs.
Have you had the same issue sometime?
Thanks

try to add "-nortc" to the mplayer options

Bingo! once more Pgas. It runs wonderufly now... :-)
About the problem with Suspend in the 6000, there is a bug with the microdrive on /mnt/cf, as you know very well. My idea was to try with a different ROM, but I'm so pleased with other aspects of pdaXrom that I've decided to try to solve the minor problems. And, really, pdaXrom + Debian (your way) is so simple and runs so well, that I will not change it if everything continues as it is.
I've written a short script and changed the instruction for the icon "suspend" as to exec this script. It seems to work o.k., at least in the short time. I will verify this evening and tomorrow I'll have a more clear idea.
The other points that I will be happy to solve is the possibility of having a key doing "Num_Lock". Up to now, the 6000 do not seem to react at this. I've had implemented all the other ascii extended characters that I need without problem, including Caps_Lock. But Num_Lock don't seem to react.
Also, having the wheel on the mouse would be a nice thing. I use it on some Java apps.
About the address for installing a complete Debian, it is not so. The guy only "authomatizes" the launching of Pocketworkstation, but running on Xvnc. Thanks aniway for your information.
Finally, Java is running very well from inside Debian, and a final question: do you know if it is possible to have several workspaces using Matchbox?
Thanks for all, and I will be only too happy to help anyone if needed.

Is there any chance gpe-mini-browser could run on RC12? I tried it out on OZ and it really rocks. It starts quicker then firefox, and seems to render better then dillo. It will at least work with my bank, where dillo won't.
-
I guess that means it can do cookies, which Dillo can't. You can do an awful lot more (such as webmail) if your browser supports cookies.

you mean the default windows manager openbox?
try alt + arrow (up down left right)
Also see the openbox homepage for more info.

try links, it can be started with -g for graphic mode. (or from the menu)
-
AFAIK Dillo can do cookies. Just go to home/zaurus/.dillo and edit the cookkie file (seperate from dillorc) to enable cookies

Oh! Sorry to give out wrong information. Maybe older versions didn't do it, or maybe I'm getting confused because it won't do Javascript (so you can't log into Yahoo mail AFAIK).
