Title: My New C3100 - A Fancy Paperweight?
Post by: BarrySamuels on October 29, 2005, 07:31:26 am
My new SL-C3100 was delivered last Thursday.

One of the primary reasons I got one of these is to view Tiff images from my camera on a CompactFlash card whilst in the field. I'm trying to convert, and resize, Tiff files to Jpeg so that I can then look at them with the already installed software.

I've copied the ImageMagick 'convert' binary from Rob Fisher's site to /usr/local/bin and installed libtiff from Silvio Iaccarino's site but when I run 'convert' it gives a message 'Libtiff not available'.

I've tried everything that I can think of without success and I'm now getting a little desparate. If I can't do this conversion my pretty new Zaurus will be nothing more than a fancy paperweight.

Any ideas anyone - please?

man, it's sad to see that you consider such a pretty and powerful device as just a mere tiff viewer

if you don't want it anymore, then i am sure there are plenty of others that want one who you can give it to as a present

anyway, i use visual q to convert tiff files and i can even view them directly using FileLaunch.

I didn't say that at all.

I've tried VisualQ with just one 12MB Tiff image on the CF card and after selecting the image and clicking open I am taken back to the main window with some menu options now enabled but the window is blank. Should I see something?

File - information tells me the image is 0x0 pixels ???

I can view the image on my laptop without problems.

If you want to post a sample TIF I can try opening on my machine. As I told you before, I was able to open one with VisualQ earlier.

I haven't tried Gimp as I believe that I would need to install X first which I'm not quite ready to do yet. Gimp will open the images on my laptop however.

I'm trying VisualQ.

cough  cough!  My camera TIFF images are 12MB. Perhaps posting one of those wouldn't be terribly popular.

I also set the camera to take JPEGs temporarily and VisualQ did the same with those. It apparently opens the image but displays nothing.    The PhotoStorage app included on the Zaurus will display the JPEGs that VisualQ won't.

Maybe you have too many applications open (via autoload) and as a result not enough memory for your big file?

Try to disable autoload and if that still does not help try to set up a swapfile...

Maybe having more memory will help...

I've disable most of the apps autoloading except possibly one.

I've just tried displaying a JPEG of 876956 bytes and VisualQ won't display that either.

Why not? Of course I don't mean as an inline image, but as a zip file or something.

The plot thickens.

I've tried again today to view TIFF images with VisualQ and it now displays them.

But if I save one of the TIFF images as a JPEG using VisualQ and then use VisualQ to display the saved JPEG it won't display it but the PhotoStorage app will display it.

It may, as GadgetGuy suggested, be due to lack of memory so my next step is to try setting up a swap file and try again.

Using bzip2 to zip one of the images still leaves a filesize of 6MB.
