I am using the new version on my C1000...   While everything else seems to work great, I have trouble playing media files. MP3s will not play.  I have tried to install the ROM twice, and still can't make it work.  I have tried from SD and CF cards.   Does anyone have any idea?  Do I need to install a lib?

C1000 - First impressions, great work - all the stuff/toys/tweaks I had installed on the sharp rom to make it usable, overclocking works prefectly - FZero on snes9x - full speed

Speaking of snes9x, it requires libsdl which isnt in the feed.

The description for frodo is the feed still says 'froso'

Wifi card works, connection is as intermitant as usual, so no better or worse than the sharp rom.

Haven't tried media files yet.

Installed nano & ncurses (not from feed) and it fails to start :/

Will try media files this evening and post my results

with the c3k wouldnt just be easier to boot off the flash with initrd, set up the hard drive then piviot root to the hard drive and start the normal boot sequence, just use the flash like a linux bootloader. thats what openzaurus seems to be doing at the moment and it works well

one advantage in this aproch is you can use it to scan all harddrvies/partions and present a menu of which one to boot from, eg CF SD on board flash or micrdrive and would help in unifying the work on the c3k c3100 and c1k by only having to fiddle with the initrd to get it working on the other models

just my 2 cents, dont suppose you could get the 1.22 cacko for the c3k up in the mean time, just when i need it it disapears (bad reflash) and i have no local backup

Well, I tried it and there is really lot of very good stuff, like the USB drivers for the lynksys USB Ethernet Dongle (aixxxx module), etc etc.. but kphone with sipgate no more works?.

If i setup kphone to use the Stun server => no registration, if i remove the stun server, registration ok, test on 10000 number ok, but "a error occured" if i try to make a call to a fixed line...

so i want to come back to the sharp rom, but, if i restore my NAND backup there is an error so here my question,

How to restore a NAND sharprom backup after the cacko rom 1.23 install (with the 32M format stuff..)

I tried to reformat 64Mo for the rom (using the cacko install) and relaunch the nand backup, but same error ?? thanks

UPDATE : Kphone is working, just a config error from me. still not able to restore the sharprom BTW.

I used the D+M insert battery, the restore rom menu, then a hard reset (factory restore), then you should be ok. I currently am using tetsu's kernel, but gonna use Cacko Lite soon so I can have some more control over what junk is installed.

Sorry for the late posting, I'd hoped to have this ready when Cacko 1.23 went live, but I've been down with the flu.

Anyway here are the japanese support ipks to add back Japanese input methods to the C1000 and C3100. For some reason the CRIM from the C3100 doesn't work on the C1K - it causes an endless restart of qtopia - so I've made 2 ipks.

I'll hopefully finish the rest of the Japanese application support over the weekend and get it to maslovsky to add to the Cacko feed.

I've seperated the fonts from the old japanese-support ipk into a seperate ipk as they were only used by the sldict app (which doesn't come with the C3x00 zaurus)

NOTE: I don't have a C3100, so I haven't tested this ipk

Please let me know if you have any problems with these ipks

Not what I meant

With version 1.22 there was a different installation file which specifically didn't hardware remap the kanji key etc to ctrl and alt.

I use QPOBox and need to use the Kanji key for starting it. But no matter what I do I can't remap the remapped Alt in 1.23 back to F21.

Solution? Should I install the real KeyHelper? Or is there gonna be a 1.23ja version too?

I got a segmentation fault at the very end of the ipkg installation, but ignored it and TextMaker has been running fine after a reboot. It is important to install the Hi-Res update ipkg (available at the TextMaker web site) or TextMaker may be erratic or hang, at least on a C1000.

All in all, I've found 1.23 highly reliable and polished, and with Meanie's work there are now very powerful addons that install easily, well configured. Hats off to Maslovsky!

I have just installed the new ROM on my C860 and like it very much. Seems to run a little bit faster then 1.22.
Finally I created a NAND-Image and restored the 1.22-version to backup some additional data. When now trying to restore the NAND-image of 1.23, I always get Restore ...failed format error. I think the problem is the new 32MB root partition. I tried bams suggestion and did a factory restore in the service menu, but same error. So what's the exact procedure for a working NAND-restore?

Hi,

made yesterday the switch to 1.23 on my c1000.

Great!  Thanks alot Anton.

One point i can・t get to run as expected is iptables.
Neither by hand myself nor with the simple snowfence.
Generally it works, but missing is the iptables state module.
By design?

Code: [Select]
# iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables v1.2.11: Couldn't load match `state':/usr/lib/iptables/libipt_state.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Try `iptables -h' or 'iptables --help' for more information.
These modules can be found:
Code: [Select]
# ls -al /usr/lib/iptables/
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root            0 Nov  4 13:41 .
drwxr-xr-x    8 root     root            0 Nov  4 13:41 ..
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           36 Nov  4 13:41 libipt_DNAT.so -> /usr/lib.rom/iptables/libipt_DNAT.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           42 Nov  4 13:41 libipt_MASQUERADE.so -> /usr/lib.rom/iptables/libipt_MASQUERADE.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           40 Nov  4 13:41 libipt_REDIRECT.so -> /usr/lib.rom/iptables/libipt_REDIRECT.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           40 Nov  4 13:41 libipt_standard.so -> /usr/lib.rom/iptables/libipt_standard.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           35 Nov  4 13:41 libipt_tcp.so -> /usr/lib.rom/iptables/libipt_tcp.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           35 Nov  4 13:41 libipt_udp.so -> /usr/lib.rom/iptables/libipt_udp.so

I checked the different iptables ipks from the feed, nothing there neiher.

Could i compile the missing module myself?  If so -- sorry -- how?

Like preinstalled Opera very much.  On original i had instelled 7.55 now we have 7.25.  Does anybody know which difference exists between these two?

I'm a first time user of Cacko rom (Cacko 1.23 full) - I installed it a couple of days ago on my C1000 which is also my first Z.
Below are my first impressions - at length.

The installation itself worked without a hitch (32M root, clean user are etc) and I kept no trace of the previous rom (trisoft/sharp) or apps on the SD card.  The 1G SD card (SanDisk) is permanently kept in the machine.

For the apps I used the mirror feed from http://web.mol.ru/~zaurus/feed/ (http://web.mol.ru/~zaurus/feed/).

I couldn't connect w the WiFi card (Pretec CompactWLAN 802.11b). The card took a very long time to initialize but only sometimes became usable; not very often. This card works almost flawlessly w the sharp rom: I use it w Kismet, Opera etc.
That's why I made a feed directory on the SD card & put all I wanted there.

The apps install fine (GUI or cmd line). I used only apps from this feed: opie reader, kismet, kismet-qt, wellenreiter etc. They worked ok.  I installed only a few apps not mentioned here on the SD card - most of them & all libs in the main memory.

Wellenreiter could use the card every time without problems but it would only start from the cmd line - never from the icon. If left on for a long time it would run out of available memory thus needing a reboot. I put the file logs/capture on a usb hdd w powered hub - no problems. The same if no capture was enabled. This may be a wellenreiter specific problem - don't give up reading just yet.

Kismet qt & terminal versions both seemed to run ok as usual.

Now - there was a real problem when I tried to use the machine without the external power, only on battery. I must point out that it wasn't over/underclocked & the battery was always over 75% (75 to 100) charged according to the battery applet.
Backlight at minimum on battery, suspend after 30 min. There was no active screensaver and no network card inserted.

When I removed the external power the screen went blank for a second and come back for two-three seconds only to go blank again by itself sometimes or the first time I would touch a key or the screen. This was repeatable with only opie reader running.
Different things happened after this depending on my actions  :P
- If I plugged the power back in it would resume work "normally" without touching the power button.
- If I pressed the power button briefly it would sometimes flick on for a second or not then go blank again. It would not start anymore from the power button - external power or not. Reboot needed.

Reboot w external power would be ok.
Without it would go blank at the first fullscreen splash or immediately after that when showing the clock. Plug in the power and it would repeat the above.

The only app kept in memory was opie reader. The battery cover was closed & the switch properly set. I checked repeatedly.
I didn't see anybody having this problem yet and I wonder if there is anything one would care to suggest.

As another experiment I restored a full NAND backup made before Cacko install and I'm waiting to see if the problem would appear w the previous sharp rom. I also restored my SD card contents w apps & whatnot. It's been already an hour and everything worked fine through a few suspend resume cycles. I'll play for a while w the network card and see if it causes any problems.

Leaving aside this problem it looks like a very thorough job, thanks Anton.

On another subject: are the Cacko sources available from somewhere w or without  instructions for setting up a development environment?

    TIA,
        Fry

hallo fry,

the problem with NAND-backup doesn't occur with backups, you made before cacko 1.23-install, but with NAND-restore AFTER installing the new rom. After experiencing that problem, I could restore my old NAND-backup from version 1.22 without problems. But now I'm back to the old version because my backup from 1.23 will not restore

 Hi wowo123,

I didn't make any NAND backups while v1.23 was installed so I can't tell if they would restore or not.

With the restored sharp NAND everything works as before - no problems w suspend/restore even if I use the network CF (any mode). Didn't need to reboot since the restore.

One other thing I forgot to mention for v1.23:
The Settings->Netwok->Current tab would only work for less than a second when connected.  It would not refresh any dynamic info; only some of the static text.

That's a problem I have also encountered - when you use the lowest brightness setting, sometimes the backlight gets switched off completely. Just use Fn+4 (increase brightness) and you should see something again. Took me a while to figure that out.

When I removed the external power the screen went blank for a second and come back for two-three seconds only to go blank again by itself sometimes or the first time I would touch a key or the screen. This was repeatable with only opie reader running.
Different things happened after this depending on my actions
- If I plugged the power back in it would resume work "normally" without touching the power button.
- If I pressed the power button briefly it would sometimes flick on for a second or not then go blank again. It would not start anymore from the power button - external power or not. Reboot needed.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102492\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
That's a problem I have also encountered - when you use the lowest brightness setting, sometimes the backlight gets switched off completely. Just use Fn+4 (increase brightness) and you should see something again. Took me a while to figure that out.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102581\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yes, that's a well-documented and long-standing problem with Cacko ROM.  I remember it really had me freaked out the first time i encountered it.  Once you're aware of it, it's just a nuisance.

Regarding the sdl lib... does the best version depend on our Zaurus model?  I seem to recall that the new clamshells have a different graphics chip, so i assume that means a different optimized library.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102274\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Did you try to restore root partition size to the default value?

What chipset does your Linksys WCF54G card use? If it's II.5 - it's NOT supported, the driver only with I and II revisions.

On another subject: are the Cacko sources available from somewhere w or without  instructions for setting up a development environment?

Actualy there is no such thing as "Cacko ROM sources". Sharp applications are used as is and they don't come with the source code. Third-party applications are typicaly GPL or freeware and their sources can be found elsewhere. Application that I wrote myself and also GPL and if you need particular sources for any application - just let me know - I sometimes may just forget to upload them..

You can use standard Sharp SDK to build applications for Cacko ROM (as well as for any Sharp-based ROM)

Yes. I also tried a completely new 1.23-ROM install  to overwrite it with the restore of the last NAND-backup. Always the same error.  As I have stored two different versions of 1.23-Nand-backups with the same behaviour there cannot be a temporary error with the backup-file. But I can (fortunately!) always restore an old version 1.22 NAND-backup file.
Can you confirm, that the NAND-restore worked properly for you after switching to the new rom?

Thanks Anton,
but sorry thats only part of the picture, i posted wrong.

What i did first, before posting:
try iptables - no state
install iptables-extra - still no state, different msg (see below)
thought maybe some of the buildin iptables is wrong, so installed some of the other (lite)iptables (don#t remember which it was) ipk from the feed - trial and error.  Was error, so do a restore of the system.

After the restore i forgot to install iptables-extra again.
I posted the wrong error first.

Now this is what happens when i try the state-rule after having iptables-extra installed
Code: [Select]
iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.
I'm new to iptables, until now i use most times fw routers.
I thought give my debian sarge system a try, it has iptables 1.2.11 too.

On Debian
Code: [Select]
iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPTworks immediately and with lsmod i find ip_conntrack and ipt_state as addtional modules loaded.  They exist both for the 2.6.12 as the 2.4.27 kernels on the debian system, but on the ZAURUS i can't find any file of that name and they are neither loaded by the iptables command nor can i modprobe/insmod/... them.

So there is still something missing ....

TIA George

- I did a little testing with iptables and had no troubles, but I admit it was only a little.  If'n I'm allowed to test again after this debacle I'll be more diligent here.  (little boy pout)
- First thing I ran into was the "minimum backlight" bug.  It's annoying, truth tell, because I want to run on mimimum as well, but there are so many nice things about Cacko that I'll take next-to-minimum brightness without any problem at all.  (wide grin)
- I did a lot of testing with WiFi and BT.  After learning how to use the Network application to configure BT correctly, I never had the slightest problem connecting with either one using Cacko.  The Sharp ROM never used my Symbol card correctly, not even once, and BT with the Sharp ROM was an exercise in frustration on the best of days.
- Wellenreiter was a flakey beast with Cacko, but it worked the majority of the time, and I never used it often enough to experience the issue given.  I'd be more inclined to think it's that application than Cacko, but I never used it under Sharp because it wouldn't use my WiFi card at all.
- Kismet's GUI never worked right in testing, but I considered that a configuration issue and not an incompatibility; for instance, the first thing I do after installing Cacko is to give root a password, then remove ALL from the sudoers file for user 'zaurus', and the GUI might not like that.  Kismet itself was a pain to configure, but once set up it ran on the command line without the slightest glitch.  Since I can't run BT & GPS at the same time, anyway, I prefer Kismet's information to Wellenreiter's, anyway.  (shrug)
- I flashed this thing numerous times and had zero difficulty with installation.  Never tried a NAND restore, though I have a handful of them lying around.  (grin)
- I used libSDL_1.2.6-zports-5_arm.ipk for all testing and had no troubles with a variety of games.  Don't know if that's the best version, but it worked reliably, and that's something.  (snicker)

- I did have a problem, though.  I tried out "Lite" last night, because I don't want NetFront or the default Sharp Apps, but I couldn't get Opera, iptables, or Kino to work.  It's possible I was using the main feed by accident ... but I gave up and reflashed to "Full" because that stuff essentially works "out of the box", along with who knows what else that I'm used to having around now 'cause I always tested the full version.  (snicker)

- Now, however, I have another "problem".  The "ROM" part of Cacko is under /usr, which is a cramfs so I can't write there.  I want to remove NetFront, all the Sharp Apps, Migration, and whatever else strikes my fancy.  What's the best way to go about that?  I have zero familiarity with cramfs, except that it's a compressed file system.  I thought jiffs2 was already compressed?  I can only imagine cramfs is higher compression, which is how Anton gets so much in a paltry 32MB.  But I still want to re-organize it ... and I'd rather fiddle with the cramfs than the hassle of re-installing and re-configuring everything again.  That's getting a touch old of late.  (cheshire grin)
- My biggest fear is it's not possible.  I'm happy to boot without the GUI to do it, but if it's loading files from there just to boot up, I'm not going to be able to replace that cramfs.  Then I have no recourse but to try "Lite" again.  That wouldn't be the most desirable scenario.

- Thanks for your time...

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102214\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102236\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Actualy I forgot about those keymappings  I think I'll have to buiod a separate Japanese kernel without remapped keys.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102237\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Are you planning to build the Japanese kernel, or is this task not current?

iptables modules package maybe?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102870\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi Anton,

would be great if it were.

The only iptables-modules  i can find are:
iptables-modules-2.4.20_1.23-lite-1_arm.ipk (and ...2.4.18_...)
both are "lite" so i assume they are for the lite kernel.
Anyhow i took it from the cacko.biz/cacko/feed/ manually, and browsed thru the ipk archive with mc. I can locate within there only the exactly same kernel modules as are already in the
/lib/modules.rom/2.4.20/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/

In
/lib/modules/..../netfilter/ on the zaurus i find same named links to the files in the above dir.
E.g. ipt_REJECT.o links to
/lib/modules.rom/2.4.20/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_REJECT.o

Would i install the lite ipk these links would be replaced by the files from the ipk.  Still no ip_conntrack.o and no ipt_state.o as the ipk doesn't have them.
Would i them deinstall this ipk again, the files will be removed but the links won't be restored,
Thats what happened when i installed one lite ipk in my first trial, see my previous post.
So i will not try the lite iptables-modules.  Is there some other ipk where the missing modules could be found?

regards,
George

I haven't installed any overclocking applet and like Glenbo, I believe the menu looked like the menu in 1.22 and then it changed to what you see now.

Here is a list of the packages I installed after flashing 1.23:

DocReader,  JavaChess,  Shopper,  amortize,  backgammon,  bounce,  iceblox,  inkwp,  iqnotes,  iqnotes-pics,  jeode,  justreader,  ko/pi, ka/pi, kmicrokdelibs, korganizer-alarm, mahjongg, mooview, opie-reader, petitepeinture,  pimTABicon, portabase,  qpaint,  qpdf2,  qpe-camera,  qpealarmclock,  qpsword,  various qpsword modules,  spades, tkcvideo,  treeexplorer,  unifont,  visiscript,  zsolitaire

I'll run backup, reflash and restore tonight and see if that fixes the menu issue.  I just hate not knowing what may be causing this.

I have a small bug, I installed 1.23 lite on 3100 and everything was okay, I formated and installed 1.23 full instead, everything went very well, then I went to the package manager and logged to the cacko feed and putted plenty of packages (around 20 ipk or so) among those ipk are the japanese support ipk, now when I reboot the machine just keep initializing, it doesn't end his initialation. it shows the please wait... starting linux and Qtopia blue screen, then switch to black, wait 5,4,3,2,1 then back to the blue again, then again wait 5,4,3,2,1 then back to the blue one, it never ends...

anyway, I will format again and reinstall again and try installing less packages at once

During the countdown hit the "/" key and enter "a" at the prompt, that will take you to the console, then remove the japanese-support ipk.

it's probably the CRIM form the new C3100 rom, I couldn't get it to work with my C1000, try the C1k version of the japanese-support-ipk and let me know if that works for you. If so I'll redo the ipks and get rid of the 3100 version.

If anyone has got the 3100 version of the japanese-support to work please let me know

me it works very well with the original japanese-support_1.0-3_arm.ipk
I haven't tried twice the 3100 version, but yes it was the 3100 version who gived me the error

Did you format user partition? Did you restore contents of /home/zaurus/Settings direcory from your Rom 1.22 backup?

In my case, I did restore some of the Settings directory files from the 1.22 version.  Perhaps I overwrote one that messed up the overclocking applet?

Thats what happened when i installed one lite ipk in my first trial, see my previous post.
So i will not try the lite iptables-modules.  Is there some other ipk where the missing modules could be found?

regards,
George

I'll check tomorrow ifsome of the modules are still missing from the package.

Hello Anton,

i had found an older version of the iptables-extra  (Jan 2005) from the cacko feed which i had dled  in September.  looking into it shows
a) has been made for 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix kernel
b) contains a tree /lib/modules/..../ipv4/netfilter/ with the ip_conntrack.o and ip_state.o
c) contains a tree /usr/lib/iptables/

comparing this with the current ipk shows the whole tree b) is not there, only /usr/lib/iptables/

perhaps something in packaging went wrong?

Thanks
George

Hi Anton,

no, there is not any iptables modules ipk which contains the missing conntrack* and state kernel modules.
See my previous msg about the iptables-modules (lite) ipk on the cacko feed. I have analyzed them all.
My msg about the iptables-extra diff between old and current version was a hint that in the past the missing kernel modules could be found in the extra ipk but nowdays aren't there anymore:

as posted before,
/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/
contains 1:1 links to every file in /lib/modules.rom/...

The cackofeed
iptables-modules-2.4.20_1.23-lite-1_arm.1.ipk
contains exactly the same modules as the modules.rom above, no wonder, it is probably the missing modules of the lite kernel to have the same funtionality an the full kernel.

here again for the 2.4.18 kernel we find the conntrack* state and nat kernel modules which are not available for the 2.4.20 kernel.

I have marked in the first listing by !!! those modules which are missing now for 2.4.20, as far as i could  spot them.
I don't know where to further look for them.
Marked with *** are modules which were there only for 2.2 kernel firewall compatibility, i think they are really not needed anymore

Sorry for thze long post.  I think we need all details now otherwise we enter a loop here.

In my case, I did restore some of the Settings directory files from the 1.22 version.  Perhaps I overwrote one that messed up the overclocking applet?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=103311\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yes, you did.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=103463\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks, Maslovsky.  I figured out that I had accidentally overwrote freqchange.conf in the Settings directory.  Once I restored it with the original 1.23 version of the file, all was fine.

1.23 is a great rom.  Thanks for the hard work!

Hi,

I installed the 1.23-lite version, but have a small problem with the docked applications.

Firstly, I did a backup of my 1.22-lite via the Qtopia GUI. Then I removed Hotfix-A and did another backup. Then installed 1.23-lite and finally restored from the 2nd backup (without the old Hotfix).

However, my problem is similar to the problem reported by a few people back in 1.21 (IIRC), in that the docked applications stack on top of each other. Also, occasionally when I enable / disable one Qtopia crashes.

Just in case it's a conf file problem, I'm about to re-flash 1.23-lite and then just extract the PIM data & WiFi settings from my backup file (as that's all I really need) and re-install the applications.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Gav.

Well to answer my own question ... the docked applications are ok with a fresh install! I'm just getting the gadget back to it's former fully loaded glory

Kernel modules  are in separate package iptables-modules
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=103464\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi Anton,

i continued looking for the needed kernel modules and so i checked at the tetsu webpage where you got your kernel patches from.

i looked into the v18a kernel modules ipk.

There are neither any conntrack*, nat, state netfilter kernel modules, so probably the kernel was compiled with similar config.

I assume now the needed modules are nowhere available.
Next step is then self compile.

On your webpage i dind't find a doc how to compile kernel modules myself.
Could you give me a hint?

TIA
George

gsgmx, you are right - the modules you mentioned were missing from the 2.4.20 kernel package!  I've built them and updated the package in the feed. Please, download it again and reinstall.

Hi Anton,

yes fine, i found the missing modules in

iptables-modules-2.4.20_1.23-lite-2_arm.ipk

which i installed now. Made before, to be safe, a gtar backup of the ..../netfilter folder as its contents were to be overwritten by the install and would not be restored by a later deinstall.

Anyhow the missing modules are now there!  It works!  Thanks alot!

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102214\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102236\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Actualy I forgot about those keymappings  I think I'll have to buiod a separate Japanese kernel without remapped keys.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102237\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

That seperate Japanese kernel for C760 would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to install 1.23 on my Sister-in-law's C760 (she's visiting from Tokyo). I can't quite get the japanese software (dictionary, etc.) working on 1.23 without the J kernel. Let me know if you want me to test or anything.

Hi Anton,

thanks again.  It works, but now looks like i installed not the right way by using this ipk.
I could not find anything else with the missing modules.  And i have no idea what else could / should be installed.

New cacko 1.23 package thru reflash like first 1.23 install?
new kernel (how?, where to dl from?)?
another ipk? The one i used was the only one with a current modified date.

Sorry - too stupid but i don't know the right / optimal way.

Anton,

no real problem.

I understood your msg as if i could also install a new full 2.4.20 kernel package with integrated netfilter modules.
I wanted to tell you that a) i'm not sure whether there is really a new kernel or a kernel extension packages for 1.23 full, as i was unable to locate something like that.
So i wonder whether the ipk i installed was the optimal way to upgrade my 1.23 full.

Can you tell me which options i have or is there just the one i have choosen.

All these ipk feeds are difficult for me to handle.  The ipks in the Add/Remove Programs tool on the Z don't show package dates.
So there is no "normal" way to find out which packages are new / should be replaced.
Brian published a while ago a script to download all (new) ipks from a feed to a system and i'm using that one to download and check for new ipks. That way i found the new modules ipk but nothing else ....

Regards
George

I have been using the original sharp ROM and decided to try Cacko 1.23 it's all loaded up and looking very nice on my C1000 probleem is it doesn't recognise my wifi cards: SanDisk Connect Plus and Planex GW-CF11H.  The sharp ROM never saw the SanDisk but the Planex worked no problem.  I will willing donate money to this project if someone can get me running all I want is: Kismet, Kphone and at least one of the cards working and possibly Gaim.

If it is not possible perhaps I should use another ROM?

Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,
I think you need to calm down, it's really just a matter of checking that the PCMCIA subsystem recognises the cards when they're plugged in.

Please run the following commands and tell us what the output is:
cardctl ident
cardctl status

what we're looking for is the manufacturer information.

Try to add the following to the /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf

card "PLANEX GW-CF11H Wireless CF Card"
version "PLANEX COMMUNICATIONS INC.", "PLANEX GW-CF11H Wireless CF Card",""
bind "hostap_cs"

Then reboot your Zaurus and reinsert the card

how can you make the symbol wifi card directly supported in cacko?
i am using c3000 and sharp rom 1.11 and 18a kernal(the cacko 3kbeta have a nasty bug...)
i want to try kismet and Wellenreiter
but the card is recognized as a lan card instead of wifi card
how can i config it to be a wifi card?

for the kismet...i found it quite difficult to setup even for a normal card....
i guess it won't work..because wellenreiter dont work...
i may try it later when i have time

I have made a couple of minor changes to the following, it is now correct.  This probably sounds stupid but how do I edit the config file?  I can not open it with HancomWord, is there a console prog I use?

PLANEX

OK I was being a plonker I have gone back to my old way of editing the config files: copy the config to an SD card and then edit it on my Laptop using MS Word then copy back again.

I have made the changes you suggest and now when I plug the Planex GW-CF11H it recognises it as follows:

DemarcTech Relia-Wave 180mW 802.11b WLAN Card

It will not connect in the network area as a wireless card or as a WLAN card which is what it thinks it is - what next I feel like we are making progress.  Also what about the SanDisk?

Many Thanks Again for your time - will definately make a donation when it's working

Anton,

Since we are talking here about the compatibilities of Cacko 1.23, I would like to know if the Ambicom BT card (BT2000-CF: new model, white label) is supported under the new kernel. I remember reading somewhere in this forum something about the support for the new card, but I can not find it. I am waiting for my new C3100 that should arrive today or tomorrow and hoping this card that I had "getting dust" on the shelf might work.

Thank you in advance for any input.

Regards from the Tropics

I've tried the new configuration and I got the same result.  I thought I would try deleting the entry completely and rebooting to see if I got not recognised and I got the same result even though the card wasn't mentioned.

I thought what the hell and reinstalled the ROM, plugged in the card and hey presto it wasn't recognised, I tried updating the config file with both configs and this time nothing it just wasn't recognised, I am at a loss, I don't think I have done anything differently?  Are there any libs I should install?  The config files are definately updating with word as I checked the results.  Please help I am desparate as I can only get online by plugging into the LAN with my Buffalo card.  If you cann't solve the problem which card should I buy that will work in CACKO with kismet, Kphone, and Gaim?

Hello,
I flashed my C760 with Cacko 1.23-lite.

1. minor problem:
magnified applications have too big OK and Cancel buttons in titlebar.

2. big problem:
the well known problem: using a billionton CFGPS card is not like plug'n play ;-)
starting gpsd or "cat /dev/ttyS3" after "stty 4800 < /dev/ttyS3" freezes my zaurus.

I tried every hint I found on this and other forums, except changing serial_cs.o.

But serial_cs is in the ROM part and not changeable, from my newbee point of view.
(I tried as su with chown and chmod without success.)
But on the other hand I don't know the right serial_cs version, because the suggested version is not available. (This might be problem 3.)

everything worked fine on the old sharp rom.

Does anyone has any further ideas?

Thanks

Hi,

Today I was in the mood of flashing the cacko rom onto my zaurus slc3100. Looks nice but there is the following quite annoying problem:

Does somebody experience a similar problem: I use the German keyboard layout (fn+a -> ä ...). When I run qkonsole, the characters are displayed fine but when I run vim (6.3) or emacs, the characters are garbled. Apparantly, a blank is appended to äöü characters. ß (fn+s) appears as #[1m~_ (the # is a non-printable character here.

Does somebody know how to avoid this? Could this problem be related to qkonsole (a patch to qkonsole)?

Interestingly vim and emacs are both affected by this. Only on the bash command line, the characters appear to be correct.

Cheers,
Thomas.

At first, its a great rom, I use it on my C1000.

I'm not shure, if my question is right here, but ...

I'm using fbvncserver-C3000_0.9.4-0.2_arm.ipk an run into some problems:

After solving some problems with missed symlinks, starting the server and making a connection with a vnc viewer to my C1000, every application crash with the following error:

"error while loading shared libraries: /home/QtPalmtop/lib/lobqpe.so.1: undefined symbol, "  - but the link is still there.

and if it has crashed, and tried to restart, I get a
" segmentation fault"

This Problems didn't apear while using the original sharp rom.

Perhaps someone has an idea in solving this little problem.

Unfortunately, it is not. Apparently I have one of the "no compat" ones. Could you tell me if any of this cards is supported by 1.23 and if there are versioning issues (such as the Ambicom's BT2000-CF) that you are aware of?. I think the easiest fix is just to buy one that is already supported:

Are there any other issues, strenghts, need for tweaking to set up, etc?

Thank you in advance for your input.

I would like to know if the Ambicom BT card (BT2000-CF: new model, white label) is supported under the new kernel

If the "white" label card is the same as "blue" label one, then yes, it's supported.

All of these cards are supported OOTB by Cacko ROM. Socket doesn't stick out of CF slot. There are no other noticable differences between the cards. Most modern bluetooth cards are based on CSR chipset and are almost the same...

Installed Cacko on my recently acquired 3100 so far works great as one would expect.

THANKS, Maslovsky!

Question: Does Cacks have the latest Tetsu V18b kernel in it?

If not, should I install it plus all those patches?

Thanks for any input!

Yes, and much more than that. A lot of drivers have been back ported from the latest 2.4.32 kernel.

Anton,

I got the Socket rev. 2.5 CF card, and also I got a Siemens Speedstream Ethernet USB dongle. I have a couple of questions:

1.  How do I install the connection thru GPRS? The card is properly recognized, once I choose to add a BT PPP connection, I press search for the device, and an error message that can not find a DUN profile device or something like that appears. Could I get pointed to the detail instructions as to how to pair the card with my phone under Cacko 1.23 for the SLC3100 and how to configure and establish the connection?

2. Also, when I plug the USB ethernet dongle, it starts to blink (the dongle), but I dont know how to establish a connection. I tried the LAN connection, but it keeps asking for the device or the connection. I guess I am missing something. If possible, I would like also to be pointed to detailed (newbie) instructions as to how to set up the dongle Ehternet connection.

Thanks in advance for any help you may give me.

Regards from the Tropics,

Otto

Soryr, I can't. Pairing with a phone requries enabling some settings specific to the particular phone. Search the forums, you may find something for your ohone.

Lets not hijack the thread but Thc is working on porting PdaXrom to the C3000. He is getting close. Check  here (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16429&hl=)

I am not sure about cacko for the C3000. I have attempted to contact iamasmith to no avail. He does not respond. Topic about this subject seem to just get passed by as well. Hopefully soon we will see Cacko 1.23 for C3000. It is a very slick rom and Maslovsky has done a great job.

Hi -

Is Package Manager install working okay under 1.23?  I just upgraded to 1.23, and when I try to install from a feed all I get is "ipkg says something went wrong. sorry"

I tried from the default feed and also http://web.mol.ru/~zaurus/feed/ (http://web.mol.ru/~zaurus/feed/)

So i am downloading the ipkgs via netfront and installing manually (can get to the ipkg/feed fine via netfront), which also gives me the "ipkg says something went wrong. sorry" when i try and install.

Perhaps I am overlooking something obvious, or...?

TIA

Hi all,

I finally managed to get a Wifi card working with WPA. All I had to do the following:

1) configure the conf files according to FAQ
2) update the firmware of the card

The later was successful, although I do not really know what I actually did (.hex files and such things;-)...

My problem now is a pretty stupid one:

1) I click onto the connect symbol.
2) The connect symbol becomes red and says that it is connected.
3) Some seconds later a window pops up to tell me, that "No connection detected," and that I should "Check your TCP/IP settings."

The funny thing is, that between 2) and 3) the network is up and running. You can ping hosts in the Intra- and Internet (be it by IP or hostname), you can even browse the web. So apparently everything is running. But then the Zaurus doesn't know it?!

Pleeeeeeease help! I am to stupid to solve this last piece...

Btw.:
I have the same problem, when I am using a CF Fast Ethernet card. The TCP/IP settings are manual, with gateway and DNS pointing to my router 192.168.1.1

DRDR.

DHCP is not activated. The manually assigned IP adress works just fine. Actually everything works just fine, until I confirm the "no connection detected" box, which unfortunately doesn't like to give up its focus...

Could the virtual network interface wlan0, wifi0 be part of the problem? E.g. Qtopia is waiting for the wrong interface to come up?

what happens if you start the connection on the command line.

firstly, find out which one it is
    more/etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.opts

the start the scheme:
    cardctl scheme qpewlanX
    cardctl reset

and see what gets printed to the command line; perhaps also use a script like this:

#!/bin/sh
while( 1 ) ; do
    sleep 1
    ifconfig -a
    iwconfig
done

and redirect to a file to watch its output

Thank you very much for you input!
When I start the connection from the command line I get a connection in no time and it is stable. Which means I can access Intra- and Internet from all appliations which do not rely on the Qtopia network detection feature (that means: Mail does not work, but Picsel Browser does, ... and - most important - online software installation) works. For Qtopia the network still seams to be down.

I installed Cacko 1.23 on my c3100.  I just got it and originally had the Sharp Zaurus Japanese default ROM on it. Very smooth installation!!

Question.  I would like to know why there is the need for 3 partitions of hdd (the hard drive I am assuming)?

I have
/hdd1, ext file system and read-only access.
/hdd2, ext file system and read-write access.
/hdd3, vfat file system and read-write access.

Since I am assuming this is the hard-drive, can I just blow away all partitions of the hard drive and re-format to one big partition using ext file system?  What would be an advantage for this this device using vfat?

Thanks for your (future) help and insight!!

that can be done with some hacking. the default sharp rom would not finish booting if any of the partitions were missing. i hacked rc.rofilesys to not check for those partitions and divided my microdrive into three partitions, swap, ext3 for installing stuff and fat for data

So, as the current setup, /hdd1 is for swap, /hdd2 is for any install programs, and /hdd3 is for any old data?

How did you hack the rc.rofilesys?  How did you re-do your partitions (without screwing something up)?

I think I would like to have 2 partitions, one swap, the rest for data.  I may have my SD card re-formated to ext and use that as an alternative place for installing programs (and I'll live with the fact it will be permanently in the Zaurus).

Thanks!

Jay

/hdd1, ext file system and read-only access.
/hdd2, ext file system and read-write access.
/hdd3, vfat file system and read-write access.

How did you hack the rc.rofilesys?  How did you re-do your partitions (without screwing something up)?

You know what?  that second question was a stupid question. I'm finding the format information stuff on Hd/Meanie's document.

Ok, let me re-state my questions then

1. How/what did you hack/do the rc.rofilesys?
2. If I wanted to have two partitions, say, hdd1 and hdd2, I would do a:
unmount hdd3
unmount hdd2
run fdisk and delete hdd3
run fdisk and delete hdd2
run fdisk and create hdd2 as <WHATEVER>
???

Thanks for your eyes and insight!

My hacked rc.rofilesys is located at [a href=\"http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/custom/rc.rofilesys.hacked]http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/cus...ofilesys.hacked[/url]
Its for Sharp ROM, but I also got one for Cacko as well.

you can use parted to resize your partitions, I used it to shrink hdd3 (/dev/hda3 or /dev/hdc3) and then deleted hdd1 (/dev/hda1 or /dev/hdc1) and hdd2 (/dev/hda2 or /dev/hdc2)

if you only want two partitions, you should still mount the second partition as /hdd3 to retain compatability with Sharp Rom. Some apps (the dictionary and mobile map) expect there is hdd3 for the data files.

Anton:

When I flashed to the Cacko ROM,  I tried to follow the directions on this page:  http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/cacko-tips.html (http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/cacko-tips.html)  not knowing to look in a thread posting for the new directions.  Consequently, I tried to choose #5 as per the directions,  but it was a disclaimer rather than partitioning and so I just went ahead and chose flash.....stupid of me I know...but I wound up never partitioning to a size of 32.  Everything seems to work.  Do I need to flash again and partition?

Anyway,  at first I was not impressed with the Cacko ROM but now I am so impressed that I am today making a PayPal donation!  :-)

A few things...the link that explains how to get the Sandisk Connectplus wireless card to work with wifi is broken and I don't understand about the hex files.  Is there a firmware ipk I could install instead or are there directions somewhere else as to how to get that card to work with Cacko ROM??

Also,  could you make it easier to change the startup screen to a custom one?  And maybe have a choice of a picture instead of all the Linux code that  rolls by at power on....I'm sure some like to see those messages and so maybe there could be a way of choosing a picture OR the messages??

Thanks for your wonderful work!

If you still have default partitioning, you're simply wasting some space (approx 30 Mb) in your internal flash. I'd suggest to resise your root partition and reflash the ROM.

No, the wireless part of SanDisk card doesn't work at the moment under the Cacko ROM.

Maybe. Add a feature request at http://cacko.biz/cacko/bugs (http://cacko.biz/cacko/bugs)

You need to recompile the kernel with Sharp Logo enabled to hind the boot messages.

I have noticed that I do not get any USB connectivity when I attempt to connect the c3100 zaurus running the full 1.23 cacko with either a Linux PC or Windows XP PC.  Formerly with the factory Sharp ROM that comes with the Zaurus it would appear as a USB storage device on either a Linux PC or Windows XP PC. I then could stick programs onto the Zaurus by accessing the 'install' folder on my PC.

Anybody else have this problem?  What is the solution to get this back on the cacko 1.23 rom?

Thanks!!

Jay

PS I did see the "Missing Usb With Cacko 1.23" post where the solution was:

mount -o remount,rw /

followed by

ln -s /lib/modules.rom /lib/modules

and then reboot.

I already had the symbolic link before I tried.

I'm having trouble installing the latest Cacko on my 860.  I downloaded the 1.23 ROM files to my 860 and installed as instructed. However, on several attempts things get as far as the first post-install boot, then after calibrating the screen I get a message "Please wait, loading time and date dialog" and the system sits there forever. The Back and Forward buttons are alive and I can skip past this point, but the time/date tool will never launch.  Any suggestions?  Have I got faulty hardware?

If it's relevant, while booting I get a stream of messages like

jffs2_scan_eraseblock: Magic Bitmask 0x1905 not found

and

wrong magic

ok, so i have been running cacko 1.23 on my 3100 and i love it! it works very nicely.. however, i finally ran into a problem once i reformatted my hdd3 as ext3. (so i can put pocketworkstation on it)
i changed the rc.rofilesys with changed to mount hdd3 as ext3 but no luck. I ended up reflashing cacko and now the rc.rofilesys is an 8 byte file that just says "#exit 0"  what happened to rc.rofilesys?? Everything still boots up except for the error in mounting hda3. When i'm in cacko the microdrive light is always flashing and it shows up in 'cardctl info' and i can mount it manually. However it would be nice if it got mounted correctly in the startup...

So here are my questions:
1. Does cacko use the rc-rofilesys file?? (i noticed cacko will still startup fine without so i'm guessing no..)

2. If it doens't use rc-rofilesys then how do i fix my problem above?

3. What are hda1 & hda2 used for??  (i used to have sys & .sys directories but they somehow went away...)

Thanks so much for a GREAT rom!!

You need to edit the the file in /root/etc/rc.d

Backup of system files, used by Sharp restore process

When you allocatre 32 mb (the minimum) for the root  partition it's all used by the ROM files. The rest is available for user storage via /home

I don't believe it!  I just tried out cacko and it is wonderful except now neither of my two network cards work.  What gives?  I thought there was additional kernel modules not less, did I miss something?

The D-Link DCF-650W just says "unsupported card" and the old generic one tried to connect but can't.  I will try the generic one again and see if I can get it working.

Any ideas?  Are there network modules that I am missing that are not installed by default?

edit: ok, the generic one works. whew!

edit2:  also, how do I turn off the time setup from popping up when I tap on the time in the taskbar?  Jp rom didn't do that.

How can I get /home to show up in the system info program?  I can't easily see how much space I have left on it without typing "df -h" at the moment.  And what is "Temporary Storage" and what is it used for?

Thanks!

The C1000 has 128MB of internal flash memory. In Cacko, 32MB (or whatever size decided during the installation) gets partitioned into the root, leaving the remaining 96MB or so as the user (home) partition.
And this 96MB is whats shown in my system info's User Area tab as "Internal Flash". Actually its slightly less,  91136KB.
And my "Temporary Storage" is also around 10MB.

So since the C3100 also has the same 128MB flash memory, I assumed the info tab was the same as the C1000 with only the addition of the internal HD info bar.
Maybe I got it wrong?

Need a 3100 cacko user to confirm this.

You are correct rokugo.  I think maybe what is happening is that the internal hard drive is taking the spot of what should be the internal flash on my c3100.  The internal hard drive is listed first on the tab right where the internal flash should be.  But I have no idea how the memory applet works so I could be wrong.

Can any other c3100 cacko people confirm or deny this?

I also have another question regarding cacko and the internal hard drive for anyone who has tried this.  Would cacko still mount the drive if it only had one partition?  At the moment, and this is factory default, the drive had three partitions;  the first two are like 8 megabytes each and as far as I can tell are not used (why are they there?).  And the last one is the rest of the drive.  If I repartitioned it to onlt one partition would it still work?  I could probably even edit fstab myself anyway.  I just wonder if there is some strange reason for the two partitions.

Cacko mounts the hard drive the same way Sharp ROM does. It won't boot it you repartition your microdrive. Those two partitions contain system files, which are used to restore factory defaults from japanese menu.

I asked a question sort of like this earlier, wondering if one could re-partition the c3100 zaurus into something other than 3 partitions.  The answer was yes, although if you ever wanted to be 100% safe and compatible with the japanese ROM you needed a partition named hdd3.  Meanie supplied some code in this thread showing how you could get the ROM to respond to other partitions besides the default 3.

[Bug/problem with swapfile in Memory applet] ?
I don't mean to change the subject and I did a search first for this.
I just used my NAND backup from Trisoft for my C3100 and restored my original Sharp ROM, then I installed Cacko ROM 1.23.
This is the second time I've had Cacko 1.23 installed.
The first time, I immediately changed themes, so I never realized the "memory applet" on the taskbar was available.
My point of this post is, that there is a bug or problem with the "Swapfile" enabling function.
I enabled a 64Mb swapfile and it was working fine. It was located in /hdd3/Documents/
I verified this location by taking a look at it in Tree!Explorer.
I later decided to reboot my machine from the Qtopia boot screen, (accessed from Settings | Shutdown).
I think my problem may have been caused by, me not disabling the swapfile, before I rebooted.
The reboot was different than a "normal" reboot.
There was no graphic band at the top of the screen with Qtopia and other elements, like there is in a "normal" reboot.
Then it hung up at this error and kept repeating this error:
-------------------------------
hdd3: cannot find interrupt
-------------------------------
I'm not sure if I remember the exact wording, but it was saying it could not locate an "interrupt"

I had to resort to battery removal.
20 seconds later, I re-inserted my battery, plugged my C3100 into AC power and switched it on.
It NOW booted normally. Once I was back in Qtopia, I examined the swapfile in the "Memory" applet. It had been disabled.
I also looked at it in Tree!Explorer, and it was still there.
I decided to remove the swapfile, if it was going to cause these problems.
I removed it using the Memory applet, since that was the program that created it.
My question is: If I decide to use a swapfile again, should I Enable/Disable it whenever it is Needed/Not Needed?

I was using the swapfile to try to get a stubborn PDF file to open in QPDF 2.2.1
It never opened, This file opens easily in Picsel Browser on my Palm

I don't think it is a swapfile problem.  The swapfile is automaticly disabled on a reboot so you would have to re-enable it every time.

I have a similar problem with my internal hard drive as well and I don't use a swap file that much.  Ever sence I put cacko on it I will sometimes recieve a "hdd error" on reboot and it complaining about the hard drive not being ready in which it just kind of freezes there.  I just accept it as a small bug and a battery pull and restart usually fixes it.

I hate to clog this thread up with replys. I'll only make this one reply.
I just rebooted from the Shutdown icon in Settings tab, and my C3100 just rebooted normally.

I may have had another problem with the reboot mentioned in my post above,
but I don't know what the problem could be. I just assumed the swapfile was the cause.

I did install several programs before above mentioned reboot.

OK, this means that Qtopia version on 3100 doesn't show you the internal flash storage like it does on C1000. Sysinfo is just using Qtopia library functions, it doesn't query mounts directly to look up the storage.

Yeah, and I thought it was only like 1 meg in sharp rom as well.  10 megs seems like a lot but maybe some program needs it.

I have one more question.  I looked through this thread and didn't see it discussed yet.  The "current" view in the netsetup app doesn't work.  It shows the mac address and ESSID but no signal strength info.  I just reflashed for the fourth time and it has been the same every time.  What is missing?

I just spent more time than I would like to admit getting my networking set up. Make sure eeverything is set up on the access point side like the mac address list, wep key, or whatever you might use. On the client side set up a static IP just to take one more variable out of the picture. Make sure you are set up to match your access point. I set mine to a specific ESSID, infrastructure, and shared key. Depending on the access point you have, you might be able to find hints to these settings in the AP setup. My stubling block was that the ESSID is case sensitive. Once I finally entered the name in caps it was able to connect. Until then my CURRENT tab acted like yours.

No, I wasn't clear enough.
I can connect just fine.  Everything in cacko works great.  I have three different access points (home, work, friend) set up on it and I am able to connect to them all.  That "wireless monitor" program will show info when I am connected.  The only problem is the netsetup program its self does not show info.  In fact, when I click on the current tab the whole zaurus seems to slow to a crawl.

Has all interest been lost in creating a full release of cacko 1.23 for the c3000?  I thought I saw one mention that it was not going to be upgraded for older models but it seems to have been released for every c model exept teh 3000.  Just wondering.

Once in a while, I see posts by new Zaurus owners on problems with the Cacko installation process, most probably due to the Japanese maintenance menu.
So I thought I'd supplement Mazlovsky's original instructions with screenshots (and some minor editing) where relevant.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: This ROM requires a flash partition at least 32 MBytes in size!
Make sure to repartition your internal flash before updating ROM!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installation:

1. Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.

2. Make sure that Zaurus isn't plugged into AC power.

3. Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.

4. Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.

5. Press and hold the "OK" button on the keyboard.

6. Turn the power on, you should see the Maintenance Menu.
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/maintenance_menu_translation/maintenance_menu.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

7. Now Plug in the Power Cord.
You will get an error if it isn't plugged in!

8. Select option 4 (flash/update).
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/maintenance_menu_translation/update3.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

9. You then have several options including CF and SD (this screenshot differs according to your Zaurus model)
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/maintenance_menu_translation/update2.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

10. Choose either CF or SD, depending on which media you put the files in.

11. You are now in the "Cacko ROM Installer" start menu. Select "3 NAND Flash Utils"
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c1.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

12. Select "1 Resize root partition"
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c2.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

13. Enter 32 when prompted for root partition size.
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c3.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

12. Flash will be repartitioned and Zaurus will reboot.
[img]http://www.aonorokugo.net/rokugo/misc/zaurus/cacko_instal_pics/c4.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

13. Repeat steps 2-10 again and wait for the start menu.

14. Now select "1 Install new ROM" and wait.

15: Format your user partition (select YES):

So, here's what I have: sl-c1000 running Cacko heavy 1.23. All works fine.
Question is: I have a 8gb Seagate CF microdrive formatted Fat32. All this works fine too. The microdrive properties when viewed under windows XP show it to be 7.44 GB, when I check it's size on the Cacko memory applet it tells me it's 7.79gb.
So, where are the "missing" MBites? "Show all files" is enabled in Windows XP by the way, so it seems there are no hidden files lurking around.

They're probably not missing, but measured in a different way. Just like a hard drive manufacturer calls a drive that shows up as 74 gigs and 80 gig drive, the way cacko and windows calculate the amount of gigabytes could be different. See how close the amount is in bytes, perhaps?

Storage tab has the following:

Internal Disk : 3971808 Kb
Temporary Storage : 10240 Kb

and then of course plugging in any CF or SD cards will appear below that.

OK, this means that Qtopia version on 3100 doesn't show you the internal flash storage like it does on C1000. Sysinfo is just using Qtopia library functions, it doesn't query mounts directly to look up the storage.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=114313\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Funny how I never noticed this issue until now... but it is a HUGE one in my opinion for any 3100 users.  Here is just one example that made it clear to me.

Clean cacko 1.23 full flash.  Go to Settings tab, then choose Appearance.  Change the theme to QPE for example, and click OK.  After update choose Appearance again and choose ZBlue again.  Notice wallpaper doesn't come back.  Go to design tab and turn on wallpaper, then click the "none" box next to it.  Because the Z does not see the internal flash the only 'path' to choose from is the Internal Disk.  Thus I can never set the default wallpaper back as I have NO access to internal flash.

I wonder how many other system functions this issue breaks... it would explain some other random problems that only seem to pop up after customization.

I think the wallpaper is in your Documents folder under Image_Files.  At least that's where I found it.  I find it hard to believe that anything other than the sysinfo application is unable to see the internal flash.  I am still able to install to internal flash for example.  But I guess it is possible.

These instructions do not work with the 3100....what am I doing wrong? I am doing exactly what is said above. When I press and hold the OK button and turn the power one after following the previous steps, it only reboots normally.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Take out the battery and disconnect the external power and then let it sit for like 5 minutes.  After a while, put the battery back in, connect the ac and hold the OK button.  While holding OK turn the unit on.

Thanks Zamindar, but does not work.
I let the unit sit battery-less for more than 5 minutes, insert the battery and door, plug in the AC, press down on the center button that says "OK" and hold it, then I press the on button....I'm tried 400 times with different combinations of the above and it still boots up normally. My unit must be different, I guess.

The following step is required for 3100:

"Turn the zaurus over and flip the battery case switch to “Unlocked”. Remove the battery cover, and find the small reset microswitch on the left. The battery cover or the stylus can be used to press it."

Also, make sure you only press the "OK" portion of the circle and not the outer circle.

Maslovsky's instructions are fine, works for me everytime.

You don't need to complicate things by using the reset switch. Just make sure you press and hold the centre "OK" button ONLY, then push the ON button once with your other hand, and DON'T let go of the OK button until the Maintenance Menu appears.

Alternatively you can just let the Zaurus boot up normally, then from the QPE desktop start menu, select the small green icon to reboot, then immediately press and hold the OK button until the zaurus reboots into the MAintenance Menu.

I think my problem was pressing the circle around the "OK" button at the same time. Either way, I used the reset hole and i'm off and running with Cacko!

2. yank out the card then stick it back in

Mine's the same as xamindar's
I wonder who, that has a C3100 & Cacko 1.23, actually has the /home info showing in the storage tab.
Also check this out. If you plug in a card while the storage tab is showing, the bar graphs go from 2 to 3 bars,
but what's really noticable, is the bars become very thin with 3 graphs showing.

It can be fixed if you had the latest source code for the sysinfo app. If maslovski posted his latest source code, for the sysinfo then it wouldn't take someone with a C3100 too long to adjust it and have the graphs showing the right disk.

you'd be better off, at the command line doing "cardctl eject N" then "cardctl insert N" (where N is the slot number as show by "cardctl status".

You could make simple shell scripts and create icons on QT desktop for them.

This would save a lot of wear and tear on your Z!

i noticed another problem with cacko on my 3100.

can others verify this?

the netmon applet doesnt show signal strength.  it never changes from blue no matter how weak the wifi signal is.  This is probably connected to my network settings applet not working either.

Can someone tell me which library file or executable is responsible for this so I can try swapping it with the original from the jp sharp rom and see if it can be fixed?

some drivers are missing in cacko.  My first understanding was that it included MORE drivers but I was wrong.  One of my wireless cards does not work with cacko but it does with japanese rom.

The problem you are having is a known problem.  There is no known fix for it yet but you can get around it by typing "cardctl reset" in a console.

Title: Cacko Rom 1.23 Is Released
Post by: mikew on March 23, 2006, 05:38:32 am
Just upgraded my C760 to Cacko 1.23 to see what it was like before I buy a 3200, everything fine except the e-mail application insists on loading every time I switch on. Anyone know how to stop it loading as e-mail is about the only thing I don't have on my Z.

Also any guesses on when version 1.23 will work on the 3200.

Ok I am an idiot, been pressing the Mail key to turn my Zaurus on without actually looking at what key it was! Forgot that I had disabled the Mail key in version 1.22

All I need now is for Anton to give me a clue as to when a 3200 version of Cacko will be availble.

Question- when you create an appointment in the Cacko calendar, it creates a .vcs entry right?  Where is the .vcs information being stored?  What directory in the ROM is it being written to?

Thanks,

Jay

No, all PIM information is stored in Sharp propriatory database.

Thanks Anton although it does not help much, quite happy to continue donating for each new release, donating a C3200 is beyond my means.

Would it be possible to provide me with a version which includes the C3200 in the list of supported devices so I can test it?

Mike

Sharp's calendar (default in the cacko rom) uses their proprietary format stored under the dtm directory.  If you want vcs, then you want kde pim pi.

I thought it was using .vcs because if you try and do something with calendar like send a calendar appointment via IR port to your PC an 'event.vcs' file appears on your desktop (at least on a Windows PC).

I'm done with the KDE PIM Pi.  It was extremely difficult for me to do about anything with that suite, including sync'ing across IR port OR usb connection and unfortunately I'm stuck with Outlook at work.  I got intellisync to work.

at any point, you can use kdepim to import and you can use that to export out... vcs so your not stuck at all

New question:

Even though I got intellisync to work and the zaurus is sync'ing with Outlook now, I cannot do a simple telnet from Windows XP to my zaurus:

Microsoft Telnet> open
(to) 192.168.129.201
Connecting to 192.168.129.201...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed

Anyone have a guess on why this is failing and how I can correct this?  In 'PC Link' I have 'PC Link Setting' set, with hostname 'zaurus' with USB IP set to 192.168.129.201 and connection 'USB- TCP/IP (advanced)'?

Again I have a c3100 with the Cacko 1.23 ROM on it.

Thanks again

The telnet daemon is not enabled by default on the Sharp ROM, unless you have the image from TRIsoft where it is enabled. Cacko has SSHd enabled by default.

The sshd daemon is not enabled by default on the Cacko ROM either .

No matter if I do a 'ps -e | grep ssh' or go to the sysinfo icon and look at what all the processes are running, the sshd daemon is not up there.  What is more, if I goto to a konsole and do:

$ su
# /usr/sbin/sshd
# ps -e | grep ssh

I still don't see it.  it is like the ssh daemon dies as soon as it is started.

did you try ssh to it? might just not be running as a standalone daemon but running from inetd instead just like the samba service.

on a related note, since I don't have Cacko 1.23 running at the moment, can someone please paste the output of the mount command here? I just want to check what the cramfs image on Cacko is mounted as since I cannot remember.

So this is where I get all confused.  Windows XP actually does not have 'ssh' command-line like Linux.  I have two ssh programs, one I cannot remember, the other puTTY: [a href=\"http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/]http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/[/url].  Both ask for the USB IP which is 192.168.129.201.  But both ask for a port number.  I enter port number 23, because I thought that was the port number needed as Microsoft telnet was complaining it couldn't open that port (see my earlier error message).  The other ssh program I have which I don't remember the name asks for a login, which I have no clue so I just stick in 'zaurus'.  But in either case, they both fail.

On my Linux laptop at home I have tried:

[freyguy@localhost ~]$ ssh 192.168.129.201

[freyguy@localhost ~]$ ping 192.168.129.201
PING 192.168.129.201 (192.168.129.201) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- 192.168.129.201 ping statistics ---
121 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 120002ms

[freyguy@localhost ~]$ ssh -D 23 192.168.129.201
Privileged ports can only be forwarded by root.
[freyguy@localhost ~]$ ssh -p 192.168.129.201
Bad port '192.168.129.201'
[freyguy@localhost ~]$ ssh -p 23 192.168.129.201
ssh: connect to host 192.168.129.201 port 23: Connection timed out

For both the 'ssh' and 'scp' linux command-lines I am not sure exactly what flags I need to specify:

[freyguy@localhost ~]$ scp 192.168.129.201
usage: scp [-1246BCpqrv] [-c cipher] [-F ssh_config] [-i identity_file]
           [-l limit] [-o ssh_option] [-P port] [-S program]
           [[user@]host1:]file1 [...] [[user@]host2:]file2
[freyguy@localhost ~]$ ssh
usage: ssh [-1246AaCfghkMNnqsTtVvXxY] [-b bind_address] [-c cipher_spec]
           [-D port] [-e escape_char] [-F configfile] [-i identity_file]
           [-L port:host:hostport] [-l login_name] [-m mac_spec] [-o option]
           [-p port] [-R port:host:hostport] [-S ctl] [user@]hostname [command]

I admit, I am not an experienced user with ssh and scp at all.

telnet runs on port 23, ssh runs on port 22, and it defaults so there's no need to specify it unless you're doing something funky....

just "ssh 192.168.129.201"

if you use bluetooth for networking, you'd use a different address.

putty automatically chooses the correct port for ssh but you can override it

in Cacko, ssh is run by inetd - if you use "netstat -an | grep 22" you'll see something listening on tcp:22.

Thanks for this.

Nope, I'm trying to do an ssh through the USB connection, just like what was demonstrated with the triSOFT document used to set up intellisync (although they used telnet).

And nope, I still don't get a connection:

[freyguy@localhost Desktop]$ ssh 192.168.129.201
ssh: connect to host 192.168.129.201 port 22: Connection timed out
[freyguy@localhost Desktop]$

And this is the stats I get with the 'netstat -an | grep 22':

tcp  0     0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:*      LISTEN
unix 2  [ ]      STREAM    CONNECTED 64522  /tmp/.quickexec
unix 2  [ ]      STREAM    CONNECTED 2268    /tmp/.quickexec

ok, this is good news, your Z *is* running sshd. Try, on the Z, doing
"ssh 127.0.0.1" and verifying you can ssh back into the Z from itself.

Then, when the Z is connected, do "ifconfig -a" and see if there's a device called "usbd0" with an IP address of 192.168.129.201, and make sure the interface is UP.

On the PC, do "ipconfig /all" if windows and see what's what. If linux, do "ifconfig -a" and verify there's a usb0 device.

I have found that a Z with a nearly flat battery when using a sync/charge cable can load the USB port so much that it partly shuts down and you don't get a working connection!

Mar 30 07:19:47 204 kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 16
Mar 30 07:19:52 204 kernel: usb 1-1: khubd timed out on ep0in

then I did a 'dmesg' on the Z, this is what I got:

NETDEV WATCHDOG: usbd0: transmit timed out
usbd_device_bh: usbd_device_bh: no urb_sent function

Out of curiousity, do I need I different usb cable?  I have the one that came with the Z, which is supposed to make the Z a slave device instead of a master, I believe.

back on the linux laptop PC, I did a:

Hello Anton:
Is it possible that we'll be able to install cacko on our sl-7500 in the near future? None of the present versions is installable on sl-7500. Even the sl-750 version doesn't work despite the similarities in hardware specs.
Thank you

Hey, on a bit of a different subject, anyone notice that some Java apps don't load on the Zaurus for no apparent reason?

I followed Meanie's Java instructions in his zbook3k manual down to a T.  I picked Sun's Personal Java Solution, the pp4zaurus.  I installed Meanie's jlauncher and even midp launch.  Now I installed all of this on my SD card, but the SD card is formated with ext2 extension.

I created a CLASSPATH environment variable to point to where all the .jar/.class files were (in the j2me/lib directory).

I picked four java files to download and test:

(cocktail drink program)
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=862 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=862)

(chess)
https://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDet...d=29585&R=29585 (https://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=5ECE65A7EB17575EAXBA4FX7B3X2A88A&platformId=9&N=96805&Ntt=java&productId=29585&R=29585)

(warp...shooter game)
https://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDet...d=49479&R=49479 (https://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=5ECE65A7EB17575EAXBA4FX7B3X2A88A&platformId=9&N=96805&Ntt=java&productId=49479&R=49479)

(star astronomy program...supposively the most up-to-date program according to the website)
http://www.upto.org/zaurusskyexplorer/download.html (http://www.upto.org/zaurusskyexplorer/download.html)

Chess and the cocktail program worked for me.  Warp and the star explorer program did not.  Both tried to load, starting with the Z going black then the words "Please Wait" then it died.

The chess program actually calls evm, and since the java I installed uses cvm, I figured it loaded correctly because of Meanie's jlauncher program (good thinking Meanie!).

I later followed Meanie's suggestion of adding swingZ and rt .jar files into the j2me/lib directory, but that did not make any difference for the star explorer program and warp.

I did try hdpad_1.0_arm.ipk and got the following error, whether I ran java OR cvm on my linux laptop OR Zaurus:

[freyguy@localhost Desktop]$ java install.class
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: install/class

So much for 'design it once, run anywhere' Java motto?

did you try turning the screen rotation, ie Display with Magnified screen off?

also, to invoke java classes, you do not specify the .class extension

eg; # java install

I did try several things with the screen rotation- manipulating the .desktop file, turning the screen, doing the on-the-fly rotation...doubt I hit the 'magnified screen off'.

I also tried playing with the cvm command-lines too for a while.

Whoops...forgot about the java class thing there

I replied to your post linked above.
2 things I mentioned:
1. Get a NAND backup from trisoft for your model of Zaurus.
2. Your "Flash" partition size may be incorrect. That's what I have heard about, after flashing pdaXrom, then trying to get back to Sharp/Cacko.
Read THIS entire thread, somewhere toward the end, is a post with full screenshots of a Zaurus being flashed to Cacko.
You also need to mention what model of Zaurus you are flashing.

Hi,

Anyone have trouble making re-acurring calendar appointments?  Like my problem is when I schedule a calendar appointment then click on the 'no repeat..' button to make the appointment repeat for say weekly, when I save it, that re-acurring appointment does not show up on the calendar!  It's like it disappears!

on a related note, since I don't have Cacko 1.23 running at the moment, can someone please paste the output of the mount command here? I just want to check what the cramfs image on Cacko is mounted as since I cannot remember.

Here is the output from mine:

/proc on /proc type proc (rw)
/dev/ram1 on /dev type minix (rw)

I flashed over my Sharp Rom C3100 (Japanese original) to replace it with Cacko.  I didn't do a NAND backup. I thought it was available on the internet. I am having the same problem as others with the Japanese portion of 1.23 working.

It looked like a work around might be possible with a Japanese version and some file copying...  For a guy like me without the original NAND, am I out of luck?  I tried Trisoft's NAND backup - works, but no Japanese.  Meanie's Japanese support (japanese-support-c3100jaen_1.23_arm.ipk) works with Cacko 1.23 except for keyboard text entries.  Using the keyboard to enter Japanese shuts down the program text is being entered into.

If anyone has some thougts as to how I can get my hands on a for Japanese ROM for the 3100 1.02 - I would appreciate it.

Also keyboard entry of Japanese in Cacko 1.23 using the above japanese-support ipk would also be much appreciated.

Thanks for the ideas.

I just checked the manual.  There may be a way - Maintanance menu, complete reformat, normal.  At least it looked hopeful. Unfortunately I got an HDD1 Error!!  I am trying HDD Restore now on the DM menu.  Not so sure what that will do.

I checked all three CDs and didn't find anything on them that looked like it would become a ROM.

Later...
My guess is that guess the HDD restore was to restore the HDD from a CF.  Doing a HDD check, all three partitions were trashed.  Looks like more work, more money or an expensive paper weight.  I will start with more work.

Once I have reduced my 4gb HDD to 1GB by doing an HDD restore from a 1gb CF, is it forever 1gb?  Or if I purchase a 4gb CF, format it like the HDD is supposed to be formatted, and get the necessary files on it, could I do another HDD restore and get back the 4gb?

Any one know?

What I tried:
I set heads, sectors and cylinders as they were supposed to be, but the result was still 1gb.

Deleting all partitions didn't help.

Pretty sure if you go fdisk, then hit o, then hit w, that will clear out all the partition info and write out the mbr.  Then run fdisk again to set up the correct partitions.  Also make sure you're fdisking the correct card!

Thanks!  I got the idea of using HDD Clear in the DM menu which worked, but your suggestion would have been faster. I used 'o' then 'w' it to restore the CF.  It worked.

Thanks Barry.  I figured it out when it dien't initialize and went back to  the Trisoft information to see what I had done wrong.  Two hours later... I was up.

Trisoft's files are most helpful.  The Rom they use is 1.01, but not a problem to update that to 1.02.

Then I did a Maintance (OK-On), Format (3), Normal (1) and got all the directories etc back just like new.  Just need to add the dictionary get back to Meanie's sige and get some programs...

I just put Cacko on my SL-C1000 and I installed the Tetsu kernel patch to "recognize" (I can't come up with a better word) the full 4GB of my SD card.

I can read/write to the card in the Files tab or via command line.

Using Package Manager however, any time I try to install any package to the SD card it complains not enough space on the card however df -h shows the 4GB having 3.7GB free (i just got the card, nothing on it yet).

I can install to internal flash no problem, just not to the 4GB SD card.

The card is formatted FAT or VFAT I believe (I don't have the Z with me right now), do I have to have it ext2 or so for packages to be installed?

Has anyone experienced this?

portal:

No you do not have to have ext2 to install software to the card.  However, some software requires ext2 to be installed.  Not all software requires this, but only some..

When I tried installing software.. some of my software worked, and some software told me that it would not work.  So I think your free space issue is some other problem.

Hi. I am using this excellent ROM at the moment. I am also trying to get pocketworkstation to work. I am using a c860, and I have followed the clear instructions here (http://zaurusfun.4t.com/index.html).

Having exited Qtopia, Vncserver seems to start up in the background ok. The problem I have seems to be with Fbvnc. When the command is issued the following errors occur:
Code: [Select]
FBmouseopen: Error opening /dev/gpmdata, trying /dev/mouse
FBmouseopen: Error opening /dev/mouse
Skipping FBputcmap
Segmentation fault

In the instructions the following advice is found
Quote
5. Take a look at /mnt/card/debroot/usr/local/bin/zvncserver.
Change C700to your model CXX0 if you don't have C700.
(I have C750.) If you have aSL5X00, don't change anything.

Make sure you edit /usr/local/bin/Fbvnc, add "-hw c700"
switch to fbvnc invocation (two places).

I would change C700 to C860, but I can't find the places referred to in the files mentioned... I suspect that the versions have been updated since the howto was written. But that's the only way I haven't followed the instructions.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

I have two zaurii, 5500 and c3000,  and I'm a big fan of the cacko rom.  However I'm feeling a bit abandoned with my c3000.  I read all the rave reviews of 1.23 on all the clamshells, old and new, and my 3000 goes without.  Any news on when we may see a release for the 3000?

sorry, dude, but I don't think we'll be seeing cacko1.23 for c3000 any time soon; Anton Mas seems to be very busy work wise.

I would guess there are two ways to solve it
1/ unpack cacko1.23 for 3100 or 3200 and combine it with the sharp 3000 distribution, thus making a rom image and a hard disk file system
2/ hope someone else with a 3000 who understands a lot about making roms will do it... the only person I can think of who has the skills AND might have an interest in it would be Meanie.

I suppose the key is that most of the 3000's stuff is on the hard drive, so if you had a file system dump from a fresh cacko1.23 install, you could replace a lot of the hard drive files on a directory-by-directory basis.. copy to a new dir, rename old one out of the way and rename new one into place.

Provided you knew how to recover the 3000's file systems in the event of a cockup, it'd not be a massive risk.

It's beta. Can't ell you how well it works but you can find info there. And more Cacko info here :

Since Maslovsky hasn't logged in since the end of March of this year; I would say that the chances that we will see Cacko 1.24 are slim to none.  It's too bad because it is an excellent ROM.

True.  Well, I'm helping beta test weeXpc.

I still hold some small hope for pdaXrom.

Angstrom's development has progressed somewhat thanks to new blood.. but it's not alpha-quality yet.

Cacko is the only "fairly good" distribution I've used (for my C1000).

Anton is alive & well, but I think his career has had to take priority over everything else. Sadly, he's not really made it possible for someone else to take over his work, as there's just not enough documentation and source code to create an updated cacko.

For me the most stable and feature complete ROM for both my 1000 and 3200 right now is pdaXii13 Akita Full.

Is Cacko dead?

I've searched and searched, and can't find a site to download this ROM - only a bunch of very unusable links.

And if Cacko really is dead, what's the next easiest ROM to flash for a cautious newbie just getting started into this embedded thing?

THANKS!

Is Cacko dead?

problem is that a lot of files were lost when the forums were down and/or moved, more information here:

http://www.zaurus.org.uk/downloads.html (http://www.zaurus.org.uk/downloads.html)
http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/?q=cacko (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/?q=cacko)

I asked Anton if we'd see a new version any time, and he said (and my memory is not clear, so I hope I'm not misquoting) basically that with the loss of files on this forum he'd have to put in quite a bit of effort to reproduce everything, and also that basically Cacko is a "finished" product in that there's not anything new to add since there's nothing new from Sharp to add to it - that said, he didn't have access (AFAIK) to the full 3200 image which I think did have some new stuff.

It occurs to me that if we made a list of *realistic* things for cacko 1.24, maybe we could persuade Anton to come out of retirement to do a few updates... so I will create a new thread to do this.

Thanks, Paul.  Found and downloaded the package from the first url, and will try to install it using the instructions from the second.

I also kicked in a few pounds to maintain the download site - I'm glad somebody out there still keeps this image!!

glad to be of service, and thanks *very* much for the kind donation, very generous of you... it'll spur me on to finish a few things off (I lost a few pages when  I migrated from old web hosting to new one, so I need to spend a day checking the site over properly.).

btw, I am happy to mirror any other zaurus packages and programs that would be a tragedy if lost. I also offer the promise that I will not (voluntarily) take down my site, and should I ever be in a position to have to give it up, I will do my very best to ensure it is handed over to someone else (free of charge).

I had problems with the integrity of the zip file for c860 on the cacko 1.23 rom... files wouldn't extract (corrupted?)

I grabbed the files from a different site:
http://sharpromfeed.home.linuxtogo.org/dow.../cacko/rom1.23/ (http://sharpromfeed.home.linuxtogo.org/download/cacko/rom1.23/)

I am downloading the ones I am missing from that site and uploading them to my website.  The filesizes all look right of the ones I already put there.

I had to re-home my website and unfortunately I lost stuff in the process, sorry.

BTW, I would advise all zaurus owners to download and archive everything they come across, since if people drop out of the community they may also let their web hosting lapse and things can be lost forever.

No, the mirror is basically the same feed. I did some grep + awk magic on the Bryan's Packages file, put all links in a file and let wget download all links. Sorry Bryan! Actually, there is one file I added. It's mencoder, which although listed in the Packages file is missing in Bryan's feed.

he he, that's what I did!

$ wget http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/feed/Packages (http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/feed/Packages)
$ grep Filename: Packages  | awk '{print $2}' > index.txt
$ ( while read X; do wget http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/feed/$X; (http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/feed/$X;) done; ) < index.txt

I've added mencoder too from your feed. thanks!

I was thinking "it's a shame that cacko website has disappeared", but then I found a copy at The Wayback Machine

Is Cacko dead?
problem is that a lot of files were lost when the forums were down and/or moved ...
- What files were lost?  Not asking for a full rundown, just curious.  I've saved everything I've ever downloaded for either the previous SL5500 or the current C1000.  I've got about 8 GB of packages and quite a bit of source, including what I believe to be everything required to build Cacko, at least for the C1000.
- Hmmm.  Maybe not the source.  I'm looking in my Zaurus/Source directory and not seeing anything obviously Cacko.  I'd be annoyed if I just installed Ubuntu over the only copy of that I had.  (frown)  Ah well.  Machine wouldn't boot, anyway.
- Just wondering if any of that would be useful? (wayback notwithstanding)...
