Price of the zaurus on www.directfromjapan.net (http://www.directfromjapan.net) look like interesting because:

- Paypal fee in free for customer
- Shipping cost in not expensive
- Answer quickly to ALL e-mail

Just so things are clear: I believe Loloc is the owner of DirectFromJapan.net. Correct me if I'm wrong.

true, but since it only quotes model numbers and pricing, it's not too hard to guess what's going on.

the issue of guarantees is another matter.

Cagilaba, You get that from his grammar?

My Grammar sucks, Doesn;t mean I own a company  (Although I do. . ) Wait a second. . .

Maybe you're onto something! Has anyone ever seen what ol' PuppetMaster Gatesy's grammar is like?

Errr... no, it doesn't have anything to do with his grammar. Loloc (Loic Acher) participates actively in French PDA forums. Just do a search for loloc directfromjapan in Google. I have bought from him but got the impression that it was a pretty small-time operation (i.e. one person). So I was slightly worried about how warranty support would work out... luckily I haven't had to deal with that yet!

I think full disclosure is kind of important in a forum like this -- if you're advertising your business, make it clear who you are and don't post as if you've just "discovered" a wonderful new supplier.

Is Direct from Japan a good place to buy your Z from?

I just bought a Zaurus from them yesterday. I've send 3 e-mails already, none answered. I guess "quick" answer is a bit faster than that. I will write my experience if/when I get the pda.

<edit> I've just received mail that my order will be shipped in 24/48 hours.

Kind regards,
Raul

It's been more than 72h and I don't have any answer to e-mail. I don't know if my Zaurus was shipped or not. It's not really nice. You don't usually buy something for more than 600$ and want to ask yourself if it's send to you or not.

Cagilaba,

If it is true, good work in clarifying loloc's role with this company.

Raul,

good luck.  I hope that this is legit.

I don't think any business should be added to the wiki until many people have used it with decent reliability.  shirtpocket is an example that even established companies can go bad.

I'm not saying it's not legit. I'm just worried.

Paypal.

I wouldn't panic just yet.  When I bought mine from pricejapan there was a "transaction complete" sort of notification.... then a wait of a few days.  Wondering where your Z is can drive you nuts, but it doesn't mean the transaction is bad.

You know, it would be nice to send a customer e-mail that his Zaurus was send. I don't think that I expect too much.
And that: "- Answer quickly to ALL e-mail" isn't true

Especially if you are new customer and you just posted in a forum to drum up new business.  That is why I went with the streamline/trisoft combo for my latest Z.  They were estabilished and stephen answered *all* my mail (and there were lots).  I've been bitten by bad etailers so I don't mind spending the extra money.  I'm not affiliated with those guys BTW and I've heard good things about pricejapan.com and conics.net too.

I was going to buy from princejapan. They answered my e-mails. Then I saw that loloc is selling Zauruses (flashed for free) on ebay so I thought it would be faster. I've send him couple of e-mails. He answered. After payment he answered only one of my emails.

at least one guy got a Z from directfromjapan here:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=183&st=15 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=183&st=15) (in french)

I have not followed directfromjapan closely but I think it's just one (french) guy that started to sell Zaurus privately and then decided to go pro.

Maybe he is away for sometime, or maybe he is the kind of vendor that wrongly think that it's better to go low profile if something delays the order rather than explaining why.

well, you can raise a dispute with paypal and get your money back - I did, for a lost mobile phone accessory. and if you paid paypal bill with credit card, you can do a chargeback on that.

golden rule with paypal - never have any money in the account!

And it's still no here. What can I say? Go for pricejapan, you will have to wait 2-3 days, not 10 (and still counting).

oh so sorry to hear it's still not there....

OK now my experiences with directfromjapan / loloc on ebay.

i bought two zauruses from him on ebay, first one for my friend but then i fell in love with this thing and got quickly another for myself. lol. i chose loloc because i already bought one from him. dunno why my friend originally chose him - probably the low price! that was the other factor in my choice too hehe. both of the zauruses are C760's. mine is perfect. got it in like three days, amazingly fast. the first one got here in a week or so.
as for the warranty. i found out a few more things about it. my friend's zaurus has a dead pixel and he wanted to have it exchanged, loloc told us it can't be done for just one pixel. nvm as my friend sorted it out in another way (has some friend at Sharp)  it also has some problems with the backlight, but he minded the pixel more than that..
mine is perfect, hope it will remain that way! because i learnt that the unit has to be sent to japan. no shipping costs from japan back to my home. but you have to pay the cost to send it in. (same cost policy with my bsquare phh which has a german only warranty on it.. had to send it in once, but it wasn't a bad experience..)
ah i almost forgot, the units came directly from japan (yeah directfromjapan) but no vat or duty ...  sender was tricky enough hehe.

all in all i think he isn't unreliable, but does seem a newbie at this business. i don't say you shouldn't buy from him, if you need a cheap C760 which is like brand new (not brand new but you could think so when looking at it), directfromjapan is a good option.

Oki, I've got it at Friday. But ... I asked it to be flashed to Cacko or PdaXRom (whatever will be possible) and it's Sharp Rom. So why it took so long to send to me I will never know. And I'm going to ask loloc about it. That was one of my reasons to buy from him.
I unpacked it and when I saw how small Zaurus REALLY is i couldn't belive. I still don't belive

I bought my Zaurus SL-C1000 there and it took  1 week to come from Tokyo to my little house

For the replies to e-mail yes it's true they didn't reply to me neither.

But my Akita is here ... and not overpriced.

I asked loloc. He wrote that it was a mistake.
The most important thing is that it's here. I will flash it myself - I haven't done it yet.
And I'm in love at first sight

cmonex: I will PM'u

I found my Zaurus here http://www.geekstuff4u.com/index.php?cPath=24_53 (http://www.geekstuff4u.com/index.php?cPath=24_53)
There was no PayPal feed, I receved my pda in English one week after I order  it and I did not even have to pay the VAT
Because the price is so much better that this other site:

Got my sl1000 from directfromjapan through ebay, arived in something like 8 (long) days, box was a bit damaged in transport but nothing was damaged in it. all in all happy with the price and the service. only other thing worth mentioning is the charger, very tidy little fold out thing that goes in japanese plugs, not 220 volt ones. it is clearly stated on the site but its worth mentioning again. had the charger for my 5000d but an ipaq one is easy to find too. last week the left sound channel died so have to check what to do for warranty, will post back on that.
