Title: Newbie - 5500, 3.13 Rom & Usb Tcp/ip
Post by: silencer51 on November 09, 2005, 12:07:20 pm
Hi everyone, this is my first post here. First I'd like to say you have a great forum here.

I got a Zaurus SL-5500 off eBay a couple of days ago and for the past 3 hours I have been checking out the alternatives to Sharp's 3.13 ROM (opie, gpe etc.). For my needs, the 3.13 ROM will do best.

I have installed both v3 USB & Ethernet drivers on my PC and communication between the Z and my box (XP SP2) is fine, I can transfer files and sync with no problem. Both the Z (PC Sync setting) and my PC (Zaurus Manager) are configured to use "USB TCP/IP".

However, I have a problem - I can't share my PC's internet connection with my Z. When I go to "Settings"->"Network" on the Z, and I click "New", there are only 4 options available:

Dial-Up (Modem)
Dial-Up (IrDA)
LAN - TCP/IP
Wireless LAN - TCP/IP

If I'm not mistaken, there should be a fifth option named "USB TCP/IP". I distinctly remember this option being there on ROM ver. 2.38 (the one the Z came with). Now, on the 3.13 it's gone...

With OPIE, it's easy to configure (it shows on the network list as "usb0" or sthg similar).

Can anyone help me here? Is there another way I can configure usb0 with the Sharp 3.13 ROM? Am I doing something wrong? I searched the forums to no avail.

Thanks in advance guys!

Don't think there's any way to do it. Personally, I now use a wireless CF card (the Ambicom works out of the box on the 3.13) and my own WAP.

Surely this can't be right... Why would a feature in the 2.38 ROM not existi in the newer 3.13?

Does that mean that if I plan to share my internet connection from my PC to my Z I have to flash it with Opie or GPE?

He does say he's got a 5500.
This guide is for one of the clamshells.

Sharing of Internet via PC as Internet gateway

Windows IP: 192.168.129.200
Zaurus IP  : 192.168.129.201

Firstly, we need to ping each other to check the TCP/IP connection.

Next, issue the folllowing commands using SU mode:
- " route add default gw 192.168.129.200
- " route add -host 192,168.129.200 usb0d

After that, we should able to surf from Opera browser.

I hope the above will help.

I tried the above, but when I try the route add host command I get "Host name lookup failure".

The Z and the PC both ping each other without problems.

Any ideas?

Can you ping a remote computer by using its IP address? If you can then your problem is in the DNS server and it's not Zaurus specific.

route add -host 192,168.129.200 usb0d

In the command above, it shouldn't have a comma but a dot after the 192. maybe that's the problem. Otherwise, find out the IP address of your DNS sever (on the Windows machine) , and add a line
nameserver IP_address
to /etc/resolv.conf (replacing IP_address by the actual IP address of course). But I'm just guessing and maybe somebody else can give better suggestions.

I tried both your suggestions and I still can't get it to work.

UPDATE:

I have flashed my Z with the 3.5.4 OZ rom... Thankfully now I can configure usbd0 through Network Settings.

However I still cant get it to work. Both devices (Z & PC) respond to pings from one another.

One other thing: since OZ doesn't come with a browser (like Opera in the Sharp ROM), I searched around for Konqueror and I downloaded an ipk file. However, when I try to install it on my CF card I get dependency errors, the following are missing:

qt-embedded (>=2.3.2)
qpe base (=1.5.0)

Where can I get them? There's no feed for the 3.5.4 ROM and the 3.5.3 doesn't work for me (suspend problems).

Force the depends (using --force-depends on the command line) - this is because you're trying to use an ipk which is older than the flash image.

Note that Opera also works.

If I force the depends, the installation completes succesfully but when I try to start Konqueror it starts and immediately quits. Any ideas?

You will have to edit your /etc/ipkg.conf as shown in this thread for 3.5.4-rc feeds:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16111 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16111)

Then install konqueror from the feed.

You can also find a working opera7.55 with instructions here:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15885 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15885)

Follow Greg2's instructions - I'd assumed you'd taken konq from the 3.5.3 feed.

For this, and all other apps which either don't start or start then die, run them from the command line and see what the error message says.

Use 'ipkg files <packagename>' if you don't know what the binary is called, etc.

You need to create a /etc/resolv.conf file and contain the following:

nameserver  IPofServiceProviderNameServer

Your not using the sharp-compat-libs, please follow the instructions I've linked you to in my last post... here are the instructions:

OK...   Do you have your Z connected to the internet?

If so, you need to edit your /etc/ipkg.conf file to reflect the feed changes I have posted in this thread:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16111 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16111)

Then you can install whatever you like from the feeds with the package manager (only 1 or 2 apps at a time) or the command line and it will also install the dependencies required for them.

If you can't make a connection for this type of install then you will have to d/l the sharp-compat-libs ipk and the opie-sh ipk, copy them to your CF-card and install them from your terminal with ipkg using the command line.

the sharp-compat-libs_0.5-r2_arm.ipk and the opie-sh_1.2.0-r0_arm.ipk are in this feed:
http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.op....5.3/feed/opie/ (http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.3/feed/opie/)

Ok guys, I'm really confused...

Here's what I've got so far:

The Z's ethernet usb0 settings are:

Automatically Bring Up selected

Ip adress: 192.168.129.201
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

On my linux box I have established usb0 connection and I can ping to and from the Z normally.

However, i can't access the internet, whenever I try to ping anything else I get host lookup failures.

I tried adding "nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX." where x is my provider's dns address to resolv.conf but that didn't help...

So If anyone has any COMPLETE guide with which I can connect my Z to the internet through my linux PC I would greatly appreciate it... It seems everything I come up with with google is incomplete, demands some other procedure for which there are no instructions etc.

For example the USB Connectivity HOWTO on the OZ page isn't very helpful at all... Ok so I managed to establish a USB connection... How can I share my Linux box's DSL connection to my Z? Am I really that stupid?!

If anyone has any suggestions for the network settings on the Z (like gateway, dns etc.) please post them!

Now back to installing Opera...

I update the package list in the package manager but I can't seem to find a sharp-compat-libs or similar in the list... Any ideas?

Update: Ok I got, I had made a stupid typo in the ipkg.conf file...

I downloaded the sharp-compat-libs package, I installed it but when the installer configures it I get lots of linking errors:

i.e. "Error linking 'libqte.so.2,37' to /opt/QtPalmtop.compat/lib/libqte.so.2'

Where are you installing the packages? If you install to SD-card then do:

ipkg-link mount /media/card/packages

should find and link everything on your SD-card

Please note that some symlinking always fails with errors, afaik this is due to the way symlinking is performed with the package manager.
