Title says it all. I am considering an upgrade, but wonder if there is any point.
Can anyone who has used both tell me if the C3100 is in any way noticably faster than the 760/860?
I suppose a comparison to the C1000 would be fair also, since they should be the same speed.
Any other flames, bait, etc. about why one should or should not upgrade are certainly welcome. I am looking for advice.

First, I have never had a 760/860. However, C3100 has a USB host (you can connect hard drives, keyboards, WiFi/Bluetooth dongles, mice, etc.). In addition, the CPU in C3100 can be safely (?) overclocked or underclocked (using the Cacko Rom). This is because it was designed by Intel for dynamic changes in frequency. Then, you have an internal 4GB microdrive, which frees one CF slot for your other toys (WiFi card, etc.). People say that keyboard in CXX00 series is much better than in Cx60. C3100 looks great.
Search this forum for more info on Cx00 series.

As always it depends on what you use it for and how much that money is worth to you.
Personally I probably wouldn't be upgrading right now if it weren't for the fact that my 760 is sonically challenged. I used the 760 mainly as a pda and I didn't think the add features were worth "upgrading". Remember it also adds a little more size and weight. The 760 can use a small battery for those times when I need it to be small and light.
The screen is the same. The OS look and feel is pretty much the same. USB host adds little, if portability is your priority (not feasible to carry keyboard or HDD). CPU speed and memory are very similar if not the same. The extra 4GB is nice, but I was fine with 1gb sd.
On the otherside, I am looking forward to the arrival of my new 3100.

Without any benchmarking tests - just as a normal PDA user -
I would say speed wise they are not much different for day-to-day tasks.
Application loading etc on my C750 and my C1000 FEEL the same - they may actually differ by a second or two - but they feel the same.
Note : I haven't compared side by side - since I actually sold off my C750 and THEN bought my C1000, so....
Video certainly plays better - so that is a benchmark of the processor speed gain.

In my case, I upgraded from C3000 to C3100!
So, don't listen to me. Listen to other more reasonable folks around here.

Is this pre-rotated video? I thought that as the c7x0 machines have hardware rotate while the cxxxx machines have software rotate this would make the c7x0 machines faster for un-rotated video...?

if i remeber how the lcd screen is connected correctly then landscape mode is the default

The screen is the same.
Well, something's different. I have a 1000 and 760 sitting in front of me, and the 1000 screen has a slightly better colour temperature, and is a bit brighter. Whether this is due to ageing or a different screen, I dunno. The specs are the same, but the screen is different IMHO.
The keyboard is a difference, but to be honest I'm not sure which one I'm faster on - they're both too small for me to use comfortably.

Take a look at the video in this thread (on a PC) which is specifically encoded for the c3100: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15325&st=0 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15325&st=0)

My guess is aging especially of the backlighting. I have a 3100 now and can compare it to the 760. The difference between mine are minimal.

As far as video playback is concerned, the newer pxa270 chip with the iwmmx makes all the difference. With the proper kernel and player (Cacko 1.23, or Tetsu special kernel + iwmmx mplayer) I'm getting 640x480, 24fps, stereo video. This is the first combination that I've been able to use un-rotated and un-re-encoded (ie - meant for desktop) video on the Z. The newer clamshells blow the older ones right out of the water.
I've tried the same 640x480 video on both the 860 and 1000 - the 860 got maybe 5-8fps. The 1000 played it at essentially full speed.
Re-encoding and rotating the video produces smoother results, but isn't strictly necessary.
For all other operations, the 1000 and 3100 are basically the same speed as the Cx60s. The 3000 is a little slower because of its reliance on the microdrive.

For best perfomance (and a noticble speed gain in moive benchmarking) play off the SD card or USB flash disk

Hello
Something I'd be curious to know - what about videogames?
Can you play zpce (turbographx) games in vga at a good framerate?
snes and genesis would be interesting to know too. For what I've seen, it's only a qvga window centered in the vga display.
That would make the device quite interesting
