Hi all,
I have build some cramfs images with X/Qt preconfiured on it and also some X applications ready to go. This has been tested on C3x00 and C1000 models with the Sharp ROM and should also work on other models as well. All the cramfs images can be installed on SD or CF cards.
The bundle comes in several files,
xqt-gtk-jumbo.cramfs is the preconfigured X/Qt image
xqt-apps.cramfs contains various X applications (abiword,dillo,ethereal,flfm,fltdj,gimp,gqview,gnumeric,grisbi,minimo,nedit,sylp
eed,xchat,xmms)
xqt-mozilla.cramfs contains firefox and thunderbird
java.cramfs contains the full 1.3.1 jre plus compiler tools
xqt-openoffice.cramfs contains openoffice 1.1.4
and an install script to automatically configure the cramfs images
details can be found at http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/jumbo/xqtjumbo.html (http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/jumbo/xqtjumbo.html)
and discussions about these packages are on the C1000/3x00 General discussions forums https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=13011 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=13011)

Thanks Meanie, that is awesome. I am fixing to try it out. With all the information on your website and the time and effort you have put into your jumbo X/QT package and then this, you have been a great resource (along with everyone on OESF) for all of us who are just getting our feet wet with the capabilites of our Zaurus.

Thanks a lot Meanie!
I got it installed and running, as per your most excellent instructions. However, I have 2 remaining questions (perhaps more laster)
1) On your web page you show the pop-up menu for fluxbox, how did you do that? What/where do you tap to get the pop-up to pop up?
2)xmodmaprc file. I am running on a SL6000, and the built in keyboard works fine, but my nice IR Pocketop keyboard does not type lower case letters (only upper and numbers). When I look at your example xmodrc file, I don't see lower case, which is probably why.
Question is: How does one determine the scan codes of letters typed? I tried xev, but it doesn't seem to print anything when I type lower case letters
Thanks again!
Craig...
==== Edited on 26 Jan =================
OK, I have answers.
1) use the Fn key and tap to get the right button. Is this key definable (in some conf file)? On a SL-6000, it would be nice to move this key to an outside button (like the "dot" button).
2)This seems to be a confusion point between the internal keyboard (on a SL-6000) and the IR keyboard as to what is caps lock. If I press caps lock on the IR keyboard, then I get small chars in Xqt, and caps in Qt. Kind of odd, but it works. Again, is there a config file that sets up what is caps and what is not?
Thanks again,
Craig...

Is it possible to install packages onto the cramfs? I want to add gaim and possibly a newer version of grisbi but it doesn't work.

I am sure others are more knowledgable than I on this, but I believe that cramfs is (for the Zaurus) really readonly. That is because it is a compressed FS, it must be written in its entirety (at once). Given this, probably the X/qt images should be mounted as ro rather than rw.
Creating a cramfs image to use on the Zaurus is a whole different discussion. Unfortunately, I have no experience there.
I hope this helps,
Craig...

Actually you can create your own. After I posted above I later went back to meanie's site and he explains how to make your own image in addition to the ones he has. So I was able to make one for gaim. You need to do a lot of dependancy searching though.

ok x works, apps work but they are useless to me because i cant get the keyboard to work...
# xmodmap -pke > /home/zaurus/.xmodmaprc
this just gives me this error:
error while loading shared libs, libx11.so.6: cannot load shared object file: no such file or dir
also i have no idea how to remap. the whole instruction set is unclear to such a newbie as i am..
C760, cacko 1.23...
thanks...

you need to install the ipktools package for either of the above commands. the installer/setup scripts in the cramfs images is actually a modified xipk-link script. you are probably better off using the cramfs images since they are newer and if you want more speed, you can mount the cramfs images and copy their contents to /hdd4 before running the setup scripts.

thnx alot

Hey meanie, any news on an updated version of the cramfs?

I am still waiting for the non-cramfs update...

Do I need to use some other key map for debian? I have c3100 so as Meanie says it is included in the xqt pack... but in debian I can write on the terminal! (some chars are working but other are wrong! ex. P=backspace!!! )

Strange, all my keys work fine. try the keymap provided on the site and if that does not work, then use xev to customise

Hi meanie,
it seems that the location of the cramfs changed (http://www.thegrinder.ws/Meanies_XQT/cram/) , it is now : http://thegrinder.ws/Meanies_XQT/cram/ (http://thegrinder.ws/Meanies_XQT/cram/)
upd : http://www.thegrinder.ws/Meanies_XQT/cram/ (http://www.thegrinder.ws/Meanies_XQT/cram/) is working now (???)

I hate it when I have so many choices. I wouldn't mind getting a little guidance what to do.
I currently have a C1000 with Cacko 1.23 and a 256MB SD card, currently with 111MB available (more with a cleanup). When I installed Cacko I had it repartitioned, IIRC so that Cacko was in 32MB and the other 96MB was open; currently 85MB is still available there. My system info also shows 10MB of "Temporary Storage", anybody know what that is? <later>Oops, I found that note on one of Meanie's pages, about the tmpfs during boot.
I understand there are two forms of X/Qt, one a cramfs (size?) and the other a regular ipk 40MB in size. I understand the ipk can go in my 96MB internal flash partition, or the SD (or CF if I had one) with an additional linking step using "xipk-link". And the cramfs can go anywhere.
I'm guessing it makes sense to load the ipk into the internal flash; I have read the performance starting up some of these big packages is not so great, so leaving out the decompression step and the slow SD access should help, right?
My highest priority is a good spreadsheet (better than Hancom Sheet). I would probably first try gnumeric, if it can import and export .xls files. Can I fit that also in the internal flash? Or should it go on the SD? Performance tradeoffs? If it doesn't work out for my application, the next step would be openoffice. Am I going to have trouble fitting openoffice into my current hardware?
Next priority would be Firefox and Thunderbird. Same sorts of questions.
I'm not necessarily looking for a detailed map of what's best for my C1000, but just some general guidelines for choosing one configuration over another.
Finally I remember reading somewhere I need 512MB of space on the SD, I don't see why because X/Qt is only 40MB, right? And even smaller as a cramfs? I want to know if I need to buy another SD to get what I want. <later>Oops, again I noticed that this refers to the space needed if OpenOffice is installed.

yay i'd like to know that myself. using the cramfs from SD now and its slow to start up that's for sure..

Related to the last few posts, could Meanie or others comment on the pros and cons of using the various forms of Meanie's XQT-Jumbo packages:
1) non-cramfs
2) cramfs
3) squashfs
Not sure which one would be good for me to use on my C3100, now that I've restored my Z back to original state....
Also, besides the internal 4GB microdrive, I have a 1GB SD card that I usually leave in my 3100...I try to avoid depending on use of CF storage card so that I can always use my WiFi or Ethernet card....
Besides X/Qt, I'll probably install Debian too, so that's a consideration as well....
Appreciate all input!
Thanks,
Mark

I found that having an uncompressed image of the XQT Jumbo package on my SD card made the software run slower, probably due to the slow access time of the SD card.

X/Qt jumbo is now deprecated and not being updated anymore. Instead there is now X/Qt super jumbo aka pdaXqtrom. This new package is installed just like the jumbo cramfs images. The pdaXqtrom-base image replaces the xqt-gtk-jumbo image. The squashfs images have been uploaded, the cramfs images will follow shortly.
http://zaurus.daemons.gr/menaie/mirror/jum....html#pdaxqtrom (http://zaurus.daemons.gr/menaie/mirror/jumbo/xqtjumbo.html#pdaxqtrom)
Note: not all items on the menu are installed yet, but they will be in the next release. This release is for general testing to iron out bugs and see how well it works on other models apart from the C3x00 series. Check out the keyboard mappings and send me your fixes in case some keys are wrong since I am unable to test the keyboard mappings on other models except the ones I have. The SL-6000 should also work fine. Let me know about the window sizings.

Hi Meanie,
Want to try out your new pdaXqtrom...but don't want to mess things up...
So since I already have X/Qt/Debian installed using your cramfs images on my /hdd3, what should I do before installing??
Should I uninstall X/Qt first? and Debian too??
If so, what's best way to uninstall??
Thanks,
Mark

you should have a xqt-gtk-jumbo item in your uninstall list. just uninstall it and then install pdaXqtrom, or if you have the cramfs version of xqt-gtk-jumbo installed, then you can also just install pdaXqtrom and it will just overrride xqt-gtk-jumbo links. you can easily switch between pdaXqtrom and xqt-gtk-jumbo by just re-running their setup scripts. if yo installed the ipk, then you should uninstall it. pocketworkstation is currently being ignored by the pdaXqtrom. well, it calls debrunner to launch pocketworkstation, but debrunner doesn't exist yet i will add that later...

Any suggestions??

Hi Meanie,
Want to try out your new pdaXqtrom...but don't want to mess things up...Â
So since I already have X/Qt/Debian installed using your cramfs images on my /hdd3, what should I do before installing??
Should I uninstall X/Qt first? and Debian too??
If so, what's best way to uninstall??
Thanks,
Mark
you should have a xqt-gtk-jumbo item in your uninstall list. just uninstall it and then install pdaXqtrom, or if you have the cramfs version of xqt-gtk-jumbo installed, then you can also just install pdaXqtrom and it will just overrride xqt-gtk-jumbo links. you can easily switch between pdaXqtrom and xqt-gtk-jumbo by just re-running their setup scripts. if yo installed the ipk, then you should uninstall it. pocketworkstation is currently being ignored by the pdaXqtrom. well, it calls debrunner to launch pocketworkstation, but debrunner doesn't exist yet i will add that later...

bummer. it appears that the new cramfs jumbo package has messed up my wget. I hope it hasn't messed up anything else.

Anyone know a fix for this?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div] (http://index.php?act=findpost&pid=124336\")
hm.. what version of wget are you using? maybe try a newer version.
try this link [a href=\"http://zaurus.daemons.gr/menaie/feed/]http://zaurus.daemons.gr/menaie/feed/[/url]
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124358\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
The version I have is 1.10.2
I'll try the one on that feed next chance I get. I currently do not have a wget package listed in my install list so it must be the one that came with cacko/sharp rom.

Hey ArchiMark, after you uninstalled the previous version did you remimber to remove the mounts from your fstab and reboot?
-
Ummmmm......no........
So I'll do that and try again, right???......
Thanks, xamindar!

oh, he C locale problem again. That one is easy to fix.
Add
export LC_ALL=C
export LANGUAGE=C
into /home/zaurus/.profile
if the file does not exist, create a new one
# source /home/zaurus/.profile
to apply the setting or quit the console and start it again.
also, remove /etc/X11 directory and rerun pdaXqtrom-base-setup

Hey ArchiMark, after you uninstalled the previous version did you remimber to remove the mounts from your fstab and reboot?

Well, I installed the version of wget from your feed meanie (same version as the one I had) and it works now. Thanks!
-
well archimark, your installation looks ok.
the ambiguous entries in /etc/fstab could be a problem for automounter to correctly mount the squashfs images for you, but you can manually remount the images yourself after a reboot.
you probably have an older version of automounter which is not detected. try installing a newer version of automounter, ie 0.4.7
http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/stuff/ (http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/stuff/)
the cramfs warnings are ok because you are using the squashfs images instead.
the swap error is also ok. it just means the zaurus user could not enable swap for you because you dont have sudo installed. just enable swap manually yourself as root.
now the option pdaxrom doesn't exist, just xlauncher will do
I will fix the installer script a bit to make it more obvious.

YEY! waiting for the next one.

pdaXqtrom install script fixed. try again and all should be fine now (hopefully)
sudo is only needed to enable the swap for you automatically so it is not really required. just enable swap yourself

Slightly off topic: When you enable swap, and use it heavily, does your wifi card ever get kind of stuck? For example, I can remove the card and the wifi applet will stay in the tray and the zaurus doesn't even know it was removed. I can put it back in and still no change, except the connection LED will stay on. In this state I am not able to connect or reset the card and I have to reboot to fix it. It only happens when I have swap enabled on the hard disk.
On topic: How do I go about adding gaim and grisbi to pdaxqtrom(the only two programs I want this for and they aren't there)? Is it the same way I did it on the previous one? I can't just install them because I only have 15MB of /home left.
EDIT:: i just tried ssh and got the same error that i got with wget. dang, any ideas? i dont have the room to reinstall all my console programs.

well ok, just relink the libfloat.so.1 file from the rom image to /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/libfloat.so.1
eg on the c3100
ln -sf /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/lib/libfloat.so.1 /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/libfloat.so.1
please report all problems, even if you find a workaround so that it can be all included in the next update.
btw, gaim and grisbi were purposely left out because there are newer versions available which I was planning to compile, but I can put the older version on in the interim.
ok, i just did some investigation, all Cacko users will have the libfloat problem, while Sharp ROM users will be fine
I will have to write something smart in the installer for the Cacko users to leave their libfloat alone....

I don't see it listed in mount list...just see:

/dev/loop1 for zgcc
can you manually run pdaXqtrom-base-setup?

X never opened up....did see a text message briefly in the Qtopia taskbar along the bottom of the display that said that it was "starting X and pdaXqtrom - please wait a moment..." but then it went away and nothing else happened....
Tried rebooting and then tried mounting manually again but same thing happened....
Any other thoughts???

I install the base and app. The Xqt doing good but I can't run the app. For example if I ran firefox it comes with this
/usr/lib/firefox/lib/firefox-1.5/firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_option_context_new
Am I missing something?

archimark: you need to run pdaXqtrom-base-setup after you mount the image. it hasn't been run yet.
kenko: where is /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 linked to? did you have an older version of glib2 and gtk2 previously installed?
-
well ok, just relink the libfloat.so.1 file from the rom image to /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/libfloat.so.1
eg on the c3100
ln -sf /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/lib/libfloat.so.1 /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/libfloat.so.1
please report all problems, even if you find a workaround so that it can be all included in the next update.
ok, i just did some investigation, all Cacko users will have the libfloat problem, while Sharp ROM users will be fine
I will have to write something smart in the installer for the Cacko users to leave their libfloat alone....
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124465\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I just downloaded pdaXqtrom-base.cramfs and pdaXqtrom-install.zip last night (4-26-06)
I'm using Cacko Lite, has the libfloat problem been fixed?
Thank you

Thanks, Meanie...but...
I've mounted the image manually and then tried:

pdaXqtrom-base-setup: not found
So how do I run the pdaXqtrom-base-setup?
I'm located in /hdd3 where I mounted the image files...

UPDATE:
OK, figured out how to run pdaXqtrom-base-setup....
then did
$xlauncher pdaXqtrom

starting X and pdaXqtrom - please wait a moment....
This time X window opened!!
But that's all I get is the X window with that gray bar at the top of the display....no pdaXrom that I see....
What now???
Thanks,

So how do you open up pdaXqtrom or is this it??? ...thought this is just X ??.....

that's an old library from the original xqt packages. which images did you download? maybe if you wait a day or two, I am going to upload some new images with several bug fixes and enhancements.
archimark: this is an updated X/Qt package that runs the latest pdaXrom applications, it is not pdaXrom. The libraries in this package have been updated to use the same version as the ones provided by pdaXrom so the same versions of applications as pdaXrom can be run but they all need to be specially compiled for X/Qt. The old version of X/Qt could not run the newer pdaXrom apps, but only the very old pdaXrom 1.0 apps, ie firefox 0.9, gimp 1.25, gnumeric 1.2. This version allows you to run pdaXrom 1.1.0 apps (if they have been recompiled for xqt), ie firefox 1.5, gnumeric 1.6, gimp 2.3, etc...

oh by the way, there is an xlauncher -debug option so you can see entries in the terminal of what happens and what errors occur
once it runs ok from the terminal, it should run fine also from the Qtopia menu. but if it does not, let me know so I can fix it.
-
Meanie, on your pdaXqtrom page you say:
FluxBox menu is activated by holding the Fn key and tapping on the desktop. To release/cancel from the menu, tap anywhere on the desktop (but not on any window/application on the desktop).
I can get the FluxBox menu OK...but when I got further into the submenus I can't seem to get them to go away...tried various ways, but no go... how do you get rid of them ?, there's no closebox button either.....
Otherwise, things seem be working OK now, apps seem to open OK so far....
Thanks!
Mark

Fn + click the titlebar of the submenus.
That made them close for me.
Also, some settings options don't seem to have a method to make them close, for these, I used my cancel button, then they closed.
I have since uninstalled pdaXqtrom. I'm waiting for a response about the automounter.
EDIT: Meanie, I didn't install the automounter. I heard Cacko already has an automounter.
(I had probs with automounter in Cacko in earlier install of X/Qt-jumbo package)

the only difference in auto mounting between Cacko and Sharp ROM is that Cacko has a simple usb-storage script while Sharp ROM does not by default
-
I'll just reply to this thread since everyone seems to read this one first.
I have a 128mb swapfile, isn't that large enough for Abiword?
My images that I tried to browse in GQview are mostly *.jpg and *.png
I've enclosed screenshots of the directory in Bash and in GQview.
The files are there, but GQview doesn't "see" them
Thank you.
I'll check into abiword, maybe it just needs more memory because it is a big app after all.
I don't think the problem with GQview has anything to do with the file system. Maybe its a filter. What type of images do you have?
automounter is for mounting the cramfs/squashfs images for you automatically upon reboot and also for creating extra loop devices. the installer creates extra loop devices for you as well, thus it can mount the loop devices for you. however, when you reboot, the extra loop devices are gone. auto mounter recreates them for you during boot and also mounts the devices for you. Cacko, and even Sharp ROM both automatically mount the loop devices for you if they are present in /etc/fstab, but they only mount the first 2 and then run out of loop devices. automounter then creates more loop devices and mounts all the left over entries that were not previously mounted and automounter also carefully checks which entries had already been mounted and won't mount them again. Previous versions of automounter had problem on Cacko, because it also unmounted Cacko's internal loop device when you ran automounter stop. The latest version, 0.4.7 fixes this, and it also makes a backup of the usb-storage file prior to installation so when you uninstall automounter it is able to restore the usb-storage script. In the previous versions, the installer/uninstaller program just removed usb-storage.
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mntloop is now linked to /usr/bin/automounter so you can just run
automounter stop/start

X/Qt jumbo is now deprecated and not being updated anymore. Instead there is now X/Qt super jumbo aka pdaXqtrom. This new package is installed just like the jumbo cramfs images. The pdaXqtrom-base image replaces the xqt-gtk-jumbo image. The squashfs images have been uploaded, the cramfs images will follow shortly.

I actually only need Gnumeric under QTopia. Is your super jumbo the thing I need for that?
thanks

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124699\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
OK, I think it's actually fluxbox, I just checked and see that ~/.fluxbox/styles is empty
This is because /mnt/pdaxqtrom-base/home/zaurus/.fluxbox/styles is empty. Is this the reason?
-
I installed it and seems fine, but the fluxbox is plain, no theme, and no Styles available from the dropdown menu.

What's the problem?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124698\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I figured it out. The reason was that the pdaxqtrom setup script didn't symlink the /opt/QtPalmtop/share/fluxbox/styles directory.
Did it manually and all's fine.
Meanie, this what you've done is unbelievable. A great breakthrough. Thank you very much.

Yep, that did it, Jon_J !!

eject the wifi from the icon at the taskbar. then pull wifi out.

Note:
In this state I am not able to connect or reset the card and I have to reboot to fix it. It only happens when I have swap enabled on the hard disk.
The icon just reports "failed to eject card." I guess you haven't had this problem. It's very strange.
Oh, and relinking that libfloat didn't correct the problem I am having with console apps.
-
Is the ShowDesktopIcons option disabled in the included version of Fluxbox?
At least when I click it it doesn't seem to be doing anything...

yeah, it is not implemented yet

Yeah, it still does it.
EDIT: A few console apps continued to give me "undefined symbol: __umodsi3" so I decided to remove pdaxqtrom for the moment. When it is removed, a few libraries under /usr/lib.rom/ are not relinked so I had to do it manually. libcrypto and libssl so far. There might be more. Also, when I reboot now, the big blue cacko splash screen no longer shows right before I enter qtoopia.

Hi Meanie
well, first, thanks for all your work
I'm running cacko on 860 and I have few problems with pdaXqtrom
I'm running the last version of your squashfs image (base and apps), and I can't run gnumeric or firefox 1.5
When I try to open them through qtopia i don't see the error, so I do open Xqt throught the icon your instalation did create "Start X"
Then, when I try to run firefox or gnumeric, I get this error :
/usr/lib/firefox/lib/firefox-1.5/firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_type_class_add_private
(replace with gnumeric-1.6.0 for the error with gnumeric)
I manage to run few xqt apps, including XMMS and firefox 0.9...
Hope i can run gnumeric soon

hmm, do you have a file /usr/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 ?
if so, try renaming it to libgcc_so.bak and then do a ldconfig and see if that fixes it.

it will be properly fixed in the next version, ie I will add an english locale

MEANIE when do you expect to release the new pdaXqtrom version with english local supported ?
-
It's ready for testing. I uploaded the cramfs version first this time. The squashfs version will be available shortly once it has finished uploading...
http://www.thegrinder.ws/Meanies_XQT/pdaxq.../pdaxqtrom.html (http://www.thegrinder.ws/Meanies_XQT/pdaxqtrom/pdaxqtrom.html)
For those who only want English create a file called monolingual under /etc/X11 so it will load faster

I get an error when I try to run gaim. I haven't tried any other apps yet, I'll edit this post if the other apps have the same problem. Error is as follows:
bash-3.00$ gaim
Gaim has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file.
This is a bug in the software and has happened through
no fault of your own.
It is possible that this bug is already fixed in CVS.
If you can reproduce the crash, please notify the gaim
maintainers by reporting a bug at

Please make sure to specify what you were doing at the time,
and post the backtrace from the core file. If you do not know
how to get the backtrace, please get instructions at
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/gdb.php. If you need further
assistance, please IM either SeanEgn or LSchiere and
they can help you.

Also, I get two messages when I open up a normal terminal:
sourcing compiler environment at /mnt/zgcc
sourcing compiler environment at /mnt/zgcc
Shouldn't there only be one? What do I edit to fix that?
EDIT: ok, so far other programs are working just fine. I didn't find a core dump anywhere. If there is anything else I can provide please let me know.

Hello Meanie
Well have tested the new cramfs release
after installing the following apps was not working gimp,gnumeric,sctie,abiword,xarchiver...
but all had the same warning something like error while loading shared libraries /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0
so i have typed the following, to see what will happen
su
ln -sf /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/gtk-2.0 /usr/lib/gtk-2.0
gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders
with the second command line i had some warning but do not remember what it was
anyway after that have launched those applications all are working now
but things go slow even after creating monolingual file
btw: what do you mean by swap file of 64M minimum is required, as i am runing pdaxtrom (uncompressed) from 1g cf ext2 formatted ?
-
is there an automounter update? so far, automounter-c3000_0.4.7_arm.zip
-
man this is so sweeeeeett!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot believe the amount of programs you put into this thing. This is amazing. Now I can throw away my pc!
For newbies, you if you have problems like i did with the qt tabs icons, just startx icon and then when its fully loaded, use fn+ stylus on screen and you can highlight x applications and launch em through there. also, if you want to go full screen, hit menu on the keyboard and click on fullscreen.
meanie...I am speechless. ohh god i can't put this thing down...too cool!

Hey,
I did the following:
1. Installed Cacko 1.23 on a C-1000.
2. Formatted the SD card with mkfs.msdos /dev/mmcda1. Made a 128 mb swap file on the card.
3. Copied the base, apps, and install script to the SD card through a USB connection w/ the zaurus
4. Ran the said install script, they both installed to root of the SD card
5. Ran the ln fs and gdk-pixbuf command from previous reply.
6. Ran my first X program w/ "xlauncher gaim"
7. Ran other programs through the menu and through "xlauncher [prgm name]"
Things that didn't work:
GAIM (segfault error)
Things that worked super-slowly:
Gimp
Free42
FireFox
Dillo
That's all I've tested. I don't have a graphical menu for X/QT - only a menu option in the main bottom left menu. I'm going to try restarting my z and seeing what happens.

try in /home/zaurus/.profile
not sure how you got duplicate ones, but just remove one and you should be fine. but even then, it does not hurt since it is just setting up the environment variables twice
well, if gaim is the only problem, then that's quite positive. i was planning to compile gaim 2.0 anyway later on, so I am not going to worry about 1.5 not working but replace it with 2.0 instead.
-
I restarted my Z. Now I need to remount the cramfs images. How do I do that? I know I do it with automounter, but I'm not sure what the protocol is. Can someone give step by step instructions or link to them?
Thanks,
Louis

well, so far, there seems to be problems with gaim and gimp for some people while it works for others.
a swapfile is really needed for better speed. also, it seems that running off SD card is slower than running off CF/internal MicroDrive. also note that this is never going to be as fast as pdaXrom, so if you want speed, go use pdaXrom instead. this package is intended to allow you to run apps available in pdaXrom while retaining Sharp/Cacko ROM.
the very first load of X/Qt is very slow, but with a swapfile, subsequent launches are much faster.
by default, the scim subsystem is loaded when X/Qt is loaded. scim allows you to input other languages such a Chinese and Japanese. if the file monolingual exists, then scim won't be loaded and X/Qt will load faster.
also, the icons on the X/Q tab launch the apps in rootless/embedded mode by default. This feature is experimental and might not always work. but if it works, then the app is launched in a shrink down version of X/Qt on the qtopia desktop. I have limited the number of apps launched in this way to 2. to turn off this feature and make those icons behave as before and just launch the apps into the full X/Qt environment, remove the file /etc/X11/app-defaults/Xembed
the installer will not remove /home/zaurus/.fluxbox so if you had pdaXrom installed previously, the old settings will remain untouched. to get the latest menus and keymappings, remove this directory before installing pdaXqtrom, ie rm -r /home/zaurus/.fluxbox
manually mounting the cramfs files is done as follows:
su
mount /mnt/card/pdaXqtrom-base.cramfs
mount /mnt/card/pdaXqtrom-apps.cramfs
ldconfig
If you see that you may have an older automounter installed but you have 0.4.7 installed, just ignore it. seems like it says that on Cacko ROM.
with Cacko, there is a memory applet on the Qt taskbar. use it to create a swapfile and make sure to enable the swapfile when using X/Qt. For Sharp ROM users, you can install the memory applet or just do it manually from the console.
-
i get an error:
Can't find /mnt/card/pdaXqtrom-base.cramfs in /etc/fstab
Louis
-
The axyftp works but i do encounter a problem when looking through 200 folders. When I try and highlight one, it shoots/scrolls down to the bottom. Is there a work around for this? So far, i use the directorynavigation display to type in the locations on where I want to go. I can browse the directories but i can't highlight with stylus.
-
2 minutes 30 seconds to start FireFox after X/QT has loaded on a C-1000 running cramfs from SD w/ 64 mb swap. What are other peoples launch times?
~1 minute to load http://www.cnn.com/ (http://www.cnn.com/)
1 minute 20 seconds to load X/QT from hitting the StartX button.
Is there a QT version of Links or can the X version be included in this package?
I am happy to report that the C-3000 automounter is working beautifully on my C-1000. After install I just had to eject/re-insert the SD card. After rebooting it did the mounting that I could not do manually. Yay!
Slowness aside, this is really really cool. Thanks Meanie!! It has been relatively painless in comparison to other Zaurus things...

While gaim doesn't work for me the gimp will spit out all kinds of errors in the console but it will still load.

Gimp has a font issue. Gaim needs ssl

Running from mounted cramfs on a CF card with 64mb swap and monolingual set, Firefox started to a blank screen in a minute and 30 seconds. X/Qt ranged from 45 seconds to one and a half minutes. On the other hand, dillo launched in 30 seconds. My CNN.com results with Firefox were similar, but dillo could load Slashdot and LWN in a few seconds. So who needs CNN anyway?
I can adjust to long startups, but Firefox was fairly sluggish even after it was loaded. Most other apps seemed okay once they were loaded. If the apps are stable through multiple suspensions, the load time won't matter that much. After giving this a little time to get solid, I am hoping that expanding it and running uncompressed will give a reasonable speed boost.

Hello Meanie
a swapfile is really needed for better speed. also, it seems that running off SD card is slower than running off CF/internal MicroDrive. also note that this is never going to be as fast as pdaXrom, so if you want speed, go use pdaXrom instead.
while waiting this new release of pdaXqtrom, i flashed my zaurus with pdaxrom,
to test your gtk2 hacked file it seems it is a corrupted file cause i get crc error
with Cacko, there is a memory applet on the Qt taskbar. use it to create a swapfile and make sure to enable the swapfile when using X/Qt. For Sharp ROM users, you can install the memory applet or just do it manually from the console.
But how to enable swapfile when using X/Qt ??
EDIT: ok i found the following in your website
enabling Swap
The following demonstrates how to configure a 128MB swap file on the C3000's harddisk. Normally a swap file is not required unless you are running many X/Qt applications and doing onboard development. Most users with X/Qt will probably only require 32MB - 64MB swapfile.
# su
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/hdd3/swapfile bs=1048576 count=128
# mkswap /hdd3/swapfile
# swapon /hdd3/swapfile
# echo "/hdd3/swapfile swap defaults 0 0" >> /etc/fstab
To enable swap:
# su
# swapon /hdd3/swapfile
To disable swap:
# su
# swapoff /hdd3/swapfile
To check swap status:
# cat /proc/swaps
As i am using c860 should i only replace /hdd3/swapfile with /home/swapfile (with /mnt/cf/swapfile for CF) ??
and to enable swapfile on xqt should i type the command line from xqt terminal ??
thanks
freebird

it does not matter how or where you enble swap from as long as you do it. xqt is just one huge app from the OS point of view , ie Sharp/Cacko ROM.
Firefox is the biggest and slowest app. It's slow even on pdaXrom because it loads so many little files and needs lots of memory. you can speed it up by disabling some of the features like automatically checking for updates, etc.. which it does on startup. also, specifying a location for tmp files and increasing the cache will also help. just use dillo as a lightweight and fast browser.
btw, I updated the cramfs images. it is version 0.7.8 now
fixed gimp a bit, ie no more error messages, and the installer should warn you if you have a conflicting version of freetype installed.
upgraded gaim to the latest 2.0 beta3. fixed ssl support also.
fixed link for /usr/lib/gtk-2.0 to be done automatically in the setup script

Well
have downloaded qtopia-memoryapplet_1.0.3_arm.ipk
from the GUI created a .swapfile of 128M on my CF
then enabled it as follow
su
swapon /mnt/cf/.swapfile
seems could be done from the GUI too
Now things are going much better
i am using in the same time rox, firefox, gimp and abiword and switching bettween them
No memory warnings now such as "system is becoming slow please close some apps"
and i think also that is is not slower than pdaxrom
as i have already tested firefox on pdaxrom
and i think that it is enought smooth for working
thanks MEANIE
btw: ROX seems having some problems with windows maximazing i will test more later
-
hmm, gaim still segfaults in the new one.

hey freebird, can you test gaim? I am trying to figure out if it is a problem with my Zaurus. I haven't flashed it in a long time and I have done a lot to it so I'm curious. Mine might be dure for a reflash.

why didnt you use the install/setup scripts?
all you problems is because you didnt run the setup scripts
installing to SD and CF is exactly the same (except for speed of those devices). what are you trying to accomplish?
xamindar: i could reproduce the crash with gaim 1.5, but with gaim 2.0 it works fine on my machine. does it work for other people? did you reinstall or just replace the images?
you can replace the images and not run the install script but you have to run each of the setup script from the mounted images

Meanie
have not run pdaxqtrom-install.sh but have run the two scripts from the mounted images pdaXqtrom-base.sh and pdaXqtApps.sh
mean i proceed as follow
#mkdir /mnt/cf/pdaXqtrom-base
#mount -o loop pdaXqtrom-base.cramfs /mnt
#cp -R /mnt/* /usr/mnt.rom/cf/pdaXqtrom-base
#umount /mnt
# cd /mnt/cf/pdaXqtrom-base
#./pdaXqtrom-base-setup
i do same for the pdaXqtrom-apps
Xamindar
i will test and let you knew

if you do that then the CF card has to be ext2 or ext3 and you need to use cp -a, not cp -R

I removed the old ones from the package manager and then edited fstab and removed the entries in there. Then rebooted. Then I installed the new ones with the install script and rebooted.
hmm, I'll fiddle around with it a little more. Figures the only app I want doesn't work. I have tested gimp, dillo, firefox and they all work great!

Yes
my CF is ext2, but have always used cp -R should i reinstall with cp -a
have also created a swapfile of 128M on my cf
and finaly have installed openoffice cramfs from xqtcramfs and it works great with pdaXqtrom
but noticed that openoffice displays text documents faster than abiword specially when scrolling !!!

ok, that explains it.
for some reason your libpng is linked to libqte? how did that happen?
and because of that anything that needs to read png files will fail.
just remove them all and rerun the setup script, ie
rm /opt/QtPalmtop/libpng*
rm /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders

Dang, I tried that and gaim still segfaults when I try to add an account.
Can I provide anything that may help?

Hi Meanie
In addition to my questions on the other topic, I just wanted to talk about the speed:
it take me 20 seconde to launch firefox, but its version 0.9 btw...
still have problem to launch Firefox 1.5... I'm rebooting my Z to see if it do change anything
-
realy tired lol

Did we give up on gaim?
-
Just a little followup. I have reflashed my Zaurus back to the japanese rom. Gaim still crashes for me when I try to add an account. However, I copied my .gaim folder from my linux machine over to the zaurus and bypassed the account add screen. So now it works (as long as I don't have to add an account).
