Title: My New 2 Gig Sd Card Won't Mount At All - Help!
Post by: dss on November 24, 2005, 10:21:04 am
Hello everyone,

I just bought a new 2 Gig SD card for my Zaurus SL-C1000. It mounts on my Mac and Linux box just fine but will not mount at all on my Zaurus. I tried mounting it in CACKO environment and PDAXROM RC.12 but no go.. Does my model of Zaurus not work with 2 gig SD cards? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

David

Zaurii are limited to 1gb max.  This is a hardware limitation

My guess is that 1GB cards were the max when the clamshells were designed and they haven't thought it worth upgrading.

This hardware limitation relates to both SD and CF slots??

I was thinking about buying a 4GB CF solely to carry MP3/Videos...

The CF slot doesn't have the limitation - the specs for CF are open and well known, so the Z has a good implementation. I've got a 6gb microdrive working quite well.

It's been suggested that the 1gb limitation on SD is a driver limitation. The SD specs are (or were until very recently) closed, leaving open source stuck with the muck more limited MMC specs. That's why we don't have SDIO, either.

That's is good news  (for newbie as me)!

So I can at least, dream with a ner 4GB CF for my MP3/Videos...
No hardware limitation, no software limitation, only money limitation...

Also, your card doesn't have to be a total waste.  You CAN use it...  in your CF slot, with a cheap adapter.

I, like another person, disagree, and are convinced it's a driver problem... however, it might as well be a hardware problem because the SD driver in the Zaurus's kernel is Sharp's closed proprietary source, and cannot be changed. I suspect it's a hard limit written, probably accidentally, into the code, and considerable reverse engineering would be needed to fix it, if that is possible at all.

What frustrates and demoralises me is that as far as I know, the 3100 suffers from the problem, which means that Sharp didn't attempt to fix the driver in what is a very recent software release of their partially proprietary OS, yet 2GB cards were available before the 3000 was even rumoured. Whether this is Sharp's lazyness, ignorance or simple contempt for their customers, I don't know!
