Title: Gnu Robbo For Slxx00 And C Series
Post by: TheGreenKnight on November 24, 2005, 12:53:31 pm
Hi

I have played GNU Robbo on my Mandrake box for years and so I thought it was about time it got ported to my Zaurus SL5500

It is very stable and is configurable as far as the keys go; uses SDL.

I am in the process of reintroducing the intro screen as I ripped out all the SDL-ttf stuff.

I have added it to ZSI and ELSIX but they haven't updated their websites and so it just sits on my site with nobody knowing about it

Anyway, if you're interested go here:- http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/ (http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/)

Cheers

Actually maybe the 'General Support and Discussion > Software' forum was a better place to post this. Perhaps a mod could move it.

Nice little game... I like it!

If you fix your link to the zaurus_source.tar.gz I will try to make an ipk?

Thanks

Thanks Greg

I've fixed the link.

Fortunecity (the host of my free web space) is doing wierd things: their ftp wouldn't allow me to upload an ipk (file type not allowed) and when (using Windows) I attempt to download one of the tar.gz files it renames them .tar.tar, or maybe that's Windows!

I think the next step is to get fixed up with a sourceforge account.

Do you use ipkg-build to create ipks? Is there any other way to create them? Maybe somebody has a very simple script.

Cheers and thanks for trying it as yours is my first feedback. Nice to know it actually works on somebody elses Zaurus

from the screen shots it looks a bit like the Sokoban game:

Robbo is more then Sokoban. You have to collect parts, kill/avoid enemies etc.. It was one of best 8bit Atari games in 90's in Poland.

I've built an ipk for the sharp roms on the 5xxx models (and it should 'but not tested' work on the Cxxx models also) if anyone would like to play this game on their Z. It's a quick little hacked up ipk because the link to the zaurus_source.tar.gz still doesn't work... but the ipk does. The package manager doesn't see it (not sure why and don't really care) but it installs from the terminal without any problems.

As root do:
ipkg install gnurobbo_0.57.01_arm.ipk
or use the -d switch to set destination

Edit: I almost forgot... you do have to restart qtopia to see the icon.

Please note it does require libSDL. For more info please see:
http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/ (http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/)

Thanks and credit go to TheGreenkKnight

Maybe Hrw can add this to OE?

Greg

Here it is: 'Removed ipk'

Please use the new ipk attached in post below.

Fortunecity is crap that's why. Got a sourceforge account now and am about to setup the project.

Ok so I've attached the source and the binary tarball for the complete game 0.57.02 (see attachments).

[a href=\"http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/]http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/[/url] has new screenshots and instructions. I've tested the links and they (currently) work.

Thanks for creating the ipk Greg. Post up how you hacked it together as I'd be interested. Would be nice if you could make a new one for 0.57.02 as this is basically the final complete version.

I wanted to ask what actually happens when you try to run this game on a VGA Zaurus? The screen resolution I request from SDL is 240x320, so do you get a tiny screen with big black borders or does it scale up? Also what about the keys? I want to now focus on getting it working across different Zaurii.

Regards.

Unfortunately I can't find a working ipkg-build.sh for the sharp roms. The only ones I have are for OZ and they won't work with the ipkg used by sharp.

Maybe someone will post a 'working' link to one, or attach one here?

Quick dirty ipk hack:
Extract your gnurobbo_xxx_zaurus_source.tar.gz to your home directory.
Cd to gnurobbo-0.57.02-zaurus/ipk
Move the 'control' file from the CONTROL directory to the ipk directory and delete the CONTROL directory.
Make or copy a debian-binary from another ipk and place in ipk directory.
Open a terminal and:
Code: [Select]
[greg@nfis greg]$ cd gnurobbo-0.57.02-zaurus/ipk
[greg@nfis ipk]$ ls
control  debian-binary  opt/
[greg@nfis ipk]$ tar czvf data.tar.gz ./opt
./opt/
./opt/QtPalmtop/
./opt/QtPalmtop/bin/
./opt/QtPalmtop/bin/gnurobbo
./opt/QtPalmtop/bin/rungnurobbo
./opt/QtPalmtop/share/
./opt/QtPalmtop/share/gnurobbo/
./opt/QtPalmtop/share/gnurobbo/ciphers-sl5x00.bmp
./opt/QtPalmtop/share/gnurobbo/icons.bmp
./opt/QtPalmtop/share/gnurobbo/levels.dat
./opt/QtPalmtop/share/gnurobbo/textsmall.bmp
./opt/QtPalmtop/apps/
./opt/QtPalmtop/apps/Games/
./opt/QtPalmtop/apps/Games/gnurobbo.desktop
./opt/QtPalmtop/pics/
./opt/QtPalmtop/pics/gnurobbo.png
[greg@nfis ipk]$ tar czvf control.tar.gz ./control
./control
[greg@nfis ipk]$ tar czvf gnurobbo_0.57.02-zaurus_arm.ipk ./data.tar.gz ./control.tar.gz ./debian-binary
./data.tar.gz
./control.tar.gz
./debian-binary
[greg@nfis ipk]$
Remove the ipk from the ipk directory and install on your Z 'with' the package manager. Yes, this one works... It installs and uninstalls cleanly with the package manager.

Would someone with a C-series please test and post what it looks like on your larger screen?

Thanks

Greg

Here it is:
Edit: Removed ipk. Please use the latest version in this thread or on TheGreenKnight's website.

Many many thanks Greg.

I've added your ipks to my website and credited you - http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/#s5 (http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/#s5)

Now I'm going to try and create an ipk from your post

I searched for the original author of the Linux port via Google as his email address was dead (2002). He's going to instate me as admin on the gnurobbo.sourceforge.net project.

Thanks

It's a nice project and I just read your todo-zaurus list... stylus support, additional levels and graphic sets sounds good.

Thanks

All I get on my C760 with Cacko ROM and the 0.57.02 ipkg is:
"QPaintDevice: Must construct a QApplication before a QPaintDevice
Aborted"
Unfortunately, I have no idea why this would happen here while it works for you.

That's sounds like a libSDL problem... either the wrong version of libSDL for the game, or the wrong rotation?

What version of libSDL do you have?

It sounds like one version of this game will not work on both resolutions?

It's the version in the Cacko feed, 1.2.5-slzaurus20041025-j. When I start it from the console, it doesn't matter if it's portrait or landscape, and from the launcher, it switches to 240x320 (as every app does when not told to do otherwise), but nothing happens, I guess it's the same error.

I think the resolution shouldn't matter, at least if it's run from the launcher and thus starts in 240x320, this sounds more like it's missing some initialisation.

Thanks to all who worked on this. I just tried the IPK and used the link to the SDL libraries from your website and both worked fine on my sl5500, running tKc ROM. The game seems to be working. My wife, who is the superior gamer, is testing it. She has never played it before, so is still learning the moves. If we find anything to report we will do so. Can't really afford a contribution, but I figured some feedback from users would be better than nothing.

update;
She is laughing and saying, "I got a key!" Her general concensus is great game, great graphics. She has RSD and limited use of her hands. Some games are hard to do for her, but this one is not a strain.

Observations;

When a KOPI alarm comes up, the game freezes and will not exit (had to do a soft reset).

I do not know much about the newer larger screened models but I take it (from your post) that SDL will scale up 240x320 resolutions to fit fullscreen but to which orientation I do not know (640x480 or 480x640?). Also what happens when you reorientate the screen between portrait and landscape? Qtopia apps readjust but does SDL?

Anyway I have specifically created a version now (not complete) that allows 640x480 or 480x640 resolutions. It would be nice if you could download the ipk and install it and let me know what happens. I am working on the screen drawing routines and there is currently a slight flicker so ignore that. Also DEBUG is defined so a lot of debugging info is dumped to the terminal so you can see what's going on with SDL.

Do this:-
1. Install ipk (see attached).
2. Open terminal and type 'gnurobbo -640x480' or 'gnurobbo -480x640' etc. 'gnurobbo' simply runs the game in 240x320.

Tell me what happens and dump the output please.

Also what if any other SDL games have you installed and played? Crimson Fields, Tower Toppler, XRick?

Regards.

I am happy that you your wife finds it fun  I ported it to the Zaurus from a Linux desktop version which is based on an old 80s Atari game.

The version of SDL that I use and linked to has always had some limitations regarding cooperating with Qtopia. Qtopia cuts in and the game loses the focus but still occupies all of the screen which makes it difficult to do anything. On my SL5500 running an SDL game whilst it's in the cradle and then pulling it out is not a good idea, as is not pressing the sync button  Basically, minimising the chances of Qtopia interfering is the key. I play SDL games then quit. I don't leave the device with them running then walk off. If you remember these things then eveything will be fine.

There are other versions of SDL available but I have yet to try them:-

There's libsdl-qpe, opie-libsdl, sdl and zaurus-libsdl!

I just tried with scummvm (from the Cacko feed), that works. Turning the screen is a bad idea since it puts the SDL app in the background without restoring the screen properly. Starting a new app fixed it as much as to make it usable again.

Nothing much yet with this installation (and I'll reinstall Cacko 1.23 again soon). But scummvm works, so I guess there's no problem with SDL.

Ok cybersphinx, if you could test this version for me please, I appreciate your help (see attachment).

I followed your links and eventually found the information I needed (on this site) and am confident it is now going to work for the C series

Open a terminal:

Type 'gnurobbo' to run it in it's default 240x320 mode.
Also try 'gnurobbo -640x480' and 'gnurobbo -480x640' please.

Let me know how you get on and post up the debug info from the terminal. The debug info will list all available modes for your model.

Regards.

OK, this version actually does something .

Starting from the console (in laptop mode, since there's only up and down keys in PDA mode) gives the following results:

"gnurobbo": The game runs in 240x320 in the middle of the screen, with white border.

"gnurobbo -640x480": Same, with black border.

"gnurobbo -480x640": A centered 480x480 area is black, with the game in the centre and white borders. The arrow keys are wrong (up -> right and so on).

The start screen flickers like hell, in the game it's hardly noticeable (I guess that's the drawing routines you mentioned). Output is always the same, except for the framerate (and possibly some QT/SDL messages that didn't get captured and which I copied separately):

So it works

At the moment the game is simply centred for larger resolutions. I am working on making the game area bigger.

Basically in 640x480 (default C series resoultion/orientation) the game works as it should.

SDL is adding the white borders. They appear because of selecting a resolution that doesn't exactly fit the current video mode. I bet if you changed the screen to portrait orientation then ran 480x640 the white borders would not exist.

I'll look into the start screen flicker.

Many thanks cybersphinx

[a href=\"http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/result.phtml?query=SDL&searchtype=package§ion=]http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/result.phtml...ackage§ion=[/url]

There's libsdl-qpe, opie-libsdl, sdl and zaurus-libsdl!

Thanks. It's by no means a show stopper. My wife's doesn't even have KOPI on her Z (I was testing it on mine first) for one thing, and a soft reset now & then is no big deal anyway. I kinda had something come up before I finished last post. I was going to report any bugs we found (that's why "observations" has only one thing listed on it), well that and we couldn't find anything else wrong. Great job and thanks again.

Version that works with the C Series is now available - http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/ (http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/thegreenknight/)

See website for nice screenshots of BIG screen

2005-12-03 TheGreenKnight <thegreenknight1500@hotmail.com>
* 0.57.03
* Now works on the C Series.
* The game area resizes depending on the Zaurus model.
* Alternative SL5X00 landscape orientation available via  command line option -320x240
* Level data no longer uses ' ' as a black_wall (now 'q').

Files attached.

Nice work!

I like the landscape mode option for certain levels, and you have increased overall performance by 16% on the 5600.

At 471 Mhz:

Frames = 79661  cycles = 21  fps = 3793

I would suggest you change your thread subject/title to include the C-xxx models, so the C-xxx owners see it.

Thanks

Yeah, that version works pretty well (and now you actually see where you're going).

Only two small problems I've noticed so far:
1. Redrawn stuff during the game flickers. I think it's more than before, but perhaps that's just because more is displayed.
2. When no lives are left, the start screen doesn't get drawn, only the text "Start", "Options", and the level name (or whatever comes after that).
Title: Gnu Robbo For Slxx00 And C Series
Post by: TheGreenKnight on December 05, 2005, 06:03:16 am
Greg: Cheers. I changed the way the various screens are redrawn and how much of them, so if you run the game and just stare at the intro screen and exit you will get huge fps because it only redraws the arrows and level text; same in options. I think now I shall just record fps in the game proper.

For me the landscape rotation on my 5500 is so much faster I have to use the in-game speed adjustment in options. It must be an SDL thing where it prefers that resolution.

cybersphinx: The issue whereby the intro screen doesn't get redrawn completely when Robbo dies from enemies is fixed now. I'll make a new ipk soon. You only need to show/hide options to refresh it or just enter/exit game.

Only the parts of the game area that have changed get redrawn, so I am not sure why this would cause flicker. I'll look into it though, see if there's anything noticeable. Could be because more stuff gets drawn now like you say.

I spent the weekend writing a tool that rips the levels out of the other Atari Robbo games and saves them in GNU Robbo format. Next release will have the ability to load additional level sets.

Regards.

I think you are correct about the SDL preferring the landscape resolution (that was fps = 3900). On my 5600 I also had to adjust the in-game speed to use... I could not make 1 step with 1 push of the button, but it would move 2 or 3 until I slowed it down.

I was so surprised by the high fps that I had to post it... but the 'played fps' also increased from 48 to 56 fps with your new binary at 398 MHz.

A question about the game;

My wife got up to level 15 then says that she is stuck. Is there something she's missng, or is this a bug? She goes from the big cell to the little cell, then to the 3rd little cell, then when you have to move the blocks there appears to be an inescapable trap. This is before you have access to the gun or the key, both which would make it escapable.

TheGreenKnight: Are your patches available somewhere? I will probably look at GNU Robbo soon (so it can appear in OZ, Familiar etc) so why I have to rediscover bugs etc?

Robbo was nice game on 8bit Ataris - it will be great to have it on Z.

Initially I was going to do a simple port but GNU Robbo Linux uses SDL-ttf, so I had to make more changes than I thought necessary. I have passed my source onto the original maintainer of the GNU Robbo project and he has made me admin so at some time I/we will include the work I have done on the original project so that you can build for PC or Zaurus via #define's.

At this moment in time I do not have time to do both especially since I am new to Open Source development and am not yet familiar with CVS or maintaining a Sourceforge account. Perhaps over Christmas I will have the luxury of being able do some research and combine things properly. It will be done because I know that GNU Robbo comes with Mandrake/Mandriva distros and Linspire so there are desktop users who would like to see a new version with extra levels etc.

My current objectives are:-
1. New levels (Robbo VIII, IX and X)
2. Stylus support
3. Merge changes into original project.
Then whatever other enhancements I can think of.

Regards.

After finding that some of the levels of this game were 'almost' too difficult to complete with a 5xxx model in the portrait mode I've made a little enhancement to help.

It's only an ipk that adds another icon for landscape. It uses the same icon with a different name (GNURobbo-Landscape), so you will have two GNURobbo icons after installing with different names. It starts the game in the landscape mode and you should go to options>game speed, and lower the speed about 2 positions for the same play speed as the potrait mode.

With the aid of this little enhancement I've completed all 52 levels on my Z... some in portrait and some in landscape, the two different icons makes it a bit easier!

Please note that this has only been tested with the latest gnurobbo_0.57.03_arm.ipk installed on the 5xxx models, and would really have no use on the Cxxx models.

Greg

Here it is:
Edit: Sorry the ipk has been removed for repairs over the weekend.

No, I'm refering to the new ipk that I made for the 5xxx model... so we can choose from portrait or landscape because we can't see as much of the game as you can on your Cxxxx.

It sounds like your in landscape and the game is trying to start in portrait?

Edit:
Are you using the latest ipk (0.57.03)? This sounds more like Exec in the icons desktop file can't find the rungnurobbo script?

Sorry but I don't have a Cxxxx to check it... maybe Cresho will check this out and fix it?

Try to start it with:
gnurobbo -640x480

if that works then simply edit your:
/opt/QtPalmtop/bin/rungnurobbo
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/bash
gnurobbo -640x480

@Cresho
Everything you need is in the gnurobbo_0.57.03_zaurus_source.tar.gz attached to a post in the previous page of this thread.

Thanks

I tried installing the " gnurobbo_l_0.57.03_landscape_arm.ipk " on my sl5500 (tKc ROM) and the installer gave me a message that the package was named improperly (forgot the exact wording) then, "do you want to ignore this error." I chose yes to ignore it as the alternative it offered looked like it would just overwrite the existing package. It installed and the icon is there, but it will not start from the icon or the command line. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong???

I 'guess' the tkc rom package manager did overwrite the existing package if it won't start from the command line? Open your package manager and see if you have both packages installed. If not, I'm sorry to tell you that you will have to reinstall gnurobbo.

I didn't think this would happen, but I guess I'll have to change more then one letter in the package name for some roms with older package managers? Sorry about that.

I have tested this on the 5xxx models with the latest 'Sharp' ROMs and have found no problems.

Thanks Meanie

I have also made a new ipk with this feature added for use with 5xxx and Cxxx 'or' Cxxxx models. I have tested it on the 5xxx, so would someone be so kind as to test it on a Cxxxx and let post here if it works or not?

I have repaired the landscape option ipk for use 'with' the gnurobbo ipk on the 5xxx models only. It installs properly with the latest 'Sharp' ROM package managers. I can't be sure it works with the older 'Sharp based roms' package managers, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

You must first install the gnurobbo ipk and then install the landscape option for it to work properly. This ipk only adds the option to use both portrait and landscape for the 5xxx by selecting one of two icons to start the game. You can not switch between the two on the same level of play while playing.

Greg

Here are the ipks:

Yes. This works. The program is launched now from Qtopia.

By the way, in both cases ( whether launched from console or Qtopia), initially nothing happens - I have to press enter for the game to start.

When started in console, after entering Gnurobbo I see only
Code: [Select]
480x640 in the console window. After pressing Enter the game starts.

Same thing in Qtopia: launching the game with the icon results in nothing. If I press immediately enter after launching it, it works and I see the start screen...

Either way: it works now, and I will try not to forget the Enter key.

Thank you all with the various comments / help!

I think I may have been less than clear in explaining. I chose NOT to use the suggested name the package manger gave, because it would have overwritten it (I think). So, everything is still the same as it was, levels and all. I got no further messages and it said it installed. It's just that the lanscape icon doesn't launch anything and the lanscape command someone posted earlier, ' gnurobbo - 320x240, or gnurobbo-320x240 (tried both) doesn't either. The default view still launches from both the icon and the command line. It's not a big thing, but was just trying to see if I could get the landsacape going (just to see if it would be better) and also thought you would like the feedback. Thanks again for a great game.

It sounds like you don’t have version .03 or .03-rc1? They should ‘both’ work with the new landscape option ipk.

I see the problem… TheGreenKnight has 3 different ipks in this thread with the same name and version number. Please use the last ipk listed. I will ask him to remove the others.

You can make a copy of your /home/zaurus/.gnurobborc to save your level of play.

The first one I tried was ' gnurobbo_l_0.57.03_landscape_arm.ipk ', but now I just tried
' gnurobbo_landscape_option_0.57.03_rc1_arm.ipk ' on my Z, which only had the original game so far, rather than my wife's so I wouldn't loose her levels. Same message, but even when I try to rename it to what it suggests, the package manager still recognizes it as if it was unchanged. My file manager sees it with the new name.

On second look at my wife's Z, it (gnurobbo_l_0.57.03_landscape_arm.ipk ) must have overwritten something (not sure what that something is, because as I stated earlier, everything still works, except I now have a dead icon). The landscape package doesn't show up in the uninstaller, but on mine with ' gnurobbo_landscape_option_0.57.03_rc1_arm.ipk ', it did, so I uninstalled it and everything works as before, but still no landscape. BTW, these are both the same ROM (tKc 1.0, with Maslovsky's kernal update).

Now I think I may have been less than clear in explaining… I’m referring to the gnurobbo_0.57.03-rc1_arm.ipk. You have to have that version to work with the landscape option with or without the icon.

If you can’t rotate the game from the command line you don’t have the new version of the ipk.

@chal

I see the problem… TheGreenKnight has 3 different ipks in this thread with the same name and version number. Please use the last ipk listed. I will ask him to remove the others.

You can make a copy of your /home/zaurus/.gnurobborc to save your level of play.

Thanks

Thanks. That was the problem.

PS It works from both icons now.

I've removed older attached ipks from my previous posts.

If there's any problem with the game not starting in the correct resolution for your model then let me know.

The game reads a file called /proc/deviceinfo/product which holds your model number (I got this from reading the Crimson Fields source) so it should start in the correct resolution for your device.

The additional desktop icon (for the SL5xxx) posted by Greg is a good idea as not everyone likes or indeed is familiar with the terminal.

Regards.

Version 0.57.40 now available (for all Zaurii)

ChangeLog:-

2005-12-26 TheGreenKnight
* 0.57.040
* Level sets are now accessible from the intro screen.
* Converted 4 remaining missing levels from the original.
* Converted all 15 rather pyschedelic levels from RobboVII.
* Converted 16 levels from RobboVIII comparable to original.
* Level set codes are stored in resource file and restored.
* 5 additional wall graphics based upon those in Atari Robbo.
* Game area resizing via options for VGA models.

If you've played through all the original 53 levels, there are 4 more available for that set. Just select the Original.dat level set (selected by default) and finish it; very much worth playing through.

Get it via my new website http://thunor.org.uk (http://thunor.org.uk)

Merry Christmas and regards.

P.S. Any problems let me know.
