Howdy.
I've been doing some searching in the forums (and FAQ and How-To docs), trying to figure out a good way to go for a car DC adapter/charger for a C1000.
It appears that for a normal wall-wart type charger, that the EA-70 and EA-72 are recommended, and that others might kill your battery.
It also appears that one wants a regulated 5.0V power supply, with a maximum current that is 1A or greater. People seem to think that 5.3 V is pushing it (although one person reported using 5.7 V, without problems.) If I do get a charger and put my multimeter too it, and read the voltage without load, then a good range is something like 4.75V to 5.25V? I presume that one can't fully trust the rating on the power adapter.
Also, I gather that the Z doesn't offer protection against an inverted or incorrect power supply, and if you plug the wrong thing in, you can watch it go up in smoke.
Is this all correct so far?
Now, back to a car adapter. PDAir.com, on their page for the Sharp Zaurus 1000/3x00, sell a USB Car Charger and a USB Travel Charger that you plug in to an appropriate outlet and can charge most PDAs via USB. The C1000 does not charge over USB, does it? (I thought I read something about this draining too much power and damaging USB Ports.)
I've also seen PSP power supplies referred to, usually with the disclaimer to make sure it is a genuine sony product and not something "made for PSP." Is this a really big concern? Surely it would fry PSPs if it is bad for the Zaurus, wouldn't it?
Lastly, I thought I read that some other PDAs have chargers that are compatable with the Z. If so, which ones?
Thank you,
Armagon
Edit: PS. I also read about using a DC Inverter. Is that a good general purpose solution?

Serial IO makes whats called a MHpower adapter that works great on the Zaurus it is located here http://www.streamlinecpus.com/store/produc...52&cat=3&page=2 (http://www.streamlinecpus.com/store/product.php?productid=52&cat=3&page=2)

I can vouch for the product that Stephen is pointing out. I've used it for a while now with both SL-5500's and SL-6000's. I've thrown a meter on it and scoped it and it's rock solid. For the price it just doesn't make much sense to gamble on anything else.

What did you see when you scoped this, please?
Voltage?
What does it say is it's max. current capacity?
It is both a dc-dc converter that drops 12-13.8VDC down to 5.x VDC but also regulates
the output?
Does it filter the output for noise?
Did you notice if it generates any significant RF noise?
(I worry about unintentional RF noise generators as I am an Amateur Radio operator.)
Thanks! doc

Is this charger for the 3100 also? Someone above mentioned the 5500 and 6000?
Thanks,
-
Hi all,
the car charger is for all known Zauri.
We have no informations about the components inside the
charger (but some curious customers disassembled them and
were satisfied with the parts they found inside ).
But the point is that we actually have about 800 units of them
sold and no complaints until now. So we can say that it's safe
to use the MHPower charger (if it wouldn't, we wouldn't sell it).

Does anyone know if the charging facilities that this (http://www.arkon.com/bluetoothgps.html#cm795) provides would be safe to use with a Zaurus C3100?
A company in the U.K. is very likely bringing out a Zaurus version of their in-car navigation software and I'd like something to hold the C3100. The above gadget also provides a speaker with amplification I believe.

Hi Barry,
Does anyone know if the charging facilities that this (http://www.arkon.com/bluetoothgps.html#cm795) provides would be safe to use with a Zaurus C3100?
the main problem here will be the cabling / connector part and that
these holders are for "classic" PDAs. As a SL-C series user you're
used to enjoy your VGA screen, not the QVGA PDA style.

Let us guess: It's http://www.directions.ltd.uk/ (http://www.directions.ltd.uk/), right ?
The Zaurus port of their navigation software will be available within
6 months. The only problem is, that they tell this since two years.
The reason for the delay (for what we know) is that it will be
bundled with Duke Nukem forever

I assume that you are talking about the power lead. It does, apparently, have a 5v barrel connector and I'm waiting to hear if it's the right diameter (4mm).

I don't understand the last part. What is Duke Nukem?
-
Barry,
I don't understand the last part. What is Duke Nukem?
that's simply a running gag. Duke Nukem is a classic game and
"Duke Nukem Forever" wins every year the vaporware award for
the most-awaited but never finished software.
Announced since 1997 : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Nukem_Forever (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Nukem_Forever)
So, if anything seem to be never finished or never available,
you say: It will come in bundle with Duke Nukem Forever.
For the car mounting part, check Brodit (http://www.brodit.com/?lang=E). They have a fine system
of universal PDA car mounts.

Right - got it. I am familiar with the term 'vapourware' but had not heard of 'Duke Nukem'

Thanks for the Brodit tip. They have some useful stuff but it all seems to be designed for specific models with no mention of Sharp or Zaurus. I have emailed them just to make sure so I'll see what they say. I do like the idea of the dashboard mounts.
