Title: Age And Gender Of Users?
Post by: loc4me on December 13, 2005, 08:50:02 pm
I have been wondering what many Zaurus users are like, gender and age specifically. I dont know if anyone else cares but i guess we will see by the number of people that vote. You dont have to reply but it would at least be nice if you would vote.

I did not know how to do it any other way so people will have to vote twice. Once for age and once for gender. Thanks.

Well guess that does not work well since people can only vote once.  I guess people can have there choice of telling age or gender and not both. haha.

- There's a thread around there somewhere that was started a long time ago, which has posts from about 40 users or so.  'Fraid I can't suggest what to search on, but it's there, and give you some idea of the cross-section of the forum...

Well as I don't believe I partook in  the old post and I'm in a bit of a maudlin mood I'll bite.

In my household we have 4 Zaurus users, 3 Females and with me bringing up the minority as the only male.
My daughter's use identical SL-5500's with 256mb SD cards, 1gb CF cards (flash only they don't need to have moving parts in them when they get knocked around inside of purses etc. so no Microdrives for THEM!) and D-Link DCF-660W's.
My wife has taken to occasionally knocking around with one of my SL-6000L's while chatting about the day in our bedroom etc. to surf the net with and check her email.  She uses a Sony Clie as her primary machine as she's a nurse and relies heavily on a Palm OS only program called Epocrates(and no it won't work on the emulators I tried. Well it used to about two years ago it did but then about 15 upgrades ago they screwed up any hope of emulator compatibility).
Then of course I use my SL-6000L and SL-C3100 daily for my mission critical apps such as Doom II (just started the Doom II wads, I'm working my way through while immersed in a nostalgia based high!)etc. As most of you know who actually know me well I spend most of my time pursuing elusive ways to brick my Z's that nobody has come up with yet.  I'm a true pioneer.

Cheers!,

Probably because you voted for your age first and you can only vote once? Or maybe it's rigged to suppress female voters?    (just a joke)

I'm 19 years old and male.
Sounds like a personal ad

I have, both a 5500 and a c1000, currently being fixed in japan.  Although most of my time spent with my z's involves fiddling with 'em to see how I can "improve" them...  I do use it for more constructive things...  Like surfing the forum .

It's amazing how much more experimental you become with your older models when you get a C1000.  I think I've flashed my 5500 5-10 time in the past week and taken it apart to see the potential for modding.  First time I took something electronic apart and it still functioned on its return to being complete.  Yay

Heh... I'm not that old, but my first computer came with just 4K of memory and the 4K memory expansion (giving  a whopping 8K) cost me £25, or about US$45. Given inflation, that's about £60 or US$90 in today's money. That's the equivalent of £10 per K, or £10000 per megabyte, or £10M per gigabyte, compared to about £70 per gigabyte at the moment. I literally built it with a soldering iron - even the keyboard was a kit of switches.

My first printer was an old teletype ASR33, printing at 10 chars per second.

Kids today, they don't know how lucky they are

Classic Gaussian distribution

26 - 35 The age when you got married, realised it isn't what you thought it would be and start buying expensive toys?

actually, I think it's a bit more complex than that why there's a peak of interest in computers, especially handhelds in over 35's...

You get married, have children.

Observations:
Children are curious and play with stuff and break it
Children get lots of toys
You don't get to go out much
There's competition for the TV, VCR, DVD, computer etc

Why handhelds?
easy to keep to yourself - don't have to share
easy to keep out of the hands of children unlike a fixed-position computer
you take them with you everywhere, rather than leave them at home for the kids to break
you can use them in bed easily
easy to hide from your partner, he/she probably won't realise how much they cost
if you want to write s/w there's not a huge number of people doing it, so easier to make an impact
they're cool

Many of the above points are also applicable for students whose accomodation might not be permanent or secure, a handheld can be ideal.

I was the only woman in my class at engineering school and we had to program with PUNCH cards - there were no PC, Pascal did not come into being until after I graduated.
The school bought the first Intel chip and I and my lab partners (all male) got stuck programming it with miniswitches no less at 4am, the only advantage was that there was no team scheduled at 5am so we got two hours to progam it in BINARY to light an 8 segment display oooohhhhhhh.....Now that was high tech!

I am the only Female developer at the company I work at tooo (and several others in the past as well)

I am just a trail blazer, so TombRaider - just look at it this way, NO lines in the ladies room at Tech Seminars!!

hm, my dad used punch cards when he was at uni and I remember playing with the variously coloured punch cards he didnt need anymore. i never figured out what those cards were until I went to high school and some teacher showed us a punch card in a text book and it clicked in my head, so that was what they were
anyway, have fun with your Zaurus. I just love mine. Allowed me to dump my dell and makes my travelling way way light. just a backpack with some clothes and off I go with my Z around my neck.
oh, did I mention I was female?

just kidding   , I am male.

There I don't have to worry. My kid is 34 and 3000 miles from here. The cats don't wanna play with my toy.

Oh, I'm 59 and male, BTW; and completely self-educated in the Wayz of the Software.  Flunked calculus back in the Jurassic and thus did not become an engineer.

yes, I am old enough to be your mom (agghh) as with most of the guys I work with...
Thankfully most of them think I am only about 42!
So when asked my age I counter with: Mental, Physical, Emotional Age - Pick one"

Oh the fun we had with punch card "chads" - yes we knew what they were before the Florida event. And punch cards make great bookmarks for notes (before the days of post-it notes too).
