Hello,
I just talked to the Softmaker support and they said, if demand would be high enough (i.e. as high as demand for TextMaker) they would port their (IMHO very good) spreadsheet application "PlanMaker" to the Zaurus, too.
So please, anyone who is interested in a PlanMaker for Zaurus version, drop them a line!
The email address is sales@softmaker.de
Simply let them know you're interested and you would buy a license.
To learn more about PlanMaker, look at http://www.softmaker.com/english/pm_en.htm (http://www.softmaker.com/english/pm_en.htm)

This sounds interesting, but the price is way off ( so is the price for Textmaker - if purchased directly from softmaker).
If they were to offer it for like $40 for both Textmaker and Planmaker together - then maybe...
For now I stay with Debian and Abiword for complex stuff and Hancom Word / Sheet for simple stuff...
-
Even I was put off by the price of Textmaker initially and stuck with Hancom.
But hancom often failed to format all my documents correctly and many a times the clinets would see some screweup up doc format file.
For simple documents and not too critical things - it goes by well, but not for complex formatting (even mildly complex).
That's when Textmaker really saved the day. And it was worth the money... at least it does a very good job on the Zaurus.
I would buy planmaker too and will certainly drop in that email.
Note : I don't use PDAXROM, so Abiword option is sadly no available to me.

I only wonder about the price differential. Softwmaker sells Textmaker for like $50. Others sell it for $25. How come? Softwmaker should also sell it for $25, and maybe for $40 for a bundle. That would then really rock!

The cheaper versions are probably older versions.
Softmaker also sell their older versions very cheaply sometimes (e.g. the full office suite for Windows for only 10 $).

It is not cheap, but at least Textmaker is definitely worth the money, if you need a good text processing software on the Zaurus.
Of course I agree that a discount for buyers of both would be good. ;-)

I have just registered my interest and shall fret over the price when the app is available.

Coincidentally, I was thinking about this just the other day. I even thought about writing them to ask about the possibility of porting PlanMaker. I ended-up not bothering because I noticed that TextMaker for the Z doesn't support OpenDocument (but it appeared that their desktop version does). Can anyone confirm this?
I've decided not to purchase any office SW in the future unless it supports ODF. If they want to port PlanMaker and add ODF support to it and TextMaker, I would be very interested. (I suppose I should tell them that then...

Let me put my 2 cents in about price. If you wait a bit, Softmaker has VERY good sales. I got Textmaker for like $20 during a sale. They usually have such sales several times a year.
My only problem is that now I use pdaXrom, and it has gnumeric and abiword. I bought Textmaker, and loved it, but abiword does the job well too.
If either could run on pdaXrom, then I'd probably still use Textmaker, and buy Planmaker though.
-
I emailed them indicating my interest and got a reply from a real live person:
They've got something else on the burner right now, but will look into a Z version of planmaker after that.

I'd be interested, but frankly they seem to have abandoned Text Maker, so I don't have high hopes for them releasing a new piece of software for the Z.
-
What do you they have abandoned Textmake ?
Maybe you have some inside information... cause last I saw, they were still selling Textmaker for Zaurus as also did contact me when i had a query to them...
Its too bad if they aboandon Textmaker because its really a good piece of software...
And frankly, I do care a lot about open standards and all that, but I woudn't oppose using a good piece of software like Textmaker even if they don't support Open document format (as yet), when it really does what it intends to, so well for my Zaurus and better than the rest.
Just my viewpoint.

Yes, they still sell it - I bought it just a couple of months ago. But the file I downloaded was named TextMaker_2002.ipk, which indicates that it's been a good long while since the company did some serious work on the app. And while I get updates on new beta releases of the Windows version all the time, I've have yet to see news about TextMaker for Linux, let alone the Zaurus version.

What makes me think that TextMaker has been abandened is that it still does not have proper support for VGA screens. The widget set used is either too big or too small.
Softmaker has acknowledged this on their forum but have said that they don't have time to fix the icon set. Also when I asked if the community could resize the icons for them the
reply (http://www.softmaker.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=960) was that they wouldn't let us try!
As an aside I also found my copy of TextMaker to be really slow when compared to AbiWord but YMMV.
