Hello,
I had to make a NAND flash some times ago. Now I would like to flash it to OZ but I cannot !!!
I put the three files on my CF card, reset, choose update, CF Card, Ok ... and my zaurus turns to black screen ... and never flash.
Does someone know something about that ?
Please help !!
... don't want to have a luxuary brick :-(
Thank you
Vicos
PS : The NAND put on my 5600 a "Kompany" OS.

I assume that you're sure the CF card is formatted FAT16 and that you've named the files correctly? I think you need the rootfs.jffs2 (for OZ3.5.3/4-RC) as well, making four files on your CF. Maybe not, but I always put it on there for good luck.
You might try flashing the original factory ROM back on, to see if the problem is your device or if there's some mistake in your OZ installation procedure.

I have reformatted using mkfs.msdos, then copied the files from www.openzaurus.org (download section) and verified MD5SUM which were good.
In fact wathever I put on my CF or SD card, as soon as I validate "Yes" in the validation screen of the flash page, my zaurus turns on a black screen and never do anything. I must reset again and ... boot on kompany image :-(
I have tried with Sharp software to flash via USB (and on windows xp) : same symptome :-(
Can you tell me where I can found the original factory ROM ?
Thank you for your help

I ran into a problem with this recently, perhaps it's the same one. When I formatted the card using mkfs.msdos, the card would not work for flashing on the Z. When I did an fdisk/format of the card from a windows machine, the card worked to flash from. You might try that.
I didn't delve deeply into this because the workaround was easy, but I'm guessing that either the OS type in the partition table was wrong (fixable with fdisk) or that the default format mkfs.msdos uses is one of the newer ones that won't work right, such as FAT32 (in which case there's probably some kind of switch to correct it).
I don't know where to get 5600 factory ROMs, but Google or someone else here can probably help you.

just trying : i'm still looking at a black screen.
Something must happen when I select "ok", and I can't figure out what it is.
Do you know something about the menu opend with "M+B" reset ?
Are there some options I can use here to make my Zaurus running normally ?

Using the official SHARP ROM, it's the same.
Must I consider my Zaurus out of service ?

New test : C+D hold down and reset : both lights mail and power are blinking ...
AAARRRGGHHH !!!!

Have you tried to use the format option in the update menu? If not, I would give that a try.
Here is a link to the sharp rom files and instructions:
http://www.myzaurus.com/ROMupdate6.asp (http://www.myzaurus.com/ROMupdate6.asp)
If you are still having problems after trying these, then I would suggest you do a search for a 5600 NAND (that is linked to here in several post) that is known to be good.
Here I already found it… it’s the SYST5600.DBK file linked on this page:

Hello,
I currently run this NAND image which contain an OS coming from there :
http://www.thekompany.com/home/ (http://www.thekompany.com/home/)
As my problem is the same from any media (CF, SD, USB) I think the problem is in my Zaurus. So was my interest in the "D+M+Reset" menu.
Can a piece of software be "broken" in the 5600 that interfere with the flash process ?

Yes, but a ‘known working NAND’ restore can fix it. I have known many users that made a bad NAND file… but I know that the one I have linked for you is OK.

I have downloaded the NAND, restored it ...
I still have a "thecompany" OS, and still cannot flash
Now I'm going to sleep ... cannot do anything else but pray for my Zaurus to come back !
Thank you for your help

Maybe you’re not doing it correctly?
Do you see a green progress bar that moves from left to right? When it is completed it will say OK above the bar.
Don’t give up yet!
Please read ‘very’ carefully and follow the instructions I’ve posted in this thread:

That's a good sign, actually! The blinking lights are a code to tell you that something was wrong with the CF card and it couldn't find all the files it needed to flash. That means that your Z is working well enough to at least do that much, so it probably isn't bricked.
I'm still suspicious of the CF card itself. Perhaps you have or can borrow/buy/steal one that has never been reformatted since it was purchased? That would certainly work, from a filesystem point of view. If that doesn't do it, then there's something wrong with the fileset you're putting on the card (missing files, wrong names, etc.)

Sorry, I could not find this last night...
If all else fails and you are still having problems flashing?
Here:

Good luck

HOW CAN I BELIEVE IT !!!
My Z is now operating Sharp OS :-)
It means it had been correctly flashed ... and perhaps will I be able to flash it with OZ soon (mmmmm ... maybe not this evening, I need to breath a little and enjoy little times :-)
THANK YOU !!!
It's sooooooooooooooooooooo cool !!

Hi all,
Got a similar problem with my 5500.
No battery light - no LEDs light on C+D+reset etc - no backlight fault, the Z humms slightly when plugged in - so power is getting in, tried 2 batteries.
None of the above options seem to work...any more suggestions?
cheers

I wouldn't exactly call that a cheery situation...
-
I know - it's damned annoying - just trying to be jolly tho!
-
Has anyone got any more suggestions? My situation has not changed - just tried all the above again with no luck!
I really would like to get my 5500 running again
cheers

I'm not sure that the sl5500 humming slightly is a good sign.
My sl5500 never hums, as far as I can tell, plugged in or not.
