Title: Zauri Or Zaurii?

Hello,
I am aware this is a little nitpicking, but I'd like to know what I miss here.

So many people refer to the plural of Zaurus as "Zaurii". but if you consider Zaurus to be a latin male noun, the plural would be "Zauri".

What's the secret behind "Zaurii"?

I wouldn't know, maybe the word zaurus has japanese roots ?

That's easy. None of us actually speak Latin, therefore we made it up and it stuck.

Maybe the plural is actually zaurii... and we are all wrong about the singular, which in truth is Zaurius?

I thought it was Zauri, for 2 and Zaurii if it was more than 2. I stoped my considerations there even though I wasn't sure. I was afraid I'd eventually have to use xkill to close my mind if i had to keep adding an i for each increase.

If we consider it as a 4th declension Latin noun rather than 2nd, we can have it the same as the singular - or, if you use the American Classical pronunciation and orthography I learned in high school, put a macron over the second syllable to form the plural.

singular

Nominative - zaurus
Genitive- zaurus
Dative - zaurui, zauru
Accusative - zaurum
Ablative - zauru
Locative zauri
Vocative zaurus

plural Plural

Nominative - zaurus
Genitive - zauruum
Dative - zauribus, (zaurubus)
Accusative - zaurus
Ablative - zauribus, (zaurubus)
Locative - zauribus, (zaurubus)
Vocative - zaurus

... at least <b>manus</b> works that way, and it means "hand".

My collegue at work calls it "Zausel" :-) This is kind of a German nickname for your honey, but not a very common one. Some people may call their dog this way.

I thought that we, as enthusiasts, are the Zuarii or is it Zuarites

I call mine Gimlet (which is a sharp tool)

A friend said I should start a website devoted to it and call it
www.site4Zauri.com  (say it really slow... site for sore eyes.. ), well at least we had a good laugh
