Title: I Finally Went Ahead...
Post by: silencer51 on December 28, 2005, 09:18:43 am
It seems I've got the Z flu!

A couple of months ago I bought a used 5500 off eBay... and I've been hooked ever since!

So I decided to make myself a nice Christmas present - Zaurus style!

I got a C1000 off handheld-linux.com. I placed the order today, hope to have it in my hands soon...

At first I wanted to get the C3100 but I didn't like two things: 1) the price 2) the idea of moving parts inside a PDA (easy to damage etc.)

So the C1000 was the perfect choice...

Can't wait for it to come!

What ROM do you suggest for it?

On the 5500 I've tried all of them and I now use OZ 3.5.4rc...

P.S. If it weren't for these forums I'd probably be stuck with an M$ bloated PPC...

It seems that they are out of stock for the C1000.

So I went ahead and ordered the C3100 (the price difference isn't that high, since I would have to shell money out for a 2gb sd card). ;-)

And if the moving part dies, you could replace it with a big CF flash card.

and what's much better: You don't have to look at your 2GB SD card
with an angry / frustrated expression on your face, while you realize
that all Zauris actually don't support SD cards > 1GB

Have fun with your new SL-C3100.

Thanks guys!

Trisoft, I didn't know about the 1GB limitation!  Thanks for letting me know...

I searched around a bit and I think I'm gonna flash Cacko's 1.23 ROM... What do you think?

Great Idea. It is the best ROM retaining sharp compatibility. I wish it was available for the C3000 but all we have is a beta version for now

As another new C1000 owner (Christmas present) I am wondering what ROM(s) all of the current C1000/3x00 owners prefer.  Stock Sharp ROM w/ Debian Pocket Workstation, Cacko, pdaXrom?  Other possibilities?  And also, why?  What are the advantages/disadvantages?

I would (ideally) like to have as much of a notebook-replacement Z as possible, without giving up the PDA functionality.  My desktop runs Suse Linux.

Thanks in advance!

Jason.

ok, this is how I see it and this is just my opinion

Sharp ROM = complete PDA feel (needs customisation to be useful)
Cacko = Sharp ROM minus Japanese plus bug fixes and customisation/enhancements
Sharp ROM/Cacko with PocketWorkstation = hybrid PDA  and X windows desktop
pdaXrom = complete X windows desktop
OpenZaurus = bleeding edge opensource linux system??? not sure here, haven't had time to try yet
OpenBSD = well, its BSD for the Zaurus I guess

Thanks for the input!      I hope you don't mind if I ask a few more questions...    If I don't need the Japanese part of the stock Sharp ROM, I am better off running Cacko for my PDA needs, correct?  Is there anything that pdaXrom can do that PocketWorkstation can't?  Is there a difference in performance between the two?

I don't think I'm ready to tackle BSD just yet.  I will have to look into OpenZaurus and see what it is about...

Thanks,

Jason.

from my experience,

if you don't need the japanese parts of the sharp rom, there is no question to move to the cacko rom.  It has bug fixes and there is a lite and a full version.  The only annoyance is the brightness bug (screen goes blank at lowest brightenss), but the pluses out weigh the minuses.

The pdaxrom is definitely faster than pocketworkstation.  The main reason for people to use pocketworkstation is because it is easier to use stock rom applications *and* X11 applications.

Thanks for your insight!      I'll be flashing to Cacko in the near future.  Your comment regarding pdaXrom's superior performance compared to pocketworkstation made me think a dual-boot setup might be in order, but after reading a few related threads, I don't think I want to go there!!

Happy New Year everyone! :-)

I was hoping my 3100 would arrive today, alas, nothing... :-(

It was shipped on Thursday the 29th of December from Germany via DHL/Deutsche Post Parcel Express...

In your experience, how long would the parcel take to arrive?

Don't anyone order from ChaseandCompany.net.  It took me 3 weeks exactly from the date I ordered and paid in full through PayPal before I received my Zaurus C1000!  And that was in the relatively slow month of November 2005.

Also, they open my support emails but don't respond to them. (I use MSGTAG software to detect when someone opens my emails - comes from having had a daughter in college who rarely answered my emails and I wanted to be sure she had READ mine.    )

Guys, I need your help!

The 3100 will be here on Monday, and I just realized I don't have any screen protectors for it!

On my 5500 I don't use one and the screen is scratch free, strange as it may sound. I don't use HWR though.

Since the 3100 cost me 5x the money, I feel inclined to use a screen protector.

What are your reccomendations?

I have heard good things about NuShield (I like the idea of a non-adhesive SP, but do they stay in place?) and pdascreenprotectors.com.

I went ahead and ordered a pack of NuShield protectors - somehow I like the idea of a non adhesive SP.

A friend of mine uses a Brando SP on his cellphone/pda and it really is great... ;-)

Another question:

I am now downloading the Cacko 1.23 rom for C3100.

From what I understand, there is an overclock utility included, allowing speeds of up to 624 MHz. Is this correct? Are there any problems with the implementation?

It's here! It's here! :-)

After 2 weeks its finally here! And its great...

I flashed it immediatelly with Cacko's ROM 1.23.

I'll try pdaXrom later.

Also, I bought a brando screen protector that I simply cannot apply correctly with no bubbles... I have used credit cards, rulers etc. but I simply cannot do it.

I think I'll go with a Nushield non adhesive SP.

Anyone know if they have protectors for the 3100? I ordered a 3-pack from them but they sent me the ones for the 5500...

man...ill tell you something.  I used three different brando screens just to get one of them on correctly.

What you are expiriencing is that you actually did not remove both covers from the screen protector. front and sticky side.  it was tough and i had to use my nails.

remove all lint first as much as possible.
also (not recommended)  i placed warm tiny drops of water on the zaurus screen and placed the sticky part (not sticky cuz its silicon based adhesive which never sticks like sticker but sticks goodn enough) on the the flat surface.  Water grabed the screen.  as i worked my way with circles from center to out, i soaked the excess water drops with a towel.  no drops and no problems.

just make sure the silicon based stick is on the screen and not up.  Or it will never stick.

hard hard hard

yeah, attaching the screen protector was a nightmare. i couldnt attach it without heaps of air bubbles or tiny particles stuck in it no matter how many times i tried
luckily, my mother's magic touch got it attached for me. i dont know how she did it, but she got it attached without air bubbles
i guess i am just hopeless with certain things

In the process of trying to attach the goddamned brando protectors I managed to destroy them both - thankfully my screen is still unmarked. I must have tried 100 times... I can't do it.

Has anyone bought protectors from NuShield for the 3100? When I ordered a pack they sent me protectors for the 5500... I think that on their site, when I select Zaurus C3100 as the model I wanna buy, it selects a generic pack that also fits the 5500 only...

I used the nushield screen protectors.  And you are right, they send you a generic one that 'mostly' fits.  It's just a little big and a bit of a struggle to squeeze in without some trimming, but there is no issue with bubbles since it doesn't really stick per say vs hover on top.  Once on though works good, helps a LOT on glare also.

Hmm... I ordered protectors for the 3100 specifically (I'm sure about that) and they sent me protectors that only fit the 5500 - they are too small in width for the 3100's screen. I think they do a great job protecting the screen but I'm reluctant to order from them again since it seems their protectors are smaller than they should be...

You guys just reminded me to buy some g2 screen protectors for my 3100.  I use them on my 6000 and I'm pretty satisfied with them.  They're not adhesive.  No bubble problems.  I had been using the generic fellowes protectors..
