I was hoping this release would be the first one to support the C3000 too. I hope the C3000 becomes officially supported in time for the 1.1.0 final release.

startx works and makes the bash window. exiting this bash window gives that:
loading /etc/sysconfig/keyboard/kernel.map
xaut:   error in locking authority file /home/root/.Xauthority
removing empty element from the valid list of fontpath

using 6k thanks

Just tested it in my SL-6000 and everything is fine.
In fact, I haven't found any difference with the previous, not being the nice messages at boot time.
The problem with "suspend" on CF (microdrive) continues. As I have my own "xmodmaprc" and copy itto /etc/X11/kb/ , nothing new with the keyboard.
All in all, it works very well, modifying some details.

Has anyone else had problems like rip's ?  I've got the ROM on a CF card ready to go...

Update: I couldn't wait.  I tried it on my C1000...  Works great.  Now all I need is a KDE install tutorial.

So may I ask how much space does KDE 3.5 take?  Is it possible to install it to the main memory?
Also would it be ok if installed in SD as it's slower than CF?
Thanks!

Thanks for the new release.  I've put it on my 860.

Is the Tasks Applet new?  It helps switch between active tasks, but only shows the tasks on the current desktop, and is only available on the first desktop, because the task bar still doesn't work on subesquent desktops (even though maximised windows leave a space for it).

The Package Manager has the default feed "cacko-unstable http://mirror1.pdaxrom.org/rc8/feed" (http://mirror1.pdaxrom.org/rc8/feed") which doesn't work.

I presume mounting the internal flash partitions with noatime is new.  Why does mount report /dev/mtdblock/3 as being mounted at /home and /mnt/user?  Is the advice in the "documentation" to partition at 50MB correct?

so that the gui package manager see /mnt/user as a partition.

Root partition size does not matter that much, just take care not to install everything in /.

KDE (never tried myself):
I suppose you need to install kde-base at least

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12702 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12702)

post#10:
just "startx" - to start the default window manager
Then in an "aterm" : "startkde"

post#4:
for start on default (that will init kde right) from clean console:

ln -sf /usr/lib/kde/bin/startkde ~/.xinitrc
startx

maybe have a look at post #15 also

Sorry for the delay in answering.
I have installed the packages for kdebase, kdepim and the libaries. So the whole KDE. I installed at the same time "octave" and "vim" and some other minors. I looked at space in SD before and after and it was around 250-300 Mb.
It runs very well althought some applications (konqueror, kate...), takes its time. In fact, konqueror no more than mozilla; around 45 sc. on the 6000 at 400 Mh. Once on the screen, it seems to me a little bit quicker.
My opinion is that it should be installed on SD. It takes a little while to install but afterwards everything is o.k.
Pgas, I don't recommend to launch the X's in the usual way and the run "startkde". I have tried as a variant but there is a mixture of windows from openbox or icewm and the K's.
I suggest for those using KDE and also Matchbox or Rox or any other to write a few short scripts to launch one or the   other. Someting like:

rm .xinitrc
ln -s /usr/bin/mbsession .xinitrc
startx

and call it "mbstart". Then: "chmod +x mbstart" and  "ln -s mbstart /usr/bin/mbstart"  You see the idea....
The same for "kdestart" and any other wanted.
I used "ksnapshot" to obtain the simple jpg attached.

Is there a problem with tar in beta1? I can't make new ipks for pdaXrom using the SDK image natively on the Z.

When I put the files into a temp dir and then create the CONTROL directory etc. as per http://www.pdaxrom.org/index.php?showid=35&menuid=1 (http://www.pdaxrom.org/index.php?showid=35&menuid=1)

I get the following error:
Code: [Select]
tar: --exclude=CONTROL: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

I've done this a number of times before and never a problem. It's not the directory thing, because I have it there. And it's not the SDK image thing, because I tried it with the older 3.4.4 image too from RC12 and it gives me the same error.

I can't make any ipks now...

Anyone know what the problem is?

Here worked fine, but this uses 180MB, more or less,

But I have some questions too!

- How to control LCD backlight?
- mb-applets works in kde, but we can have k-applets?
- Where is power-manager in kde, I cant find in control panel?
- How to use [Fn] key combs in kde 3.5?

Hey nice work again, there is a firefox 1.5 ipk too!

Is it safe to asume those with SL-C3100's are installing to the hard drive (KDE that is, not the basic rom)?  I just ordered mine as a upgrade to my old 860 because I knew bigger apps were on the horizon.

Thanks in advance

It seems that http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/Zaurus-...860/feed.tar.gz (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed.tar.gz)
does not contain the kde packages. They need to be downloaded separately from the feed folder.

Does this new pdaxrom release have-

xorg 7.0?

alsa sound drivers?

cups printing?

If not, thats my top 3 feature wishlist for pdaxrom (in no order).

Apps I'd most llike to see ported are audacity, zynaddsubfx, seq24 and specimen- combined you have a a full, portable, lightweight(ish) FOSS  music workstation, as well as all that other cool stuff you can already do with it. I will port them myself if no-one beats me to it as soon as pdaxrom goes stable on the C3000.

I can't wait to test KDE 3.5 out. I would've thought it would've been agonisingly slow to do anything more than run a console under KDE in only 64MB of RAM though.Anyone tell me how well konqueror, kword and k3b run? He he! k3b on a Zaurus!!

I hope things are OK with youTHC. I was greatly impressed with your xrom xmas beta, it was a great Chritmas present to see a full linux machine running in my palm like that!

I need to know..

1. How much ram still available after installing kde?
2. Do i need to enable swap for kde?

I just wanted to use kdepim...

Overall, the 1.1.0beta1 looks good. Firefox startup faster when started for the second time.
All the other WM works fine.

Problem: WindowMaker brighness function doesn't work...

Need to more testing...

Thank you, looking forward to 1.1.0 release...

On thursday, I got my C3100. On friday, the server went down. Luckily, another board member (adf) offered the akita rc12 zip. When the server was up again I downloaded the whole stuff - just to be sure - and the bandwidth probably dropped a little more because of that. Today I finally spent some time with it - and yes - all that effort that went into pdaXrom certainly is worth some money - as are all the efforts of the original package owners/holders. That is why I donated $20.
But I don't use the Z to make a living. It is "just" a gadget like so many before it. It will soon be replaced by something "better" ... probably a smart(voip)phone ...

I still have the bluetooth bluez,
load all four bluez packages, card detected, dun of phone detected with sdptools but ppp gets stuck and is unable to detect the dun address of my phone.  Bluetooth starts fine according to terminal.

If anyone wants to post a brief idiot guide for how they got bluetooth to connect to a phone it would be greatly appreciated.  I'll bet I'm missing something obvious.

In the meantime I'm stuck using cacko and xqt on my c700.  Cacko has no problem detecting my phone.  Miss using PDAXROM but broadband dillo bluetooth EVDO web surfing rocks  and I can only do it with cacko.

We hardly got any donations and banner clicks - don't get enough funds for normal pdaXrom development. Please click and donations.

Come on guys, please donate !
A monthly contribution would be great.
We had the same discussion not so long ago, where are all these promises about donations ?
Aren't you amazed by all the work the team is doing ? by the power, stability, the many packages available of the X rom ?

I'm wondering if these two handy features can be added to the current version:

1. A logging utility like 'script' that can make typescript of terminal session, or something like that, to make it easier to output anything on the terminal screen.  Or is it already doable by using some  available commands/scripts?

2. Mapping of the little screen swith(es) to suspend?
I'm just using a layman way to find out what the little switch(es) do on my C860.  Xev prints this when I used a little screw to push the one right under the swivel hinge (but the other one above the key "1" doesn't give anything):

Code: [Select]
KeyPress event, serial 23, synthetic NO, window 0xc00001,
 Â   root 0x33, subw 0x0, time 2229294461, (547,-271), root:(548,26),
 Â   state 0x0, keycode 110 (keysym 0x1008ff74, XF86RotateWindows), same_screen YES,
 Â   XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
 Â   XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
 Â   XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 23, synthetic NO, window 0xc00001,
 Â   root 0x33, subw 0x0, time 2229294461, (547,-271), root:(548,26),
 Â   state 0x0, keycode 110 (keysym 0x1008ff74, XF86RotateWindows), same_screen YES,
 Â   XLookupString gives 0 bytes:

KeyPress event, serial 25, synthetic NO, window 0xc00001,
 Â   root 0x33, subw 0x0, time 2229294861, (547,-271), root:(548,26),
 Â   state 0x0, keycode 110 (keysym 0x1008ff74, XF86RotateWindows), same_screen YES,
 Â   XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
 Â   XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:

KeyRelease event, serial 25, synthetic NO, window 0xc00001,
 Â   root 0x33, subw 0x0, time 2229294861, (547,-271), root:(548,26),
 Â   state 0x0, keycode 110 (keysym 0x1008ff74, XF86RotateWindows), same_screen YES,

So it seems this switch behaves just like other keys and is mappable, doesn't it?
Under X it is mapped to XF86RotateWindows, not suspend.  But what is the 'suspend' mapped to (not really the 'suspend' command in both X and sharp rom)? Checking the keymap for Sharp rom but no luck:
http://developer.ezaurus.com/sl_j/doc/soft...de_b500c700.pdf (http://developer.ezaurus.com/sl_j/doc/software/keycode_b500c700.pdf)
It would be a very welcome feature if the device can go suspend automatically upon folding up the screen, just like all we are enjoying in Sharp/Cacko.

Please correct me if I misunderstand the issues here.

Thanks!

The default behaviour in pdaxrom is to turn off the screen.

The following should do what you want:

Code: [Select]
# echo -e '#!/bin/sh \n xset dpms force off' > /etc/sysconfig/clamshell/closed.d/suspend.sh
# chmod +x /etc/sysconfig/clamshell/closed.d/suspend.sh

Thanks.  But it seems the screen always stays on even though it's closed/folded up, at least true of RC10-12 (which I've used).
Before trying your script and to play safe, can you tell me if the device will wake up when opening the screen?

works for me with my 860 and rc12.

If you want to simulate closing the screen, you have to press simulteaneously the little button under the hinge, and the one above the 1 and 2 keys.

add a line like:
Code: [Select]
key "XF86RotateWindows" chkhinge
in  /home/root/.icewm/keys

if you don't have the file "keys" there, you can copy /usr/share/icewm/keys
in /home/root/.icewm, and modify it as you like.

I just installed beta1 on my C1000. I was previously running RC12. With beta1, my D-Link wireless card no longer works, whereas it worked fine with RC12 (both dhcp/no essid and static ip/specific essid worked with RC12, neither works with beta1).

When you boot beta1 and login as root and attempt to type

ping ww.xx.yy.zz

when you type the periods, they are not echoed.

If the D-Link card is in the slot, startx will hang (it becomes unwedged if you remove the D-Link card).

Is anyone else successfully using a D-LInk card with beta1?

/Don Allen

PS I've contributed $50 to the project.

is there a simple way to start kde... something like "startkde" (which doen't start x) and not like "startkde --replace" (which leaves a lot o stuff running in the backgrounfd from the previous wm --- in ice the panel and rox are both going, for example)

IS there anything new since the thread on kde 3.4?

I link startkde to .xinitrc and run startx.
It can be necesary to do a "ldconfig" before and also stablish the swapon  as kde uses more ram.
Anyway, my feeling is that kde is a little bit "too much" for my 6000 althought for some uses it is o.k.

Hi,

Changelog ?

Between rc12 and beta1 only minimum packages changed.

Is posible only:

edit /etc/ipkg.conf
ipkg update
ipkg upgrade ?

Thx.

or how can I run qt-apps (like  "Bluetooth PAN Applet") under x?

Thanks for help

I seem to have experience the same issue as the previous RC.
When plugged in to AC, after waking my Z (860 in this case) from auto suspend, the screen (or the device?) will go off very quickly if I don't tap the screen or press other keys.  Once I was tapping the screen a few times quickly upon turning it on and the device freezes.
Any hint?

Sorry for my own confusion.  This should be an issue of KDE 3.5, as it is okay in  matchbox.

I just reverted my machine to RC12 and the D-Link card is working fine again. I note that you are running RC12, so I'm not surprised why you asked the question -- you and I have the same D-Link card. My advice is to stick with RC12; your wireless card will not work with beta1. Too bad, because beta1 definitely felt more responsive. Looking forward to beta2 ....

I've got the kapi that comes with kdepimpi 2.2.3 working with Beta1 (on my C760). You need to symlink all the libmicrokabc*.so files in /usr/lib/ to /opt/kdepimpi. Then it will work ok, but once you start it you need to press ALT+Tab to get the window to appear as it seems to start up minimised.

Hope this helps

Has anyone else noticed worse wifi performance with Beta1? I have a CF wifi card which under beta1 is identified as a Senao SL-2011CD. Under rc12 it showed up as a Farallon Skyline. Now using the hostap drivers the sensitivity is way way down. If I'm not next to the access point it barely detects it. Also power management no longer works. I've tried setting the sensitivity to maximum but it makes no difference.

Is there any way to revert to using the orinoco drivers? I'm using a C760.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

mjotad, I have had the smae problem with my SMC card.  RC12 delivered even throughput, but beta1 seems to go up and down and stall.  I have tried with other computers and had no problems, so its not a router/server issue.

pro:
upgrading from rc12 i can now use my bluetooth gps.. all the previous versions bt wouldn't allow me to connect unless i was really really lucky.. (and i'm not a very lucky person).. so now i can use bt (hopefully! need to test a little more..)!! =]

con:
beta1 has a terrible problem with suspending and never coming back.. i notice this especially when i leave a CF wifi card in.. however, i just did a cardctl eject removed it and hit suspend and the screen turned darker but hung.. so i think theres some problems with the suspend script.... i had to hard reset about 10 times in the past 10 minutes.. =(

with the suspend thing... ive noticed this, (pdax1.10beta1 was the first rom i tried on my new cl3100 so not sure if its different in other versions) .. the key to this problem that i've found out is making sure not the press the on/off button multiple times to try to suspend, at first i would try to unsuspend it and it woudlent come up for liek few secs, and i woudl try it again the screen woudl blink then baclighting would die but u could still see stuff.... Now i suspend/unsuspend with one sold press for each holding down for 2-3 sec

migth not work for u, but, this seems to be what i kept doing wrong

I'm investigating the issue...trying to get WPA-PSK like with Cacko.

I've already found some "omissions" in the file /etc/pcmcia/wireless so that it comes out with an error.
I've googled for the full version and i found it.
Then I've patched like described on wpa_supplicant homepage.

..but sadly it doesn't work.

If I test with a Socket CF Low Power Wlan card the wpa_supplicant runs (but the card doesn't support wpa...)

If I stick the D-Link DCF-660W the wpa_supplicant is not called...why???

The next step will be to change the card description in the files:
/etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf
/etc/pcmcia/config
/etc/pcmcia/hermes.conf

like they are in the Cacko ROM.

I'll let you know.

What works for me EVERYTIME: after the suspend doesnt work wait for about 5 seconds (if it doesnt work again: wait 10 or something) and then press the "home" button. this is everything and it should work everytime (on rc11 and rc12 it also worked).

for the next time you suspend: after the suspend do not press the on/off button again in the next few seconds. because while suspending the zaurus blackens the screen first and after some seconds REALLY suspends.

Sometimes my whole screen goes blank, and then if i hit a key (like shift) it comes up entirely white. Usually I can get it to come up properly by hitting ALT-Tab a few times.

Has anyone else seen this? I didn't have this with RC12, so I thought maybe it was a ROM problem.

If no one else sees it though, then I'll assume I mucked something up myself.

Twice now on my 3100 I have suspended it...and it wouldn't come back.  playing with the little button under the screen did it the trick. Very annoying til I saw the post that mentioned it.

I have beta1 installed on both my old C860 and the C3100 , I have the same suspend problem on the C3100. The C860 is ok. Dont know why, apart from the suspend problem it also seems that pdaXrom is more stable on C860 then on the C3100. I couldnt get Kismet to work on C3100 too even though i configure exactly the same
as the C860 and using the same Wifi CF card.

I must to say thank you for your great effort on working out this great Xrom.U r the best .
A problem confuse me form R10~Beta 1.My Z is SL-7500C.
My Z cannt be charged by AC/DC adapter, but the orange light is always lighte.
And the machine will use the power from the plugin power, instead of the battery. It means the AC/DC adapter work for the Z.

I wanna know what happen,If there any solution about this.
Or is it something about the hardware inside?

At one point there was talk about a pdaxrom 'lite' version where only the x-environment and config utilities would be included (basically everything but the default applications).

I understand the origional plan for pdaxrom was to compete with other roms and offer equivalent functionality, but the project has advanced so far beyond that I think many users would appreciate more of an operating system install package.  I don't use any of the default apps, or now with KDE available even the window manager.  Although these programs take little storage, having a 'clean' system is appealing.

Is this still being developed or has it been put to back burner?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, I tried & can't figure out where to place the swapon -a command in the init scripts on a 3100. Any suggestions? I've tried the pcmcia, and rc.sysinit.

Also, when I boot without a CF card or microdrive, the internal HD get set as hda instead of hdc. Is there anyway to modify the scripts so that they always are hdc, or that the CF is always hdc? That way my swap partition in fstab will be correct. (as a f/u, where the heck are the mount commands for the internal HD? I sure couldn't find them)

Thanks!

I placed mine in /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia. So at the end of "start", I have:
Code: [Select]
cardctl insert 1
sleep 1
mount -t vfat -o noatime /dev/hda3 /mnt/ide3
mount -t ext3 -o noatime /dev/hda5 /mnt/hd
swapon -a
ipkg-link mount /mnt/hd
if [ -f /home/root/zgcc-3.4.5.img ]; then

    mount -o loop /home/root/zgcc-3.4.5.img /opt/native/arm/3.4.5-xscale-softvfp
fi

And at the beginning of "stop" I have:
Code: [Select]
mount -d /opt/native/arm/3.4.5-xscale-softvfp
umount /mnt/ide3
umount /mnt/hd
swapoff -a
sleep 2

Season to taste.

Take a look at this thread (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16560). If my understanding is correct then /etc/pcmcia/ide.opts (if it works properly) should mount the HDD/CF at the correct /mnt points regardless of whether it is /dev/hda or /dev/hdc, because it uses the pcmcia slot position which is always 0 for the CF, and 1 for the microdrive. But sadly as I note in that thread it doesn't work properly (not for me at least).

When you say "at the end of  start" I'm assuming that you mean right before the
Code: [Select]
;; that ends that section. At least that's where I tried to insert the
Code: [Select]
cardctl insert 1
sleep 1
mount -a #to mount my swap partition
swapon -a
That produces a
Code: [Select]
ioctl():Device or resource busy
swapon: /dev/ hdc1: No such device
buring boot right after Start CF services

swapon: /dev/ hdc1: No such device

is that a space between /dev/ and hdc1? that might be your problem, but honestly, you should use swapon /dev/hd${PART}1 instead of relying on /etc/fstab since it isn't dynamic enough, or use sed to 'fix' it on each boot.

Hi,

I have some problems to get wifi working with 1.1.0beta1 and my wifi card Linksys WCF12.
I've tried this (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7151&st=0&p=44759&#) but no way

Thanks.

Can you tell me what's in your /etc/pcmcia/config, /etc/pcmcia/hermes.conf and /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf ?
Just the lines about Linksys WCF12 and "device" hostap (beginning of file), of course.

Thank you

I answer to myself :
with hostap driver, be sure to choose "Operation Mode : Managed" in Network Settings.
And then, Linksys WCF12 wifi card works "Out of the box"

With orinoco driver, it was "Operation Mode : Auto"

Does anyone know whether the kernel for the C-1000 & C-3100 has been significantly changed from RC12 to Beta 1.10? I'm also assuming that since the c-1000 kernel is made from C-3100 sources they are the same.

Evidently, there are some patches required to get the Orinico drivers working properly for the Socket WiFi cards in Kismet. They work fine for connecting to a network, but seem to not be able go into monitor mode. I've posted this bug and in the mean time have tried using a C-1000 RC12 kernel that was patched by cjb http://www.neonbox.org/zaurus/index.html (http://www.neonbox.org/zaurus/index.html) Unfortunately, it didn't work. My C-3100 would boot. Of course, I may have screwed up while moving the C-1000 kernel from the folder in tools.tar to the C-3100 folder, but the flash seem to go without error. Before I backup everything and try again I was hoping someone with more knowledge than I could weigh in on the issue.

Cheers,

Jerry

Ok,
Got pdaxrom working on my 6k, wifi works, startx worked, mostly all was good.  Then I ran ipkg update and ipkg upgrade, and now I can't start x.  startx results in the following message:
"Imageon_iniScreen()
:Bad file descriptor

Fatal server error:
no screens found

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining"

If someone can point me in the right direction on that (where to find logfiles, what file got tweaked, etc) I would be much obliged.  I tried a search, but probably didn't use the right terms, so if there is a thread somewhere, just point me in that direction with a "Silly Newbie" type comment.

Also, as an FYI, ipkg upgrade gets severly hosed when it sees that wget is outdated, since it first uninstalls wget, and then tries to wget the updated package.  That one was an easy fix, just d/l'd a copy of the updated wget to a CF card from my PC and installed off that, but still, its a kinda silly bug.

Quote
Hi,

Changelog ?

Between rc12 and beta1 only minimum packages changed.

Is posible only:

edit /etc/ipkg.conf
ipkg update
ipkg upgrade ?

Thx.

you need to update /etc/ipkg.conf
placing first http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/Zaurus-SL6000/ (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/Zaurus-SL6000/)
then http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/Zaurus-7x0-860/ (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/Zaurus-7x0-860/)

you don't need to upgrade as the feed changes only with a new release.

Now, you probably installed X with the driver for ati (760 etc..)
The easier way to fix this is probaly to reflash

I still have a problem where my Z goes to a blank white screen when it is left idle for a while. How do I get rid of this?

The worst part is this, if the Z suspends while this white screen is up, the Z goes to "sleep" such that I can't use it without "waking it up," but the screen does not turn off.

That is right, my Z is suspended with a white screen showing and the backlight on. The LED's even go off, just not the screen.

Needless to say, this doesn't do much for my batter life.

Thanks to Laze and pdaXrom team for this great ROM!

Was so pleased that I made my second PayPal donation to this project!

Just installed it to my 3100 last night and so far works great!

My Ambicom WiFi card and my Socket 10/100 Ethernet card both work.

Only issue I've had is shutting down my Z...exited from pdaXrom, then did 'shutdown' from command line, then tried to turn off Z with 'On/Off' switch, but nothing happens. Doesn't turn off.

Anyone have this problem?

Anything I can do about it besides removing battery?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Meanie,

Well, I just checked as follows:

#df
......
/dev/hda1 ....../mnt/ide
/dev/hda2 ....../mnt/ide2
/dev/hda3 ....../mnt/ide3

#cd /mnt/ide3
#ls
Documents   dict2    opt    usr
debroot        etc      pocketworkstation
dict1            home   swapfile

So it appears that it didn't change hdd3 content....

Not a bug in beta1 (which seems great so far as usual) but an older ipk which no longer works.

I really like nedit, particularly on pdaxrom and have it configured with syntax highlighting etc just how I want it. The nedit ipk from the stable feed has worked with every rc but doesn't seem to work any more with beta1.

I'm downloading the latest stable source for nedit to compile myself but was wondering if it might be possible to have it included in the release feed in future.

Many thanks for another great release. As soon as I can afford to, I will contribute some more $.

I fixed my nedit problem thanks to the following post (just in case anyone else is having the same problem)...

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6390&st=15 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6390&st=15)

Specifically,

export LD_PRELOAD=/lib/libgcc_s.so

did the trick.

Many thanks to DamienDixon, your very first post on the forums in September 2004  was my solution in February 2006!

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but I thought it would be simpler to reply to my original post.

Mark

Edit: I am an idiot... I was using nedit 5.4 from the stable feed instead of nedit 5.5 from the unstable feed! So many ipk's on my hd.... 5.5 is fine with beta 1.

Hi,

I have been trying the beta 1 on an SL-6000.  It seems the Z will hang
during a suspend, when the following actions are performed:

start wifi
ssh into the Z
exit the ssh session
stop WIFI
press the power button to suspend

The backlight will go off, but the contents of the screen stay frozen.  I
have to press reset and reboot to recover.

Hi,

Just an update, ssh is not the culprit, as my 6000 just froze during
a suspend, and I had not ssh'ed into the Z as it was a fresh reboot.
I had started WIFI and shut it down before the suspend froze the Z.

I've installed a lot of packages, and would rather not reflash and
start again, just to whether or not the suspend freeze issue only starts
to happen after a certain package is installed.

Anyway, are other 6000 users seeing these suspend freezes?

Well, I reflashed the 6000 two days ago, and I have not had any
suspend/resume problems yet. (No extra packages yet)

I do notice that the window manager (folks call it matchbox, but to me
it looks like the WM running is openbox) seems to restart when I resume
after many hours, but all is well after a few seconds, and my active windows
are all OK.

Is this the same thing I have with my 860, as described here?

I have reflashed back to rc10 and the problem does not occur. I find that the WM restarts, and some windows like rox and dillo survive, but others like firefox do not. It is really annoying, and I reflashed to the beta a few times, but it kept coming back. So I'm back to rc10 and I will try to increment the rom up until it re-occurs. I really want firefox to pick-up where it left-off after a wake-up.

If there is a better solution I would sure like to hear it.

As far as I know, this is the kludge to prevent the window manager hanging after the machine has been switched off for a while.  It is annoying, but better to do this than to have to reset the machine (or kill the window manager via ssh if you happen to have a server running and remote access!).

Beta2 has apparently fixed this problem, although I haven't tried it yet.

I tried Beta2 briefly. My Z would freeze while trying to access a text file on the SD card from SciTE. I need a Z that doesn't do flaky things at the moment so I went back to rc10, as I had no problems with it using that rom.

Sorry, I don't understand what this "kludge" is.  Is there some type of
"kludge code" somewhere (WM, X Server, something else?) that was
put in to circumvent some known problems with any (or perhaps all) window
managers when a Zaurus is suspended for a certain amount of time?

I remember posting about the noticed WM restart after along suspend, and at
the time I posted "everything is fine afterwards".  I never left Firefox running though,
just simple X clients, so most likely all would not have been fine.

In addition to wanting to know a little more about both the kludge and why it
was put in, I'm also very curious as to why Firefox and some other X clients fail.  I
think it might be helpful to invoke Firefox from an xterm, and capturing the
output, after resuming and a client termination occurs.  I install just about everything
to SD including Firefox, and perhaps the hang occurs due to the fact that
the SD isn't 100% usable immediately after a resume? (just a thought)

In the past, on a variety of *IX machines, I would often change window
managers on the fly.  But I would start X11 a little differently, such the X
Server would not terminate when the WM did.  I could then simply kill the
WM, and restart a different one at will.  I never encountered an X client that
would have problems with this.

Another thought that came to mind, is that if any system time setting is done on a
resume, that could be a factor causing a hang.  I figured I'd mention that also,
in case it rings a bell as something that might have been changed after RC10.

I have a feeling that this is indeed what caused the hang, and the kludge is to restart the window manager to avoid this situation.

Sorry to be so vague.

was put in [...]

I wonder too - I also have an SL6000 and have never experienced the problems that others here talk about with time being wrong or freezing on resume. I have removed the time set/read from the suspend and resume scripts as I use atd and that locks the rtc anyway. Clock is always perfectly on time (well, as close as a computer clock ever gets). It worked on RC10 and RC11, now on RC12 (yet to try beta1). Maybe its a model-specific problem?

I've read somewhere on this forum that restarting the WM is indeed the fix for the freeze problem. It only appears to apply to matchbox/openbox (whatever it is) though; other WMs just get straight back into it...

Beta 2 bug:

Sometimes (often? usually?) when the Z boots up, it freezes after the line:
"Start CF services:     [OK]"

It seems like it does this when there is no CF card in the slot. If there is a card in the slot I think it works fine.

I have a 760.

The only "fix" is to pull the plug and battery to make it reboot.

It did NOT do this with Beta1.

Thanks pgas, I'll be sure to keep my bluetooth card firmly plugged in then.   I usually do have it plugged in, so I wasn't sure at first why it would freeze at rare moments.

Does this also affect resume from suspend? It seems to, so I just want to confirm that it is the same "issue" that causes periodic "freeze on resume."

Another 1.1.0-beta2 issue.

Has anyone else noticed that the Z does not switch "power profiles" when unplugged? My screen does not dim, and it does not suspend after the "unplugged" time, it waits for the time listed for "plugged in" which I have set for pretty long.

(I did put in a bug report, but I find it is good to post here too to get feedback.)

I haven't used beta2, but the power management is handled by mb-applet-battery, see [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18138&st=0]this discussion[/url] for details.

Hi,

Has anyone come up with a solid workaround for the suspend freeze
on the SL-6000 with 1.1.0beta1?  Everything was fine for a couple
days after flashing, and now it will freeze on every suspend.  I am
using the default window manager, and the power button.

I think I had this working in the past, but I can't remember which scripts
I hacked, and how I hacked them.  I believe it was one of the apm scripts,
and/or taking an apm command out of some other script.

I hope someout out there with a 6000 has figured this out, if so PLEASE share!
It is *so* darn frustrating, and I think it's the only issue I have!

Thanks,  John

Is this a beta1 issue only? I am still using RC12 because it works fine for me, but have been meaning to update...

The one thing I have removed is all the hwclock and sltime stuff from the apm scripts because it slowed everything down, the clock is correct without it, and atd doesn't allow access to the RTC while running anyway.

What else is in your apm scripts? What about cards during suspend?

Hi,

I think I'm going to reflash (to ensure a stock setup again), and try removing the
110hwclock script from the both the the /etc/apm/suspend.d and /etc/apm/resume.d
directories.   Unfortunately the problem took a few days to surface, so I won't know right
away if I fixed it...

Does that sound like the most logical thing to do? Or are there more places?

Gee, I was not aware of sltime, thanks, I see the binary and a script under the
same name in /etc/apm/scripts.d/ but I only see a call to sltime in the
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit script.

Thanks, I'll report back in a few days if I manage to fix it by removing the calls to 110hwclock,

John

P.S. I forgot to mention, no CF cards, wifi/dhcpcd shutdown, and just an SD card inserted.

Post by: miskinis on June 22, 2006, 11:28:56 pm
Well, I just removed the 110hwclock file from both directories, and the SL-6000
did not freeze after 3 cycles of suspend/resume.

I did NOT reflash, so I can't guarantee that I did not delete or change
anything else earlier!

What do I need to install this on my new C700? It has old version of Cacko / Qtopia 1.5.4 on it.

I would like to install pdaXrom..

Does anyone have instructions? I have a 32mb CF card and will have a 1g SD after I take the 2G SD back that doesn't work in my Z.

I'm looking to install a version of linux that allows me to install perl, KDE, so on.

Is this what pdaXrom is?

Cheers,

Ok,

I grabbed what I thought was the correct pdaXrom-builder file. This was in the downloads and about 25mb I think.
It was a bz2 file..

http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/1.1.0beta...7.12.05.tar.bz2 (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/1.1.0beta1/pdaXrom-builder-20.49_27.12.05.tar.bz2)

Is this what I need? I untarred the file to my SD card and it looks like a linux file system. I didnt see the "3" files I needed to extract to the root of my card.

I have a C700 with Sharp/Cacko ROM and I'm wanting to get debian or something similar up and running.. With limited resource I would like to have a single install.

Any ideas?

Ok, so the link you gave me above will work with my c700?

For a little clarification-- after I reflash the images below.. what type of linux system will this be? Is it based of debian or some derivitive?

Not clear on if I can add packages like PERL and GTK2.0+??

Extract them and put these files on the SD card:

Pull plug & battery for 10 seconds to reset.

Put in SD card.
Put in battery and plug in.
Hold down OK while turning on.
Option 4.
Then SD (or CF if that is what you have I guess).
Then Y.

It shoudl start "Writing " lots of numbers!

Whatch it, when it says it is done and going to reboot, then HOLD OK down until the "pdaXrom emergency system" comes up.

You should see it "Erasing ..." with percent

then "Writing data to block ..." with lots of numbers. (Green LED flashes as it writes too, but the scrolling numbers are just as useful to know something is happening.)

Then at some point it finishes and starts booting.

The green LED is now your "Flash access" light, kind of light a hard drive light on a desktop. So you can tell it is working when the green LED is either dimly lit or flashing. This is useful since things seem to take their time to boot up, and leave you at odd places with no output.

I am now at # prompt!! Cool.

EDIT: no flicker problem once it is fully booted.

Now to see if I can make everything work just like before. Hmm, if I want it to work like before, why did I upgrade?
