wondering if i could take a generic 1800 mah (not the 5600, too expensive) and try to mod that with the 5500. I Hear the Zaurus will become a little thicker, but i dont really care about how it looks, i need the extra power. ANyone know of any generic brands that they had succeess with on their 5500?

I use an external battery pack for Sharp Zaurus PDAs that I bought on ebay for $6. 4 AA-size NiMH batteries run the Zaurus about 3 times as long as the stock battery.
-
I heard you could use the NP-120 FUJIFILM Battery.
-
I just look at the np-120 battery. It is listed as 11mm thick, whereas the Zaurus 5500 battery is 7.1mm. I wonder what\'s inside these battery packs? If it is a bunch of smaller cells, then the np-120 might work by disassembling it and wrapping the guts of it in electrical tape.

I found a reference to the NP-120 battery on the following site:
http://www.amondotech.com/index.asp?PageAc...PROD&ProdID=337 (http://www.amondotech.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=337)
It seems to indicate that the NP-120 is equivalent to two other battery models named DB-43 and D-LI7.
Information gathered from other sites give the following information for the NP-120 battery:
NP-120:
Dimensions: 53 x 35.3 x 11 mm
Capacity: 1800 mAh
Mass: 48g
I wonder if this would work in a Zaurus SL-C760. Its battery has the specifications:
EA-BL08:
DImensions: 53.1 x 35.3 x 7.1 mm
Capacity: 1700 mAh
Mass: 27.5g

probably could fit if you removed the plastic cover, beats buying another battery from sharp for $89

GET IT AT EBAY FOR 20 BUCKS IF YOU CAN FIND ONE. OTHERS COST AROUND 40-50

I got the Semsons Battery Extender ( http://www.semsons.com/batexwitusb.html (http://www.semsons.com/batexwitusb.html) ) when my 5500 battery started dying. I can get about 2-3 charges from 4 1800mAh NiMh AAs.
But since the 5500 battery is now on its last legs I ordered another from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...e&s=pc&n=507846 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000645V4/qid=1076672254//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl147/104-6346585-2915104?v=glance&s=pc&n=507846)
They\'re impossible to get hold of here in the UK, so I had to get it from the US and ship it via PIL Express (Parents-In-Law ) . The current exchange rate makes it a good deal for people in the UK/Europe with contacts in the US who can forward it on.

I got one of these Samsung Digimax battery packs from http://www.trisoft.de/batterypack2.htm (http://www.trisoft.de/batterypack2.htm) and I use this to keep my 5500 going on transatlantic flights so I can listen to my Ogg music collection. I have a Smartmedia CF adapter which allows me to use the cheaper 64Mb Smartmedia cards to carry several albums. I fit two CDs onto a 64 Mb card.

I use 2000mAH NiMH AAs in my battery pack. :)
Are batteries protected technology? Exclusive licensing? Protected territory? Export law? Terrorism! I wonder why amazon does not deliver overseas.
-
Amazon has a general policy of not shipping any electronics internationally, but are quite happy to ship region protected DVDs anywhere... It\'s silly if you ask me.

BAD IDEA!!!!
If you want to got this route, then electrical tape is not the way to go at all. What you need to do is get some proper shrink wrap for it. They sell it in electronic hobbiest stores, not sure where you would go. The store in my area is called Norvac Electronics.

Li-ion electrolyte has conduction layers that generate the voltage potential. This electrolyte resembles a plastic-like film that does not conduct electricity but allows the exchange of ions. Separating the layers would destroy the battery.
The Li-ion battery is packaged in the ‘pouch cell’, an inexpensive foil packaging. The electrical contacts consist of conductive foil tabs that are welded to the electrode and sealed to the pouch material.
These batteries have a chip that sets the charger to the correct charge algorithm and provides state-of-charge indications. You cannot maintain this integrity when disassembling the battery.

I was hoping that these battery packs were composed of seperate individual cells within the plastic housing, but I guess that\'s not the case.
I figured out what I\'m gonna do anyways. I\'m gonna put the larger battery in without the cover attached, use a bit of duct tape, and order one of those covertech or piel frama cases to keep it covered. The only other question then, is will the Z\'s charging curcuitry handel a larger capacity battery? It seems that it would, but just take longer to charge.

Here is a picture of lithium-ion cell showing how it produces 3.7 volts.

I just looked at pictures of the NP-120 on the web, and if the pictures were actually of the NP-120, then the polarity of the terminals is wrong.

i just got into minolta np200, battery for dimage xt, no detail specs, the width is the same with the height of sd card
once i saw homepage using battery for nokia 8310 as replacement, but need to change some wiring inside because the terminals are flipped back compare to sl5500

I was curious on the person who purchased from Sempsons. Why did you opt for the USB one, as opposed to the basic? Additional thing to note that particular device is on sale? for $16.99 while the basic battery extender is for $6.99. I asked them to adjust my order . Final thing to note when the Zaurus battery goes will the extender be useless?
-
I\'m in the UK and got the Semsons battery extender from www.shirtpocket.co.uk . At the time at least I think that was the only one they had. The cord stows away and the belt clip is handy for making me look like a Real Geek
