For me it's the solitare card game. If you could get the familar game ipatience to complile, that would be great.

(very simple attempt, but has worked for eng-ger, ger-eng and wiki .dz files)

Not xmms, but an x11 version of mplayer can be built (I use it). Not sure where you can download it mind you (as I'm not at work and can't put the files up for download atm). Anyone?

After having troubles with gpe-nmf I did a lot of changes and playing music does work now for me. Added the changes as bug to openembedded but didn't get any response yet.

As guitar player I often want to take my tabulatures with me. I own guitar-pro which is a low cost but very fine application (also running under wine). From there I got the idea to take my favorite songs to the zaurus. Guitar-pro can store the songs as bitmaps which can be viewed by an adapted gallery version:
- instead of slide show - automatic down scrolling
- scrolling control by a very simple config to ensure proper timings and allow jumps (for repeating, ...)
- adapted view window to show songs and song information
- reading song informations (writer, timings) from a song's config
Here's a quick view (Bach's: air on G string).
I've added my actual song list for trial to the archive ....

Hmm, it would be so cool if someone produced a powertab player for Linux... there is a powertab tools archive which has a powertab decode library in it I believe... the project is more aimed at taking powertab files into Lilypond though.

Portable.net compiles for the Zaurus but I can't find any compiled ipks.

I've got gpe-nmf from koens feed along with a whole heap of cool stuff:

warning, gpe-nmf seems to be very unstable and crashes frequently.
I managed to get mplayer working just by adding the opie feed and ipkg install -d sd mplayer

Maybe you can try the binary from my side (http://members.cheese.at/woody/zaurus/archives/) where I did a lot of corrections.
(I don't know why but for me only OSSINK works and not the default sink wj8ich may change the bahaviour, but would be interested what's the result there)

pungipungi, I haven't tried your binary on my poodle, but with the one from the test5 feed all I'm getting is a message box saying "unable to start playback". Here's all the output when started from the command line:

It uses gstreamer though, not mplayer (from the output at least).

Good point. I always thought that nmf was an mplayer front end, and didn't know what gstreamer was.

I searched around on the [a href=\"http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org]gstreamer homepage[/url], but couldn't find any references to that error.
The only reason I'm fighting with nmf is that I really need some sort of a music player to justify sticking with GPE (and I do want to stay with GPE). Didn't there used to be gxine in the feeds? I don't see it in the test5 feeds. I'm (almost) happy with just using mplayer in a terminal window, except that there doesn't seem to be a way to prevent the Z from sleeping (under the 2.4 kernel, that is).

Try this first to see if gstreamer works:

On my machine only ossink works. god knows why ....
I think default is esdsink for gpe-nmf
If that works than you gpe-nmf should work in principle
if only ossink works then give that a try:
NMF_SINK=osssink gpe-nmf
I would propose to use my binary (the sigsegv which was reported is already fixed ...) and my lib since you get the state of the player like:

You could alsp use mpd and gmpc or glurp to play music. I myself use mpd and ncmpc. I also have some shell scripts which I use with mpc to control mpd and also another script that I run when the hinge button is pressed in order to make the bl and all work (in kernel 2.4 with keylaunch, that is).

I took a look @ [a href=\"http://www.musicpd.org]MPD[/url]. Seems a bit overkill for what I need. I very rarely have network access when listening to music on my Z. I'll keep on working on trying pymp. thks

It might be overkill in terms of features, but it's very light on memory and CPU usage. It's fairly painless to setup as well. Need to edit /etc/mpd.conf with some basic settings (alsa or oss, /dir/where/the/music/is, that kind of thing.) The interfaces are a little more stable and usable than the gpe-nmf.
EDIT: I Just looked at pymp. Seems rather intestesting. Maybe I'll try and get that working to.

Let me know if you do . The only roadblock is that there doesn't seem to be an ipk availabe for python-pygtk. I pm'd mikeyl about it (he maintains the python-pygtk-dev package), but there's been no reply yet.

I made and posted ipks a while back, but got little interest. That thread is over here (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16677&hl=).
I'm pretty sure they should still work with current versions of GPE. If you're building GPE from OE, it would probably be best to compile them yourself to ensure they depend on the right versions of software. If there are any dependency or installation issues respond to that thread and I'll see what I can do about fixing them. Also, mpd needs an /etc/mpd.conf . Documentation on that can be found on the mpd website (http://www.musicpd.org). If people have questions, posting in my thread about mpd will get the fastest reponse, since I'm subscribed to that thread but not this one.

@koen: not sure what you mean by rules in opening post (didn't see any "rules" in the first post of this thread), nor how to add it to OE. I went to the OE bug tracking system, but that seems to be for bugs, obviously...

and bugtracker is also for sending misc new stuff - I do not use X11 on Z but maintain kdepimpi for Qt/e enviroments (currently OPIE only). I started work on kdepimpi/x11 but lacked time to finish it so added it into bugtracker so someone could finish work on it.

Are there any plans to continue with the port of kdepim to OZ/GPE? Gpe-calendar doesn't cut it for me (and probably not for lots of other people).
On a slightly unrelated note, is Opie being actively developed/maintained? The web site is quite outdated.

Unfortunatly the powertab decoder decodes only but the real effort lies in the graphic output of the music files.
At least the powertab editor runs without problems under wine on the desktop. There you have the possibility to export it to text or html which gives the possibility to view it on the zaurus.
I've tried it with html and it works. Unfortunately only firefox displays the html code correct.

Maybe the ascii tab viewer version of my gpe-gprviewer is the first step.
It gives the possibility to read ascii tabs and to scroll them in realtime.
Ascii tabs can be easily exported from most of the guitar editors (guitar pro, powertab, tabedit) or directly loaded from the internet archives ....
