Title: Need Input On Sl-5500

I'm determined to figure out how to use Linux better.  I've got Ubuntu at home, and just got this SL-5500.  I'm looking all over the net on how to get this thing working the way I would like it and am having  trouble trying to decipher some info.
--> First, I looks like there is an open source ROM as well as a closed source.  What are the major differences?
--> Second, how about the OS itself?  What am I "running"?  Is Qtopia the OS, or just my GUI?  I'm not really understanding it all, but I want to.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance.
