Title: Call For Donations For Poodle Hardware
Post by: fubeca on February 09, 2006, 01:31:50 pm
CoreDump has expressed (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=17191&st=17#) that full Hentges ROM support for the Poodle will cease because of a lack of hardware to test on. I hereby request donations for the purpose of purchasing an SL-5600 so CoreDump can continue to work his magic (that is if CoreDump is willing   ).

CoreDump, do you have a PayPal (or similar) account to accept donations? It sounds like there's already some folks lined up to donate.

If you're looking to build a contact list, then put me on it.

As well, we all should also be trying to source a 5600 while we're at it. Anybody that's willing to sell, pipe up!

Add me to the list of willing donors...(of money that is).

We might want to think about getting a 2nd one to give to HRW to help with the Core OZ Development, which is what the Hentges Images are built on...

I can test with my 5600.  I just put hentges on it by the way and everything seems perfect so far.

I might consider selling or giving it, but I like it too much!

While I feel honored by this thread, I have to tell you that I'd be the wrong person to recieve this donation.

What Poodle needs is someone able to debug the kernel and driver issues on this machine. My work is just polishing a working base system.

I'd recommend contacting hrw or mickeyl about this issue as they are better suited to decide who should recieve the PDA (ie: someone able and willing to debug kernel issues).

Resolution can be donating poodle to OpenEmbedded team so we will have 3rd project device (currently got C750 and SL-6000 from TuxAward).

Mickeyl is person who know where C750 is, SL-6000 currently is at Liam who work on ALSA for WMxxxx codecs at work (thanks to him we have ALSA on c7x0, cxx00 and tosa).

Machine will be used first to debug standard OZ images so they will be more usefull, then it should go to someone who will work on 2.6 kernel support for it (currently it should have SD/MMC, CF, USB working (and probably more) with small tweaks if not out-of-box).

I would pay some money (not much, 10 to 20 Euro) for a 2.6 kernel working on the poodle.

I"ve just unearthed my 5600 after it was lying unused in a closet for few years. I just started commuting by train so having it working again would make my time pass faster :-)

I've tried the open zaurus 3.5.3 and while i am really impressed by its looks the thing has way too many bugs on my zaurus (sound is wierd, it randomly goes to sleep and refuses to turn on the backllight again, freezes in random places and requires reboot)

that said i would love to test out the newest release and even chip in some cash to get the developers the zaurus they need... so.. what do i do now ? is there paypal account or something i could use ? :-)

Many people ask how to donate to OpenZaurus project. We decided to not keep one central account for it because arrangements are very complicated when you have a fluctuating group like the contributors to OpenZaurus. Not only do contributors come and go but they also contribute to varing degrees. And as soon as it comes to money, friendly relationships are endangered. In the end it’s not worth the hassle to split the money up. That’s why we settled on individual donations.

Who does what is pretty much open - it’s listed on the ChangeLogs, it’s listed in the ipkgs (MAINTAINER), on the READMEs and you see it in forums, mailing lists, IRC.

So, just donate to the people you think which are doing things that affect you.

There are two poodles for sale on ebay right now...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=5869565493 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5869565493)

So, who is willing to pitch in $20-$30 to get the OZ team up and running on poodle develpment?

Hi,

I'll happily contribute $30 towards a 5600 for the OZ team.

I could, if no one else is volunteering, organise the purchase:
If a few others will make firm promises to contribute, I will undertake to buy one from ebay & pass it on to HRW.

AFTER he's confirmed reciept of the machine, the promised amounts could be paid to my paypal account to offset the cost.

I would publish full details of amounts received on here.

It looks like they are going for around $180, so if five people & myself each pledge $30 it should about cover it....

Any contributers?

Robert Jenkins.

Robert: your post sounds good (one person who will maintain whole buying, sending, getting cash from others).

Too bad that we have so little amount of developers... After 3.5.4 release I would like to get month free of all OZ related things so I could check what was on FOSDEM, look at presentations from it, check what happened in 2.6/Zaurus land in last months etc..

Post by: grog on February 28, 2006, 10:54:51 am
Robert, you can count on my pledge for $30.

That said, HRW makes a VERY good point. We can all get gung ho & supply a 5600, but without a developer willing & able to donate his/her time to it, it doesn't do us much good. Being a programmer myself, I'd love to be able to throw my hat in the ring, but unfortunately with the job, an 11 month old @ home & evening courses coming up, there's no way I could make the time, as much as I'd LOVE to.

Not that we shouldn't get a 5600 into developer hands, but another thing we need is a call for another developer. Worth far more that his/her weight in gold!!

Post by: Mickeyl on February 28, 2006, 01:59:14 pm
A project poodle for team OZ would be a wise thing anyways. When I met Richard Purdie @ FOSDEM I could drag a statement out of him, that when he could get a Poodle in his hand for a couple of weeks, then he would be able to finish 2.6 support for it - which is really quite there, but the finishing touches need to be done with a machine in the hands. Others in the OZ team could check for one or the other thing to improve poodle support as well.

OK, that's three promised contributions (including me) in a day, I will go for the 5600 that's currently on ebay & hope there are one or two more contributions over the next few days.

I bought a 5600 myself a few months ago & hope to do some development or debugging once I get my head around the Bitbake system..

Oh well, tried for two 5600s so far but price passed $200 on each.

I'm not prepared to go beyond that until there are more promises of contributions, but I will keep trying up to that point as others appear on ebay.

10 Euros (should be a little more than 10$) from me.
Sorry, not more.
And perhaps this zaurus can go to Richard Purdie for some weeks first

I would lend my zaurus for some weeks. I'm not using it anymore and probably will not make much of it until there is a 2.6 kernel.

Someone just posted an item (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5879379490) on eBay that would be an ideal candidate for a dev machine (i.e. scuffs, no protective screen, etc.). BuyItNow is for $175 and includes shipping.

Is that the only poodle machine needed? I feel like we've got some momentum from users to get poodle better supported so we might as well take advantage.

If we don't need to purchase a poodle for development can we donate our money somewhere else where it would be more useful?

I agree. Even forging on & getting the second poodle might still not be a bad idea. Imagine what could be accomplished with TWO poodles in developers hands .

I think that second poodle wont be wasted - this will allow us to work on 2.6 kernel (RP) and work on getting 2.4 based images working better.

It would be best to get pxa250 & pxa255 so we could easily test anything - but even if we got poodles with same CPU I think that users will help if we will need to test something on their poodles

Good news.  I got my buddy to go down on price, to $160 (for the Z5600, Power Cable, and Dock), plus whatever it takes to ship it wherever.  We guess if they're in the US, then it shouldn't be more than $10.

BTW, my buddy and I are both located in Utah, USA.

Thanks Phil. That puts us over the top, assuming CubicleLord's buddy hasn't gotten distraught from the time lag & forsaken us? And assuming it's still available, would CubicleLord be willing to broker the deal? Say give us a paypal id & when all the cash has been received, then arrange for the Z to be shipped?

I've seen some posts on the OZ devel list about other poodles making themselves available. Maybe Hrw could give us an update here? As well (assuming CubicleLord agrees to be the broker) then maybe yuo could PM the address to send the Z out to?

A lot of questions. This will be great if this all comes together.

Thanks all for your support.

Yeah, my friend is still OK with selling his Zaurus.  I am OK with being the broker for the whole deal.  Here is my paypal address:  <Paypal address removed to prevent further donations>

I guess what I really need, is for Hrw to let us know where to ship it, and for everyone else deposit the money that you committed.  Once we have those two things we can get another 5600 for an OZ developer.  I'll post once a day to let everyone know where we're at.

Yeah, my friend is still OK with selling his Zaurus.  I am OK with being the broker for the whole deal.  Here is my paypal address:  jaire [at] preciant [dot] com

I guess what I really need, is for Hrw to let us know where to ship it, and for everyone else deposit the money that you committed.  Once we have those two things we can get another 5600 for an OZ developer.  I'll post once a day to let everyone know where we're at.[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=122918\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
My pledge is in the (e)mail . Thanks again, CubicleLord

Due to fact that work on OZ 3.5.4.x took too much of my time in last months I do not want to work on getting poodle better supported - prefer to spend this time with Ania (my fiancée). I got 3.5.4.1-alpha2 released yesterday after few days of fighting with nonworking image and now have an unwritten list of things todo with next releases. Adding work on not-so-good supported device into this will be overkill - I'm trying to decrease amount of time spent on OE/OZ.

Since RP - our kernel god   - already got a Poodle to work with, I'd be happy to polish up Poodle for OZ / GPE / Opie.

Hrw, thanx so much for your hard work on 3.5.4.x.  We totally understand that you need time with the family too    Heck, I have a family of my own to take care of (2 kids and 1 more on the way!)

CoreDump, you are my hero.  Does anyone, NOT want CoreDump to get our 5600?

My 10 € were only for supporting the kernel development.
So you have to delete me from the list.

I second that. My son will be 1 year old tomorrow, so I also understand the desire to work on the 'real world'

Might I suggest then that as Hrw pointed out our kernel developer IS getting a poodle after all, that your pledge go straight to the OZ kernel developer [a href=\"http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/developers/]Richard ‘RP’ Purdie[/url] (that's a link to where you can find a link straight to his paypal id, BTW ).

I alos want to thank everyone involved for making this happen. This is a great team effort. Thanks particularly to Cubiclelord for brokering the deal for us. Keep us updated. We'll all want to know when that poodle is in Coredump's hands!!  And thanks Hrw for posting that note on the OZ website. Shows what a team can do!

I sent it out to him awhile ago, but he messaged me the other day and said it is stuck in customs.  We're currently trying to get it out of customs, so that we can get some actual work done on it

I sent Coredump a receipt today, that will hopefully allow him to get it out of Customs.  Not sure why the international mail system needs to be so painful

Hey all

I just got the Poodle from customs. While the fact that it arrived there and not at my home was quite annyoing, the guys were at least very friendly there

It is in excellent condition. A big thank you from the OpenZaurus team to you guys, we will put it to good use.
