I'm having troubles installing pdaxrom, every time I try and install it I get "RO file system error while flashing".
I've tried checked the MD5's they are correct, tried two different SD cards and one CF card.
I have the 3100 and the Sharp ROM installed rigt now.
Anyone have any Ideas.

I had the same d@mn problem when I was trying to flash RC12! Very frustrating.
I couldn't find a solution anywhere and nothing I tried fixed it.... Until Beta1 came out. Then it installed without a hitch.
If you're trying to install RC12, try Beta1.
If you're trying Beta1, try RC12, then try Beta1 again.
Hope that helps.
-
I tried both RC12 and Beta1 both didnt work.
-
did you run the flash utilities to repartition your nand? you have unplug/reset/reboot, then to do this.... then unplug/reset/reboot and flash....the readme tells you how....
I had this problem too at first. It really pissed me off.... then I stooped to reading the documentation
-
Yes I did try and and it still didnt work.

Are the cards fat-formatted?
After repartitioning, did you let it really reboot, or did you press "OK" right away?
Just let it reboot until it stops, then battery out, back in and install pdaXrom.

Same problem on my C700.. I re-sized to 30MB, it rebooted into what appeared to be normal startup sequence (I saw kathrin in the header), had all sorts of errors during startup, logged in as root, shutdown.
Restart with 'ok' and flash, then "install new" and around 60% it gives a RO Filesystem: error
Followed all directions in DOC by the book as much as I could.

I thought it needed a minimum size of 32MB?

I too am having problems installing pdaXrom. This was supposed to be installed on my Sharp Zaurus SL-3200 shipped from Japan. Oops, they forgot. So now I'm trying to do this on my own. I guess this is probably a very stupid question, however I haven't found the answer anywhere.
In the install instructions pdaXrom states to copy over the three files:
* Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.
The download site:
* http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/1.1.0beta4/Zaurus-Cxx00/ (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/1.1.0beta4/Zaurus-Cxx00/)
However after downloading all the files for the zaurus-cxx00 and extracting them, the three files do not exist in any of them. Am I missing something completely. It seems like so many people have successfully installed pdaXrom, all the tutorials for installing any rom on the zaurus seems to require these three files. So where are these files?
I have tried for several days to get pdaXrom to install without success. I had installed Cacko though I would prefer to have pdaXrom instead.
Thanks in advance.

I thought beta4 need the custom uboot thingie ... the very reason why I'm cringing and not really trying it out ... yet!
And I still have not read any confirmation or replies to the question "Will the new uboot allow me to load Cacko or oz roms?" ... or will it be like the newer OpenSIMpad bootloader which will not load original Siemens rom. ie if you want to revert back to Sharp or Cacko or OZ rom, you need to flash back to the original bootloader?
-
"Will the new uboot allow me to load Cacko or oz roms?"
As of now... No... Cacko / OZ is built using the Stock Sharp Bootload, which in my opinion a more sensible boot loader due to all the other ROM's use the same... I dont know what Sash decided to switch over... maybe it is a compatiblity issue... I dont know...
You will need to have a NAND of anything rom using the Sharp Bootloader to switch back...

hmmm...
I've decided to try installing pdaXrom (Beta3) again, but am running up against this same problem.
I've tried 50, 53 and 121 sized partitions.
I've tried the >64MB fix.
I'm running out of ideas.
Do I need to factory restore my Zaurus? If so, can someone point me to some instructions so that I don't wreck my Zaurus?
-
trisoft has a nand backup and directions on how to use it. Try them?
-
Well, I could provide an early NAND backup of my C3100-pdaXrom installation.
(I make NAND backups periodically during lettting my pdaXrom grow, so I can always restore the last good status when something fails badly).
If you want it, let me know. I'll then upload it to my homepage and give you the (secret) URL.
You'd not need to do any repartitioning, just go into the D+M menu and do a NAND flash restore.
These are the steps I did before creating this NAND backup:
flash PDAXROM 1.1.0beta3 (root partition size 121MB after patching Sharp loader)
Enable Fn-1, 2 3 and 4:
in file /usr/X11R6/bin/startx
defaultserverargs= append option "-kb"
Replace /etc/ipkg.conf
Install package zaurus-sd-driver-update-cxxxx_1.0+tetsu_arm.ipk for SD cards > 1GB
then modify /etc/sdcontrol:
SD_MODULE=mmc_pxa to
SD_MODULE=sharp_mmcsd_m
reboot
Adapt look and feel, new wallpaper etc.
executed:
ipkg update
which reads in all the feeds.

Ya, and it worked, but I experienced the same problem when trying to flash to pdaXrom Beta3 after playing with the Trisoft NAND. (Nice job BTW Trisoft!)
I've been using a SD card to do my flashing but I tried a CF microdrive today, but I had the same problem.

That would be great. I would like to give it a try as a NAND restore using the Trisoft NAND worked for me.
Please PM me whenever you get a chance.
Thanks!

Hmmm... my Zaurus won't post now.
Seems like a NAND form a 3100 won't work on a 1000.
I'll have to do a Trisoft NAND restore and hoppefully it will caome back to life.
-
... Seems like a NAND form a 3100 won't work on a 1000. ...
Wow, I would never, ever, flash a BIOS or system from a different model of anything. Is
that supported? I highly doubt it, but I am curios.

I assumed that becasue there was so little difference between the units it wouldn't matter. But it appears I shouldn't have made that assumption.
I'm fearfull that I may have bricked my Zaurus.
When I plug in the power cable it doesn't register that it's getting power and I can't pull up the Diag Menu in order to do a NAND restore.
...did I just learn an expensive lesson?
help...?

Hi Antikx,
this prooves what I didn't want to believe myself but others suggested: That the 3100 and 1000 NAND backups are not interchangeable.
I am sorry to hear that you have troubles with the NAND restore. I hope you know that this was neither my intention nor did I even see that you have a C1000. Thought you have a 3100, too, otherwise I would have warned you.
On some kinds of PDAs it helps to let it sit for a while without any battery or AC. Maybe try this over night, then, as the first action, press D+M and insert the battery.
AFAIK the diag menu is NOT overwritten by a NAND restore, so it should still be there.
Can you get into the other boot options, such as OK+ON flash menu or D+B emergency system?

No worries man. I take full responsibilty for my actions. I'm just in too much of a rush these days.
The OK+ON and D+B don't seem to work.
I've tried leaving it without a batt and power for .5 hour but I'll try leaving it over nite.

My Zaurus lives...again. (in the almost words of Blood)
Lesson learned: Don't be a knuckle head and do a NAND restore from a model not akin to your own. And if your a knuckle head like me, use Function + D + M to get your rescue Diag Menu up to do a proper NAND restore.
Willing to: Share this obvious knowledge with the rest of the world.
Still seeking: A person ( using a C1000 ) with a fresh(ish) pdaxom beta 3 install that has a NAND backup they wanna share.
Reason: my pain in the a$$ problem won't let me install anything but beta 1 (what changed from Beta 1 that could posibly cause this?)

Antikx,
Sorry to hear about your troubles. If you can't source a NAND of beta3 for your 1000; let me know and I'll do fresh install on my 1000 and deliver it to you on one of my CF cards that I use for backup and restores. Unfortunately, the only NANDs I have at the moment is Cacko, Conics SharpROM and Hentges/OZ GPE since I haven't gotten around to beta3 yet. Just PM me if you want me to go ahead.

If you wouldn't mind that would be great. You can just burn it on a CD and I'll copy it over to my CF. PM me when you're ready and maybe we can grab a coffee at a Sal's or something.
If you run out of time or it's too much trouble, no worries, just let me know and I'll see if InSearchOf is able to help.

That works... I did it before for someone else... I believe I still have the base NAND.. but it it set to the default which is i believe 53mb root and the rest user space...
Let me know... I'm planning on going to beta4 again! this weekend... and it is sunday... so hopefully Holovector can hook you up...

Ok. I'm currently downloading the beta3 install zip. I hope to have something for you by the latest tomorrow. I'll keep you posted on my progress. When you say maximal do you mean 121MB for the root size with the fix loader option in the OESF install guide for beta1 and 3? If you could clarify that I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Yup, 121 MB
...and yes I believe the fix loader option you mentioned is required inorder to do a maximal root install. It's in the flash tools menu that you will see in the main flashing menu.
Thanks for your help!

I am glad your Zaurus is alive again!
But what is this Fn-D-M menu?
I tried it on my C3100 and it brings up the same menu as D+M, except that the title "SERVICE(x/3)" is written in black instead of red.
The menu seems to contain the same items.
Interesting, didn't know about this.
So the D+M menu is stored in flashable NAND and the Fn+D+M is stored in real ROM?

From what I've gathered it is an emergency Diag Menu that can't be over writen by a NAND restore. Interesting hey?

Hi,
I've the same problem as Antikx with my C1000. So after bricking it, I waited until the next morning and tried Fn-D-M (simply pushing D-M does not work). Nothing happens; the restore diaglogue doesn't show up. Just to check the CF, I tried it again with my C860. D-M worked instantly on the C860, but Fn-D-M doesn't work at all.
Is there any chance that there is a key combination for the restore command other than Fn-D-M?
Edit: The main problem seems to be that I cannot power up the C1000. Pushing OK before and while plugging in does not help.

Hmmm... strange.
Are you pressing Fn+D+M while the battery case is open, then tapping the rest button and then letting go of Fn+D+M. If I remember correctly the Zaurus needs to be plugged in while you're doing this.
-
Wow, this was really scary ... Leaving the Zaurus without battery for some days, pushing Fn-D-M, then hitting reset with the battery lock open really did the trick. Thank you, Antikx. My C1000 is back to life again ...
Lesson learned: Stay calm, take your time before writing off your Z -- and don't meddle with operating systems you don't really understand. "A cobbler should stick to his last."

Cool. Glad to hear you're up and running.
Staying calm is a good idea, I agree, but not meddling with an OS you don't understand... that's just no fun at all!
Myself and a few others have proved that you can't really brick a modern Zaurus, no matter how hard you try... so go nuts! (disclaimer: I'm not talking about hardware mods)
I'm still learnig to take NAND backups before messing around.
