I'm tempted since I have to re-flash anyways.

Does this Beta fix the suspend/resume problems? Is that what "kernel updated with cacko patches" means?

104 million megaherz?  wouldn't it be easier to just throw it in a fire?

seriously, though what do the new sd drivers do?

The new SD driver supposed to allow you to use 2GB SD cards and possiby the 4GB ones as well. I am still waiting for my new SD card to arrive to test this.

I just flashed beta2 on my akita. While I haven't used it much yet, I did test my wireless card, a D-Link Air DCF-660W that I reported as not working in beta1. It seems to work fine in beta2. I'll report again after I've used the new beta release more extensively, but so far looks like good work.

Flashed and waiting tonight to cross compile all GPE PIM stuff and new ver. of GPSDRIVE to test the new GTK+ packaging.
Suspend and resume seems to work better.
The only problem is the poor battery power, that for a PDA with internal HD is a very big hassle!!!
BYEZ!!

Does this mean you no longer need to sit around while it restarts the window manager after being switched off for a while?

What I really want to know is are the kde dev packages available for this new beta? Well, more to the point, as I'm really not that bothered about being able to compile my own pdaxrom KDE apps (although it would be very good) I just want a kword package for pdaxrom! Surely I'm not the only one wanting something better than HancomWord on the Z? Last time I tried pdaxrom (beta1 for C3000) Abiword was very buggy and damn slow so I'm hoping kword will be better (I WOULD NOT run it under KDE, of course- KDE + 64MB RAM = yuk! )

Yes it means this, i found it more responsive and faster in resuming.

I' m sorry danboid but i didn' t use KDE on Desktop because i find it too slow, i will sure not keep it on the Zauri.
I tried to install KDE with all the QT on the Zauri last month was terrifiing!! Too slow! I don' t really know how you can use it with a thing that u have to bring with yourself in car or while moving.
Just starting thunderbird is too slow for me, think that.

Yes, I know KDE would be unusable on a Z (unless, maybe, you're lucky enough to have a modded Z w/128MB RAM) but you don't need to run KDE to run KDE programs like kword, you just need the kdelibs installed. I was told the reason that kword hasn't been ported to pdaxrom yet is because the kde dev packages for the last beta never got released so I just want to know if this has changed and if KDE has been updated to 3.5.1?

I flashed today to the Beta 2 and found the orinoco drivers from my Socket WiFi card are working. dmesg shows a firmware error:
Code: [Select]
spectrum_cs 0.15rc2HEAD (Pavel Roskin , David Gibson , et al)
spectrum_cs: Cannot find firmware: symbol_sp24t_prim_fw
spectrum_cs: Firmware download failed
wlan0: failed to initialize firmware (err = -16)
spectrum_cs: register_netdev() failed

I may try and recompile the kernel as I did for last version but was hoping the orinoco drivers were already patched for the monitor mode issue...

Same here, my Symbol Spectrum24 CF LA4137 doesn't wotk under beta2, no light whatsoever.
Same dmesg message as you.
It worked under beta1 out of the box except in monitor mode.

OK, I found that simply copying the orinoco modules from Chris Bryden (http://www.neonbox.org/zaurus/index.html) fixes the problem.

Simply
Code: [Select]
# cd /
# tar xzvf /location-of-file/orinoco-modules.tar.gz
Then pop in your card and away you go.

To get the card to go into monitor mode for kismet, you'll need to
Code: [Select]
# iwconfig eth0 mode monitor
Cheers,
Jerry

You are my saviour

Thnak you so much

I confirm that it's faster to resume now, no more redrawings twice like I had with beta1 especially using ROX-desktop.

It'd be the same process just use the new pdaxrom builder in the beta2 feed & the C860 sources:linux-c860-20031107-rom1_10.tar.bz2 instead of the 3100, patches would be in the 860 directory of the new pdaXrom builder.
Good luck,

Sash,

There the latest mmc driver source code can be found? Does it work in PIO mode on PXA270-based Zaurii now? Any known problems?

that inside builder. For PXA270 PIO mode still not work - strange problem with reading from buffer - that freezin the status register during block transfer. In dma mode all works ok.

Installed 'kathrin-1.1.0beta2-akita' on my C3100 and so far works great with both my Ambicom WiFi card and my Socket ethernet card...

However, I'm a bit confused regarding what the

'PhyCORE-PXA270(info)
Rootfs for unpack to CF card: rootfs.tar.bz2
Kernel: zImage.bin'

listed below is for? Do I need to install this in addition to what I've already installed or is this optional or what?

Thanks for any input!

beta2 for 700 - 860 is online.
A little note:
It seems my zaurus freezes when no CF card is in the slot.
It also freezes when I do cardctl eject in the linux console (outside X)
It doesn't boot if no cf is in the slot.

So perhaps don't install it if you don't have a Cf that you are willing to leave in the slot

If you have one, please install and report. (Other than that it seems to work great)

PS: xfce autorotate added on http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib)
more howto's to come thanks to Chero and Nick, if you have some howtos or anything don't hesitate to contact me

I don't know, the problem seems to be related to the sd driver that  is not initialized
correctly when no cf card is in the slot.

The 3100 user might not notice the problem

Would the use of a wifi SD card be a possibility with these new SD/MMC drivers?  Or just bigger cards?  Typing in clamshell mode is a pain with a humongous CF wifi card sticking out the side.

Still looking for a good deal on 4GB SD cards so I can take one for a test drive.

I just installed it on my c3100 and here is what i noticed.

- suspend/resume sucks. after suspend, pressing hw button to wake the pda up sometimes flashes the desktop and thats it. it helped when i copied timezone file from my desktop. i think it would be great if collection of basic timezones was included and /etc/localtime already existed. but still it seems that now the clock goes to sleep when pda goes to sleep.

- wifi behaves erratically (i am using hostap driver and wpa_supplicant). once in a while when copying a big file it stalls, the card seems to lose connection and reacquire it. also it seems that it slows down (almost freezes) whole. i tried it with two wifi cards (linksys wcf12 and ambicom)

it seems that /var/log is on a flash partition. i am little afraid it may burn out the flash. is anyone else concerned about it? is it possible to move it to tmpfs somehow ? like tmp and /var/run. really i would prefer that c3100 system had root fs on microdrive and never used flash. is that possible? it seems c3000 operates this way.

This is a behavior I also saw about 3-4 years ago when I worked on my diploma thesis using an early version of the hostap driver (on a desktop though, not a Zaurus).

Have you tried another driver?

Hi :-)

now running Beta 2 ... first impression every thing works all right ... no problem booting without cf and sd card ... wifi cf card works ok.

some problems with smbmnt ... maybe my fault.

Later some more tests ... SD Card 2 GB first test recorgnized but could not mount it.

Many thanks to all developers

I have great faith in hostap driver. I used different versions on my notebook and my firewall/accesspoint in AP mode and I find it the best ever wireless driver for any card in linux.

Interesting thing. With RC12 (hostap 0.3.9+wpa_supplicant) 802.11x at office worked just fine with supplicant loaded before the driver. in Beta2 I had to modify script files so the supplicant is loaded after the driver. Otherwise it just cannot associate when loaded before and waiting for the interface to show up.

Now another problem. Everytime I reboot my time gets reset to like a year ago. Isnt there some RTC in the cpu (or on the board) that keeps current time?

So, is suspend/resume any better? As in faster?

I understand that you still cant suspend and resume immediatelly (results in screen turning on and off immediatelly)...

I've put it on my C1000 and the suspend/resume is as flakey as before if you press the on/off button too quickly.

You press the button and it suspends.
You press the button to bring it back and nothing seems to happen or it flashes up for a second and goes again.

But... if you wait for a little while before you press the button again, it seems to work as you would expect.

My card arrives today

All this talk about suspend/release... I never really had issues with it.  I press the power button, and the only thing that really does not repsond immediately is the backlight.  After a couple seconds, it kicks on and away I go.  Sometimes, there is a few second interval that the screen refreshes a few times, but that seems to only occur if I have left the unit in suspend for several days.

I mostly use the Menu to Suspend, but it works just like the power button on my 3100.  It is actually pretty much the reverse of when I tell it to leave suspend.  The backlight goes out, and a second or two later the screen itself finally goes blank.

I suppose it would be nice if it responded as rapidly as my Tungsten T3, but the only thing happening there when you press the power button is the screen is shutting off or turning on.  How it works now does not really bother me at all, though.

Reflashed to beta2 and let's just say it won't work .  The 512MB card I had in there was recognized, but I could not unmount it.  Under X, it just sat there.

So I thought to reboot the system.  Closed X, then told it to shutdown now.  well, after it got to "Unloading USB: it sat there for over 5 minutes.  So I pulled the battery

Power the unit back on, no SD card in the slot.  Nothing I do will get even the 512MB card to mount.

The applet under X just sits there, and when I try:

mount /dev/mmcda /mnt/card it just sits there
mount /dev/mmcda1 /mnt/card it just sits there
mount /dev/mmcda2 /mnt/card it just sits there

I thought I remember reading something in this thread about SD cards and cards in the slot on powerup for this release to test something, but it is late, I don't have time to reread the thread right now, I could be making it up anyway

i'll investiage further tomorrow.

the card is an a-data turbo 4GB from newegg.com

Good question.

In answer... I just learned something new

And walking up to the work building this morning, what was happening with the 512 card was that when I interupted the (presumed) hang while trying to mount the 4GB card, I could no longer mount the 512MB card.  If left alone, it auto-mounts whenever I insert the 512MB card, and umouts when I remove it.

I'll try it right now.

here's a fun thing.

After being suspended all night, it won't come back on.  I removed the battery, replaced it, and it still won't come back on

I can't even get into the service menu   Magical.

The power LED comes on to show the battery is being charged.  That is all.

No power plugged in, I remove the battery for several seconds (at least 5), put it back in, plug in power, hold Ok and press power.  Nothing.  Nothing but tears

Time for some OESF search engine queries

**edit**

after being plugged in for a few minutes, it turned on  The battery had nearly a full charge, wtf  oh well.

Now I can try it

I wonder if there is an issue with suspending somehow?  It is like instead of going into suspend, it stayed on all night.  Because my battery is drained, and under Beta1 I would leave it in suspend for days sometimes, and never had any issues.  This morning, I had to leave it plugged in for a few minutes like I said previously, and when I got back into X, the battery applet showed 60% power.  Then it plumetted, the backlight went off, and I had to plug it back in.

I used the menu to suspend, like I do 99% of the time.

But back to the 4GB card, I can't get it to recognize anything.  But I am willing to keep trying if anyone has any more suggestions.

My Tungsten T3 did not recognize the card, either, but I believe that is just because it is an older unit.  Supposedly w/ out some patch I did not get, it won't read cards larger than 256MB, though it read my 512 just fine.

I will try to pick up an SD card reader to see if windows XP can recognize it.

Windows may say it is unformatted becuase it cannot read it either.
In linux first you format then mount.

try
dd if=/dev/mmcda of=firstblk.bin count=1 bs=512
it should read first sector from the device
if it fails it means that the driver or slot cannot read from the card

then
Try running fdisk /dev/mmcda and see if it works
Create a partition table. Create fat32 or ext2 partition.
Then format it (mke2fs, mkdosfs)

thanks for the help

every command involving mmcda just sits there with a cursor forever, and w/ out a reset/battery removal, the SD slot is forever tied up and won't even recognize my tried and true 512MB card.

I do not think it is the card itself, because the latest gamepark will recognize it.

According to my home machine running Windows XP the card is formatted FAT32.  This is the only option I am given to format this card with as well.  It was the card reader, I needed to install a driver from the D that came with it before anything in the reader would be recognized, even on my XP machine.

Unrelated, I still don't know why it sits there forever when issuing the "shutdown now" command.
it gets to "Unloading USB modules:" and just sits there, blinking a cursor at me

Picked up a 160GB hard drive from best buy for $70, plan to shove it into a surprisingly good PC I have laying around and seeing if maybe ext2 or ext3 or something might work better for it.  I guess it is worth a shot.

i'm bored anyway, what else do I have to do tonight?  but it probably won't happen tonight, my internet connection is not the fastest... but at least it's better than ISDN or dial-up...   I still need the iso files

I feel very disappointed  with pdaXrom development team.

It seems no one would like to solve the CF umount-problem.

Another problem:
Is there someone using C750/7500C can tell me how to make a swapfile under beta2 and fix the cf problem.

swapon /mnt/PATH/.swap

PS: pdax works more than great on my 3100!!! Thnx

I think the problem was due to the sd slot being hung up after not recognizing the 4GB card.  After trynig the 4GB card, the 512MB card would not be recognized, either.

I always leave the 512MB card in the slot and never have issues.

Sorry to chime in, as I'm using cacko.
As to the 4GB SD card. Anything above 2GB needs to be formatted as FAT32 under windows.
May I suggest someone running pdaXrom, get a 2GB SD card and try it.
A 2GB card will actually be under 2GB in size, so it can be formatted as FAT under windows.
Maybe this would "work" better with the new SD driver.
Then you would know that the 1GB limit of Zaurus has been broken

I just joined this forum and after reading everything I can find out there about mounting a 2GB SD
card I still can't get mine to work. I'm running pdaXrom 1.1.0beta2 on my C760, and I can see the
card info in /proc/mmc/host0/card0 but there is no /dev/mmc or /dev/mmcda so I can't actually mount
the card. sdcontrol is looking for /dev/mmcd/disc0/part1. I have tried formating the disk with FAT, FAT32, ext2, ext3 with no changes.

Has anyone else run into this same problem?

I tried  it with no luck. Same thing as before. I can see the info but there is no device to mount it with. I tried my freinds 1GB card over lunch and it was able to mount it. So maybe
I'm just stuck using a 1GB card, but I thought that the new pdaXrom mmc driver was
supposed to allow use of 2GB cards.

I read in the other thread that you (Jon_J) are getting a 2GB card tomorrow. Let me know

I have a question...  I'm new to the Zaurus, so I'm still learning.   It sounds like the new SD driver is supposed to be included in the ROM package.  My 2GB card is not recognized, so I'd like to know if I mis-read something and I need to install the SD driver separately.

I flashed my SL-C1000 with beta2.  I just got my Ultra 2GB SD card yesterday, but it isn't recognized and if I try to manually mount it, the process seems to get stuck.  I can't even kill the process, so I end up resetting.

Does this sound like an issue with the driver?  Or does beta2 not have the new driver included in the package?  Or is this an issue with the card?  Card mounts fine on desktop, and I've tried reformatting it to ext2, but still no dice.

Hmmm...  I tried beta3, but I switched back to beta2 just before my SD card arrived in the mail.  It seemed like beta3 was draining my battery, and I thought I'd switch back until I could confirm if this was just my imagination or if there some bug in beta3.

Has anyone else noticed significantly reduced battery life with beta3?

IIRC, my battery had been at / near 100% the previous night.  I was trying to get my WiFi card to work and something I changed was causing problems, so I decided to reboot.  I was going to bed and didn't feel like waiting for the full reboot so that I could suspend, so I issued shutdown -h now and put the Z on the nightstand.  Didn't have a chance to use it the next day until I got home from work, but at that point the battery was so dead that I needed to swap it out in order to start up the Z.

Since I had just switched to beta3, I wasn't sure if it was the ROM causing the problem and I decided to play it safe and revert to beta2 for the moment.

Hi all,

Long, Long, Long time, since the post quoted....

Just got a 3100 after several years of no Zaurus...having fun with it so far....but it came with Symbol Spectrum24 card....so, does not work now...from reading various threads, I found orinoco-modules files referred to above.

Have put the files in place, but still no go with Symbol wifi card....

Have used cardctl, ifup, ifconfig, iwconfig commands, etc, but nothing so far has gotten card to wake up and be recognized.

Also, when doing commands, I see only 'lo' and 'irda' interfaces listed, no wlan0.....

So, I assume that this is part of problem too....

Can anyone help with getting wifi card working?

FWIW, I am able to use my Socket ethernet card, it works without doing anything....so, I know that CF card slot is OK....

Thanks for any and all help!

I'm sorry I can't really help you. I just wanted to say Hi because I was amazed to see some activity here.

I still use my SL-C1000 with a heavily customized pdaXii13 build (including Fluxbox 1.0 which I compiled myself) and I still love the system.

I have used the Ambicom as well as a LinkSys Wireless CF card with no issue though. Maybe pick one of these cheap, if you can't make your card work.

Good luck, and nice talking with you.

Mark
I'm sorry I can't really help you. I just wanted to say Hi because I was amazed to see some activity here.

I still use my SL-C1000 with a heavily customized pdaXii13 build (including Fluxbox 1.0 which I compiled myself) and I still love the system.

I have used the Ambicom as well as a LinkSys Wireless CF card with no issue though. Maybe pick one of these cheap, if you can't make your card work.

Good luck, and nice talking with you.

Hi there,

Thanks for your reply and sorry for my very late reply.....didn't see your reply until today.....

So, pdaXii13 still works OK for you?.....

Any issues with using it ?

The 3100 I got a while back came with weeXpc on it....a modified version of pdaXrom by Hermocom.....

Also, for fun got a 3200 and have played with OpenBSD on it....never used it before, but thought it would be good as it is still available for Zaurus. Only thing is that the packages for various programs need to be built, so that takes time on the Z as well as some packages have not built successfully yet.....

But having fun though.....
