Title: Endless Games With Amiga Emulator?
Post by: Seb on March 11, 2006, 07:31:09 am
i wonder if this could be a solution for "endless" games on zaurus. tons of games legally available for free WITHOUT having to BUILD each SINGLE one!

but: will zaurus (in my case c3100) be fast enough? has anyone already tried?

regards seb

There is a uae around.  Haven't heard of it working for a while, though.

I agree, it would be an excellent addition.

Hey - being an old Amiga lover i have played quite a lot with the amiga emulator - quite a lot of things runs okay. I particular like having the Workbench running - it actually works a quite good PDA OS :-) oohh and all the classic pinball games make good timewaste

Now that would make an interesting poll... how many forum members had an amiga? then look at members over 30......

I had a 500 and a 3000.  I know at least one other amigite on here.....  the z seems to have a similar appeal.

unfortunately, uae segfaults on my 3100 (beta1)  is there a new package? or some obvious thing I should know?

I experimented with the amiga emulator on both pdaxrom and xqt. runs pretty well...has trouble with frontier hehe...*little too slow but the main problem is the  cursor calibration that makes using the mouse almost impossible ......any solutions?

hm let's see.. quite a lot of things seem to work, problems with cursor calibration, limited speed..

-how severe is the speed problem?
--actionscrollers (stuff like deluxe galaga or silkworm)?
  --jumpnruns?
  --action adventures?
  --normal adventures?
--simulations (like ports of call, not like flight simulators or stuff)?

-can that cursor calibration thing be solved?

@ads: could you describe the observed problem in detail, please?

-and: does it have to be solved? i mean, there are gamepads.. many games don't require a mouse..

-who volunteers for building an ipk?

btw, yes, over thirty, no, not an amiga owner, but yes, i used to have a 64, got it on christmas '83, price was 635,- DM at that time plus 115,- DM for the tape recorder (datasette)..   a hell of a lot of money at that time..

The calibration problem is a general SDL problem - i think Sash is looking into it ASAP. But at the moment he is quite busy because of moving.

Had an A1000 and an A300T-040 that I used daily as recently until about 6-7 years ago.
Never tried messing with UAE, though, on the Z or otherwise. (Probably because I kept
the real thing for so long. :>) Over 30? Yup, that, too (I also had a Commodor SuperPET
back in the day....)

Runs okay with most old A500 games - demos and others that uses the special chips very hard is often slow - but with some frameskipping most things runs okay.

I used to have an Amiga B2000 (that's the one which comes with a "Bridgeboard" - essentially a "PC" on an expansion card - thus allowing you to run PC apps (mainly MS-DOS stuff in those days) at full speed (of 4.77MHz!)).

About 10 years ago the original Amiga power supply died and since Commodore had also died it was tough getting a replacement. So I followed some instructions in a newsgroup and modified a standard "PC" psu, but sadly when I connected it all up and switched it on there was a flash of light, a bang, and a puff of smoke from the hard disk(!) and that was the end of my Amiga

Timex 2048 (ZX Spectrum clone) I still have one running. Laser Squad FTW!
Atari 800XL (Now I have 1200XL with 1050 drive with Happy Warp).
I never had Amiga but now I have A1200 with Blizzard PPC and BVision at my dad's. He has to put it together and send it to me (and it is taking him like 3 years now).
I have 3 SGI Indys R5K (2 running Gentoo, one Irix) and boatload of parts, one SGI O2 R5K, one Sun Ultra 60 dual 360MHz (Gentoo/Sparc), one DEC Alpha Multia (waiting for Debian install)
And of course Zaurus C3100
And Fossil Wrist PDA running PalmOS 4 ;-)

Yes, I have compiled this and have it working fairly well.  Sound seems to destroy the emulation's speed tho, unfortunately.  However with the sound off it works well for things like speedball2, etc.

I've tried optimising with the GCC flags for arch, cpu and tune and it runs.  Even tried using multiplication tables rather than CPU instructions for multiplication to get sound working better, but to no avail.  Tried OSS sound vs SDL sound...  Still no real improvement.

I'll build an IPK if anyone's interested?
Nick.

zx81....16k ram pack....(not so impressive i hear you say?)...running x3 reunion.

in regards to amiga emulator....I managed to play "neuromancer" ....without too many problems, but unfortunately for sheer polish the snes emulator is head and shouldersabove anything I could achieve with tha amiga emulator...if the speed and the mouse could be sorted it`d be great to play "player manager' one of the best soccer management games ever.

OK, I'll package it up today  .  I've kept 5 different executables, each with different optimisations set - I think the full optimisation and SDL sound version is about the best.

From mailing Rich Drummond (e-uae author), he seems to think that we should be able to get sound working fine on the Zaurus, and he'll be trying to look into getting E-UAE running sweeter on the ARM sometime in the future

Well, I wouldn't say it's "decent", but on the other hand it works
I ought to mention that I've optimised it for the iwmmxt architecture (3000, 1000, 3100) so I'm not sure whether it'll work on the 750 - d'oh!

I'm 25, and I LOVED Amigas. I had an A500 and an A3000. I remember when those things blew away PCs. I recently looked at getting an A1200 just for the hell of it, but decided to get a C1000 instead

Hello

I compiled uae (not e-uae) amiga emulator for pdaxrom, tried to play some games for example Goblins2 and it is quite playable, but I don't know how to use stylus as mouse. Mouse cursor is allways out of point where I click, and I dont know how buttons works. I will try with USB mouse and I will see what can be done. I compiled also e-uae, it compiled OK but didnt worked. If someone has experiences with amiga emulation on Z let me know.

BTW: I didn't have real Amiga computer.  But there are many nice games that were also on PC and are unplayable with dosbox on Z.

If you want my uae binaries I can pack it and post.

hm.. i got it running, but the speed of a side-scrolling shooter drops to about one eighth of original amiga level (measured by simply looking at the "time" display in the game), even without sound

i compiled it without any special flags, just ./configure and make

any suggestions to improve speed? how can i optimise for arm? is optimisation advisable?

did i get it right? uae on zaurus is too slow for action games, and role playing and adventure games (where speed would be okay) don't really work because of mouse calibration problem?

If you are using real mouse (usb) it is far better. I tried on Goblins 2,3 games.
Maybe even older versions of uae will be faster. Or for some games is maybe worth to try hatari emuator. There are many games available for both platforms.
I also used just ./configue make. When I tried to enable specialities in ./configure I got segfaults or other errors.
There is also project xfellow but its pages are temporary unavailable. They say that fellow is a bit faster than uas although less compatible

Hello

I've tried same game (Goblins II) on Hatari and UAE.
Results without any overclocking

Without usb mouse:
Both unplayable (mouse is unsynced in hatari and also in uae).

With usb mouse:
UAE - mouse sync better but still I cannot reach right screenside with mouse pointer, but speed is so slow that almost unplayable. Goblins are lazy to walk :-)
E-UAE - no mouse pointer visible - unplayable
Hatari - fully playable with decent speed.

So as i read, hatari is based on UAE cpu emulation it is then clear that slowness of UAE is not in cpu emulation but somewhere else. (gfx, sound, i don't know).

I suggest play games which are availalble on both platforms in hatari and for other only amiga wait till someone speeds up UAE or try upcoming xfellow. Or wait for faster Z model :-))))

Next I will try some scrolling shooter which need speed gfx ... speed of Hatari seems to me 5-8 times better than UAE

last tme I tried hatari on 700... it was too slow to use.
stonx was faster, but wasn't there.

too bad the steem guys won't open heir source.  steem on a pc is
awesome.

I'm ok with the emulators now -- it's clear I/we have to wait for the
next step up in cpu performance.

Would love an Amiga package,

I had an A500 and A4000 (with delfina sound card, cybergraphics, SCSI)
The A4000 was a wonderful machine and I would love to revive some of my old sound files - don't think anything will quite emulate the digital feedback I could get running the sound cards in series though ;-)

Just under 30 by the way.

I think there's a newer release of e-uae available now - might be time to have a download, compile and play

From experimenting with WinUAE, it seems that running in lo-res can make a massive difference to the performance so it's time for some serious configuration fettling - it might just make it usable on the Zee.
