Congradulations!!! Already downloaded . One thing I noticed (already? I know), is that the mplayer ipk is in the x11 feed. Shouldn't that be in base?
Thanks for all the hard work.
(off to flashing...)

where do we download? I've looked around for a good ten minutes, but I couldn't find the images.

I can't get my Zaurus SL5500 working with new 3.5.4.
I have tried
gpe-image-3.5.4-collie.initrd.bin
zImage-64-0
but after leds light off and I performed full reset no orange led (it was still connected to adaptor) and after batery compartment lid has been added it didn't boot.
MD5 of files was ok, so I tried it one more times and now display turned on, logo was on them, but after 15min nothing other has happend.
Then I have tried also zImage-58-6 with same result (no live). Problem is that now i have problems to flash back to cacko.
Yesterday I have performed 2 flashing without any problem.
-
Can I take the occassion to ask if anyone would explain what the differences between OpenZaurus and pdaXrom are?
I've seen the feed features an X11 section and you use GPE, so is it basically like pdaXrom in the sense that you run X apps with no prob?
If so what is the benefit? A 2.6 kernel? Or is there more? Does it have floating point? If not, is it slower than pdaXrom?
I've searched for an introductory FAQ on OpenZ and perhaps a comparison between OZ and pdaXrom but haven't seen any. Are there any users who've used both and could compare?

OK, so sorry - it looks that this secondhand CF card begining to be little bit volatile. md5 after flashing is diffrent from beginning. Problem is that I have 5 CF card but only this one is usable (sorry - were usable) for flashing.
Do anyone have good experience with some new type of CF cards which I can still buy new for flashing?

On clamshells you get a 2.6 kernel, softfloat libraries, a possibility to use altboot and kexex, and choice of different environments.
The biggest difference is that on OZ 'ipkg install <something>' just works, you don't have to spend days to find out what dependencies that package needs. And having access to over 12 thousand ipkgs in the 3.5.4 feeds can't hurt either

I tried the enlightment c7x0 experimental image, and after reboot I just get a login prompt.
How do I start E17?
I noticed that:
1) even when I login using the root account, there's some timeout (abou 1 min or so) that takes me out of the session and prompt for login again
2) once logged, the screen does not scroll, so once the cursor is at the bottom, I had to type clear everytime.
I'm now trying the gpe image ....
-
Great news! :-)
Downloading now for my collie...
-
ok, when I ooked, the only mirror that had it was the Ewi mirror, and I could have sworn there were two opie images. Downloaded gpe now. Thank you
-
Cool! I'll give it a try on my poodle tonite.
-
First impressions:
-Suspend/resume works perfectly! :-)
-Liked the new GPE touches (information balloons etc.)
-Package manager has feeds correctly preconfigured
-Alt-boot is a great idea
-I think it's a little faster compared to the RC
I just installed it, so that's it for now... More later.

Great now I just have to wait for spitz (sl-3000) BTW Hrw I am jumping through all the hoops to get a moneybookers account for the sole reason to donate money to you. Paypal may not be the best but it was easier to give Mickey money since I already had paypal. You guys keep up the great work I hope to be installing the 2.6 kernel on my lil hack machine soon.

Yeah, I also like the look and feel of GPE. Looks very nice.
Even though, on my c750 I still notice that screen flickering sometimes .... any hints to solve it?

The benefit is that things in OZ are designed to work on a PDA where as things in pdaXrom are just crosscompiled. If you do want to run X app which have not been adapted for a PDA, you may have more luck with pdaXrom, it's like a linux notebook.
I hate to quote my own work but I wrote a [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Distributions]wiki page[/url] on this question.

Yes! gpe is a really nice pda environment (and getting noticeably better).
I just flashed 3.4.5 on my 6k. nice stuuf new browser is way cool. (I'll still need firefox on as a second, though)
The network setup gui works!
but.... is there a simple 1-button "connect" and "disconnect" sort of thing available? My wife uses the 6k a lot, and "su" "/sbin/ifup wlan0" is gonna be a problem for her.
Still, nice job guys! It is good to see a new and solid OZ.
-
The biggest difference is that on OZ 'ipkg install <something>' just works, you don't have to spend days to find out what dependencies that package needs.
Well, that's not quite right but anyway, for me main differences are:
- OZ is maintained in a more formal way by more people with a more open and better organization and a thus is more likely to be the distribution that will be here longer (ie if sashz is getting bored by pdaxrom.....)
- OZ provides (both opie and gpe) a uniform and complete desktop environement, while pdaxrom is more a compilation of existing apps and hacks. This requires a LOT of work, but a lot of work has been done on gpe, 3.5.3 was clearly of first port, 3.5.4 is working nicely and it's great to be able to use an application so set the fonts for all the system for instance.
Why do I use pdaxrom then? well pdaxrom was here before oz/gpe, and was arguably working better than the first oz/gpe releases, native and cross compilation was easier to get started with pdaxrom (the nice sdks, it might still be the case for the native sdk you just drop the sdk in the home directory and you're ready to compile)
Will I start to use OZ instead of pdaxrom? I don't know, but I'll be sure to check and try everything that's available and to use the one that suits me (of course as I have more inner knowledge of how pdaxrom works and as it's allready doing what I want, I might not find enough energy to switch)
I think that's great that we have choices and the possibility to try everything for free, just like I like the possibility to try and choose betwenn debian, mandriva, ubuntu, suse, gentoo..you name it..
I know that not everybody has time to try and decide by himself and we just want to know "what's the best" but there is no answer to this question because what we would like to know is "what's the best for me", hopefully with kexec and booting from a card it will more easier to try new things without breaking the previous installs.
-
Hey it runs great on my 5600! But I can't connect to wireless networks through wellenreiter any more?!? I thought it used to do that.

That's not true. OE (and thus OZ) has many 'unadapted' X apps like gimp, inkscape, abiword, gnumeric, firefox, enlightenment, xfce, gnuplot, gnome etc. If you want to install an extra X app, you just have to ask one of the OZ people to put it in the feeds, we do a lot of stuff on request
(As a side note: Previously a lot of people went like "Foo is missing, OZ sucks" before even asking for it to included, I'm glad that has changed)
-
when i tried installing the enlightment image, after reboot I was having a lot of 'no more space' for the startup scripts when creating configuration files and so.
gpe image installed without problems.
what should be the root partition size?
even i know screen flickering can be solved by tunning some parameters, how is it that when I run OZ I see the flickering and, without modifying anything apart from flashing, cacko runs OK?
thanks all for the great environment. I'm really looking forward to see my c750 running e17!!

BTW Hrw I am jumping through all the hoops to get a moneybookers account for the sole reason to donate money to you. Paypal may not be the best but it was easier to give Mickey money since I already had paypal.
Paypal does not support Poland - sorry.
I can create paypal account but it will be one way - I could send money via paypal but cannot get via paypal so I decided to not use it at all.

I flashed my Collie yesterday with the OPIE image. Worked like a charm. I had a brief (and not so good) experience with altboot on the previous RC (when it wasn't integrated), but now it's very easy to use it. The only thing that could be, IMHO, improved is the way previous configuration is remembered : altboot uses the previous choice (Normal, No GUI, SD or CF) by default, but it still asks for the rootfs image to use when several are available on - say - the SD card. Since it's easy to rename the unwanted images, it is not really blocking, though.
The feed is much easier to browse now, and I need no more "-force-depends" to install QT-based packages. I'm also glad to see updated things like mplayer.
Suspending/resuming works much better, now, and the only way I managed to freeze the Z was to keep the On/Off key pressed for more than ten seconds in a row.
Synchronisation between KDE and OPIE works nice, too.
All in one, this is by far the best OZ release, both in features and quality, I ever used. I'm more and more eager to test the SDK and contribute... Thanks for all, OZ devs!

This is what I want to know too.
I've not tried OZ yet as I have been awaiting 3.4.5.1 for spitz- soon as it gets released (within the next week!?) I'll flash it. One of my dads main uses of his Z is for browsing the web- he's not very techy and I don't think he'd be impressed with having to drop down to a shell and enter a few commands to connect/disconnect from wifi. What browser does GPE use by default? Can GPE be set up to start a graphical network connection tool when you open/close a browser?
Will I still be able to have a FAT32 partition that automatically gets mounted as a USB disc?
Is there a page showing all the packages in 3.5.4.x?
Congratulations to all involved in getting this latest release out- sounds like a very impressive feat!

release excitement must've overcame me
I forgot to ask
will I be able to get bvdd accellerated mplayer under 3.5.4.1 on a spitz under GPE
???

Oops, I've got a problem with this installation: every reboot resets time to 13 Mar 06 00:32.
SL5500, 64-0, opie. md5 sums are ok.
I've tried to boot from root and from sd card with the same result.
I didn't have such problems with previous installs (including test5).
What can I do with this problem?

I couldn't find abiword or gnumeric in that list- have they not been packaged for 3.5.4 yet or have I got to get them from elsewhere? I'm just about to try installing the new c3000 GPE image but it will be no use without those 2 packages unfortunately- they do run under OZ/GPE right?

Browsing the list at http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/tmp/hrw/t/oz3...ckages-list.txt (http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/tmp/hrw/t/oz354-packages-list.txt)
I noticed mysql4 and php4 packages. I didn't see anything for apache other than a perl/cgi module. Is apache available for OZ or will I have to track it down from some other source? Will installing Apache, MySQL, PHP on OZ/OPIE OZ/GPE provide a complete soultion for on the road web/php/sql development?

Awesomeness.
Loaded my 6000L up with the new OZ/GPE image (and I have to say GPE 2.7 is hella nice)! A job well done.

maybe some really simple automation stuff?
--install to <cf, sd, whatever> as an option when flashing? a simple opie/gpe dual flash option?
--an obvious "Start network services" sort of button on gpe? (I'm still doing it manually on the 6k)
a >2g sd driver?
I haven't touched OZ in a few versions, and haven't spent much time on this current gpe flash. It maybe that all this stuff is already child's play and I just haven't noticed yet.
-
Congrats on the new release, actually I'm facing a couple of problems.
I can't get my ambicom wi-fi working, it used to work on 3.5.2 now it doesn't respond any attempt to bring it up, although it gets recognized by the card manager.
The other thing is the altboot, how do I comply with the kernel it is asking for: embedix-3.5.4, (I used the fresh release for the flashing).
Thanks in advance.

haven't managed to get it to install, sry (I only spent a couple hours trying, though) Also kernel seems to be 2.4.18.
-
will it ask for the altboot password everytime it boots? Mostly just a curiosity. Thanks to all. I really like the GPE, I was previously using OPIE, but I'll stick w/ this.
-
altboot asks for password only on first boot - it use this pass only when someone try to boot directly into shell.
bonlebon: you NEED to flash 3.5.4 kernel - thats why you have this message and thats why you have problem with wifi card.

Is any work around to OE bug 538 (http://bugs.openembedded.org/show_bug.cgi?id=538) (top row of the built-in keyboard does not generate the correct keystrokes
when using them with the Fn key to type numbers on Tosa (SL-6000))?
This bug is real show stopper for OZ-3.5.4 on Tosa.

Its not altboot but one of our startup scripts. And if it say that you have embedix-021129 then YOU DO NOT HAVE correct kernel.
[span style=\'font-size:14pt;line-height:100%\']All problems from users with that message are going to be ignored - you NEED 3.5.4 rootfs + 3.5.4 kernel.[/span]

Zaurus SL-5500

bonlebon: problem is on your side - I flashed my collie few times with OZ 3.5.4 and it works.
Triple check does you have zImage on cf card when it comes to flashing. no zimage or ZIMAGE or zImage.bin but zImage

Hi,
I'm using 3.5.4 release, C860, Opie. Had to repartition after cacko, used 53MB as suggested.
Couple of questions. When I boot, it take me through the language/doctab/time config dialogue every time. At the end it gives me the following error
"out of space - unable to create startup files. Please free up some space before entering data".
This is probably related to my second issue; every time the machine awakes after suspend, or after inserting the cf card, I'm prompted to configure it, even though I do configure and save it each time. It doesn't seem to keep track of the card.
The font in opie-console is extremely small and very difficult to read. Any attempt to change the font size, font or colour scheme causes anything I type in to be double-spaced and indented to nearly the centre of the screen. terminal output is fine e.g. ls will look like
"root@c7x0:~# l s "
But the output from the command will be normal and in whatever font size I've specified. Can anyone else verify this? And the changes aren't saved if you close opie-console and then restart it. This doesn't happen on my 5500 running 3.5.4 release.
File manager won't allow me to copy files, however I can do this perfectly well in opie-console. I've been using file manager on the 5500 and it doesn't give me any trouble.
How do I add extra ttf fonts? I've moved a few into /usr/share/fonts/truetype but they aren't picked up by appearance etc. I ran /usr/sbin/update-qtttffontdir on the off chance that this performed some sort of import, but it gave me a segmentation fault. I'd say I've missed a step, in that the Deja font in /usr/share/fonts/truetype shows up with a question mark icon, whereas mine have blue cogs. Am I right in guessing that this means their magic number is different, or is it simply a rwx matter?
I haven't strayed from the standard setup, and I haven't installed any new software. I'm concerned that these problems mean I'll have to do a nand restore at some stage, so I haven't spent any time adding new packages etc. I reflashed a couple of times, but I'm still seeing these errors. Are they happening to everyone?
Thanks,
hQuin
-
hQuin: rm /home/root/Settings/* and reboot.
if you will still have those 'no space left' messages then do nand restore to have proper partition sizes and then flash oz
-
Hmmm, stranger and stranger.
/home/root/Settings is a dead link to /home/zaurus/Settings.
There is no /home/zaurus, and there is no 'zaurus' user in /etc/passwd.
I've checked this situation against the collie with 3.5.4 installed and the Settings folder exists, and it contains various .conf files. Incidentally, it holds the changes to the profiles in console, so that would tie in with the Settings folder being available to it.
I'm guessing now that one of 2 things is the case. Either I somehow have legacy data from the cacko install (or the pdaxrom install), or that the sequence in which I flashed to various oz images (opie, opie, e, gpe, opie) has ruptured my setup. These errors were present from first oz install, so I reckon it's cacko.
Any advice on where to go from here? rm -rf * and a reflash? I'd prefer not to do a nand restore out of mortal fear of bricking the machine.
Thanks,
hQuin
-
rm -rf /home/*
Opie should re-generate its own config files (he says ).
Si
-
Thank you Hrw, problem solved, cheers.
-
bonlebon: good to hear - enjoy OZ 3.5.4
-
Excellent, that's taken care of the display issues. Fonts, icons everything is a good size and settings are being saved. It took care of the issues in opie-console, too. Since I removed /home/* the console font is easily legible and doesn't indent when I change it. Thanks lads!
I'm still having the issue with file manager though. I can't copy from one pane to another; it still gives the "could not copy" error. Also, I can't change from one pane to another unless I specifically select 'view -> switch to view #'
If no-one else is reporting this issue, again it must be some legacy stuff from my previous installs. Is there anywhere else I can clean up? Looking at the output from 'mount' would suggest not i.e. the only non-root mount point is /home.
Thanks,
hQuin

Is any work around to OE bug 538 (http://bugs.openembedded.org/show_bug.cgi?id=538) (top row of the built-in keyboard does not generate the correct keystrokes
when using them with the Fn key to type numbers on Tosa (SL-6000))?
This bug is real show stopper for OZ-3.5.4 on Tosa.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=119550\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
fixed - do 'ipkg update;ipkg upgrade' and restart - add note in bugtracker if it works OK.

Thanks for the hard wotk OZ guys. Since yesterday, I flashed both OPIE and GPE on my collie. Both seem much better than the last release. Now on OPIE, I am trying to get KOPI working. It seems to install correctly to CF (40-24 zImage) other than some "failed to link messages, which also show up on other packages (portabase, hexatrolic) which run fine, but KOPI won't execute from the icon. I have installed;
libmicrokdelibs_2.2.5-r0_arm.ipk
libqpe1_1.2.1-r0_collie.ipk
libqte2_2.3.10-r27_collie.ipk
kopi-applet_2.2.5-r0_arm.ipk
kopi_2.2.5-r0_arm.ipk
(didn't see an icon ipk)
...in several different chronological orders (not sure if that makes a difference), but no go.
I try OZ on every new release hoping for some issues to be resolved and this one seems to be the one as the progs that did install run smooth and fast, but KOPI is a must for me. So far, I sync my KOPI data via file, between my other collie with tKc rom and both partions (XP/Mandrake) of my desktop. I'm sure it
must be possible with OPIE, as it is in the feed, but can't figure what I'm missing and/or doing wrong.
On GPE, I didn't have any sound. Should that be present from just installling, or does it require cofiguration?

I'm trying to actually have some *fun* with my Z (yah I know, it's ALL fun!! ) by installing a couple of games under GPE. Both plinciv & supertux install to my sd card ok, but they both give different errors:

3.5.3 opie on collie...64-0
SD card does not show in card manager, although it shows up in fdisk and as /media/card so maybe no big deal?

I got a few questions regarding OZ
1. does the fbvncserver in OPIE support the C3x00 models, ie is the keyboard mapped correctly for those models or has it only been recompiled?
2. is firefox and jamvm integrated, ie is there a java plugin for jamvm or any other java clones) that enables java applets in firefox?
3. since the openoffice port requires glibc 2.3 and OZ GPE is using 2.3, will openoffice install and run in OZ?
4. is it possible to install both OPIE and GPE and run them concurrently via a fb?, ie run one environment in the foreground while connecting to the other via a vnc client?
5. can I run my existing Sharp apps, ie the dictionary and translator applications on OPIE using compat libs?
6. can Chinese support be installed by simply installing the chinese locale and chinese fonts?
-
The file exists. Why can't the program find and/or load it?
Though the error message doesn't really indicate it, I wonder if it's expecting to find the file in a certain location (and not prepended with /media/card1/packages/) ?
Try running 'ipkg-link mount /media/card1/packages', then run the binary from its ipkg-linked location.

I found out that it is a problem with the sound file itself. Not sure what it is exactly (yet), but the games runs best using the following wrapper:
grog@grond[pts/1][/home/local/bin]$ cat supertux
#!/bin/sh
# a wrapper for supertux
exec /usr/bin/supertux --fullscreen --disable-sound
With no sound, of course , but it runs. I'll keep hacking at it to see if I can figure it out. thks
btw, in case anybody else wants, here's my desktop file as well:
grog@grond[pts/1][~/.applications]$ cat supertux.desktop

Hello, I have now OZ 3.5.4 OPIE image installed SD (altboot - real ext3 fs on SD), but I'm little bit disappointed by this distro. First I have problem with resolving names. I have zaurus in cradle and over USB there is successful link (I can ping IPs in internet). But I can't set my DNS servers:
root@znax:/# cat nameserver 213.46.172.36 > /etc/resolv.conf
-sh: cannot create /etc/resolv.conf: Input/output error
If I set DNS servers in gui (network settings) nothing happend. I still can't resolve names.
OK, so I entered openzaurus mirror to /etc/hosts and try to install some new packages. But another problem. If I try to run update I only get error 5. I have tried run that in console and I get this:
root@znax:/var/tmp# ipkg update

So what I'm doing wrog?
-
I have working zbedic on my c760 - just installed from feed.
-
It wasn't problem of zbedic package, but something wrong if I boot SD as / (3 in altboot).
Now I have tried just [1] in altboot (root on internal flash) and now all problems disapeared. Name resolving working (after seting that in gui for network) and also package manager working as expected. Now I'm installing lot of packages to SD card (but root on SD whould be better - you know if I achieve max allowed rewrite of SD card I can simply chang it, but if somethig went wrong with internal flash ...
That's why I would like to have as much as possible on SD card and internal flash rewite only if upgrading to newer OZ.
But it looks altboot with root fs on SD is not usable righ now. It's pitty.

[/QUOTE]Thanks to all OZ developers you`ve done a great job!
I really like the new OZ release.
But I have a litte "spooky" Problem.
First: my configuration
SL5500G collie flashed with bootstrap-image-3.5.4-collie.initrd.bin
then I installed opie-image-3.5.4-collie.rootfs.tar.gz in my 256MB
SD card via altboot option 5.
after that booting opie from SD card works fine.
And now the problem.
during startup "/etc/rcS.d/S37populate-volatile.sh" should amoung other things
make the following link "/etc/resolv.conf -> /var/run/resolv.conf"
it doesn`t. or better it creates something i don`t understand.
root@collie:~# cd /etc
root@collie:/etc# ls -la resolv.conf
ls: resolv.conf: Input/output error
root@collie:/etc# touch resolv.conf
root@collie:/etc# ls -la resolv.conf
ls: resolv.conf: Input/output error
root@collie:/etc# rm resolv.conf
rm: unable to stat `resolv.conf': Input/output error
root@collie:/etc# mv resolv.conf spooky
root@collie:/etc# ls -la spooky
ls: spooky: Input/output error
root@collie:/etc#
as you can see there is "something". after moving it away an running
"/etc/rcS.d/S37populate-volatile.sh" by hand the link is fine.
any comments?

I had downloaded & created a package for my own use of bl from here (http://people.bath.ac.uk/enpsgp/Zaurus/bl/), which I found as a reference from this post (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=17049&hl=ipaq-sleep#). It worked great on my poodle under GPE.
Now I just ran 'ipkg upgrade' & my package was replaced by the version from the base feed (http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.4//feed/base/bl_0.0cvs20060102-r0_arm.ipk). okay, except for the fact that it no longer works . I now get an error:
grog@grond[pts/0][~]$ bl 0
Unable to open /dev/touchscreen/0
/dev/touchscreen doesn't exist. Any ideas? thks

Ok, then please help me. I am on tosa and have tried the experimental altboot version. When booting either sd (1GB in 3 partitions, 2 ext2, one vfat)) or cf (one partition ext2) it hangs in the /dev/loop0-sequence. It cannot read the file-system. OZs are stored in the /boot-images/ folder and they are correctly recognized.
Normal boot into opie works fine.
Thank you in advance for advice

Ok, got that. Be patient with me, I am only a philosopher. But altboot is still resisting. It had problems accepting the sd-card configuration mentioned above, with a splitted card (500 mb vfat and 500 ext2) it is more happy. After having learned by myself how to transfer bz2-archives into tar.gz ones (why that, by the way? why do we find files in the feed we cannot use?), the rootfs-building process of the e-17 image went fine ... just until the end. Again altboot is not satisfied with loop0, next time I will write the exact formulation, but it is looking for something that doesn't exist.
Has anybody here installed e-17 image via altboot on tosa using altboot? Am I doing something wrong or is there a mistake inside...?
Thanx!
The message is: losetup:ioctl: LOOP_CLR_FD: No such device or adress

I'm having a problem on my poodle (pxa-250) running GPE (I don't know if it's gui related) & I'd like to know if anyone else can recreate this before I enter a bug for it.
My Z has both it's usbd0 & wlan0 interfaces active & the wlan0 is connected to my wifi lan. I then place the active Z in it's cradle OR reboot the Z while in it's cradled & all's fine - I can connect via either interface. I then take the Z out of the cradle, re-cradle & within a few seconds it locks up & has to be hard reset. If I 'ifdown usbd0' or if wlan0 wasn't active in the first place before the cradle dance then it's fine. If I 'ifup usbd0' after the cradle dance (& wlan0 is active) it locks up.

I've managed to solve the resolv.conf probelm (through somewhat of an ugly hack) by taking the tar.gz image, extracting it on my desktop PC, removing /etc/default/volatiles/01_resolv.conf and creating /etc/resolv.conf as a real file with my dns settings in it (although dhcp should override these). Then turning this into a new tar.gz file and installing it to the sd card on my zaurus.
I can't see why the default setup caused this problem, but this lets me get round it.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=120168\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I'm definitely curious about meanie's questions, especially the one about openoffice. Being able to run openoffice on openzaurus would be fantastic. :-)

Hi. I clicked on the link and got an error message: "Stack overflow at line72".
Have never seen that before.
Thanks for all the hard work at putting together the new Open ROM. A question for you -are there resources on how to use it -for example: how to install apps. I find this very difficult on the Open ROMs -especially when dependencies are involved.
I liked the Sharp ROM in that the install procedure was GUI based and relatively painless.
Cheers.

1. does the fbvncserver in OPIE support the C3x00 models, ie is the keyboard mapped correctly for those models or has it only been recompiled?
Just compiled.
2. is firefox and jamvm integrated, ie is there a java plugin for jamvm or any other java clones) that enables java applets in firefox?
Sun Java license was too strict so we did not work on packaging it.
3. since the openoffice port requires glibc 2.3 and OZ GPE is using 2.3, will openoffice install and run in OZ?
Standard problem with hardfloat (Debian) and softloat (OZ) will happen. If other words - can try, maybe it will even work but I expect calculations results being wrong.
4. is it possible to install both OPIE and GPE and run them concurrently via a fb?, ie run one environment in the foreground while connecting to the other via a vnc client?
It is possible but 64M RAM can be eaten very fast. You can run both on separate VT even.
5. can I run my existing Sharp apps, ie the dictionary and translator applications on OPIE using compat libs?
No - sharp-compat-libs are not expected to work properly - same problem as in 3.
6. can Chinese support be installed by simply installing the chinese locale and chinese fonts?
OPIE: no, GPE: yes
-
What is the difference between hardfloat and softfloat and which is better and why do the different ROMs do it differently?
-
http://wiki.openzaurus.org/FAQ#General_questions (http://wiki.openzaurus.org/FAQ#General_questions) - question: What is this 'soft-float' which OpenZaurus use?
-
Is it not posible to compile in hard-float but compile programs for soft-float so that both can be run or is it a compiled in only module that we dont have much room for (like in the c3k)

wow, this took a while to get a reply but thanks for digging it up and finally replying
its a pity there is no real support for vnc for the C3x00 models for the qtopia based distros (opie and sharp/cacko). at least there is x11vnc which works nicely for the X11 based distros.
as far as java support goes, oz already has the classpath package in its feed, but it is a rather old one (0.17) whereas the latest one is 0.91. adding a java plugin for firefox is simple by just compiling gcjwebplugin. sun's java licensing has relaxed a lot from what it was originally.
pity about openoffice but the new abiword can pretty much do all the important thing that oo has, ie print to open and save as pdf doc as well as open staroffice docs.
so the only obstacle now is the japanese and chinese support, in particular the dictionaries.
incidentally, i have noticed that most japanese and chinese users either use sharp rom or pdaxrom rather than oz because asian language support is better understood on those systems. if the oz team would make it easier and document how inputmethods and fonts can be easily added to support chinese and japanese, many more users will jump to oz

What meanie says is exactly what holds me back from trying out OZ: the status of CJK support (esp. inputmetod and font display) is unclear.
Actually I am very much willing to try out OZ on my 860 if things are made clearer.
Convenient pointers and accessible instructions to non-geeks are badly needed.
Look forward to having a chance to taste the fruits here.

No way to run hardfloat and softfloat with current ABI.
Angstrom (our new distribution from OE team) will use EABI so such things will be possible iirc.

I'm with Meanie and ZDevil on this as well, ie CJK support. I toggled between Cacko and OZ/gpe/opie Hentges rom for the past 1~2 weeks only because 1) Cacko could not get wifi detected while oz can and 2) I cannot quite find a clear process of getting CJK support installed on oz while Cacko just require some installations and tweaking ... a bit tricky as well, but no rocket science once you found the instructions and done it once.
I'm testing out pdaXrom now ... giving it a few more days to try out with CJK support. It is one up against oz as its GUI package installation works quite nicely while in oz, whenever I ask a quesiton about the GUI package installation, I get the "the GUI ipk installer is crap, use the command line" reply.
So, CJK support ... anyone?
EDIT: Missed my smileys!
EDIT: On pdaXrom, I got a Chinese ttf font copied to /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/TTF and rox displays the chinese filenames nicely!

Snappy: OZ lack CJKV support because we lack developers which use such languages.
For OPIE I will probably check in next weeks how does it works with latest patches (provided by ashikaze iirc (sorry for name errorrs)) and will probably provide updates.
For GPE someone has to check what is needed and work on integrating it. This enviroment should be able to display CJKV with proper fonts.

This is changing slowly. Japanese support is working quite nicely now, both HWR and keyboard-based. I use it daily. I am willing to support users in exchange for them writing up a HOWTO. Just open up a thread here and we can talk.

a bunch of people worked on making this a reality (including myself, but I really did not do much apart from not giving up and trying to coordinate things a bit at http://gakusei.sf.net (http://gakusei.sf.net/))

Display maybe, but that should be no difference between GPE and OPIE. Input is where the fun is anyway ;-)
Bottom line: OZ DOES JAPANESE!

Wow, I'm running into a slightly different issue (or it's the same issue and I just
noticed different details). I decided to try the gpe tarball installed to SD, on
the 5500. I have the 48-16 Opie flashed (if that matters).
My /etc/resolve.conf file is corrupted! Performing an ls in /etc produces the
"ls: ./resolv.conf: Input/output error" message. I shutdown the Z, and took the
SD over to my LINUX box, and it also gives the same error on that file.
Also, using "shutdown -h now" on the Z did not work very well. It gave about
12 errors trying to kill the same process ID (217), and then later said there were no
more processes at this runlevel, and froze the Z.
I may try a different SD card in a few days, but since the I/O error was occuring on
resolv.conf, and I say the previous post, maybe it's the same issue, so I'll wait
until I hear some comments. All in all, I like the altboot, and I'm looking forward to
trying the GPE 2.7
UPDATE: It must have been the exact same issue. I performed the procedure
as described in the earlier post, deleting the volatile (?) file in /etc/default and
putting down a real resolv.conf and networking worked. And on a humorous note,
my WIFI card somehow retained its configuration incuding the WEP key, and WIFI
actually worked before I configured it again!
