Title: New Z -> What Do I Need? Roms
Post by: loji on March 20, 2006, 07:11:24 pm
My heart tells me a 760-or-860 :::   altho I don't know what difference they have between them?

I have a 5600 now : which I want to dedicate to development for Wapaton (now abandoned) and OZ

I am wanting to replace my old laptop: this Z will do everything that I need it to do. So I would like the following functionality:  Is this possible with the C*60s'  What are your suggestions

  - Opera  (is there an arm binary with the regular built-in email client for opera?)
  - Gaim / Kinkatta (I need aim+msn)
  - VNC (viewer only I need to remote admin mac+win)
  - IRC
  - PDF
  - AbiWord ?
  - Kismet
  - Ethereal (i'd settle for tcpdump)
  - Nmap
  - FTP
  - SCP
  - Mediaplayer (kino? xmms? mlayer?)
            - I just need to mp3 playback, but video would be good for tutorials
  - IR (what infared tools work? remote??)
  - KO/Pi
  - GNUboy
  - SNES (is there enough power to avoid lag?)
  - Basic Calculator
  - Basic Timer (stopwatch fucntions)

I do alot of websearching, and I need to be able to constantly check online for things. I have a Linksys CF card, that should work fine. I would like to be able to use the Z as a USB storage device :::   but I suppose I could live without it if need be.

The Z scene seems to have moved to a new HardWare generation, and nothing is being supported for 5600's anymore. If I want to stay in the scene (and I love my Z) then it appears to be time for an upgrade. My gf is in Japan right now, so I'm hoping I can somehow find a good deal.   But what would be best for me?  I've never looked for C series before:  Please help inform me about what software problems you have run across, and which Z you feel has the largest support base in English speaking regions.

The 760 and 860 are identical hardware.  choose the 860 over the 760 because it is newer.  The 1000 has the same capabilities as the 860 and 760 with the exception of usb host and being able csuspend on closing the lid.  The 1000 is bulkier than the 860 and cannot slim down with a small battery.  Rom building and software is popular for both, but it is shifting to the newer generation (1000/3x00).

The hardware is virtually identical so I'll take either a 760 or 760 .   i don't see why i benefit from having a c-1000 really?   and i don't think 25,000-35,000 yen would buy a c-3000 even locally in japan. - . and i need more than a stock Sharp rom gives me.

as far as rom options go ::   it seems like pdaXrom would give the most usable mobile platform. The option of windowmanagers and ported applications seem to be the most like a decent linux box : without giving up the most basic of PDA functionality.

but is it stable? do installs always work?    I'll have to check in that forum,   but what would you suggest for a ROM to run smoothly with activ development?

I don't know yen, but I recently paid $610 US, plus shipping, for a 3100 (from Japan).  The hard drive makes it a real portable computer in ways that a laptop couldn't be.  I have all my papers, all my pictures, and all my spreadsheets on the thing, and it fits in my pocket.  Plus I can really type on the thing.

I migrated to this from a 5500, and the differences are large.  Especially the keyboard.  Such a joy in comparison.

I use pdaXrom -- on the 5500 I used OZ/GPE, but this screen has enough resolution to use X more fully, and pdaXrom does that.  It also gives me full versions of:

firefox, thunderbird (though I don't use that), sylpheed-2.0, LaTeX (and LyX), nedit, inkscape, gnumeric, abiword, xpdf

I think open-office has been ported, but I'd rather not bother with that.

The biggest limitation is the PIM software.  I use fltdj, which is simple-minded but works reliably.  I had trouble with gpe-calendar on the 5500 -- dates and times of appointments would migrate.  fltdj is pretty stable.  There is also the kde PIM stuff, which is more elaborate but which is a strain on the machine.

Even with the 400mHz xscale cpu and 64 megs of RAM, you do want to use lightweight apps when you can -- what, firefox?  Well, dillo and other minimal browsers won't let me on to my banking website,  Without that I am flying blind when on a trip.  My e-mail server is secure IMAP so sylpheed or something else full-bodied is needed.

I've gotten a C-1000 from price japan, shipping internally inside Japan for about $300 --

It's currently loaded with pdaXrom beta 3 and I love it !

I've got Xmms, SNES, sylphseed, dillo (sstill wanting opera tho)  really does everything I need ... and with the new beta 4 2.6 kernel it's got <4gig SD support

W00t    I'm a happy camper
