Hi everybody,
first, sorry for my english, i'm french! sorry for those who don't like frenchy, i don't have the choice when i'm born ...
I'm a programer (developper) and i would like to have a pda to help me in my job.
But i don't want to use a pda running under a M$ software!
Linux is the best
now my needs :
- sync with thunderbird
- english language (i can flash the rom i it's not too hard)
- wifi (cf card i think)
- not too slow
- reactive
- enough powerful to running some emulator for lunchbreak or long travel
- low price (i dream ... )
i think it's all ...
i'm not expected to buy a one hand pda, a second hand will be less cheap!
So what do you think i'm need?
regards,
Baallrog

any of the devices (760 860 1000) would, running pdaxrom, suit your needs perfectly.
Your real decision is going to be based on price and availability, I think (though the slightly smaller size of the 760 or 860 might appeal to you). The questions are: What price can you get each one for? How much is having a usb host on your handheld worth to you? How close is that to the price difference between models? what is your budget?
And don't get too excited about American Francophobia. It was mostly a passing fad whipped up in a patriotic frenzy by a now unpopular and distrusted government. Although as English speakers much of the historic/traditional literature that originated in Britain is part of our literary tradition as well, and reflects the English/French rivalry from an English perspective.

Ok, thanks for your answer.
My budget is not definitly established but i think 300$ to 350$ will be a good price.
It will be great to have the pda, wifi card and leather case at this price!!
What do you think about it ? less ? more ?
I heard that the C1000 is faster than the C860 or C760 series but the difference is very big?
I have looked the technical specifications about the models and there is no big differences, but in therms of using, is there differences?
sorry if i ask too much questions, i didn't want to buy something who don't fit my needs.
ps : by the past i have met some english people (from great britain) who doesn't like french people ...
Anyway, wherever you come, wherever you are, when you go to the toilet you must sit down !

I would go for C1000. Price difference is not too big BUT usb host capability is right key for me. :-)

The C1000 has wireless MMX, so that could make a significant performance increase for certain apps (mostly multimedia). There is a wmmx version of mplayer, for instance.

The USB host on the C1000 is a nice feature, since it opens up a whole world of peripherals to the Z. USB devices tend to be more inexpensive than their equivalent CF counterparts.

I would also back the C1000 as the best choice comparing price and performance.
The USB Host itself is worth the price difference in terms of greater expandibility that you get. I have often used the USB host to plug in a mini HDD or USB Sticks and transfer stuff between my camera to other's USB Sticks for sharing or even important files.
Plus you get the USB Keyboard/mouse comabination to work on it - which is good to have sometimes - when coding a lot on the Zaurus.
Also - a small point - but the keyboard on the C1000 seems to be better than the film type keyboard on the C760/860 devices. So the tactile feeling on the individual keys is better - me thinks.
of course not to mention the better speed...
Hope it help.
I think, as neither an American not British - that the french are very culture rich people, so language being not upto the mark as the English speaking doesn't take away from your culture's rich heritage (forgetting the "Old Europe" slant that was given to the french by this patriptic drivel that the govt in America spewed to suit its failed agenda (I stay here)).

Sorry for the off topic post, but that's not entirely true. I've seen many chinese washrooms that only have a hole in the ground (nowhere to sit).
Anyway, wherever you come, wherever you are, when you go to the toilet you must sit down !

Your right bluedevil!
I think i'm gonna buy a C1000, but i need to investigate a little bit more.
Can i plug a usb wifi stick and surf on the web?
A wifi stick will be less expensive!
can i synchronize thunderbird with the zaurus?
i don't find a second-hand Zaurus, do you have an idea where i can search?
thanx for your answer!!!

I have not seen anyone here making a success of Wifi via USB on any model Z. Bluetooth has been done via a USB dongle. You could do a forum search.
As for sync'ing, there's no way I know of to sync to Thunderbird ... the standard sync software will let you sync to Windows, but only Outlook (not Express, mind). And the various sync-to-Linux solutions all seem to want kmail, KDE Pim-Pi in particular. I'm sync'ing my 860 to an old version of Palm Desktop on my WinXP Home box, using Intellisync; but that's just for the calendar and address book, I get email over Wifi. (I could sync the Palm Desktop to Eudora, but why bother?)

Actually, there are people who had had Wifi working with USB on their C3x00. You just need the right driver for the device similar to the USB ethernet. So if there is a driver for chipset of the USB wifi , then it can be made to work.
To be honest, I don't see what all this fuss about synching is about. All this synching stuff is old technology from the old days where IMAP and LDAP wasn't available. I have all my mail on an IMAP server and use Thunderbird and Sylpheed as rich clients on my various devices, and Firefox/Netfront/Opera for the WebMail interface of my IMAP server.

Pretty much any usb device that is supported on Linux should be workable on the Z. You may need to compile the drivers yourself, and in some cases you may need to attach it to a powered hub (if the Z doesn't put out enough power)
-
BTW, converting CXXXX series to US is easy. If I can do it (hah), you most certainly can. It's like only a 5 min job .
I am fairly new to this, but cost & performance wise, I would recommend C1000 too. But since you didn't put host USB as a requsite, any older C clamshell would do just as well, I think.
Good luck

yes, i think i'm gonna buy a c1000 !
so if someone want to sell one, i'm interest ...
thanx to everyone!!
