Title: Does Cacko Supports Socket Spectrum24 Wifi Card?
Post by: tirant on March 27, 2006, 01:49:38 pm
I got my new Socket Spectrum24 today and have been all the afternoon trying to make it work, but no luck.

The card is detected by the kernel (wlan0), but couldn't make it work with the network settings. I have tried setting my ap to "B Only", to "no wep", etc... but after some seconds the software always told me that it was not connected.

I have also tried to make a dummy connection (ad-hoc, dummy ip), then connect it (it worked), and change the settings using:

Code: [Select]
# iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed essid home ap any
If I try to change channel I always get an error:

Code: [Select]
# iwconfig channel 2
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06):
Set Failed on device wlan0; Device or resource busy.

iwlist scanning is working, but it seems to only detect one network at one time (and not always the same) when I can get more than 10 with my laptop.

Thanks for any help, and excuse my terrible English.

EDIT: It seems the card connected to some AP, but not mine... Mmmm. It still doesn't detect my AP even though it's just 2 meters from the Zaurus (URS8054)

My socket wifi works without problem on cacko 1.22 on my 760 and 1.23 on my 3100.  Did I read correctly your essid as "home ap any"?

Thanks for the reply: did you make any special step to make it work? Do you use WEP?

My essid is "home", and "ap any" is an option to make the card connect to any ap on the network.

Edit: Now I'm getting:

wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Resource temporarily unavailable.

This is frustrating...

bluedevils, just one question:

what channel are you using for your wifi connection?

I change my access point channel from time to time.  Currently it's channel 8, infrastructure.

Is this your only wifi device?  Are you using dhcp or static IP?  Does your AP have logging?  Does it log DHCP requests?  Do you have MAC filtering on?  Just to be on the safe side have you rebooted the Z (I think you can just restart the cardmgr or do the whole cardctl reset and cardctl resume)?  If static IP, what does iwconfig and ifconfig return?

thnaks for the reply. after the last message i installed OZ again and kept trying:

I discovered i could only connect if my ap was on an odd number channel (tried all 13 channels and none of the pair number channels worked and they werent detected by iwlist scanning). Even oddlier, wellenreiter OZ networ utility were able to detect them on any channel.

With the new channel i decided to give cackos rom another try, and now its working without problems.

My laptop and ap client (also us robotics branded) never had any problem with my old channels.

I received my card yesterday from an ebay auction, so i have to found out if its faulty or not, just a problem with my ap, or a bug on the driver.

Thanks again for your reply

I've got a Socket Spectrum24 in my C860 with Cacko 1.22. The only problem I've got (and I have) is that kismet doesn't work, but I use wellenreiter instead.

I've connected to a Conceptronic, Linksys, Zyxel and Dlink AP (some of them opened and others with WEP). The only channel that I'm sure what is it, is the conceptronic AP on channel 6 and WEP.

I will try today at University, or any nearby cafeteria with free wifi. I believe one of my neighbours had an IPAQ, may be I can try the card with that PDA.

Ok. Tried at uni: Channel 6 working ok (no wep).

I suppose it's not a faulty card, but a compatibility problem btw my ap and the card...
