Well, guylhelm was writing a Phone app, but this might be useful to keep an eye on:
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/Gomunicator (http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/Gomunicator)
http://www.linuxdevelopment.org/projects/gomunicator.html (http://www.linuxdevelopment.org/projects/gomunicator.html)
A Linux GSM/SMS porgram that's already well on the way to working!
Already running on iPaq's and the HTC Blueangel (The XDA 2s - The onne with the keyboard that slides out of the bottom) and apparently works with CF cards, such as:
The AudioVox RTM8000 (Not the d version)
The Aimbicom CF-GPRS (Same as Audiovox)
The Chi-Mei G1 CF-GPRS (Still, SAME CARD! You'd have thought at least ONE company would have made their own. . .)
Anyone fancy compiling the latest source and making an ipk? I'm not far enough up the skill ladder yet, if someone makes a package, I'll be happy to test it - G's zeDialler didn;t work on my 5600.

'bitbake gomunicator' in OpenEmbedded and it will build it for you

Heh, read the sig, I'm on sharp rom. Also, my Zaurus has run out of credit, so I can't download source anyway. Damn, I really want Familiar running on the Universal. If they get a decent Linux on the HTC Uni, I'll just skip the SL-C3xxx and go straight to it. the Cameras and phone are useful for the kind of stuff I current use my 5600 for, whereas a HDD isn't. Besides, the Universal comes with a faster PXA and a better GPU installed, so it'll run ZPSX better. (Probably off of a 20gb Battery powered USB HDD in my pocket)

Found it!
I'm gonna get it onto a SD card, and give it a try. Wish me luck!
Attached it to this post, so if anyone else has a Datacard, feel free to try it too!
Will report back when tested.
-
It's an X11 application.
RHEEEEE!
Anyone fancy porting it to QT? Or anyone who has PDAXROM and a datacard want to test it?
My SL-5600 (Poodle-450) Can't un X Desktop apparently.
-
Aha! So GPE is based on X?
I always thought it was a modification of QT.
Still screwed, I could never make OpenZaurus work on mine. EVER!

3.5.4 seems to work fine on grog's 5600
-
Hmmm. . . I've got GPE running, but it flashed kenels, and it complains I have the wrong one, although there's only one kernel on my SD card. . . WTF?

HHHMMMFF!!?? WHA!!?? GROG HEAR NAME!!!!????
He sure does. Happily, I might add. Are you sure you have the right kernel image? I see you have PXA-250 in your sig (me 2). Confirm that you have the right image to match that
-
Yep. Not THAT thick XD
Redownloaded anyway, cleared SD of all files, and tried again.
I have mixed feelings on GPE. It's so far proven very slow. . .
Maybe it was just a first-boot thing? It does BOOT faster than Sharp though. . . About packages. . are there as many for GPE as for Sharp? Will normal X packages run? in other words, Can I get OpenOffice and the fox?
About to install Gomunicator and test it.

Well, if I can make this work on GPE (I LIKE IT! Best display yet for poodle) then it won't be a problem for me, but this: Should give Opie/QT users the same softs.

gomunicator should be in the feeds, if it's not, ask hrw to include it in the 'upgrades' thread
-
Only problem is, I don't have a net connection XD
To get a net connection, I have to use GPRS.

ARGH!

Phew back in Sharp. . .
And besides running GPE for 2 hours, it has the same config as before I formatted. . .
I LOVE THIS THING! ^^
