Title: Cxx00 Ide Dvd Burner
Post by: danboid on April 02, 2006, 08:44:07 am
A friend of mine has a CF IDE adapter so I'm presuming that by combining one of these with an ATX power supply or similar I could plug a DVD burner into my C3000 and use it with Gnomebaker or k3b under OZ / pdaxrom. Has anyone tried this? Would I be able to burn discs at the same speed as on a decent PC?

I don't know about that method, but you should be able to use a DVD burner (in an external case) with the usb host cable.

Yeah I know, but burning a CD over USB1 is SLOOOW (4x max innit?)- burning a full DVD would be almost unbearable.

I think I remember hearing that k3b isn't quite useable on a 640x480 display as the main window was too big. I suppose this is still the case, but what about Gnomebaker under GPE or pdaxrom?

Sure thats not a IDE to CF adaptor that allows you to plug a CF card into the IDE bus

yeah the 12Mbits is slow as, its only good for reading DVD's (i have a USB dual layer DVD burner) burn speeds would be at 1x

Would it matter? If it works one way it should work both no? I'm just presuming that the CF slot would be able to do something faster than 12mbps- what speed should it be capable of on a C3000?

If only that were true, CF cards can do IDE emulation but CF sockets can only do CF (else there would be no reason for the CF standard)

CF 2.0 = 16MB/s, CF 3.0 = 66MB/s
intel PXA's are CF 2.0 and i belive they only hit the 66MB/s speed when in IDE emulation mode using DMA

Aproching the 500 Mark (416)

Thanks for those specs Da_Blitz, but

"CF cards can do IDE emulation but CF sockets can only do CF"

just confused me, Are you saying that a simple CF to IDE cable wouldn't work for adding a CDRW/DVD drive but if it had some electronics integrated it could be possible or is the whole idea a no-go? It would be a shame if its not possible because 16MB/s is a damn sight better than the 1.5MB/s offered by USB1.1

If its a no for CF2, does CF3 allow the use of optical IDE drives with an adapter? I've been told that CF has exactly the same pin-out as IDE

CF cards are designed to be plugged into ethier a CF socket (CF mode) or a IDE bus (in IDE emulation mode)

a CF socket only provides CF mode

the only diffrence between CF 2 and 3 is the speed in IDE mode

as for the speed, its much better and the reson why i am trying to get a CF 10/100 ethernet card instead of using the USB port, a USB 2.0 chip on the CF interface would be a very nice addition
