Now that I've 'unborked' my 3100 I'm on to thinking about other ways to mess things up... I mean improve things on my Z.....
Noticed that you can get a 4GB SD card for about $140 or a 8GB MD (Micro-Drive) for about $150-160....
So wondering whether it makes more sense to have the 4GB SD card or to get the 8GB MD and replace the 4GB MD in my Z???
What do you all think are the pros and cons??
I'm thinking in terms of running Qtopia and X/Qt/Debian or pdaXrom, etc...
Thanks,
Mark

I say swapout the MD with a 8gb AND throw in a 4gb SD... LOL
With the cost of the MD these days I would say get the 4gb sd... having the ability to remove media (quickly) is a pro on my list... especially if you have a media reader on your PC... I know for me... I love being able to pop out my SD's and CF's and pop them in to my 10 in 1 and copy data and just pop it back in the unit instead of copying it over wireless or sync cable
Also I dont know if there is any added power usuage using a larger MD... well... the decision is in your hands...
Either choice you make your still getting a total of 8gig... unless you take the rich mans route.. and get both...
Good Luck with your choice.

The 8GB seagate md eats more power than the Hitachi one.
Replace the md with a faster CF is a better solution.SD's speed is said to be limited.

Thanks for your thoughts, InSearchOf and chyang
Interesting that neither of you think it's good to get a larger MD....
chyang, only reason I don't like using CF's is that I can't use my either my WiFi or my Ethernet CF card while the CF storage card is in it....
As you say, InSearchOf, it's nice to have the flexibility with storage cards of moving files around w/o having to connect up Z to PC, etc.....
Hmmmm......

yea... that is why I use my SD it stays in 24/7... I also dont like having to remove my CF wifi... ever... I only remove my wifi cf is to use my 512 cf cards are when I want to watch a movie or copy some music to it for long trips.... where Wifi isnt avaliable....

Depends entirely on your usage pattern.
If you need the space internally, you should go for the larger MD.
I for one would not need it at all. I'll exchange the MDs in my two 3000s soon with 4GB CFs because I need stability, speed and battery life.
Actually, I'd even go for 1GB or 2GB FC cards if I haven't had a good opportunity to buy 4GB ones.
Now that there is an SD driver for cards >1GB, I'll rather see how to enlarge storage in the SD slot, even more because the SD slot cannot be used for anything else. The CF slot can be used for so many things.
The best for me would be to have only program data on internal storage and all user data on external storage such as SD, because then backup is much easier and more reliable and additionally I can pop the SD card simply into another Zaurus or computer and continue to use my user data right were I stopped before.
So I'll definitely go for a 4GB SD card, put all data on it (also large things like dictionaries, Wikipedia dump etc. which I currently still have on MD) and additionally put regular (weekly, and always before I install anything new) backups of hda2 and home on the card.
Then I'll periodically, maybe once a week, put the SD card into the Linux PC and do a full backup of the card.
For additional backup, I'll maybe run a daily backup which tar-s some SD card data (preferably data which changes often, such as PIM, email and notes) onto a backup file on the internal MD. This would be to have recent versions at hand in case I screw something up and need to revert to the previous file version.
The remaining internal space could be used to store MP3 for occasional listening.
But since I don't have much time to do so, maybe I'll really go for smaller CF cards internally... ;-) Well, we'll see.
Another idea:
If the MD is replaced by a CF card, there would be a good way of making more room for albertr's wireless USB dongles to put inside the SL-C3x00.
The CF cards can be taken apart (remove the case) and then they are much thinner, leaving room for another layer of electronics, such as BT and Wifi boards...
Just an idea, not (yet) tested!

You are the offical backup king!
hahaha...
Yes CF's are a better option for speed and power consumption...
ArchiMark, I dont know what know how you use you Z on a daily basis... if it for business/personal... or for personal/play... but the decision would be based on how you use it... I personally use my for play... websurfing on the crapper (LOL)...
SD would my choice just for the swapibility and warrantability...
(warranty depending on how long you owned it where you purchased it)

Thanks, guys for the added thoughts!!
Good point about usage, Daniel3000, InSearchOf....
My Z is at this point mostly a fun toy to learn more about Linuxworld.....
However, I'm hoping to do some more serious stuff with it if I ever settle on what ROM to use, etc...
Thinking more about having dual-boot capability as opposed to just one ROM, like pdaXrom...want to keep the Sharp option available...
So probably leaning more today towards Sharp/X/Qt/Debian ???.....
So what do you think??
Thanks,
Mark

Agreed. On my C3000 I have practically nothing on hdd3... Lost data a couple of times when having to do factory reset... The delivered backup/restore works fine for everything else, having to do something separately for hdd3 is a pain.. Since I'm using a 4GB CF & 4GB SD I'm not (yet) hard up for space...

There is a post here where someone Replaced the Internal microdrive with a CF Flash card.
How about this!
8GB Internal CF card, 8GB External CF card, 4GB SD card for a whopping 20GB!

Holey Moley, Jon_J !!!
The mind boggles at the thought of all that room....
