Title: Is Zaurus Cross Compatable With These?
Post by: Jon_J on April 08, 2006, 07:09:12 pm
This must seem to be a silly question, but search didn't come up with a conclusive answer.
Does the software from these devices also work on the Zaurus?

SIMpad
Archos
iPAQ

There are hardware compatibiblity issues to be resolved with each of these, let alone the different flavours of linux involved ... you might want to scroll down to the device-specific forums [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showforum=125]here[/url] and poke around a bit on the Simpad, Archos, Ipaq, and Nokia 770 forums to get an idea of the puzzles involved in going the other way.

Thank you, that is what gave me the idea to ask my question above.
I'll look in the forums under "Model Specific"

Some software from these devices may be compatible with the Zaurus.   The key is what library dependancies are present.  If the software is linked against libraries (and versions) that are also present on the Zaurus, than it should work.  I've heard of some 770 programs that run on the Zaurus.

Hardware incompatibilities could be an issue, but the hardware is often abstracted through a library (like SDL).   If that's the case, then it should work.  If the software accesses the hardware directly, it probably won't.
