Hello,
I consider switching to an SL-C1000 (from SL-C3000).
What are its disadvantages? The missing internal drive is rather an advantage for me, because I actually don't need it much.
What about ROM support? I see some ROMs are installed only on hard drive and not in built-in flash. So how (if at all) is this done on the C1000?
Can a card be used for e.g. OpenBSD or pdaXrom?
What about other aspects I may not have considered?
Thanks for any opinion or fact!

The 1000 is an updated version of the ol' 760/860. I run pdaxrom on my 760 without problem. If you want to store lots of programs then you will have to utilize a decent size sd and/or cf/microdrive card. What you gain with the 1000 over the 3000 is some reponsiveness (especially from suspend) and the flash should be more robust for storing your ROM image.

For a price difference between C1000 and C3XXX you can get a decent size SD card to use with C1K. IMHO, coupled with a large SD card, C1K beats dust of any C3XXX.

I don't have a C1000, but a C3100.
I think the major advantage of the C1000 is the 128MB Flash over the 16 MB flash in the C3000
This is just my opinion, after reading many posts here and elsewhere.
The C3000 requires a seperate build of a new ROM, when new ROMs are made available.
I cannot be specific right now, but I've read about problems of squeezing the operating system into the smaller flash on a C3000.
I know it has a hard drive for the above reason, but I just think the C1000/3100 are more cross compatable,
and ROMs are usually developed for these models first.

daniel3000,
I was bored and am re-reading the C1000/3x00 General discussions from page one.

Just my 2 cents...
I owned a c1000 for a year or so. I am looking for the functionality of a small laptop. So, as soon as I recieved the unit I put pdaxrom on it. The rom works great! With intelligent space utilization you can have a great little machine. the problem was me, I wanted more storage. I wanted to be able to haul around music and dump photos directly from my digital slr. So, consequently, I ended up selling my ipod and my c1000 and investing into the 3200. I had no quams with the 1000. In fact, I would tell anyone who is borderline to just go for the 1000 because if wotrse comes to worse you can sell it on ebay and get very close to your money back (c series zaurii depreciate in value VERY slowly).
As for the 3200 well... I am rather frustrated right now because of the lack of support with pdaxrom. But, I'll wait and it will be that much sweeter when they decide to upgrade it for is few 3200 users....

- This is why I got a C1K, but then the C3100 wasn't out back then. If'n I were getting one now, I'd likely get a 3100 and have the best of both worlds ... ROM in flash and HD internal. I do kind miss not having swap, and I just don't like the idea of swap on SD. (shivver) The HD would not only give me space to install monsterous apps like OpenOffice, but it would give me tons of swap. That would be sweet, 'cause I run out of memory constantly.
- Course with a C1k you can do that awesome mod albertr did for WiFi & BT internal. That could be 'bout worth skipping the internal HD 'cause it frees up the CF for an external one, if it's that important. Without WiFi or BT to plug in, I'm not sure what I'd use the CF for, 'cause I don't have GPS. Even if I did, they have BT GPS, so I'm still golden.
- I do have to say I'm supremely satisfied with Hiro, and wouldn't consider trading him off unless there were some compelling reason to, and niether of the C3x00 series fit that bill.
- Just my half nibble..
