I'll give it a shot this weekend. I need to flash anyway; Somehow I lost the "." dot on my main (non-X, it works fine in x-windows) console.

I'll tests! c3200... give feedback tomorrow

Excellent! I had literally just upgraded from beta1 to beta2 (was going to skip beta2 and wait for beta3, but for some funky reason after a reset, all my window decorations went AWOL, and my matchbox-panel doesn't display (it's running, I can see it in 'ps ax')).
Anyway now I can dump beta2 and start on beta3. Thanks sashz.

There's a fix for that I applied to my Zaurus a while back. I think it's fixed by changing the xmodmap file.

Any plans to update Firefox to "the latest and greatest"?

Will there be any more pdaXrom upgrades for SL6000/Tosa?

GCC is 3.4.6 in the feed. Could you update the zgcc image ? That would kinda make sense.

Any hope about kernel 2.6.x on pdaXrom for ARMV5?

I can test on a 6000... nudge nudge...

Is the OQO now supported with the new X86 version? I guess, I will need to burn a CD and find out
-
My first impressions:
1- Load time for FLASHed applications are a bit slow;
2- SSH access from PC to Z, by Wireless are more fast.
3- rxvt are nice!
4- Wifi applet now works
Crashs:
1- Lost /dev/hda (Internal HDD) device node, but back after reboot
2- Missing libiconv.so.2
Questions:
1- Why not have rosetta on pdaXrom, like a applet ?
2- Why not have a full pdaXrom for SL-C3x00 machines using all 128MB?
-
Everything seems to be fine and on par to when I used it on my 1000. The one thing I have noticed- if I pull my wifi card out everyonce in awhile it freezes. I can still tap the screen and move the cursor aorund but nothing will operate.

I've always wondered about the choice of programs that was included in the base install, eg like why have both aterm and xterm, when I use neither as I much prefer mrxvt. However what I would like to see is, instead of increasing the size of the base install, I would like a minimal install. That way I can add just the things that I want, and I don't have to go around removing things that I don't need (like Xdemineur (or however you spell it).
I think that is why sashz has provided us with the Builder system. If I understand the docs correctly, you just select the stuff you like, and off it goes to build you a spanking new customised rom. I have to have a serious play with it over the weekend.

What about SD driver?
Is there a new Sharp (from SL-C3200), or yours? Have it any problems with >1Gb Cards?

2- Missing libiconv.so.2
libiconv is not used anymore for this release...so I guess someone will have to make an compat ipk so that application compiled for previous releases can work...
installing :
http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta2/Zaurus-....2_armv5tel.ipk (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta2/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/libiconv_1.9.2_armv5tel.ipk)

This time round the CXXX feed is a lot bigger than previous releases so I thought "maybe this time we will get a full for the CXXX machines", especially since there was no C7X0 feed mentioned. However when I was working through my list of apps to reinstall when I got down to gnumeric and found that it was missing so I installed the beta2 version, then goffice is missing too (and maybe a bunch of the other stuff that gnumeric depends on). So you're right I had better wait for the C7X0 feed to come up.

I agree with you Desertrat, i would like a minimal installation too.
So i could cross-compile new glib, atk, gtk packages without breaking the ROM.
But think about newbye users, i don' t know if they really could be in mess without the graphical installation integrated into ROM.
As i see the very first question is "How do i start graphics tools?" that is logical.
So i' wondering if could be possible to have to kind of ROMS, like Family that has BOOTSTRAP,GPE,OPIE, and if that could be lead to confusion.
BYEZ!

Hi
pdaXrom (1.1.0beta3), sl-c3200
installation was ok, though there was a japanese confirmation menu i did not expect (i safely hit th 'Y' answer).
i partitioned the suggested 58M for / (root), which i believe was a bad idea -- i should make it larger
i did not encounter any serious problems, just:
* keyboard switching does not seems to remmap the keys back (try english keyborad -> czech keyborad -> english keyboard) == you will end up with some czech characters still mapped
* not always ok from suspend -- while the music was n, i suspended and the /dev/dsp seemed to be used --> i was not able to use it again till reboot (i tried to stop X, stop esd, unload mmc* modules)
* i am unable to set hw clock to UTC and than set timezone appropriately to show my local time (CEST), so i have clock in UTC
* SD 1G memory (Kingston Ultimate 133x), CF Wifi (Planex CF11X), USB bluetooth dongle (3com SL-1020), ethernet over USB -- everything is fine, only the ethernet over USB is needed to set with smaller MTU, or the communication starts to stall for bigger files, (ie. bigger then mtu usb can handle) (no entry for it in the gui, so i execute this command everytime i connect my zaurus to debian desktop: ifconfig usbd0 mtu 500)
* i miss my sharp remote for music playback, was not cheap to buy and i dont want sharp Rom once i saw this one -- any chance to get it working?
* i noticed that some keys '@', '.' were not available while i was in command line (before 'startx')
* software: i miss emacs, some python modules, ncftp, gnuplot
Anyway, first experience with pdaXrom and im very pleased! easy installation, nice look, good software feed
Thanks a lot

This is great news! Does this mean that pdaXrom will be using some of the same patches that OZ uses for their 2.6 kernels? And if so, does this mean that there will be a common set of patches maintained by both teams?
-
Hi,
Just a reminder... if you're having problems with your Symbol Spectrum card, check out post #14 about how to get the firmware:

Great news about the 2.6 kernel finally hitting pX but of course video acceleration and cpu scaling are still lacking on the cxx00 devices- isn't it?? Its a pretty big downer for most Z users not being able to use it for video or gaming
So we'll see 2.6 kernel in the next pdaXrom beta?
xorg 7 would be great too!
-
Oh sweet! I've been having to dig so hard to find everything needed to get the sources and sdk for OZ, just so I can implement BVDD support and port over SDL 1.2.9 with BVDD support.
If you need help with adding BVDD support to pdaXrom now that it uses kernel 2.6, please let me know and I'll get it up and running! Thanks so much!
ZPSX (PSX emulator on the Sharp Zaurus) that I developed for pdaXrom really needs the cpu to be overclocked, which I might be able to get working once BVDD is in place by implementing a cpuclk patch.
I'm extremely excited by the news about Kernel 2.6, so if you need any help testing pdaXrom using kernel 2.6, please let me know. I really want to get a new version of ZPSX out and I think it should use the latest pdaXrom build.
Yay!
-
As far as i know you are able to overclock the cpu since rc11 I think and I always overclocked the cpu when I tried zpsx... but I'm still looking forward to 2.6, which are really great news.

I'm missing libgnomeui in the feed.
I could find it only in the feed for C7x0-860 beta1, not for C3100 beta2 or beta3.
Can someone explain, what is the reason for it?

yes, OZ 2.6 unsupported overlays, cpu scaling for Cxx00. But happily the phycore board has the same CPU PXA270, and support this cool features. So we will use this for zaurus. For now i debug overlay driver

Install libconv and this works nice!

I've noticed some odd behaviour with regards to the power settings. I have disabled the auto power off (both battery and A/C), the problem is that it will still power off, sometimes. Yesterday my Z was on A/C practically the whole day and it stayed on. But sometimes it will switch itself off after some undetermined/random period of time. Never had this kind of behaviour in beta1.
Anyone else have the same problem?

Hi Pgas,
that sounds interesting, though there is a problem with the download of updater.sh, you only get the apache error message. Can you please upload it again?
Is the problem with suspend/resume draining all the battery gone with beta3?
Regards,
Fabian
-
Hello Pgas,
I solved the install problem, looks good so far for me. Btw, how did you create the beta3?
Here are my remarks:
/etc/ipkg.conf
----------------
- old src entries, changed to:
src chero http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/Chero (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/Chero)
src beta3 http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/1.1.0beta3...s-7x0-860/feed/ (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/1.1.0beta3/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/)
Installation
-------------
- use updater.sh from beta2 feed
for gnumeric (and some others)
-------------------------------------
- libgfs from rc12 feed (new download location: http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/rc12/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/) (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/rc12/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/))
- libgnomeui and dependencies via normal ipkg install installed
general remarks
-------------------
- z frozen after suspend from inactivity
- qpkg not working
- no battery drain, but I haven't used the sd yet
Regards,
Fabian

I just burned the beta3 to CD and tried it out on my PC. GOSH it looks good on a big screen
it boots and finds my usb drive and tries to boot off it but cant find a boot image which is expected, but this makes me think whether I can somehow install pdaXrom X86 to the usb disk and boot off it instead of the CD-ROM.
Anyway, it then finds the CD and boots off it and then detects that I got more than a gig of memory and copies everything into RAM.
All the apps are installed and the native gcc compiler is also there. Nice
but there is no cross compiler. Can I use the cross-sdk-armv5tel-cacko-linux-3.4.6-2.2.5-softfloat.tar.bz2 with pdaXrom X86 to crosscompile apps for the Zaurus? I am currently downloading it. Hopefully I am not wasting my time and getting over my download quota again.
-
Btw, how did you create the beta3?
I used the builder posted together with beta3 for 1000.., using config_xtool and config xtools kernel from config/akita
and config_rom from config/
use updater.sh from beta2 feed
ok, I'll check If something wrong with the file, I took it from another release anyway.
libgfs from rc12 feed (new download location
hmm, I manage to run gnumeric using the package from the beta3 feed.
I ll check if the fle libgfs from the beta3 feed is ok.
Can I use the cross-sdk-armv5tel-cacko-linux-3.4.6-2.2.5-softfloat.tar.bz2
You probably can.....

Where I find zImage and initrd.bin from beta3 for use on Qemu?
Integrator CP (demo for qemu-system-arm emulator, no any GUI)
Kernel: zImage
Rootfs: initrd.bin
Run it: qemu-system-arm -kernel zImage -initrd initrd.bin -nographic
Login as root without password. Dropbear SSH2 server/client installed.
-
Silkscreen on C1000 still doesn't work
-
Btw, how did you create the beta3?

pgas, any chance of writing a quick tutorial on how to use the builder? I tried it a short while ago but when I got to "make world" it failed because it was trying to download a *.bz2 file when the site only had *.tar.gz versions available.
libgfs from rc12 feed (new download location

Dear fabianE,
Is it possible for you to post a copy of Beta2 updater.sh ?
It is no longer possible to download beta2 from pdaxrom site.
Also, is the update.sh from beta2 the same as beta1?
Thanks,
Felix.
-
Hello,
>Also, is the update.sh from beta2 the same as beta1?
I guess it's always the same, so beta1 or rc12 should be fine.

Hi,
I am on a trip to Russia and have limited access to the internet right now, so
to enjoy all the free wifi internet cafes in Moscow I was using my Zaurus with gaim to
keep in touch with people at home (don't have to lug my heavy laptop!).
The Zaurus and pdaxrom are ideal for this purpose!! However, some things
go wrong once in a while...
I installed the beta1.1.0beta3 and the only program I installed as well was
gaim 2 beta (from the feed) with all the libs, in /home/user/ (so both gaim and
the libs were installed there).
However three times so far the following has happened:
When I start gaim first it works a few times. At some point when I load it
it will not start at all, when I type gaim in the shell it says that it
cannot load libao.so.2. I do file /home/user/usr/lib/libao.so.2 and it is a
symbolic link, so it should be ok. It points to libao.so.2.12 or something and
that seems to be ok too. When I reflashed the rom and reinstalled
gaim it worked again. I tried several sizes of the root/user when reflashing,
and right now I have 64/64. Oh I also tried making a symlink from /usr/lib/libao.so.2
to the proper files in /home/user/usr/lib/ and this gave some error as well
(probably because root is read-only .
What I have not tried:
-Installing gaim on / instead of /home/user/
-Installing gaim on my cf card
Any clue what goes wrong?
Some other remarks I have:
It seems that the command history is saved somewhere, or is this just in the ram?
I want to write to flash as few as possible, is there a way to turn it off?
And a minor remark: the feed adress in the rom is not set correctly, which is a bit of
work when reflashing the rom (have to set the wifi to managed
and to change the adress of the feed before one can reinstall stuff).
Thanks
-
Since this is my first time flashing my Zaurus, which I received only 2 days ago lol, I got everything flashed fine but after rebooting and booting up Pdaxrom for the first time it gave me the wong magic error. Using a C3200 btw.
cramfs: wrong magic
FAT: bogus logical sector size 381
Relatively new to Linux so I have no idea on how to fix this, even after searching the forums. Hope a fix comes along soon. Keep up the good work though!

Does that error stop it from booting? It is a normal error. Linux is "testing" to see what filesystem is on the Z. It tries different settings until it finds one that works. That is my understanding anyway.
Do a search for the error on the forum and you'll find several references to it.
If this is stopping your Z from booting, then it is probably something after that point that is stopping it.
-
Dear azalin,
try "ldconfig" if some of your libs are missing.
BR,
Felix.
-
Additional info on the error:
After it gives me the bad magic error it fails to initiate console. Using the beta 3 btw, seems to boot up normally besides that as it then it asks for a username and pass to continute on after that point. I just log on with root and after that point, well I'm stuck. I've had experience programming in several languages but my only experience with Linux has been with the Zaurus. I'm sure it'll come to me eventually but right now it's really furstrating. i've looked on the forum for solutions, and apparently i think I've found some, just not sure how to go about implementing it.
Anyhow, just reporting on what I've got thus far to help with the c3200 testing. keep up the good work!

As others have said, Bad Magic only means that Linux is operating normally
on the Zaurus' NAND.
Finding a root console, and getting dumped to a shell is also normal operation
If you've used MSDOS in the ancient past, or the Windows command shell,
the Zaurus' bash shell works in much the same way.
You type a command line to run programs; some shell builtins handle simple
file maintenance.
'ls' for 'list files'
'cd filename' to change directory
'df' to list disk usage/capacity
'mount' to see what file systems (partitions) are mounted
and when you're ready to try start the X Windowing System,
'startx'
(also, if you type a command that doesn't seem to be working, and the shell appears to be stuck, <ctrl>C will generally abort the active process running ontop the shell)
and, welcome to Linux
-
Sorry Farkas, I didn't know you were new to pdaXrom. It is a little confusing when it just dumps you to a login and command prompt if you are used to an OS that starts the GUI by default or a PDA.
Fortunatley, this is documented. If you go to http://www.pdaxrom.org/ (http://www.pdaxrom.org/) and click on "Documentation" it explains logging in and running "startx" to get X Windows started.
Most of us here are long time Unix geeks, and so we forget to explain the basics. Sorry.
Glad to a see a Linux newbie tackling a Linux PDA!

beta3 does not need this package as it uses libiconv from the glibc, but you do need it for applications compiled for a previous version.
Installing libiconv from a previous beta should work.
Is there a quick fix for this, or should I have stock with Beta2?
remove the -kb from the options in startx and you should be fine

I have the same problems on my C3200: No Fn+1,2,3,4, no "."-Key out of X-server, trouble with the russian and easteuropean keyboard-mappings, which cannot be switched off (so I had to delete/rename the keymappings in /etc/X11/kb)
So I would love to have this a little bit more specific: in the file /usr/X11R6/startx on my C3200 I can find no reference to -kb (??)
Thanks for your help.

I think you mean ADD -kb. There was no -kb, as another poster has noted, but adding it helped me.
Just change this line in /usr/X11R6/bin/startx:
defaultserverargs=" -nolisten tcp"
to:
defaultserverargs=" -nolisten tcp -kb"
and FN 1,2,3,4 all work now for me on Beta3!

Thanks, that did the trick!

What does this option do? Using it has fixed a longstanding issue that I had with some programs (Bluefish, Scite, Sylpheed) where I couldn't use SHIFT + arrow keys to select text. Also it fixed the problem whereby if I had configured the keymap to enable F keys (F1, F2 etc), then programs like Gnumeric would not let me enter certain digits (1, 2, 3 etc).

When I'm playing videos in fullscreen with mplayer or xmms on my C3200 using bvdd with beta3, everything works fine (and fast) until I try to stop it. Then there is no response at all. I have to stop the xserver with Cnrl-ALT-BS, but then the screen is filling up slowly with white colour until reboot.
Is there any working keymapping or other workaround?

Don't trust your NAND-Backup in beta3!!!
I just blew my whole installation when trying to go back to an older NAND-backup. NAND restore worked well, but when booting I ended up in kernel panic.
Has anyone made a successfull NAND restore with beta3 on a C3200?

Just tried Beta3 on my Akita ... works right out of the box. Wifi xi-825 works great as well! woo hoo!
Only gripe is that resume from suspend is a second slower than Cacko (faster) or OZ (fastest).
I'm afraid of Beta4 as it requires a custom bootloader. Does Beta4's bootloader allow you to load up Cacko or OZ as well?
