Regarding commercial reproduction of the hacks discussed, I will soon do a quick enquiry on what is possible at various local businesses and I will keep you guys informed, but what I must know beforehand is in the poll questions.
Additional open question : the GSM addon will require a BT headset - are you ready to the a bt headset ?
For the hack you want, how much would can you pay?

For the all in one mod, including BT headset, I'd certainly pay £200, maybe more as an early adopter. I'll bring US$400 with me when I'm next on the other side of the pond
(seriously, I'll be over for a month around July/August)
What do you mean by:
are you ready to the a bt headset ?

i chose bluetooth only. then i can still put a wifi card in the cf slot and never take it out and the most important reason: cost effective solution
but if the wifi mod gets to be cheap, maybe i'd like that too.

My thinking was that it would be great to have all the networking in the case of my SL-C1000, then I can leave a 8Gb microdrive in the CF slot, rather than dealing with small and slow SD cards.
-
With the GSM i would only get it if the audio could be sent to the PDa, eg throgh the headphone port or some other way so that i could put an ansering machine on my zaurus
as i have both a headset and an A2DP capable stereo headhones i dont mind losing the headphone jack if i gain bluetooth
so i guess i would sum it up as i will buf it if the hack is flexible enogh
for cost, depends on the capabilities, but up to the $300-$400 AUD
also would this be an all in one custom designed PCB? as i have been researching a number of the hacks you have mentioned and to do them all i have to do is design the board. for example the 1G ram hack is posible but requires 8 chips, to add everything you would need a pcb the size of the zaurus mainboard but you would gain 1G Ram, Wifi (or 2) bluetooth, GSM or 3G, up to 3GB of flash (or mabey more, still looking into the limitations), this is why i am intrested in the carbon fiber case (beside the ability to give me room for a PCMCIA slot)
nowdays GSM, bluetooth and wifi are single chip solutions so not much of a problem, i also know af a place that does small runs for prices that cant be beat that also purchase the parts and solder them for you (including ball grid array)

Woudln't it be possible to cost-optimize by replacing the internal hard drive of a 3x00 by a Bluetooth CF card (small one, such as Nokia DTL-4, same size as MD) and then only solder Wifi on USB internally? Is this technically ad driver-wise possible?
Of course only provided that you don't need the MD all the time. You can still use it in the external slot, in exchange for other peripherals...
The difference to buying a C1000 is that the C1000 has no internal CF port so you cannot simply connect a BT CF internally.

From MUST have ...to less...
1)wifi
2)bt
3)gsm
4)mem
I have c3100

- I voted for "all", though I really don't care about GSM. I'm looking for Memory, Wifi, and BT, in that order, so if money is a concern, I'd pay for 128MB RAM first, internal WiFi second, and internal BT last. That's the order I anticipate using them, as well, based my current usage of WiFi & BT, and how often I lament not having more memory, having to fish out the WiFi CF, or having to wrestle my freaking phone into indicating it does actually have a DUNS channel. (grin)
- Course if GSM would convert the unit into a phone, that would be something. Already have a BT headset for a phone, but why would that require BT? Wouldn't a "standard" earbud work in the headphone jack? (shrug) I'm not sure I like the idea of getting a call, then having to fish out the BT card and stick in it, and hope it intializes in time to answer the phone. (wink) I'd think GSM/BT would be a "package" at that point, at least for C1K users.
- Whilst on the topic of phone conversion, here in the grand old US of A some of the really heavy hitters use CDMA, like my current provider. If the Z is going to be phone-enabled, would CDMA (and/or its follow-on protocol) be investigated? Heaven forbid providers here would, oh, use what the rest of the world uses. (wry grin)
- Memory, though. I'm starving for more memory. I run low several times a day, and I'm not even running X...
-
I voted for Just memory 128mb
There's no WiFi public hotspots where I live.
(I would use WiFi at home if I had a wireless setup, but that would be infrequently)
I don't have a cell fone
I don't really need bluetooth.

I voted Wifi and Memory...
You can never have to much memory... Plus everything else on the list is an upgrade that can be done externally... Memory isnt *EASILY* possible as of now...
The only thing I would require is being able to disable the wifi... when I say disable I mean basicly send no power to the chip. Battery is something that I require.. and if I would have to sacrafice a significant power loss for on board wifi... I would just take the ram upgrade....
-
I would be really interested in 128MB memory upgrade.
Since I have C3100 there isnt enough space inside for bluetooth, is there?
-
realized the question was also about how much you will pay.
i'd pay 50-70$ for the bluetooth.
also if you can do the screen hack, i'm interested in that too if it doesn't ruin the design of the zaurus, yes that's important for me.. (would pay a little more than for bluetooth)
-
for my 3100 i'd be interested in internal wifi, maybe an hd upgrade while it is open, and maybe a 6k screen transplant--if we still can get the screens, and they fit. and of course a ram upgrade, if reasonable.
I voted for wifi and memory, but I'd be curious to see if the bt,wifi, gsm could be done in a 3100
-
I voted for memory and wifi.
I'd love extra memory (predominantly RAM, but HDD or Flash space would be cool, tool), and wifi (that could be shut off) would be nifty ... as for how much I'd pay, well, I took the C1000 over the C3100 to save some money, and it counted as n birthday and christmas gifts ... so I'm not in any position to pay for add-ons any time soon. [Sorry, I didn't see the "pay" question until after I voted.]
Would these hacks require people to send in their Zaurii, or would you sell new Zaurii that have been modded?

Since there seems to be a demand, I will see if I can arrange that with a local soldering small business who does a very clean job.
What people who have to do is :
- provide their Zaurus + the parts that must be fitted it, like the BT and WIFI usb dongles (it is your duty to check for compatibility !)
- pay for the time spent and s&h costs
Additional components could be purrchased locally by the shop, but usb dongles compatibility may vary on a per batch basis, so I wouldn't want to hassle them before the venture is operationnal and running .

Ah. Thank you, InSearchOf.

I agree with other poster... in descending order of value:
- more rom/ram
- wifi
- bluetooth
- GSM
more rom/ram is almost equal to wifi - 'cos adding swap file onto SD or CF card helps a lot. However, as Seymour Cray (supercomputer man) said "memory is like sex, it's better when it's not fake". More RAM would really help the Z fly; more flash would be useful in the 1000 (assuming that the conversions would not be possible in the 3200 due to space!).
for me, the key thing is to have the equivalent of a C3200 with wifi and leave the CF slot free for a GPS. If SDIO driver was solved, then this would mitigate the issue somewhat.
GSM is something I'd use occasionally, but not at the same time as anything else, so am happy to continue to use audiovox CF adaptor.
