Wow, this thing is tiny and look at the specs below...
What do you guys/gals think? Aside from the obviously high(er) price, is this the Zaurus we need?
Cheers,
Randall.

Evidently, this is a newer model that just hit the market. I think the original press release went out in February 2006.

Looks like the same orignal to me... and the specs look about the same... I will sit back and wait for Meanie to post... he has one of these things....

Well ok, let me give my opinion. This is a "newer model", they bundled windows tablet edition with it so you can actually use the touchscreen and the pen (stylus). This is what they should had done in the first place. In theory it beats the Zaurus in features and speed, in practice it sux. The damn thing is heavy compared to the Zaurus and it gets real hot and noisy. Keyboard is crappy compared to Zaurus. Touchscreen is dodgy as well compared to Zaurus. Performance is sluggish. It keeps going into "underclock" mode and takes a while for the CPU to go back to "normal" mode. So powersaving feature sux. The result, you get about 2-3 hours of battery life, compare that to the 7 hours you get with the Zaurus. Now they got this new double capacity battery with double the weight and size. Geez.
On the plus, it has built-in wifi and bluetooth, and more memory and hdd than Zaurus (but the Zaurus can be modded to have up to 20GB these days). The real killer is that it has video out so it can be attached to a monitor or projector easily, but it is not dual diplay, so its either display on the OQO screen or external screen, not both at the same time. And the screen on the OQO is bigger than the Zaurus and hence it is also slightly bigger than the Zaurus. Btw, I am comparing it to the C3x00 series of Zauri because I got two of those.

Thanks for the review, Meanie. I've been keeping an eye on the OQO from the very beginning and while it is a very interesting device, it just seems like it doesn't quit fill the niche it is trying to fill. It's not powerful enough to be "the only computer you'll ever need" as they said in the advertising copy, and it's lacking the battery life and ergonomics to be a truly useful portable computer. When you add in the relatively high price, it seems that it'll only appeal to a small segment of the market. If it was the same price as the Zaurus, I could forgive a lot of these faults (since being able to run Windows software is a big plus, and it has a nice selection of ports, etc) but as it is you can get 3 Zauri for the price of one OQO.

I don't think running windows is a big plus.

If your job stuck you with some proprietary piece of Windows software with no Linux equivalent, being able to run Windows would be a plus. Dual-booting better yet. You only expose yourself to the dangers of Windows when you need that one program!

I never said being able to run Windows is a big plus. Being able to run Windows software, though, is (at least for a PDA-class device). It opens you up to a huge library of software that you just isn't available for the Zaurus. Now being able to run Mac OS X, that would be a BIG plus...
